- Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Dean Butler, Actor, Producer, Director, “Almanzo Wilder” from “Little House on the Prairie”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Dean Butler, is a beloved actor, producer and director who has been immortalized for his unforgettable portrayal of “Almanzo Wilder”, the innocent and pure-hearted young man who won “Laura’s” heart and married her, on one of the most cherished and treasured television series ever made, “Little House on the Prairie”, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its debut in 1974.
Our guest also appeared in the 3 “Little House” movies, “Look Back to Yesterday”, “The Last Farewell”, and “Bless All the Dear Children”. He also wrote, produced and directed the 2008 video, “Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura”. And he produced and directed the 2015 video, “Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder”.
And in 2012 he co-produced the hugely popular PBS Music Special, “Pa’s Fiddle: The Music of America”. And yes, he and his co-star Melissa Gilbert have the singular distinction of having won the 2006 TV Land Award for the Most Memorable Onscreen Kiss, which warmed everyone’s hearts, and still resonates in all of our memories. But our guest has had a highly successful career that has gone well beyond his work on “Little House”.
He co-starred in the TV movie “Forever”, and the ground-breaking 1985 LGBTQ feature film, “Desert Hearts”. And he’s also remembered for his portrayal of “Moondoggie”, Gidget’s husband, in the TV movie “Gidget’s Summer Reunion”, which generated the TV series “The New Gidget”. And he had a recurring role as Buffy’s father “Hank Summers” in the hit TV show, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.
Our guest has also had a distinguished stage career, having appeared on Broadway in “Into the Woods”, which ran for 11 months, and he starred in “West Side Story” in a highly acclaimed tour of Japan.
And if all of that weren’t enough, he’s had a highly successful career as the producer of the immensely popular interview program, “FAIR-ER-TY”, which ran for 10 seasons on the NBC Golf Channel.
And now our guest is releasing his brand new memoir entitled “Prairie Man: My Little House Life and Beyond”. This is an illuminating, intimate and poignant book in which our guest shares his personal journey of family, relationships, a diverse career, and the remarkable experience of being part of a legendary show which is so deeply entrenched in American pop culture.

Wonderful interview. One thing to think about in discussing Landon’s flaws was that he was only in his 30s and 40s during Little House. Not making excuses for bad behavior. But in the grand scheme of life that’s young. And he died at just 54 years of age. As people get older, 60, 70, 80, I think most all of us have some regrets about things we’ve said or did or didn’t say. And we grow and become better people. Michael’s life was short. I agree with Dean, that he would have evolved, not just because of external factors, but internal as well. Still he gave us so much goodness through his work. I grew up in the 70s and watched LH every week Dean was wonderful in his portrayal of Almanzo.
I really appreciate your perspective and agree with you about everything you’ve said. Thank you so much for watching, and for your support of our show
What a great interview. So refreshing to watch something uplifting🙂
I really appreciate that comment. Thank you so much
I just discovered this channel and love it!!😊😊😊
I'm a gay man of a similar age bracket...so, all of your guests have been people I grew up with and loved watching as a kid 😊
Harvey truly is living the dream of every 70s Gay Boy getting to meet all these idols!!❤
You should interview Marlo Thomas too. She truly was "That Girl" of that time!😊
I’m so glad you found our show! Now hurry and watch all our great interviews!!! We’ve invited Marlo Thomas many times to appear on the show but so far no luck. Maybe one day she’ll say yes and get the best interview of her life. And yes, I am definitely living every gay boy baby boomer’s dream!!!
I came here as a Dean Butler fan. I left here still a Dean Butler fan, but now also a Harvey Brownstone fan as well. Dean was right, what an amazing introduction. And what a great interview. I subscribed!
Thank you so very much for subscribing!!! I am immensely grateful. Can’t wait to read your comments about our other interviews with great stars!
Thank you Dean Butler for once again speaking the truth about Michael Landon. After K Grassle's book came out some people were saying some ugly things about ML . Many people just didn't believe her. My response was almost identical to Dean Butler's. I felt that IF he did all the things she said it was because it was acceptable behavior back then. I lived through that time when men had carte blanche to say whatever they wanted, make whatever jokes they wanted. And YES - Dean Butler - we HAVE evolved as you said and I have said and I am SURE that Michael Landon would have evolved. And even though I didn't know him - except through his work and the comments of his friends and family and co-workers - I feel certain that he would be embarrassed today if he were here - by that behavior. Yes - he was a man of his times but he was also a very good and decent man who left behind an amazing body of work. And a beautiful family who still treasure his memory. And that's what he should be judged by.
Beautifully said. Thank you.
This is turning into Harvey Brownstone night. My third one now. Thank you again, Harvey! Another great interview. And a little archly, and with reference to another interview relating to LHOTP, at least this guy hasn't claimed misogyny over Michael Landon's mood swing! And THIS performer at least has couched that dreadful first memory with recollections of how much enthusiasm and warmth Landon could also be capable of. Regarding the on-set jokes that might be a little salty, so long as nothing was said in front of the children, the world of theatre has taught me that women can turn the air blue as fast as any man can. We have to have a spine. Sometimes, I have inwardly rolled my eyes in a dressing room and thought, "No wonder Victorians put this profession on a par with street-walking'. Dean has nobly acknowledged Landon's achievements, and shown gratitude for that whole era of all their lives. They made television history! Tremendous guest - the sort of man I would love to have as a neighbour.
WOW I love that you’ve been binge watching our show!! Thank you so much for being such a loyal viewer. I love reading your comments. I agree with everything you’ve said about Dean Butler. He’s a lovely guy.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 And so are you. And when you revealed your age, my jaw dropped. The universe seems to give young faces to lovely people. You are blessed in so many ways - and you really are a delight on here.
@eddiehanson2738 Eddie you have made my day. Your kindness to me means more than I could ever express. THANK YOU SO MUCH
Dean is still goodlooking; beautuful head of hair! And Harvey I like your new youthful attire.

