  • This is a continuation in a series of getting an AeroSky Quadcopter running with the KK 2.0 board. The first video walked through the KK2.0 firmware upgrade:
    • How to Upgrade Hobby K...
    This video demonstrates how to get your quad in the air without any tuning and flying in auto-level mode. I walk you through ESC calibration, motor layout, accelerometer calibration, and using the default settings. As you can tell from the vid the quad flies pretty well, but there is still some tuning that needs to be done.
    In the next vid I will walk through tuning the KK2.0 and getting everything dialed in so that even a novice can fly the quad.

    No, I haven't. Is it sluggish or non-responsive? If it's sluggish then consider turning up your gains. If it doesn't respond at all then I'm uncertain what to recommend. Does it fly okay in acro mode?

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Are you flying with a 3S or 4S lipo? Also, make sure you've done the ESC calibration routine which will set your low and high endpoints. If they're not calibrated you may not be getting the full range of throttle. Are you able to get your quad off the ground and hover?

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    What gives an error? Your DEVO7 or KK2? I've done this with the Walkera WK-2801Pro so I would expect that you'd be able to do this with the DEVO7.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Sorry to hear that. Make sure that you have proper vibration damping as I've heard that some of these boards do crazy things when there are too many vibes. Were you hovering okay and all of a sudden it flipped over?

    No problem, Frank. I'm currently doing a KK2 build right now and am having all sorts of problems. I just posted a vid about it. I think the board is defective. Anyway, I'm glad this helped and thanks for watching.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Have you messed with your autolevel gains at all? What happens when you do an acc calibration? Perhaps you've accidentally tweaked a configuration or a sensor has gone bad. Worse case I would reload the firmware and see what happens from there.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Good to know that your motors and ESCs are working properly and it sounds like your throttle channels is normal and not reversed. The next thing I would try is your rudder channel to see if you can arm your KK by pushing your throttle stick to the left.

  • @dennisbaldwin

    What do you mean by "DJI M"? Are you referring to the "DJI NAZA M"? If so, they basically do the same thing to stabilize your multirotor, but the NAZA M is a more sophisticated flight controller. It also has the ability to add GPS. At the same time the KK2 is tough to beat for the money and you can configure it without a computer since it has an LCD screen. The KK2 is obviously much cheaper too, but there is the NAZA Lite which is cheaper than the NAZA V2.

    Hey guys!!! This is really useful! If you have a KK2 board, make it so your auto-leveling on/off is set to aux1!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 лет назад

      Right. Or you can use your sticks to configure auto-level should you choose to do so. But I really like being able to toggle in-air with a switch.

    No problem. That sounds like a royal pain. Have you experimented with using a fixed ID for binding? I know the WK-2801 supports it and from what I understand binding happens much quicker, which may allow you to get around this problem.

    Hey Dennis!
    Im new in this hobby,but im wonder,can this kk2 calibrate every type of esc,im thinkig of buying q-brain from hk, or do i have to buy that card to calibrate, and what do you think about that q-brain esc?. Does the kk2 came with the latest fw, if not how do i get it?
    // Andreas

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 лет назад

      I'm not sure if the KK2 can calibrate every type of ESC. But I do know that you can calibrate your ESCs without the KK2 since each type of ESC has its own calibration method. I normally calibrate my ESCs manually without the KK2. I'm not sure about the q-brain ESC, but it looks interesting. Let me know what you find out. The KK2 may come with the latest firmware, but that's dependent on where you purchase it. Definitely check the specs listed from wherever you're purchasing.

      Hi Roge, I'm surprised to hear that you're having problems with stability. Especially with a ready to fly quad from HobbyKing. If it's a small quad I would recommend bringing the gains down a good bit. Do you have a link to the quad that you purchased?

