It was only a few days ago that I came across your channel; and I can't tell you how grateful I am for your efforts! I live in India and here persecution of Christians is coming back. Stories like today's give me great encouragement and hope. Thank you.
As a muslim, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. The chapter 18 of the Qur'an, Surah al-Kahf (The Cave) is a very intriguing chapter in my estimation; and getting access to the Chrisitian understanding of those events is certainly very interesting. The Qur'an says about this incident: "We have adorned the earth with attractive things so that We may test people to find out which of them do best, but We shall reduce all this to barren dust. Do you find the Companions in the Cave and al-Raqim so wondrous, among all Our other signs?" (18:7-9)

“And may God awake you at the proper time.” Love that! One of my favorite stories from the early Church. It is still in the Roman Martyrology, but few in the West read that anymore.
Hilarious, brothers. I was literally taking a 3 hour nap in the middle of the workday, which I don’t typically do, feeling super drowsy for some reason and then after waking I get on RUclips and this pops up. Was beginning to think I gave into sloth but I’m taking this video as a providential sign that I just needed to rest more and trust Jesus to work things out in my life even when I am not working, striving, or fighting; for “He gives His beloved sleep.”
Discovered this today, on August 4, 2024, Sunday of the Seven Sleepers. I've been in Orthodoxy for 2+ years now and had never heard of these guys. I was wondering at liturgy today who they were and hoped our priest would preach about them, but he's on a prayer series right now so he didn't. Thankfully our parish scholar posted your video in Realm, so now I know. I particularly love that you tied it to modern stories that are similar, showing the Christian roots of things we think of as secular. I subscribed and look forward to more!
THANK YOU RUclips algorithm ❤ i would have never discovered this wonderful channel. Really disappointed I've been to Ephesus in modern day Turkey and no one ever mentioned this legend or offered to take us to the cave. But did go to a monastery in the hills were it is said st Peter took Mary mother of Jesus before they left i believe for Egypt.
Hi I'm newly baptized. I love to read about the saints... Can you recommend any books or collections? Thank you for this channel. May you also be blessed
Definitely ask your priest, he'll have some good sources. There are a number of good books and websites and also Orthodox calendar apps for your phone that are really useful
@@Patristix thank you for your reply.. I will do that. Again, thank you for your work on this beautiful channel. I have learned much. May you also be blessed.. -Michael
This story is so famous that it even made it into the Qur’an. I grew up Muslim, now I’m a follower of Jesus. The Chapter/Surah of the Qur’an is Al-Kahf/The Cave, referring to the people of the cave. It mentions a group of men facing persecution, sleeping in a cave for hundreds of years, and coming out to find the town was now ruled by a peaceful emperor. Word for word, i dont remember if it is in the Hadith or the Quran, I remember the scene of the coin, where they realize how long they have slept because of the old emperor being on the coin.
Ex-Muslim here as well. I didn't know about the coin scene so I think it's probably from the Hadith. I just remember that it didn't make sense to me at all when I was a Muslim. Yes, it showed God's power but seemed very arbitrary why would He choose this way of showing His power. It makes incredibly more sense now that I understand its link to our Lord's Resurrection. Even funnier to think that Islam also teaches Christ's crucifixion and death are some kind of misundertanding. I just wish more Muslims who read/listen to Surat Al-Kahf every Friday would know what it actually means. And would repent and follow Christ.
Prophet Muhammad was asked by some rabbis three questions: about the youths in the cave, about the nature of the spirit, and about dhul qarnayn. A portion of Surah Kahf was revealed by Allah in response to two of those questions.
This story is also mentioned in the Qur’an. As a Muslim, I always know and believe that Christianity and Islam are very close and have the same root. May peace be upon us all.
I believe this is not a tale but a real event that happened at that time. And the church recognised it to be true. Glory to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit One God unto ages and ages. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. John 20:29 (KJV) ....: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
I'm Muslim girl and I love all Abrahamic religion people Christians and Jews and this story we have it in the Qur'an it named the cave it has the seven sleepers story and Thier dog
The number 7 has a lot of appearances in stories and in Christianity. So perhaps the dwarfs are drawing on the same number? It is the Biblical number of completion.
The story of the Seven Sleepers was retold a century later in the Quran. The main points are the same but the length of sleep and a few details are changed. So it's the same story retold
interesting. in the western version of this story malchus only realizes that so much time had passed when the bishop explained it to him, rather than realizing before his interaction with the bishop
I know the Orthodox tradition considers itself as one entity but why is there a Greek and Russian church? Like do they each focus on a different aspect of the faith (like would russians focus on suffering while greek focuses on the esoteric) do to their general congregation or is the difference caused by something else? Or is it just geographic domains of the different Bishops. (Also a video of the hierarchy would be cool)
@@Patristix then why isn't there an American or Australian orthodox church? I'm just getting into the faith so I want to know these differences before I jump in fully.
@@ChristianEphraimson There may be down the road, these things take time and Orthodoxy has been out in America and Australia a VERY short time in the grand scheme of history. Would definitely recommend as soon as possible visiting an Orthodox Church and asking all your questions of a priest there! The internet and books is no match for the chats and discussions and hearing our services. We often say to those curious about Orthodoxy to 'come and see', rather than 'read and research', though of course both will happen. God bless!
Puzzled by ending"factual" confirmations,&,if claiming a miracle or simply a famous tale. All the historical confirmations were what one would expect in either case while the chance of any details end abruptly with "Oh,they died that night. No more questions." Fun story but I expect if there was any stronger facts you'd have said (?) or are there?
That's truly astonishing story, and I enjoyed this episode. Sadly, because of this tale found its way to the Qur'an, I highly doubt its reliability until I could explore the original sources more.
These individuals where true Christians in that they didn’t worship Christ and only saw him for what he was and is…a prophet of God. Their beautiful story takes place almost a century before the council of nicea decided to make Christ a god and develop the trinity. The early Christian’s were monotheist and did worship idols or men the way modern Christian’s do.
The story was first recorded in the early 500s, and the sleepers were reported to have awoken in the year AD 434. The first council of Nicea (which did not create Trinitarian theology, but confirmed it as dogma) was in AD 325 almost a hundred years BEFORE the awakening of the sleepers. The earliest found record of the event is by a Trinitarian Christian theologian named Jacob of Serugh, writing in the early 500s. There was a church dedicated in memory of the sleepers by at least AD 520. The Quaran was compiled a century AFTER this around the year 610.
That's an assumption for which you can't prove. Besides, even this story is any true, this disprove the claims of Islam, for they would have believed Jesus to be the begotten Son of God, crucified, buried and risen from the death.
This is also mentioned in the Quran chapter 18 of the Quran is called the chapter of the cave it explains how they have run away from the evil ruler who was a pagan
