How GCI will rival RMC | Coaster Theory

  • Ever since 1996, Great Coasters International has been the go-to wood coaster manufacturer. GCI has built 29 coasters over their lifetime, and only a shocking three of them have been removed. Considering we're talking about wood coasters, I have to give props to GCI for creating a formula so these woodies can last for years at a time. Before 1996, wood coasters were limited to only several manufacturers, the big one being Custom Coasters International or CCI for short. The coasters CCI built were great for their time, but once GCI stepped one scene building Wildcat, the wood coaster market wouldn't be the same. CCI didn't innovate, they used the same style track and the same PTC trains while in business, but lucky for us GCI is the complete opposite. Since their opening, they would bring a whole new variety of coasters to life… for instance, the dueling woodie, most notably Gwazi. When Gwazi opened summer 1999, it brought a new thrill to Florida and proved GCI was the next up and coming CCI. Now, unfortunately, Gwazi is one of those three coasters to bite the dust, and even though it's no longer with us, it's still looked back upon as one of GCIs biggest milestones. The company has also improved upon the traditional style coaster, by bringing it to new heights, and toning it down for the families, but over the past twenty-four years of business, they have not even dipped their toe into the steel coaster market. Going back to the innovation, recently, we have seen GCI take a steel support structure route over the classic wood structure, and this is for two main reasons. Wear and Tear, and ease of construction. With the company becoming familiar with the steel support structures, and not too long ago debuting there new steel track, could we see this steel track on a steel structure as GCIs first fully steel coaster? Well, today, we take a closer look at what GCI is hiding up their sleeves and how it could get them on par with Top Tier manufacturers like Intamin and even RMC. Back in 2011, the coaster industry would be changed as RMC debuted its hybrid coasters. After only nine years since their first coaster, RMC has gone international building 21 coasters in three continents, after becoming so popular in such a short period of time, it would be long until other companies catch on. B&M started to make these smaller lifter airtime hills on their recent hypers and Giga notably Shambala, Mako, Candymonium, and Orion. Another manufacturer drawing inspiration from RMC is Intamin. Lately, on Intamins, we've seen a lot more zero-g rolls, stalls, and ejector hills. I'm not saying Intamin hasn't made these elements before, but now we're getting a lot more of them. But I'm not complaining, Pantheon looks incredible. Now what about GCI? As of now, GCI is not doing anything crazy as far as using RMC elements, but over the next couple of years their coaster will look completely different. I'm talking about the new model that can reach 200ft, the new trains, and the new track. We have a lot to uncover all of these new products.

    Woah! Who's this new channel? 😉
    This GCI steel track is intriguing. Thrill Central actually just released a video earlier today too talking about Wildcat at Hersheypark potentially being the first coaster to use this track, you should check it out!
    It seems like this track could open up so many new possibilities for GCI! I don't see any reason traditional wood GCI track couldn't be mixed with this new steel track.

    • @spentron1
      @spentron1 4 года назад +1

      I think the whole purpose of the steel track is to mix it with wood. As explained in this video, but I already thought this. I don't think they're trying to copy RMC, just be inspired by them and compete.
      I've yet to see an answer to what the black stuff on that track is, looks like rubber which would allow using steel wheels and have less friction on regular wood track. If it were all steel it would lose momentum even faster than RMCs or El Toro with their rubberized wheels.

    • @howenator
      @howenator 4 года назад +1

      @@spentron1 that makes sense. They already do somewhat compete against RMC in number of yearly installations but it seems like this is to diversify the models so they can satisfy that more intense coaster market even though their coasters already pretty intense, if they can maintain the low friction and put more positive gs into the layout there's no doubt they'll be my favorite manufacturer

    Looking from an economic perspective, RMC and GCI are both vertically integrated (pretty sure about GCI, but definitely RMC). Vertically integrated means that they design and construct all aspects of their rides in house. Other manufacturers like Intamin and B&M contract separate companies to make their track, their trains, and construct their coasters; the most famous example of this being how RMC actually constructed El Toro and T-Express, even though Intamin designed them. Furthermore, RMC hasn't contracted any 3rd party companies other than for the launch on Lrod and the two coasters that use the Gerstluar trains, and GCI only has one coaster, Boss, that uses PTC trains.This is the main reason that RMC and GCI coasters are all selling at incredibly competitive prices. The overall point that I'm making is RMC and GCI will do a much better job at rivaling other top companies than rivaling themselves, through pioneering not just new, more intense types of coasters, but also having a much better and more competitive business model. I think over time they will find their respective places in the coaster market, RMC will go in the direction of steel coasters, single rail track, and hyper hybrids, while finishing up any remaining possible retrofits of wooden coasters (which I don't believe there are much left anyways). GCI will make ground up, smaller wooden coasters like they already have, just a better version of their product with inversions and better elements. I don't see there being much conflict if the two companies go in these directions because RMC's wooden topper tracks have all been some of their worst coasters, from an investment standpoint of course (Only exception being Wildfire probably)

