- Since it was first announced in April 2022 the Synesso ES.1 has been an espresso machine that I've been waiting and wanting to get my sticky barista hands on, and the time has finally arrived. So today I'm sharing the unboxing and setup, chatting about some of its unique features, as well as a few of my first impressions.

Finally someone is meeting the needs of the unmarried investment bankers who worked as baristas in grad school. Before now, those guys didn’t have many options. Great job, Synesso!
good one
Looks decent. 😁
Haha yeah, I’m sure the decent comparisons will be trickling in, at least in terms of the looks.
I feel like this is what the Decent should’ve looked like. As awesome as that machine is, it always looked and sounded like something cobbled together at RadioShack to me. This one looks sleek.
😂
Budum tsss😅
@@j.r.1030the decent having a single boiler for me puts me off. This however is exactly what i'd want in a machine
very excited for more content with this machine!
Nice, succinct introduction!
I actually like the high clearance under the portafilter. Most other machines that incorporate this large amount of clearance also provide an accessory that is a firmly plantable rack that can be put on top of the drip tray to decrease the drop when you're not making tall drinks. Not sure where you find those, but were I interested in this machine, I would want that accessory. Looking forward to your future comments on this machine!
It would be nice to see how accessible this machine is for making internal repairs or adjustments - including good views of the internal layout, and what's where. And how quickly you can access these.
Looking forward to the full review, I'd love some machine-specific feature comparisons to machines like the Slayer and GS3, since they all live at a similar price-point.
Nice video. Good job I was sitting down when you said the price. Will still watch the main video and hope the machine really shines. Take care, all
The 3L tank seems great for someone who can't plumb in a machine! The Linea Mini's is just too small, and the easy access to fill it looks great.
I also think the height of the group is an asset, and the included rubber mat seems like a nice touch.
$9K is steep, but for a 'baby MVP', if it's that good and reliable, seems within reason.
Don’t knock the elevated grouphead. You can always add something under your receptacle to bring it closer, but without that distance you are limited to tiny cups and no scales. I can see where this aesthetic appeals to you, looking forward to deeper dive.
Yes! This was one frustration I had with my Linea Mini. I used an Acaia Lunar scale (not recessed in the drip tray), and barely had room to fit a cappuccino cup with a bottomless portafilter. I love the elevated grouphead, I'm sure you could sit the machine on something raised a few inches to fit a Nucleus STEM stand if you want to weigh shots or just bringing the cup closer to reduce splatter.
@@kayashimz and how much head room do you get with the Linea Micra… 😳
looking forward to a full review. As you have experience with the You, GS3 and now the ES1 a comparison of all 3 would be very helpful!
Yeah I’m hard at work on that full review. Not next week but maybe the week after. Unfortunately the YOU is on its way to the next person as it was a loaner as well, but you’ll hear some comparisons in the video for sure.
Great review as always! For the in-depth review I would be interested to understand the difference/positioning against the Synesso ES.1, Sanremo You and Decent Espresso you reviewed earlier. Seems like they are trying to achieve similar goals in their own way. Looking forward to the review!
$9000 for a home machine is nuts. I bought a Bianca V3 for ~$3000 but I feel like once you get >$5000 your espresso machine probably costs more than all of your kitchen appliances (Fridge, washing machine, etc) combined and it seems a bit ridiculous.
I don't think is ridiculous, it's all about perspective, my grandpa will say is ridiculous to buy a car for 20,000 when you can spend 5 for a used, or is ridiculous to buy an iPhone or android for over $500 bucks, there's Fridges, stove and other appliances that cost over 10K is all subjective based on what's in you wallet
How do you like your Bianca?
@@fori24 love it, I bought the aftermarket switches, and it's super consistent
LOVE Synesso machines! the first shop i worked at had a Sabre and the cool touch steam wand was game changing. Build quality 1000.
They definitely are well made machines. I used them in my only on bar cafe job and had few complaints and the steam wand is definitely nice.
Can’t wait for the full review. I feel like steam doesn’t always match pro machines, does this one? Also eager to hear about temp stability at the group as well as sharing profiles like the decent.
Excited to hear more about this machine, it really appears to be a dream machine! Could you give a bit of a comparison against the Decent? It appears to have the same sort of functionality as the Decent, but it obviously quite a bit more expensive. Is it a more robust and polished Decent? Or is it toned down in terms of it's programmability and more straight-forward, giving a more adjustable than regular espresso experience, but not veering on the infinite adjustments of the Decent?
This is such a well done video! Your quality is impressive! Which mic are you using to get such incredible audio?
