  • 92 Johnson boat motor is retrofitted to work both electric start as well as pull start.
    11 tooth starter and a 74 tooth ring.
    Starter bracket part number 320012.
    Seems like the starter brackets didn't change much from the 1970s to the 1990s. The numbers might have changed slightly.
    You can look on sources like MarineEngine.com or other sites like that. You can do some checking for yourself.
    Parts:
    Starter parts were off a 1976 35hp Evanrude model 35653 onto a 1992 25hp Johnson model j25rend
    NOS OMC 175271 BATTERY CHARGING KIT NOS GENUINE OEM
    Good luck

    It was very good that you put an old (1976-mid 1988) 11 tooth starter on to match the old ring gear. A lot of guys may watch your video and not know that these motors went from an 11 tooth starter to a 9-tooth starter, along with a ring gear change, in mid-1988. Easy for that to cause a mis-match.

    • @mikedurhan9941
      @mikedurhan9941 3 года назад +1

      or, just change the starter gear to an 11 tooth to match the old ring gear.

    You can also use the flywheel from the 70's and 80's 25hp omc motors. They have both the ring gear and pull start option. I just added electric start to a 1996 25hp.

    I must be snorting coke because my 1982 Mariner 10 HP outboard has both electric and the recoil starter on it. I also worked 20 years in the Navy, and all the Zodiacs I drove had both on it also. Over the years there were Evinrude, Johnsons, Mercury, and Mariners and they all had both recoil and electric start on them.

    Ian,
    This is a very good video that explains in detail how to upgrade an outboard motor.
    I have and old 9.9hp Chrysler, probably 70’s early 80’s model and I’m working on doing the same process as you did so I would like to ask for your help because I’m new to outboard motors.
    At minute 7:50 you refer to a charging system... is this like an alternator in a car?
    I have seen the starter, no problem…at minute 8:07 you show a solenoid, did you add this with the starter or was in the motor already?
    At minute 8:15 to talk about a starter button, I’m guessing to bought that too, so I need to ask you; in order to do the upgrade, you added the starter button, the solenoid, electric starter, charger and the wheel?
    Thanks in advanced Sir.

    • @Ian-Threaded
      @Ian-Threaded  5 лет назад

      blademex correct. Yes, you nailed it. Charging system was new old stock (not really required) the solenoid was a Johnson but the button was Napa autoparts. Thanks for the comment - Ken

    I just saw this video. I have an old 1971 Evinrude 18HP. It is manual start and I want to convert it to electric, as I am old and cannot pull start it anymore. Can you send me a list of what you think I need to do this. I already have the electric flywheel, but no switch, charger, bracket to hold starter or starter. What else am I missing? I can't afford a new motor and this one seems to do a great job on my 14ft alum boat.....i.e. when I can get it started......Thanks

    • @Ian-Threaded
      @Ian-Threaded  7 лет назад +2

      Sorry I didn't get back to you. My part list wont match yours because I stole from a 70s motor to put on my 92 motor. Your motor should be easier to work with because the 70s motors electric start parts seem to be more plentiful.

    How do you hot wire an outboard without using an ignition switch? Need to just get fire to the engine so I can see if this 115 83 Johnson will run before investing money in it. It has about 90 lbs of compression on all cylinders. Not great but I think that should be enough to run. Been sitting for years so it may get better compression once engine starts up. It turns over good when I jump it from positive battery to starter. But not getting fire as switch does not activate. I think one of the relays from the switch is bad so I can not get fire to the starter solenoid. Got boat, motor and trailer for $100. So I am trying to get the motor running to put on my other boat, and burn the junker boat. Any answers on hot wiring a circuit without switch to test motor?

    • @Ian-Threaded
      @Ian-Threaded  7 лет назад

      There is a lot going on there but normally the off switch only grounds it. The shear spinning of the fly wheel creates the spark. Find a buddy that loves to tinker with motors that may be able to help.

    Hi Ian - Question: I have the came motor (prob diff year) - but my carb bowl drain screw is just a slotted head screw - this one has a brass nipple with a hose attached - where is that hose leading to? - or is it just a 12" drain-hose to make winterizing/draining easier - and if so, what kind of shutoff is at the end of it?
