- Growing The Best Strawberries Requires Strategy! In this video I show you how to take your spent Strawberry patch or bed or container and revamp it for maximum harvest next year.
Strawberry plants actually grow and multiply on their own, outcompeting themselves and thus outgrowing their surroundings. They must be divided and replanted every 3-5 years to keep producing their summer fruit at a high level.
This is a 2-part series with this video focusing on the division and individual planting of the Strawberry crowns, with part 2 focusing on placing the established new plants in their permanent location before the fall frosts hit.

Ha ha! Totally. :-)
I’m trying with strawberry runners in grow tent. Keep your fingers crossed! 🤞
Indoors? So awesome man!!
That’s great! In my experience , strawberries are not too difficult to grow and once established, they send runners out like crazy. I’m hoping you soon have a bounty of fresh harvested strawberries! 🍓 Good luck 👍🏼
@@FarmLifewithKids 100% correct. That's what makes them so great!
Very informative, great video!
Thanks, cheers!
Thank you for that. Here in Oz we are coming towards spring in a few weeks. I can hardly wait to get some strawbs going! 👍❤️️👏😘
So awesome.. I love how you guys are getting ready for spring just as we're dreading fall! :)
Thanks for great info. I have no luck with strawberries 🍓 unfortunately for some reason but I am not giving up
Definitely don't give up...you CAN conquer them!!
Gorgeous plants. Thank you :)
This is my first year growing strawberries and blueberries. Thank you for all your videos. But I still have 2 questions and wanted to see if you knew......
1. What is the best way to keep away insects from getting into the soil & on the plant itself (but wont harm the bees)?
2. What is the best way to keep birds away, but again, still giving access to bees? The birds tore up Every Single Peach that my neighbor had, so i know they will probably mess with my fruit.
Love your videos, very informative.
Thanks so much Mark, that means I lot! Happy growing!
Yeah dude! Great vid!
Thanks buddy!

Oh wow
Awesome 👍👍❤️😍😘
Thanks Ellen...cheers!
I've got my runners potted and they're actually surviving. I'm starting to make the raised bed and will be planting them in September.
Right on, good stuff! :-)
wow this is better than my strawberries my strawberry runners died inside only one survived because it was in water the other was in poting soil
Yeah, you can have the runners in water, but as soon as they get the white roots, you have to pot them up! Cheers
I’m sorry to hear that. Don’t give up and keep trying. 👍🏼😊 Good luck 🍀
r u using metal pots or do they just look like it? the green, orange, and purple ones. they're very pretty. im scared of metal and plastic. ive seen lots of diff plastic containers and lots of diff colours being used in vdo's on YT and i just dk what to think, and yes i agree that at some point all food is grown in plastic. is it ok to use coloured glasses to start plants in h2o? ive been using clear glass only. i planted some celery and 2 sweet taters. ty for the links and for calling on your fellow gardeners to step up and help us newbies learn to be more self sufficient. i appreciate that you are helping humanity progress forward. what is better than that in this life dear human? nada. there is nothing greater than love. i just saw those fabric grow bags but didn't know their name! i am old, live alone w my animals and cant build beds. oh hey guess what?! i did what u suggested and made a list of the food i want to grow and I found out which USDA Hardiness Zone im in. what's next? dividing my list into seasons? any deets? links? i have so many questions lol. im sorry i dont do FB. ty
Yeah, they are metal. They don't seem to be painted...its more of a plastic polymer that is shrunk around it like a coating. Grow bags are AWESOME! I think they would be just ideal in your situation! 5 gallon and 7 gallon are the best sizes for veggie gardening!
Sorry if I missed it but when did u actually divide the crowns? Wondering if too late here in nw Oregon, thinking we don’t see frost until late nov... the part two video I saw was obviously older since the crowns in your video were coming out of water...thx
If you can pull the divided plants indoors, you can bust of the mother crowns ANY time of the year. If going back outside, it should be done 8 weeks before the first fall frost date. So in Oregon (just south of me), you're still good to go!
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi. Aaah, When is a good time to dig the mother plant up? At the end of a harvest in spring? What about Everbearing strawberries? When would you dig them up ? ( time of year ) Good video ! I enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next video. Peace to you and yours
Hey Kiki, several options. If you can grow indoors, you can dig the mother plant up in the fall and then divide and grow the plants right through winter and plant out in the spring. You can also dig the mother plant out in the winter, divide it up and get those plants going early...like I did in this 3-part series: ruclips.net/video/-pkXdVStYes/видео.html I did that one in February of this year and divided it HEAVILY......the new crowns gave me tons of fruit just 4 months later!! So I literally didn't miss a season.