This seems to be the Rolls Royce of home espresso machines. Looking forward for a review with a comparison in espresso quality out of a less expensive unit.
After watching your introduction, we are very eager to place one in our showroom!
Nice Vid, would love to see a comparison between gs3 mp, also looking to know how different is steaming is between these two
OMG - this device is HUGE!!!!
Excellent Turducken reference! I miss football with that guy . . .
Nice looking machine, beyond my means, Love your Videos :)
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
Thanks for doing the unboxing. I’m curious to understand in details how the profiling works. It is flow based or pressure based controlled by the pomp.
Great video as always! I wonder how this would compare to Victoria Arduino Prima. You also sound a bit sick (?) maybe, if so, get well soon. 💜
The comparison with decent AND gs3, is inevitable
I used to work with an MVP, i didn't find the pressure profile management as irritating as Strada, but the build quality and the reliability was at the top
Double the price of a Decent...not saying it doesn't deserve to be that expensive...but.....dang
@@docforven Yes it's too expensive, from a certain price and more, you buy the brand name, not the performance
Es1 vs Gs3. Nice video as always.
Thank you my friend.
Of course! Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!
i guess to help close the gap between the group head and shot glass use a scale, but it probably wudnt close it by much. Im a fan of manual espresso, but having 3 settings memorized for ur shot is p damn sexy.
This man's b-roll is on another level.
Great Film.
How long be ready for first shot? I think it's important for home use.
Is the steam as good as M.V.P?
Based on the hardware, how much potential after upgrading the software in the future?
Looking forward to the full review
while it looks nice and i think in hand it will feel nice also however keen to hear thought of this compared to the YOU, along with the paddle control, more on this movement like micro adjustments etc and how that works.
This machine… though I have GS3 MP, this is my dream machine.
Would be interested whether you feel the 3.5 - 9.5 bar pressure range is a limitation.
Intuitively I would think that you get a better result in the cup with a Decent, as the community is big and they have so many fancy profiles... I'm curious how the ES.1 competes.
Was waiting for the release of this so long i went ahead with the gs3mp over a year ago
The es1 does look beautiful.
I get that the hand on Paddle experience is so different from gs3 or bianca but the big question from me is. ...Do the benefits of having a digital repeatable system, outweigh the longevity and service simpliciity of machines without it? .
7:10 I've recently purchased the Gagguino upgrade kit in order to access some of the more pro-sumer upgrades. I'm personally surprised that more computer-controlled machines aren't coming out at a cheaper pricepoint than the Decent, considering the kit was just under $200 and thrown onto something sturdy like a rancilio silvia, you get a machine thats going to provide a lot of features and will be pretty great for something under $1000. I'd like to see machines like the acasco start to put smarter features onto a really well designed thermoblock machine. but it seems there's always a gap in the espresso machine market between what is possible for the price, and what you generally see. most new espresso machine innovation is for expensive machines ($2000+) and I understand the need to recover R&D+profit margin, but maybe one day we'll see a cheaper thermoblock machine with all the smart features
I’m sure we will be entering that era of smart relatively “affordable” pro-sumer espresso machines within the next 5 years. Right now most smart machines coming out are 5k+ but I don’t see that being a sustainable choice considering many people don’t want to shell that much out for a machine especially considering what you said about the Gaggiuno mod. Things are getting real crazy for espresso machines these days.
Good point ☝️. Let's wait for a sub 2k machine. Should be more than possible!
The Kafmasino seams to be just that. Unfortunately only ships to Europe.
VBM Domobar Super Electronic, profiling and gear pump to boot. approx 1800 euros plus shipping/applicable tax
@@s96822 , 😲 never seen a review of the VBM. Looks interesting
Sweet lookin machine.
Nice looking machine. At a price like that, won't that price out a lot of coffee lovers(such as myself) from getting an exceptional piece of equipment?
A comparison with GS3 would be very interesting.
we want to see with GS3 or R9one and what is the best for use 😊
4:17: that's it... for 9k the shower screen screw is sticking out.... It brings back the memories with my rancilio silvia (for about 400USD :D) as others mentioned already, it would be great to compare this with Descent.
hi would you suggest the es1 over the Sanremo you and what's our opinion regarding it
Would love to hear your thoughts on how smooth and responsive the touch screen interface is.
Definitely will have more to say on this!
I like the space between group head and tray, I always use 12oz hot beverage paper cups and lids to go.
I got a synchronika, and I love the space the e61 groups give you. I'm sure this fancy machine would be a nice experience and awesome coffee as well
Yeah I can definitely see the height can have some benefits too. In the end I like more than less. The Linea Micra is way too tight of a fit.
