  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Larry Carlton, Multi-Grammy Award Winning Guitarist
    About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest, Larry Carlton, is a legendary, 4-time Grammy award winning guitarist whose brilliant musicianship can be heard on thousands of recordings, and on over 100 gold records recorded by the greatest stars of all time, including Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis Jr., Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Olivia Newton-John, Dolly Parton, and dozens more.
His list of milestones in a career spanning over 50 years is staggering. For over 3 decades, before transitioning completely to a solo artist, he was one of the most sought-after studio musicians in the recording industry, because he’s equally adept on the electric and acoustic guitar, in every musical genre including pop, jazz, rock, R&B, blues, soul and country. He’s renowned for his unmistakable and often-imitated "sweet" sound, created on his famous Gibson ES-335 electric guitar.
He created his trademark volume pedal technique, prominently featured in his recordings with Joni Mitchell, and with the legendary jazz/rock group “The Crusaders”, with whom he toured until 1976, and performed on 13 of their albums. He was a member of the iconic jazz band, “Four Play”, and recorded 8 albums with them. His performance on the "Theme from Hill Street Blues" won him a Grammy award. And he co-wrote the theme for the hit TV sitcom “Who’s the Boss”, and the movie soundtrack for “Against All Odds”.
His guitar work on Steely Dan's classic song, "Kid Charlemagne", was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the greatest guitar licks of all time. His solo career has been hugely successful, with over 30 albums and 14 video concerts produced so far. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences voted him their most valuable player for 3 consecutive years, and then he was given their highest honour; he was named “player emeritus”.

I know, I know, I use the word “legend” a lot on our show. But just listen to the introduction in this interview, and then tell me honestly….if Larry Carlton isn’t a legendary musician, who is? It was a huge honor and privilege having him on our show. He’s made a monumental contribution to the music industry!

Thanks a lot for this great interview. There are no words to express how Larry Carlton changed my life since I listened to Room 335 for the first time way back in the 80s. I saw and heard him play live quite some times when he came to Germany, and I got various opportunities to talk to him. I‘d like to share how it went the last time I met him. He played a great concert with the SWR Big Band in Rottweil, Germany. Before the show there wasn‘t plenty of time to talk, but he promised me to sign my guitar - „his“ signature ES 335 - after the show. And so he did.
Then we talked about the guitar he was playing during the show, a brownish ES335 with a trapeze tailpiece, which I never saw him play before. He told me that the airline could not make it to provide the guitar on arrival at the airport, so he had to lend this other 335 (It took about four weeks until the guitar eventually arrived at his home in Nashville). I told him that if I would have known this prior to the show then of course I would have handed over my guitar to him, which might have been a better option, but it was too late obviously. Anyway, Larry was quite astonished that I really would have been willing to hand over my guitar to him for the show, he almost couldn‘t believe it. Maybe this little story shows what a humble and wonderful person Larry is.
Larry, congrats to your mother, all the best! Can‘t wait to see you performing in Germany again.

Wonderful interview Harvey. I have followed Larry for many decades and was thrilled to see him play with The Crusaders in London. As well as being a fantastic guitarist he is also a lovely guy.

Larry is my favorite guitarist. He has written so many great songs, in my opinion he is the Beatles of Blues/Fusion/Jazz/rock. I've been a guitar player since 1959.

Harvey: the intro was longer than some of the Factums you have read. For awhile, I almost expected you to say, well Larry, I have run out of time, before he could answer your first question.

Those intros, which have become a hallmark of our show, serve 2 very important purposes. They give the viewers the info they need about the guest to decide if they want to watch the interview. And much more importantly, the intro lets the guest know that, unlike most other interviewers, I’ve done my homework, and they’re in the hands of a pro. Those intros give the guest the confidence to relax and open up. They set the stage for a great conversation. Yes, my intros may be longer than some factums, and quite frankly, they’re certainly better researched and more well written than most factums I ever read. So, my friend, those factums (which by the way do not in any way shorten the remaining time available for my questions) are HERE TO STAY.