    Ciao Dennis, ho guardato il video che mi hai consigliato ma non ho risolto il problema, o meglio non riesco a usare Alarm voltage. Nessuno mi sa dire come si fa, a questo punto penso che si possa fare il settaggio solo se la centralina di volo ha una sua batteria dedicata. Per me non c'è nessuna altra spiegazione. Ciao e grazie ancora. SILVANO

    Where should the power from my UBEC be connected ? If it's to the Rx as
    it is in every other application then I don't get M1 to be the power
    supply. Do I splice the UBEC into M1 Red & Brown ? There are some
    critical steps in the instructions missing.
    Next - when I get into
    ESC calibration mode on full throttle I get 1 beep 4 times then 2 beeps 4
    times then 3 X 4 then 4 X 4 etc ad infinitum. ESCs are MultiStar OPTO 20A.

      אלכס זינגר You've done it the right way by only leaving power from one of the ESC connections. I've done it many times without removing any power leads and have never run into problems, but the safe way is to do what you're doing. Good luck with your setup.

    Hii,
    I have a problem I bought the kk 2.1.5 board already with the DJI F450 Quadcopter, and when I do the accelerometer calibration it always calibrates with
    ACC x: 512 OK
    ACC y: 512 OK
    ACC z: 512 OK
    In the sensor test menu, I always show the result 512 for all calibrations.
    And when I try to fly with the drone it doesn’t stay stable, it always tends to the right and turns upside down.
    Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      Pavlo Vlastos Check that your sticks are not reversed because sometimes that happens. So down and to the right physically may end up top and to the left. Most TX models have the ability to view the display of the sticks on the screen. Another issue may be that your down position isn't low enough so you may need to trim the throttle down just as a test. There are so many things that could go wrong here, but if you feel you've done the proper calibration and everything is connected correctly then it may be a TX config issue.

    • @propfella
      @propfella 9 лет назад

      Exactly what I would have said Dennis. Some gremlin could have been introduced when reflashing. Using the latest non-beta firmware should be the best and as I've been saying earlier, make sure the board, not so much the quad frame is level. Obviously your Gyro is out of range and perhaps a recalibration will fix it. Hang on... it's a cased board. I assume it's up the right way ??? The label must be DOWN. Having it up will throw the gyro right out. Other than that it could be a bad board.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      mingiasi I'd try to do an individual throttle calibration for each ESC. Perhaps that can help. If that doesn't help swap that motor out with one of your others to try and determine if it's an issue with the motor or ESC. Good luck and keep us posted.

    • @mingiasi
      @mingiasi 9 лет назад

      Dennis Baldwin OK but what if i have one of those 4in1 qbrain esc? same ?
      Also the throttle input is stable for 1-2 seconds then goes ballistic. it seems motors 1 and 4 spin up for some reason like it's trying to level. Ive been through the settings twice now.. still clueless.
      edit: Only thing i havent yet messed around with is mixer settings. any hint how they supposed to be set?

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    You don't technically need a PDB, but you need a way to power all your ESCs from your battery. The PDB is generally the cleanest way to do this, but if you look around for pigtails you'll see that you can have power from your battery cable split into multiple leads to feed your ESCs. You can even make your own, which I've done a few times. It's kind of a pain but sometimes gets the job done nicely.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Yes, this could carry a GoPro. You'll need a good way to mount it or a gimbal. There's a tab on the bottom plate that you could mount it to. Yes, auto-level returns the quad back to level if you're pitching and rolling in any direction.

      Anthony Dixon Hi there. I haven't setup a tri before so I don't know if there's something specific to the tri configuration, but one thing that may be worth checking is that your ESCs are calibrated. Otherwise that could cause one motor to spin faster than the others and cause the behavior you're seeing. Have you done the KK calibration routines? Those are a couple things that come to mind.

      There are a few videos on RUclips which give tutorials on how to calibrate ESCs with the KK2 board. The usual word of warning, remove the props first. It involves holding down buttons 1 and 4 whilst powering up your quad, with the throttle on the TX at maximum. Wait for the booting beeps to finish and then lower the throttle to idle, wait for the beeps to finish and power off you quad then your TX. .. It's a rather awkward procedure to carry out with only two hands. I made a power lead up which goes between the quad and the battery. Another trick is grabbing an interested bystander to power up the quad for you. Others use the old washing pegs to hold the buttons down :-) Good Luck and happy flying.