Can we do the same for blueberries?
Blueberry plants are woody shrubs....they don't really get divided like this. And they are great to be left alone for 10+ years in one spot. Not at all the same.
🦄
Hey Jeff, Love your channel. I have a quick question for you; My strawberry plants did great this summer but the ants kept eating them just before they could be harvested. Is there any organic way to kill the ants without harming the plants or myself? Thanks and keep the vidios coming. Chuck
Hey Chuck, thanks man! For ants that are actually attacking or eating your plants, the best way I've found is either Diatomaceous Earth or Talc Powder... Make a barrier around where the ants are accessing them and they'll stay away. After that, ants don't travel massively fast... Find the best and douse it out redirect them elsewhere!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks Jeff, Next spring I`ll give it a try.
I am about to take a second chance on growing strawberries. My last effort lasted about 1 week before everything on the surface died. I let it sit and a few days later some new green shoots surfaced so I let them grow and cut back on the water thinking I drowned them. Then they died too. When you water from below, do you remove them from the water once it has wicked up to the surface and then shuffle them back and forth?
Yeah man, 100%...once the soil is soaked, that's it, no more watering. Likely for a month depending on how good your soil is at retaining moisture
"If you're feeling frisky" -- HA!
Question, Is there any other considerations in growing Strawberries when you are using the Everbearing Variety?
Nope. Its all I grow now. I think I only have one June-bearing plant left. Just clip the runners off as they appear and make sure the plants are well-watered during fruiting. :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms And fertilized!
@@imaspacewoman yup, still just feed twice a year
It's mid summer
You know what that means
Part 3 of the great onion slice reality vlog
I keep my strawberries in a large bucket, can I put a few crowns together into the bucket? Or should only split into multiple starting pots?
Oh yeah, definitely! Space the crowns 4 inches apart on all sides... Put in as many as will fit!
The Ripe Tomato Farms awesome thank you! My second year doing strawberries and I got a slightly larger yield this year but I did nothing lol. Now that I know more I’ll try this! 😊
@@GabyP17 it gets better every year Gaby, trust me!!
I separated some steawberry crowns today but on most I saw that the crowns had a good root system put when I separated them what I got are broken roots and only very very small roots on one i got only 2 roots that just started growing out of the crown but before separation it had a very good root system the plants are now in big stress
@@Mech.E and on another one has actually no roots but before separation it had plenty of roots why aren't I getting roots what am I doing wrong
Separating strawberry crowns is not always the easiest task. I experienced that myself when I bought two pots of strawberries from the clearance rack at Walmart. They were very beat up and that’s why I wanted to take them, to revive them. I then realized that in each pot there was 4-5 crowns tanned packed. Needless to say they were pretty root bound. I was only able to separate one pot, the other one was way too tangled up and I broke off some roots accidentally before giving up and just plantings them all as they came on my garden bed. Now, 4 months later, they are healthy and thriving. You can see them in my August Garden Tour ruclips.net/video/10DCNzpazc0/видео.html
Anyway, all this to say strawberry plants are pretty tough and as long as you don’t plant them too deep , and keep them in nice loose moist soil, your plants will be ok. I’ll be “rooting “for you & your plants!👍🏼😊
@@FarmLifewithKids thanks I've only been growing strawberry since last year so I'm not an expert on them I still struggle with some stuff but from last year I did learn a lot about strawberries and proud of growing them I actually have some rare plants the pineberries and strasberry aka framberries omg there so tasty the pineberries taste like pineapple the framberries like raspberries I would recommend them if you can get them just put them near normal everyday strawberry plants because the pine and fram aren't self pollinated they lack the male part
Dominykas Kasinskas WOW that’s sounds delicious! I will keep my eyes 👀 open for those varieties! Thank you 🙏🏼👍🏼
Yeah, they don't often have huge root systems attached. Pull them apart firmly, but gently. You can also place them in water to ensure that they are going to grow and wait until more roots are set out. This is another video that shows that: ruclips.net/video/-pkXdVStYes/видео.html
What do you do with your strawberry plants that are in containers over the winter?
Let me give you a tip for getting more subscribers
Upload more videos regularly
Daily if possible
If you don't have a time then upload videos every 5-7 days
But it looks like you've already figured that out
Definitely. If I had the time, I would upload twice a day. I have 1200 video ideas.....and time for a fraction of them... :(
Get out of there going to explode