I noticed the flow rate dropped from 6 to 2 ml per s when the pump was activated to 9 bar on that graphical display. Is that normal with pressure profiling?
LOL a bit on complaining about too much space below the grouphead. Normally it's the opposite. At this point, I'd be curious to know what you think the exact amount of space should be. Looking forward to the full review.
pressure \ flow profiling wise what is the main difference between this ES1 and a GS3 (or a Decent) ? It doesn't seems to be able to adjust on the fly pressure (let alone flow) like the GS3 ?
Dream machine. This is flow profiling machine like Slayer if I not mistaken right? Btw, love your content brotha 🫡
Does it have and require any mobile app?
Can it pair a BT scale and do gravimetric dosing?
9K is steep, but then there's the just introduced LM Strada X1 for 20K 😬
Also this has the best accessories included of any machine that I've seen.
Please do a Synesso ES.1 vs La Marzocco GS3MP 🙏
Oh damn, was about to sleep but now i can watch this first impression before doing that ahhaha
Haha I hope it was worth losing a little bit of sleep for!
Thank you so much for the video!
Can this machine be used for a small cafe?
in travels to many parts of the world i have seen prosumer and even home machines used in cafes successfully pursuant to their volume. in se asia this machine would very likely be the centerpiece of a cafe.
I wonder if what’s your take about the Meticulous?
Since you are not controlling the pressure with the paddle, can you do a blooming shot?
Unfortunately I don't think is possible since there's no way to program a stop between paddle taps. You'd have to restart the shot completely, thats the only way you could do something like a blooming shot.
Impressive Machine. But maybe will upgrade my old Slayer Espresso 1 group to La Marzocco Strada X1 in the future
Intervals. Plastic tubing or all metal water pathway?
does it do lever profile tho?
The obvious visual comparison would be with the Decent, though the Decent's internals are totally different, with immediate heat up time, not the standard 25 minutes. Still, I don't like the dancing lights on top of Decent's grouphead controller. Also, it seems like the Decent suffers from software issues. Hopefully the Synesso is reliable. It's a very interesting machine, indeed. Stay awesome.
@davidhunternyc1 For the aesthetically sensitive, everything can be done from the screen & fit a new blank lid which does away with the light show.
People also have Wi-Fi linked to larger, more upmarket tablets & mount them separately, which reduces the clutter of the machine & workspace.
The software issues you speak about could be from adventurous users who opt into the "nighty" beta software program to give feedback for new features. Once the glitches get ironed out, they are made available for all users via over-the-air updates.
People say that the Decent is expensive, but the flexibility & experience of ownership is amazing. I love the almost open-source-like forum community, some even contribute to development.
quite a decent espresso machine
Hi. From first look, I have a question about the material of flow pedal and of the frame of the screen. Looks like a plastic ( I noticed the same in the new LM Strada).
It's powder coated aluminum.
I want to see some real Jackson Pollock art with some high flow shots
Can we affor it?
Omg, what a monster. I like it (except the price)
Hey Spro, I don't know where most of your viewers come from, but could you pleaaaaaaase also convert to °C when discussing temperatures? I know it sounds lazy, but nothing breaks the flow of watching an enjoyable and informative video as having to look up and read temp. conversion tables.
Love your content, greetings from the Netherlands
Dutchie as well with similar experience 😂
I hate when Americans review American products made in America and don't take eropean feelings into account
@@Alwaysaspy uhm, ok? Feeling better, chief?
@@TheGroundedCoffee I wasn't the eurotrash who got upset to begin with. Sorry, player. 😎

Does it have gravimetric dosing with a bluetooth scale? I haven’t been able to find information anywhere that it does, but I would think it’s a major oversight if it doesn’t for such a machine
I can say it doesn’t have…yet. So having had and continued conversations with Synesso they’ve kind of set this machine up to do a lot that it isn’t doing at the moment. They essentially want to leverage feedback from users to develop and add more functionality.
Great video as always! Meticulous has all of that and more. 9k, nuts, you could buy almost 7 of them.
Great point, for this price I wish to have gravimetric profiling ans stopping at my desired weight.
I understand that the machine is stunning but wow $9k is a bit insane. I feel like the high end home machine market is going to be pretty competitive in the near future so I’m curious to know where this will stand at that time.
Yeah I think $9k is probably the most expensive home-focused machine I’ve had my hands on. And considering every year most machines go up in price, I think this is as cheap as this machine will be. The interesting thing will be what the pre-owned price points will look like.