      When you switch on for a fly try making sure the quad is sitting as close to level as you can. Other than that, I've seen two H8Cs behave in a similar fashion. Both of them had one bad motor. Najibul Haque Sorry to hear that. It really took me a bunch of trial and error to get my KK tuned in. All I can say is hang in there and lightly tune your params. I've found that making too large of an adjustment can make tuning a big hassle to get to values that work. The 450 size frame is a very common one so you should be able to work from the gains in this video. Hang in there and don't give up.

      A few possibilities:
      1. Your Self-Level "P" settings are too high. Essentially your quad overcorrects one direction, then overcorrects the other way. I fly a 450 X-Quad with a KK and I've got my P settings down to 30.
      2. Your props are wildly unbalanced.
      3. You're using ESCs without the SimonK firmware and they're not responding quickly enough to throttle changes.
      That would be my list of off the top of my head.

    • @everyoneindhaka
      @everyoneindhaka 10 лет назад

      thanks for replying guys. i tried a couple of other values but it didn't work. it still wobbles about its axis violently in the air. to check if there was something wrong with the setup i hooked up the old kkmulticopter v5.5, and it flies fine. the motors, props and ESCs are all working fine.
      its only with the new 2.1.5 that im having the wobbling issue. it wobbles with or without the self-level function on. id rather have it fly stable first and then turn on the self-level.
      I haven't heard of the SimonK firmware for escs tho. i wonder if its only required for the 2.1.5 board. ill have to look into that.
      but once again thanks for the insight guys :)

    • @propfella

      One tip I always give is, NEVER EVER use other people's settings. They can cause more trouble than they're worth. I find it better to try the quad out before adjusting anything. Just a good level when setting up the basics and suck it and see. The calibrating of ESCs many people have trouble with. Follow the DHDSRacer's (I think that's his ID) video here on RUclips and you should be OK. Then test using low throttle to see if the quad is going to behave and then start adjusting. Just remember to take the settings a little at a time. It is an art of sorts, once you get the feel of which does what it gets easier. I've managed to do the basics setup on a KK2 and then take off and fly pretty well. A few minor adjustments and everything seemed to slot into place. I just wish they were all so easy. Yes I've copied those settings into an almost identical build and it flew like a house brick. :-)

    A 25-30C rating should be okay. The AeroSky that I have does not have prop washers. I definitely recommend upgrading to the Turnigy 9X at some point. Just keep in mind you'll need to get a new RX because the AeroSky RX isn't compatible.

    Hi, i have turnigy multistar 30 amp esc and flashed it with simonk. Now i am wondering should i connect all 4 escs to the kk2 board with hot and negative wire on. and also from kk2 board to the receiver with all three wires(servo wire)X4 wires. Hope i can make u understand with my little knowledge of English.Thnks

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 лет назад

      Hi, I've connected my KK2 many times with ESCs that have a BEC. I've done this without removing the power and ground cable on the servos so you should be fine. I know some pilots recommend keeping only one ESC w/ BEC and for all others only using the signal pin, but from my experience it should work without having to do that. I haven't used Multistar ESCs but my ESCs did have BECs and SimonK firmware.

    is it possible to do this with different esc's? i have one Turnigy Plush and 3 turnigy mutlistars. not sure if that is a good idea, but so far the only probrlemy i have is my flight time is 5mins :( and the whole thing shuts off at 8 volts (including the kk 2.0 board) ??????

  • @bli19ful
    @bli19ful 10 лет назад

    My team already setup like your setting, but the quadcopter is not flying vertically when we just pull up the throttle. It will just rotate right itself. If we then adjust move the rudder to the right, it will also rotate right itself. Do you know how to adjust it?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 лет назад

      Have you checked your motor rotations and that you have the proper props for the motor - clockwise vs counter-clockwise rotation. That sounds like the problem to me, but if that's not the case then check out www.garagepilots.com and post your question in the forums over there. Thanks.

