I'm not a particularly religious person. I'm not sure what I'd call myself. For disclosure I do believe in a higher "power" or wider purpose to things, but not in any devout or zealous way. I take on board opinions from all sides. However, Gervais style atheism really winds me up. Since the dawn on mankind, replicated in every human civilisation, there is a belief in the transcendental. 300,000 years of disparate tribes all reaching similar conclusions about the nature of the universe. Now this may be some sort of glitch in the human psyche, but for it to be dismissed as a "flying spaghetti monster" (I'm not sure if Gervais has uttered this specific trope but has a similar sentiment) because our modern methods of understanding the empirical cannot ascertain it is pure arrogance. I'm not saying he shouldn't be able to express his view however he wants, I just find that he comes across smug and self-satified. He doesn't seem interested in understanding the universe and much as making others feel he knows a bit more than them by being so conclusive. As said, I'm not making an "anti-atheism" argument, I'm making an anti-nobhead argument. It's more of a wider point I'm making about Gervais too, especially considering his more recent work. I didn't hate After Life as a show in and of itself. It hit a lot of the right notes, and as such seemed to really help a lot of people. But as a Gervais fanboy I hated it because that's all it was, him hitting the right notes. There was no risk, no interesting perspective, no nuance. It felt too cocky. It was the work of a know it all.

Of course an American remake didn't work, Gavin & Stacey plays off of cultural differences between Essex and Wales and that's just not going to travel outwith the UK in the same way. Also why does America have to remake British shows instead of just showing the original British show over there in the same way we are bombarded with the likes of Friends, HIMYM, Frasier, Cheers, Family Guy, American Dad, Two and Half Men, Seinfeld etc...

That's why gracepoint don't have season 2 lol. But songs and soundtrack from broadchurch are really fantastic it makes me wanting to watch it again,

After Life was bitterly disappointing. It did everything Derek did but worse. Recycled jokes from the XFM days, unconvincing and monotone acting from Gervais. Easily his worst show. And this is from a huge Gervais fan who wanted to love this show.

I think the same about the American Inbetweeners.

Ricky has done so much for comedy, But for me, introducing the world to Karl Pilkington is the best thing he's ever done.

I’m sure it’s awful but I’d love to watch it for hate purposes. But I can’t find it on Crackle or Amazon.

If I were to introduce Ricky to someone who’s totally unfamiliar with him or his work, I’d say watch The Office, “Animals” and “Politics”. Nothing more. Edit: 30:00 is genius haha

Really good video and great insights made ! I agree 100% with everything, I grew up on Ricky too love the same stuff you do, including all the XFM shows and even watch a lot of his interviews. Love the Golden Globes hosting etc... but Afterlife was one of the most painful experiences, I knew something was wrong in season 1, with the constant Coldplay music to manipulate you, the videos of the dead wife... season 2 was a slog and i couldn't believe he basically made the same show again in season 2 with no growth. Season 3 I could barely watch and just skipped through a lot of scenes. I didn't know what was happening with Gervais making this crap! as others have pointed out he's become a parody of what he used to mock in his earlier work. The character in Afterlife just seems like a prick and the endless use of ‘cunt' is really tiring. When he's rude to the charity workers, and the Dad in the cafe that's with his kid I thought Ricky was loosing the plot and just becoming mean. Would love you to do an expanded Pilkington video although you covered a lot here already. I think Gervais has abandoned Merchant and Pilkington, I think he’s probably a bit of a control freak and a prick in real life and has fallen out with Karl and Steve for good for various reasons. As you said I’ll watch whatever he does next but part of me just wants to watch it like a car crash. To see how self centred he gets.

Warwick Davis is a terrible actor.

I think one significant difference between the two series is the confidence with which David Tennant carries himself. He's so much more confident and at-ease in Broadchurch because he's in a familiar setting. In Gracepoint, he's completely a fish out of water.

Though the original doesn't specifically say what Stacey's dad died of, the letter he wrote to her to be opened on her wedding day shows that he knew he wasn't going to be around and so I think we can assume it probably was cancer or some kind of illness as opposed to an accident.

Armageddon was god awful. Animals his first special had me laughing the whole time and had a lot of charm and felt unique. I watched them both for the first time on the same day so i dont have any nostalgia bias or change in humor bias.

The xfm radio is imo the funniest piece of media I've come across. Ricky, Karl and Steve are amazing together like in idiot abroad too. Apart theres not anything they've done that tops when they are together.

Derek isn't really a D show, its pretty good and my brother's favourite show Ricky did (even above The Office)

Genuine question - what do Americans have against watching sitcoms in their original versions? In the UK you could write a huge list of US shows which are popular and no issues of cultural barriers to understand the humour.

I love the shade directed toward James Corden in this! 😂 I’ve often wondered how much of the likable aspects of G&S were mostly Ruth’s doing. Hard to say. In the end though, it was a brilliant show overall, and the US attempt at a remake is fucking shameful and unnecessary. I’d never heard of it before this video, and thank goodness was for that. Yikes.