    • @timk987
      @timk987 4 года назад +1

      RMC has partnered with Martin & Vleminckx for sales and construction in Asia. That's not to say that they don't send anybody to oversee the construction of their rides in Asia, but they do not send their entire team to erect the coaster. I am also not completely sold on the fact that the engineering is done in house. Alan Shilke and Ned Hansen are founding partners of Ride Centerline, which is an active engineering firm that also works with S&S and Chance Rides. There may be some exclusionary contracts signed or perhaps Fred Grub has them on his books as employees. However, it seems to make the most sense that RMC would simply take their ideas to Ride Centerline the same way so many companies rely on Ingenieurbüro Stengel GmbH for their engineering. All that being said, I agree with your points about minimizing their cost by being primarily in-house.

    When it comes to the point at 5:30 about refurbishment, RMC did the same thing on a wooden coaster at Silverwood Theme Park in Idaho with either the Timber Terror coaster or the Tremors coaster. They replaced a section on a turnaround with the i-box track to reduce maintenance. If you watch the POV and listen for it, you can hear an audible change and even notice the banking is more heartlined, like a steel coaster.

    I think GCI needs to do this on Wild Cat at Hershey Park. They should update it and a cool idea I had is that they could use the structure of a banked turn and make it into a wave turn to rival what RMC does because it would add in insane ejector airtime. They also could retrack the rest of the banked turns and change the trains to Infinity Flyers and then the coaster would be insane. Then in a decade or so when Lightning Racer gets too rough, Hershey should RMC it and make it into a Mobius Loop like Twisted Colossus. Then Hershey would be one of the best parks in the world in my opinion

    I honestly think the market for woodies is different enough for the market for hybrids to only really have GCI rival the occasional ground-up woodie from RMC

    I've been doing some personal research on infinity flyers and the Hybrid Track and I have a few things to add. The reasons they added and insane lateral and vertical turning radius is compactness. Showcased in the event were pamphlets which showed the new turning radius for the infinity flyers - with how tight they are, you could not implement a turn that tight into a layout. These were made for compactness - making switchback look like it has the compactness of the beast. I directly quote 'we can have a 180' turn out of the station, and have another 180' turn and have the drop dive in between the station and the lift hill'. I'd highly recommend watching a few POV's of what the new GCI's can do:

    I would just like to hear about ways that Six Flags Magic Mountain Viper could be redone in such a way that the layout would be the same but much smoother transitions and lap bar restraints, to make people want to ride the old, head banging monstrosity. I would really love to hear you opinion on the subject👍

    I could see GCI retrofitting Wildcat; everyone wants to give it the RMC treatment but given that it’s GCI’s first coaster and not in the greatest of shape they may have their own plan to revitalize their first coaster

    I really think GCI has a big potential as well as Gravity Group.Imagine a Steel Vengeance styled woodie with strong laterals,ejector and inversions.Besides,they are really cheap compared to the high quality they deliever,I am not sure of prices but I am pretty sure even Six Flags can afford a large scale woodie(the come around 8-12m dollars in my guess)they could also go with GG.Either way,RMC may look more now to the Raptor and T-Rex I think since in the woodies department there is no way the Topper Track can rival GCI or GG.I would love to see a new golden era for the woodies,have RMC,GCI and Intamin compete.Add launches,inversions,and 200ft heights to woodies.Everything is possible

    Oh wow... So if I understand this correctly, RMC has been using hybrid engineering to allow wooden roller coasters to be everything that steel coasters have been for years. Whereas GCI is going to use hybrid engineering to evolve the classic wooden roller coaster experience forget than what ever had been for years. Basically making roller coasters that everyone wished Son Of Beast could have been. That's a brilliant way of competing without entirely copying another company.