    • @propfella
      @propfella 9 лет назад

      There is no way a quad would ever get off the ground if a motor was reversed or a prop not correct. I do wish people would stop giving that advice. I know of one guy who was told the same story and he reversed what he thought to be the offending one and his quad did an immediate flip and broke two arms and a motor mount. If a quad is able to lift off it's neither motor direction or props upside down. It sounds to me he has either his sticks set up incorrectly. His board definitely isn't getting the right instructions from his TX. Or the board has been set up incorrectly, possibly not being dead level during calibration. I prefer the latter.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    I would say a good battery would be something like a 3S 2500 mA or 3000 mA battery. You could probably go a little larger, but you'll need to consider the weight that this will add to your setup.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Are you using the AeroSky TX and are you able to arm and fly? That would at least tell me that your sticks are operating correctly. BTW, please checkout garagepilots . com and post in the forums. We can help you out over there. Thanks!

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Have you verified that your rudder channel isn't reversed? A simple test would be to go down and to the left to see if it arms. Another check is to make sure your throttle isn't reversed or no arming sequence will work. Let me know what you find out.

    To power the board, when you have all 4 motors connected, does the power come from the first motor, coming from the battery

    • @dennisbaldwin

      Yes, the ESC plugged into M1 is what powers the KK2. Hope that helps.

  • @dennisbaldwin

    Right :) Arming is necessary and you only need to learn how to do it once. Unless you switch to a different flight controller where the arming sequence is different. Hope you're in the air now.

    Dennis thank you! With DEVO7 I get THSTK error on powering with throttle up. If I power and then raise the stick, impossible to bind afterwords.I actually gave up with the DEVO7 since my post here, and moved to a turnigy9X. I am still not flying though, for a "little problem". Posted a full report of my experience on my website, should it be of any interest.

    Hey there....needs some advice on the esc's.....more specfically esc's that are linear. I blew up a KK board when I removed the
    middle red wires from 3 of them. Im a little hesitant to install the esc's with all the wires in as I have a different quad. With different esc's. But the esc's are linear. I just dont want to blow up the esc's and the board again.
    So this is where your advice comes in. So I have plush 25amp esc's. From what I know they are linear. Which means built in bec's. From anyone's experience would I be safe to connect the esc's without removing the middle (red) wires on 3 of them?

      +drone19730602 This is probably my favorite thread on the subject: fpvlab.com/forums/showthread.php?29139-Why-disconnect-redundant-power-from-esc-s-bec you should be safe without removing the power lead....at least with CC3D I've done it many times over and over....with linear regulators.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 лет назад

      Diego Vera jimenez I'm wondering if you want to be in Mode 1 or Mode 2? Mode 2 is what I fly in and it means the throttle is on the left. So the throttle is all the way down and I can arm. Hopefully you have the right mode transmitter and just need to configure it.

    Would anyone recommend this to a beginner for their first quad? I'm looking for something not too expensive to get started with that I can use on a few different builds while still being decent and easy to use for all of them.

    • @DigitalJesuit
      @DigitalJesuit 9 лет назад

      My personal preference for a beginner is something in the X230-250 class. The Diatone 250 is a decent frame that can take hard knocks. You can even get a complete kit from Hobbyking that has everything but the radio, flight controller and charger.... Total cost with EVERYTHING is between $180-$240.
      Here is an integration tutorial I made for that kit:
      ruclips.net/video/r8ALzUluyXM/видео.html
      Good luck!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      Viizzai It's not a bad setup for a first quad, but is largely dependent on what you're looking to do. The 450 size frame is popular, but I normally recommend smaller. Here is a build I've been working on over the years:
      www.thingiverse.com/thing:463579
      Event if you're not interested in the frame the components are good for a 250 size build. BTW I haven't flown the setup that @user/gadgettts recommends but it looks pretty good. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
