For the record, Madame Zheng was one of history’s most notorious and successful pirates. She built a vast criminal enterprise, got away with all of it and died comfortably of old age. Her story is actually incredibly fascinating and it legit feels really insulting that they made her as generic as she is in the episode.
if I'm to be brutally honest, moffat was worse about clara than chibnall was about yaz. He just had enough sense not to have any of the characters blurt it out. i mean for christ sake, no other companion in history has had the show bend over backwards to make them seem like the best thing since sliced bread, nor has any showrunner made up a character to replace every other one across history. The moment when Clara convinced the first doctor to take the damn tardis in the first place was the breaking point. You just don't fucking do shit like that. I guess moffat should thank chibnall for his lore fuckery, because that seems like a quaint thing now. But at the time? jeez.

Have you heard about any of the rumoured controversies regarding this episode? Apparently Chinese ratings boards found the original cut incredibly insensitive and absolutely hated it, which caused them to rework the majority of the episode in post to suit their complaints. It might explain all the weirdness around ji-hun.
It wasn't just that Chibnall is a terrible and shockingly lazy writer but what an awful producer he is. He chose a director who had no experience of TV work or even anything of this runtime solely because she ticked some boxes. I felt sorry for her. Because of her inexperience the thing was unfinished and it couldn't be fixed in post because there wasn't enough in the can to make anything of sense. This was never meant to be a special. It was a part of Flux but because development of it went nowhere its production was pushed back. Shit just happens in this episode because all the editor had to work with was shit.
