  • What Are Strawberry Runners And What Should We Do With Them? Most Strawberry mother plants send out several runners (stolons) every spring/summer. These runners are akin to a tomato sucker and are a vegetative offshoot of the main plant that's trying to become a plant on its own. This is great and all, and a fantastic way to expand your Strawberry patch for free....however, they take energy away from the main plant.
    In this video we explain exactly what Strawberry runners are and what to look for. As well, I show you how I extract the runners to make new plants and the strategies behind Strawberry runner management.

    I bought a nearly dead discounted strawberry plant from krogers right before summer began for $4. And now I've had to upgrade the size of its pot and it has like 5 runners and those runners have runners. It's amazing how resilient these little guys are. This is my first strawberry plant so I plan to repot the runners and share with my neighbor. Thank you for your videos. I have a hard time cutting plants so having this information really helps with that.

    We have several hundred strawberry seedlings in the window now, and in previous years we've had tens of thousands of runners at one time in the patch. While it does make sense to remove runners when you have thousands of plants, the logistics of actually doing so is insane! However with tomatoes, the first side shoots just make the plant bigger so the later season is a lot more productive with them than without them. towards the end of the season, one should remove new flowers that don't have time to finish becoming tomatoes before the frost. Each of us makes it work the way it works for us.

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  4 года назад +1

      It always feels so weird to remove those flowers in the late summer....every year.....have to do it...still feels counterproductive! Cheers! 🍅🍅🍅