Agreed. Looking at almost slayer single group territory
Def agreed! What can be done by Decent is offered here for that price gap? Please let's not say that's hobbyists preference!
@@Sprometheus i have never seen pre owned decents for sale except in limited numbers by the company themselves. i would say the preowned synesso market for this model will be very limited PS; just saw one on ebay at 4100 usd
Considering the price, and like you said, the line between commercial and home machines keeps getting thinner; when does it start to become more practical to buy commercial 1 groups for home?
If u really into to coffee like roasting coffee or have a cafe
The height is weird. Maybe they intended for it to be used primarily with spouted filters?
Possibly, but considering it’s made for home and light commercial it seems like they would make it more of an all around option. I think in the end it’s just a design choice to fit all the internals in and maybe it just ended up with that big gap.
I took the first bite of my lunch when you said $9000 and almost spit it out.
how is it going?-enjoyed-very excellent !be well. 🤟
It’s going well! Thanks for watching and the kind words.
Pretty Decent
9k. Home market? What am i missing? Other than a 7 figure annual income.
It’s over $9000!!!
Sure, but what’s an extra $100 or $225 for wood handles when you’re already paying $9,000? Haha
@6:50 someome is upset with headspace 😮
I was interested. Midway through the video i decided to pull up the price. Seriously, the market is getting ridiculous. 10k for a home espresso machine.
Is it an E61 group head?
Nope, Synesso has their own group design, but it mostly resembles the La Marzocco style saturated group.
awaits for your full review video...
Coming by the end of the month.
Is it 58mm?
It is indeed!
Did you buy the machine?
I did not. I’ve been asking Synesso for a loaner since it was announced in April 2022, squeaky wheel gets the grease haha.
@@Sprometheus long term hopefully!
Wow you could buy 15 Breville barista expresses - one for every room in your mansion
It's a nice-looking machine. I don't know if my consciousness will allow me to spend 9k while I can buy the leva x 1 for 6k more 🥶
Haha yeah I feel you. The Leva though is a very different user experience, and more of a centerpiece than a workhorse
@@Sprometheus the leva is a workhorse at a high volume cafe. benjamit coffee, chonburi, thailand
If there was any questions I could have answered about a machine of such build quality and provenance is:
1) Does the Decent, at half its price, keep up?
2) In the era of the approachable Gagguino project and other espresso machine modification communities, could someone make its virtual equivalent?
3) Where is it manufactured?
You should just mention the price at the beginning of the video. Could save a lot of people, like me, a lot of time. 😂
☕☕☕
Love Is Important ❤️ ...
Indeed my friend!
Looks like a really beautiful machine. AT $9000, if I made a shot every day for the next 25 years, it would cost a dollar a shot just for the machine. I don't understand the market, that's just so expensive.
Well, you could also argue that even if you used a nice specialty coffee for all of these shots, you would still get away cheaper than if you went to Starbucks every day ;)
the price man..
So a Decent?
For 10k it better make me dinner
This is definitely the machine Patrick Bateman would buy
No no no no no.
You cannot create such a beast of a machine. A wonderful machine that makes every other brand jealous, and have such a gap between group head and your cup. No.
What were the Synesso design team thinking ?
It can still be solved by selling additional part, which can limit this gap.
You can add a riser to clear the gap. I think you're overreacting.
at $9000 I would rather get bezzera aria which only under $2500
Compare ES1 to Sanremo you🤔
1st look and I thought, this ain't gonna be cheap, 9k........yup, thought so
9k…
It’s a significant price tag that’s for sure.
Very, Decent looking…😊
My association with that brand isn’t as positive. It seems that when I go to espresso bars at airports, they often use it, and the quality is bad. On the other hand, if I see a La Marzocco on the counter, the quality is almost always good (with one ridiculous exception.) Funny how associations are made.
It will be interesting to see how they do in the high end home market.
I can't unsee how dated that massive bezel tiny tablet looks already.
I get that. I sort of have concerns about the reliance on touch screens to begin with, and of course how quickly that tech becomes obsolete.
ad read jump scare
A steal at only $9100.00!! Plus tax, plus shipping and handling…. Of course, you’d be doing your Synesso a serious injustice if you paired it with anything less than the Weber Workshops EG-1 grinder - a bargain at a mere $3895.00. Oh, and of course their Moonraker WDT gadget for a mere $275…. you’ll never be satisfied with your espresso until you’ve spent at least $13,000.00 on your espresso tools.
9k 💀 that is expensive and I wouldn't call this a home machine 2k or 4k is a stretch but doable but 9k is a bit much
Home? WTH
