James deserved so much better. His character grew so much in this first film as we as the other two and they (James, Will and Jack) could have been a fine trio. Instead they turned him into a self serving traitor and killed him off.
Talking about not going for the cliche of spare-good-guy-becomes-bad-guy-becomes-martyr/heroic-sacrifice-guy plot. Killing characters off to close their arc is so lazy and overdone.
@@iprobablyforgotsomething he was a good character who could’ve done more and deserved more... he had the makings of a good storyline of his own, but for not... Commodore James Norrington was robbed of his happy ending. 🙁
I see what you mean. He easily could've taken the place of Elizabeth's Father as the Governor of Port Royal or even as the commander of East India Trading company and raising it into being a more Honorable company with more honorable goals such as Elimanating Slave traders
I wish they had done more with James' character. I found him a lot more interesting than many of the other characters the movies focused on, and I wish we could've seen him grow more, interact with Jack Sparrow and the rest of the main cast more, possibly get a happy ending. Disney wasted his potential
If we take Orlando Bloom as a box office bait out of the equation, a much better and plausible storyline would be a romance between Elizabeth and Norrington, they are better written characters, they have a much more natural common ground (coming from the same social circles, while it is not exactly clear how Will and Elizabeth could develop a friendship him being an apprentice in a smithy and she being a Governor's daughter, it is not unheard of in the world of fictional romance, but here it feels like a huge gap) and would bounce off of each other and compliment each other's characters much better, also they could bring in much more humor then there already is, and, frankly, both are much better actors.

Props and Respect for James Norrington. The girl of his dreams rejects him for a guy he looked down on, and he takes the L gracefully like the CHAD he is. For what it's worth, he was just as much worthy of Elizabeth as Will was.
I just realized In At World's End If James Norrington accepted the Dutchmans offer and be part of his crew he would have still be alive and be part of Will crew.

His character seem to be casted as a heartless protagonist to Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, but he really was a man who was straight as an arrow in doing his duty, showing in being stern and authoritative, ridding of outcasts and defending the just. But he did have weak spot in his tough exterior, and that was his long oppressed love for Elizabeth... if it wasn’t about Jack, this story/movie would’ve been about James and Elizabeth... in a perfect world, it would’ve ended with them, but not. Commodore James Norrington was robbed of his happiness in POTC. 😕
Honestly yeah, before watching the movie, I expect Norrington to be like a Gaston type (traditionally masculine but also really douchey and shallow) but more on the administrative type. The movie actually makes him a good character, the problem is that the protagonists are pirates
I did too and I married a man just like him. I came to realize that when I rewatched POTC and the interview with Jack Davenport explaining his character. I told my husband and he had to agree. Including the “ having his authority undermined “ as Jack davenport describes it. He had a burn out a few years ago..because he was so devoted to the company ( norrington sailing through a storm😣comes to mind)worked crazy hours…9 am till 4am…for weeks on end. (He’s a financial director) So..my “ norrington” didn’t die and we have 6 kids 😉….another crazy fact.. I had two best friends when we watched pirates as teenagers. One liked Jack and married…well not actually married..a guy like him, the other liked Will and married a guy like him…….and….we are no longer friends 😅😅 Grew apart I guess.. different lives.
What sucks about norrington is ever since he left Elizabeth for will his life toke a downturn. He was a very true soldier that did what was best for his men and for the people at port royale it just sucks they had him killed in worlds end.
His life hit the gutter (literally) when he let Jack go and since then was obsessed with chasing Jack, even at the cost of his entire crew and career. He is fairly handsome and successful, I am pretty sure he would have found an alternative (he wasn't even that interested in her in the 2nd movie)
James - "He may/will/shall follow/heed/seize by the heel/watch/guard/protect”, "May God protect" Commodore - a naval rank above captain and below rear admiral, generally given temporarily to an officer commanding a squadron or division of a fleet. Upstanding - sacrifice(serving others) - considerate(to not inconvenience).
I was always confused by how old Norrington was supposed to be, especially given how he’s clearly older than both Will and Elizabeth. Yet he showed romantic/sexual interest in Elizabeth as she developed into becoming a young woman
As far as I understand, James is 8 years older than Elizabeth. In the movie they didn't replace the actor so as not to confuse the audience but in the flash Jack the character should be around 20 years old while Elizabeth is 12.
Despite it being normal at the time, it's creepy how Norrington was fine having a relationship for who was once basically a child to him like Elizabeth.
The way men saw it back then, she was with him and him only therefore perfect to mother his children. Her youth wasn't so much the prize so much as her being "untried" and beautiful.
There's hardly an age gap between them; 10 years at most and even today, such relationships are pretty common. As for knowing her since she was a child, it's unlikely he was around her a lot when she was growing up. Being part of the Navy meant he could be gone for weeks, months or even years at a time if he was making trips between Port Royal and England.
I realised something incredibly wrong, how old was the character James? He proposed to Elizabeth but in one scene about 20 seconds in he seems like an adult and Elizabeth is a small child...
Well it was normal for the times to marry someone much older or younger than you... Most of girls were already married in their 15 - 16, Elizabeth was even older when she got the proposal (she should be eighteen yo in this movie)🤷🏻♀️
Apparently Elizabeth was 19 and James 28 in the first film. If she was like 10 or something in the beginning flashback, James would have been 19. This is made slightly confusing by the fact that James’ actor did not change - whilst Elizabeth’s does. Also, James did not attempt to propose to her until she was 19 :)
