I do utterly despise the people that say he's deadweight in a duo. They are both essential.
who said that? I've always liked him just a tad bit more. His new renditions of these songs are the adult contemporary music I need in my life
If that’s the case, Daryl Hall would’ve been a big solo star. But he isn’t. So there.
I agree!
For what it’s worth, I’ve been listening to their music my entire life and have never thought that!
They both are great soul rock n roll singers
His voice....perfect. His high note gives me chills.
Dwayne Martin his bass voice and his falsetto is awesome
Saw Hall and Oates about 10 years ago in a small venue and they were fantastic. Hate things deteriorated between them so badly. Still, so many great songs to listen to.
Good for him! He always seems overshadowed by Daryl Hall, but he's got some personality and I love his acoustic version.
Beautiful! He is so talented, loving hearing him solo.
I have been a huge fan of Hall and Oates for many, many years. There is no question that John has been overshadowed for many years by Daryl and his side of the bargain. I have always held a special place in my heart for John and the songs he brought to the table over their illustrious carreer. I am very happy to see that the Americana Music Fest held in September in Nashville will be including John Oates on their bill. I plan to corner him and tell him how much he is appreciated by me.
John Oates, One of the Best!!! No matter what year of his career you are hearing, the Voice of this half of the infamous duo Hall and Oates is the most unrecognized voice in the Industry. One of the best TOO.
You learn something every day. Never even imagined John Oates as being the main force with Hall & Oates. Only heard the songs and attributed them totally to Daryl. Clearly I've got a lot of John Oates stuff to watch. Great songs and a bonus to find out about this. Cheers
Everyone that thought John Oates wasn't needed in the Hall n' Oates collabo has just been proven wrong!! John Oates is a genius!!! Darryl Hall is a genius a beast as well, but great minds think alike!!!!
THIS is music. Timeless classic written 40 years ago that will never be forgotten. Most of the crap produced today will be forgotten in 5 years.
I can't agree more. Timeless and keeping great songs alive is so important. This was the best time for music ever! Go Songwriters Circle!!
I came from the future, it only gets worse
Sure. But then again most of the crap that was produced 44 years ago is forgotten by now.
It’s been five years since you posted this. You were right, we forgot. Hall and Oates still rockin’ it, though.
5 years and you were right lol
I've seen Darryl Hall perform as a solo act and was very impressed. I now know that John Oates has got some skills his OWN self. Dan good job Johnny!...
How can you NOT love this song??
Oats, your awesome!!!
Masterpiece! What a wonderful chords progression in this version, can't stop watching it.
John Oates was the muscle behind it all!
I love John Oates

