James Norrington, the most complex character in this entire series. The one who goes through the most character development and probably the most honourable man in the entire series, surrounded by a bunch of thieving, lying, deceptive, selfish and ruthless people, not the very least the woman he is in love with, and through all of that he tries to do the right thing, tries to bring criminals to justice to serve the people he joined the navy for and world chewed him up and spit him out without care or concern. Elizabeth never deserved James and she still was the cause of his demise at the end. And yet he still died as Commodore Norrington would have wanted to go, defending the innocent against forces of evil. This series a comedy so it turns things upside down, glamorises criminals and villifies actually good men bound to their duties. But if you look closely at James Norrington in the second and third movie. Look past the comedy, the grit and the nobility of his Admiral post, you'll see exactly what this world did to James Norrington and it's a sad sad fate for a man who is so good. If there was any such things as an actual hero in the Pirates of the Caribbean Universe, not a protagonist, a hero then I don't think anyone embodies the word better than Commodore, later Admiral James Norrington. yes i agree! he is a very unique sort of complex hero that isn't often so specifically portrayed in media - he definitely was the main factor for why i enjoyed those films
Killing him off was a bad idea. Excellent actor, great speaking voice, strong presence on screen and very attractive, too. His character was so interesting. Unlike most people probably, I was far less interested in what happened to Will. It made no sense to me that Elizabeth had Captain Jack and Norrington keen on her …wow…but she was devoted to Will. 🤔
I love how James' fighting style changes from the first film to the second, after he loses his post his fighting style becomes more pirate like. Less honourable but still with a high level of skill.
It's quite amazing how when he was a child, a pirate (Captain Teague) saved his life when he fell off the sea. Now he died saving the pirates (Captain Swann and her crew).

The main character of Pirates was the pirate Jack Sparrow, so it is clear that Englishmen and other pirates hunters are antagonists
He was a good character, there was a lot of potential on him. A pity he was a little underrated by the writers, there was so much more that they could have done with him. At least he had a decent ending (although I thought it could have be better, but it still was a satisfying character closure)

Maybe you could stick him with a mutiny charge for turning on Jack at the end of Dead Man's Chest, but that's a stretch.
It definitely does feel like something is missing when he said that, but I do have a theory. Given that through the deleted scenes of Becket we know he wasn’t above such things like Human trafficking, and given how in the intro of Worlds End we see citizens of dubious connections to piracy being hanged, even children, for someone as righteous as Norrington I’m sure he didn’t approve of either of these things, that a man like him could turn the other way while Becket is about to do these things. Just a thought, but if I were in his shoes and saw this stuff while being on the side of the “law”, even I’d feel guilty even if I didn’t swing the noose.