Dean is always a great interview! I totally click with this man. I can see that we would be good friends in real life. I understand everything he talks about and agree with much of it.
I’m sure he would be very fortunate to have you as a friend. I know I would
Another winner - and what a lovely lovely man! I really liked him in Buffy, too.
Yes he is an absolute sweetheart. I enjoyed our time together very much.
Great interview. It's rare to see an interviewer let their guest talk the way Dean was allowed to. It let him express everything he wanted to say well. Thanks for that.
Thank you for really “getting” and appreciating what I do.
Dean has me riveted thru this whole interview! Thank you Harvey ❤
That comment warms my heart so much. Thank you so much for watching!
Always good to see and hear you, Dean. What a gracious host. Uplifting and informative interview.
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind feedback
A really nice guy..Great interview..Thank you..
Thank you so much for watching
Wow what a great interview! I was totally all in being that I loved the Little House books as a child and then the TV series. I have great memories of watching that show with my dad along with Michael Landon in Bonanza in my earlier days and the Waltons. I was a young newlywed when Laura and Almanzo fell in love in the series. I went to the Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder home in Missouri years ago. Michael Landon certainly had a brilliance in his work. And Dean Butler wow, what another stand up person! Yes, you are living the dream Harvey with Robby Benson, Dean Butler, and Barry Williams. Richard Thomas of the Waltons (who portrayed Pa Ingalls in the 1999 film series Beyond the Prairie) would be the icing on the cake! Thank you for another epic interview❤
Richard Thomas has been invited to appear on our show many times. Never responds. I’m done chasing people!!
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 I don't blame you! That's my motto too. And my cutoff game is strong these days. ☺
He has avoided situations that focus on his role in the Waltons and has been leery of stereotyping-which is unfortunate for his fans.
OTOH Barry Williams has kept going and seems to enjoy his connection to Gregg Brady. Like they say different strokes for different folks. Lovely interview with Dean Butler. Great guy!
@Water_is_Sacred777 thanks for your understanding and your support of our show
@ You got it! 🙏
Thank you so much
Dean seems so nice and a wonderful actor. Great interview Harvey❤ I am a new subsriber Harvey.

Love your channel found it two weeks ago. Been binge-watching. Love each episode.
Yay!! I’m so happy you found our show!! Can’t wait to get your feedback about each episode!! Please spread the word about our show. It’s so hard building a big viewership with no advertising budget.
My favorite Little House eps were those with Laura and "Manley."
Me too!!
ML was my first tv guy crush when Bonanza first came out.
@@MalEvansUSA PR just hated Bonanza and the scripts where he was constantly under Pa's thumb.
Mine too
He certainly was not better looking in my opinion
@MalEvansUSA thanks but I already have a great partner
Hey Harvey... looking very handsome & 'Manley'!!
You are adorable!!! Thank you so much!
Hubba hubba for both guys.
WOW that’s very kind of you!!! When’s the last time you had your vision checked???😜
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 I'm not ready for braille -- yet! I'm hoping that if you saw me -- you would return the compliment.
I absolutely know that I would. Your inner beauty shines through your very kind comments
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 kiss, kiss, blush, blush.
Micheal worked on Bonanza with ALL Men for 14 years.
That’s true. Little House must have been quite an adjustment
When ML left wife # 2 for wife # 3, he was on a talk show (J Carson?) he was asked about the divorce, and he jokingly commented that if Charles had met another woman on the prairie, he would have left Caroline. I thought that was very harsh and crass. :(
That is disappointing
Ya, strange comment
Very
Thank you, Harvey, for a magnificent interview. Dean is a gentleman, is very talented and gracious.
@Leftofway you are so very welcome. Thank you so much for watching
Difficult not to like Dean Butler.
Why would anyone dislike him?
Perhaps ML's mood swings were due to his substance abuses and his sad upbringing.
Very possibly true
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 - Are you referring to the alcohol, because he was not a drug abuser. I think his mood swings were due as much to the stress he was under writing, producing, directing and acting on his shows and his "need" to keep providing work for all of his employees. That was a major concern of his, even after his diagnosis. Barney Smith who was to star as his dad on the new show, related that ML apologized to him for being unable to continue. He felt he had let him down.