Such an under-rated writer and singer. John Oates is the real deal. Thanks for posting this. Peace
+TheMisterMonkeyman He's not underrated. He is 1/2 of the most successful songwriting duo of all time!
While I'm a big fan of Hall & Oates, the most successful songwriting duo of all time are Lennon-McCartney.
He is better than that dickhead.
He seriously needed his own project
@@romanopaso who are you referring to?
Nice performance. The songs that spring from actual events are often great ones.
I never thought that John Oates has this kind of soulful voice. I mostly hear Daryl's voice everytime I listen to a Hall and Oates song.
listen to the early albums.
Edwin Canlapan you are right, just watch the videos. Daryl was always front and center for whatever reason. I watched a live performance (before all the hits) and john sang a small peace and I was blown away at the soulful sound that was never put as lead in all those hits.
Let's be candid Oates voice can't match Halls. That is why Hall was the lead vocals.
This cokehead was awesome I wish the other could have just shut the fuck let this dude rock.
I think that John is a fine enough vocalist and could've done fine as an equally talented lead singer.
He is a joy to work and sing with and I can assure you, he is one savvy businessman and artist, a rate combination
So glad I found this, but whoever filmed it is clearly not a guitar player. He has such beautiful chord phrasing and I'm not a good enough player to hear the chords and play them... need to SEE them. Camera keeps aiming too high to get most of them (or cutting away). Anyway, love Daryl but have always felt that John was just as good or better. Glad to have found this.
We are always thrilled when John Oates performs at The New York Songwriters Circle, he loves that it is pure songwriting, no computers, nothing but a great song and performer!
HAVE SHARED MY HEART & SOU, RODE TO THE PINNACLE OF EMOTIONAL HIGHS( SAX SOLO)& FALLEN TO THE LOWEST DEPTHS, WROTE MY 1ST(AND BEST0 of 100's of songs(can not sing)"TRYIN' TOO HARD" WITH STIMULIS FROM "SHE'S GONE" IN MEMORY OF ELIZABETH REED"(ALLMANS) & JOHNNY ALMOND'S TENOR IN JOHN MAYALL'S BLUES BREAKER'S " GOING TO CALIFORNIA"> STILL RETAIN VERY 1ST CASSETTE & WITTEN SAM ASH WRITTEN SONG, W/COUSIN JOEL(WYATT) SINGING, ME ON BACKING REALLY STUMBLING PIANO IN PARENTS HOUSE, ON $ 100 STATE OF ART(THEN) SONY CASSETTE TAPE RECORDER & AM/FM(NOT STEREO). THE TAPE STILL SOUNDS LIKE YESTERDAY, PALY IT IN MY ACURA CASSETTE RADIO)
Yes! Beautiful, clean, raw!
I actually searched for a video of John singing by himself. I;m absolutely blown away! I knew him as the guy that could do flips onstage. Very beautiful version!
That's talent, what a great live acoustic performance...one guitar & one great voice
It always amazes me that people go to a gig and then talk over the artist... sheer ignorance. People are not there to listen to you. Great song, great talent.
I saw John Oates in a small venue in SE Pa. Listen to this video to guess how his appearance went. A terrific concert. He was personable, funny, and by the way, a great performer. He said that he went on one of his very first dates as a kid to the theater we were at - Sellersville Theater.
He has so much heart and soul
Just got home from a John Oates concert in Orlando fl. It was incredible and I love the fact that as a 17 year old i was BY FAR the youngest one there. I was born 20 years too late....
Great job Mr. Oates!!! Thanks for this great song and congrats on induction into the RNR HOF...well deserved and long overdue...
killer voice
Good to hear the way John sings it. A little lower and a lotta soul.
I have no particular allegiance or preset penchant for any particular artist but this popularly touted second fiddle to Daryl just knocked my socks off with this performance.I had no idea he was so risibly talented....bravo Mr Oates you have a belated fan
+Simon Lewis ditto- i HAD ALWAYS ASSUMED THAT dARYL CARRIED oATES- But here we see VOICE THAT NEEDS A TRICK HERE AND THERE...BUT!!!! HE DOES NOT HAVE TO TAKE- SECOND IN SOUL, CAN YOU HERE ME!!! BUT!!!!!!
OATES I ORDER YOU TO HOOK UP WITH jOHNY RIVERS, 1000 SONGS. yOU BOTH HAVE SOUL BRO! thINK OF IT, dARYL WILL BE PLAYING SOME GUESTS LAME SONG WHILE YOU ARE PLAYING SECRET AGENT MAN, POOR SIDE OF TOWN, bOB dYLAN'S FAVORITE VERSION OF 49TH STREET. iT IS ENDLESS.
That was awesome!! John’s soulful approach to singing and songwriting has been undervalued for so long because Daryl’s presence and incredible abilities were showcased more. Just my opinion, but I speak from hearing them for close to 50 years and seeing them in a great show back home in the Spectrum in Philly a few times in the 80’s. They should have been hosted the last show ever at the Spectrum, they were next to last. For some reason Pearl Jam was last.
Incomparable talent. Always loved this guy, his writing, persona, etc.
Not to diss Hall but, I always felt John Oates was thee man.
WOW!! Love this guy!
super love love his version. we listen to hall and oates hits like 3-5x a day coz it's their songs which would put my baby to sleep. for a year now i still love listening to their songs 3-5x a day. hahaha.
So good. So good. Philly's own.
Just wow!!! You are even better than the great artist i knew you were...
amazing to share the stage with John and a year later watch him get the Hall of Fame with Darly!! Tina

