How touching. It’s especially beautiful to hear Amy saying that lovely secondary Ipo Lei Manu melody that I remember from the late Palani Vaughan. Miss both him and the late Reverend David so much, May they rest in peace.
Only 80 views on two prolific and highly respected musicians in the Islands! Absolutely wonderful reading of this sad and beautiful mele.Mahalo nui Dennis for the intro. How fortunate for you Darin to be right there and capture this for all of us to enjoy.Mahalo nui brah.
Is it not crazy the amount of insanely good music that goes unnoticed by the majority of people. I would listen to these artists on loop before hearing another new pop song
Amy’s voice is so beautifully haunting. I can imagine Queen Kapi’olani singing this to King Kalākaua. Such a beautiful rendition by one of our most talented sopranos. Maikaʻi kēlā!
I worked for a few months at the AF Sheraton Palace Hotel. One of the employees took me to see King Kalakaua's chair. It was in a hallway on an upper floor. It had a brass plate identifying it. The employee said that the story among the employees was that the King was poisoned. I have no way of knowing if this was true. Many years later I tried to take my husband to see the chair, but no one knew where it was or even that it existed. I hope it got back to Iolani Palace. Oakland Ca 2023
Heart-breakingly beautiful lyrics, Heart-breakingly beautiful musicianship. Mahalo piha Kapi'olani Ali'i, Amy Hanaiali'i, a me Dennis Kamakahi, a me Jeff Peterson Aloooha
I'm a slack key/ traditional music rookie, is never heard another version then Gabby's. A studio version mind you. This is amazing and brings goosebumps. Mana. Mahalo, Aloha, my wife and I are Haole but she live at Anini Beach from when she was 0 to 5 in the 70's. We've always loved this music. My children love gabby
This is very special. Uncle Dennis will be forever missed. Another wonderful version is that of Palani Vaughn. The part Amy is singing was not in the original written by Queen Kapiolani. It was by Palani Vaughn and composed many decades later.
Did you get that it was written by Queen Ka'ahamanu for the King. Meant for him to welcome him home from his trip to San Francisco, but he died in SF, so never got to hear it. I believe that the part Amy sings was added by Palani Vaughn & wasn't part of the original. That's because it was a chant when it was originally composed. So gorgeous.
Mahalo, Darin. This mele always gets me teary-eyed. It is such a beautiful love song yet so poignant because of the circumstances. Chicken skin. Me ke aloha, Auntie Wanda

If memory of Hawaiian history studies are correct, Kalakaua got ill while sailing to SFO, 12/1890. He attended one ceremony & died soon after, 1/1891
