The flush port is for flushing the power head of salt or brackish water with the engine not running. Impellors are not meant to be run dry. I would never run out of the water without muffs. Muffs are absolutely necessary if engine is running. Don't kill your motor. Nice motor by the way. Regards.

The guy is right! Know how to properly care for your engine, read your manual. I own a df60a suzuki and its awesome!
My new boat came with this exact engine. So far, love it. As pointed out in the comments below, use the earmuffs.

I could not be happier with the outboard. The power is great and I am getting well over 3km per litre. In a slight wind you can't even hear it running
Great way to wreck your impeller. Running it while connected to the water that way is wrong.
