As an American expat living in London (for 15 years), The Chinese Detective was one of the best things I saw on British television. David Yip is brilliant as Detective Sergeant John Ho. The series is shot in a kind of 'kitchen sink realism' production style in the area of the old London docks, and they don't hold back on the overt and covert racism in the police force. It ran for two seasons. I was able to purchase the DVDs of the series as well as a "region free" DVD player to watch them on. Now residing back in the 'States I have occasional showings of the series with a groups of friends. I must say, I'm disappinted that BritBox hasn't picked this up and made it available for streaming. Shame on them!
Yes, it was quite a realistic portrayal of the seedier side of London in the early 80s, a precursor to the gritty realist crime dramas like 'The Bill' that came later. I also liked seeing Ho's green Morris Traveller 'woodie' car, still a common sight on Britain's roads at that time.
Love this theme tune. Reminds me of being 5 and watching the programme with my mum. She fancied David Yip and always used to say: "He's from Liverpool too." Actually, he looked like my friends dad at school. 😂

There should be a crossover show with Shoestring