Love his voice ❤
Great song.
I know she's gone what a voice you don't change thanks guy!
J.o,,THIS IS THE BEST VERSION,,,
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn........... What I'd have given to have been in that room.
GREATEST INSPIRATION TO SONG WRITING IS A BROKEN HEART. I KNOW THIS TOO WELL.
Made my day seeing this video! John Oates is so generous in this video. The other folks on stage were performing with a rock star during this song. Hall & Oates enters the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame today!
In this video John Oates looks and sounds like something out of a coffeehouse somewhere. He has not lost his knack for performance after all these years, nor has he lost his connection with his fans. Brilliant. He and Daryl Hall both deserve all the success they've had and more.
Wow this is awesome. What a voice and talent.
He's got such a great voice , thanks for sharing/ really enjoyed it...now gonna head out on a high and buy 30 dumplings with chile dipping sauce 😬
Brilliant performance Oatsy can really sing
Incredible raw talent, how many can do this live?, thank you John oats for the memory x
Miley Cyrus can. Seriously.
OMGOSH, 💖💖 He's GOT SOOO MUCH SOUL..
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The key change bit was great.. What a talent. Great to see and hear him solo here.. Great voice and playing.
John Oates is an extra talented so is Daryl Both have so much soul in their voices very extraordinary musicians
FANTASTIC JOHN !!!!
He still has it. He was just as important as Daryl was. Theres alot of songs that he was the main singer.
Love it. He’s got skillz
YOUR VOICE IS BEAUTIFUL

Great stuff - and the original long version still gives me chills
Saw Hall and Oates in concert. Last night in Pittsburgh. He's obviously not dead.
3:36 so awesome he looks back at the piano player and is like, " oh hell yeah keep goin! one more! oh he did it this is awesome!" haha awesome song.
This is my favorite song by Hall & Oates. I love this acoustic version. John just ROCKS!!!
This performance is nothing short of awesome. John Oates' vocals are so great and full of feeling. I actually prefer this version of the song than the single which was my favorite Hall and Oates song. I wish he had recorded the single with his lead vocal backed by Daryl Hall.
JOHN OATS IS SPECTACULAR ON LEAD, AS HE IS SINGING DUET OR BACK UP. CHECK OUT HIS ACOUSTIC "SHE'S GONE" IN N.Y.CITY'S GREENWICH VILLAGE MUSIC GATHERING. ALSO RELATES THE ORIGINS OF HIS, YES, HIS SONG " SHE'S GONE. WOW
STILL WRITING SONGS & MORE. LEGENDARY SAXOPHONIST TAKES "SHE'S GONE" TO LOFTY HEIGHTS TO COMPLIMENT VOICES OF HALL & OATES. A SONG FOR THE AGES.
John is soulful as ever!!!
Rock on John Oates...What a great voice, and you brought it on with this great song...love you, Patti

I was always drawn to John and wondered about him. I love them as a duo but I love having the privilege to see John sing and hear his stories about Hall and Oates as I enjoyed Darryl’s House. This was great!
Thank you so much for this. John Oates. Absolute legend
so privalaged to be alive when these talented people share the planet x
So. Cool - Perfection !!!!

Wow. So John Oates is the real deal! I wish he would have displayed more decades ago.

IMAGINE , IF YOU WILL< FOR A MOMENT< AN UNKNOWN< UNPUBLISHED SONG WRITER/NOVELIST EMOTING THESE WORDS, STIMULATED BY "SHES GONE": "TRYIN' TOO HARD"THAT IS A CHAPTER & VERSE OUT OF MY CONTINUING LOVELESS LIFE>
Hi!
What a great artist! That song is timeless as indicated by the smiles on all these professional songwriters' faces! What an incredible validation for John Oates!!!! Love it!
The man, his guitar, his voice....pure simple...wonderful combination!
Type to you later! God Bless!
Jan in VA
It’s great to finally hear just his voice and it’s very nice.😉
I love love love this half of Oates and Hall lol I had a little girl crush into a woman crush from 3 years old until 46 years old now. xoxoox
Great voice
He actually sung the original lead vocal
@nhpm900 ..if you look at the video of "She's Gone" (real funny), or the old live version from 1976, both Hall & Oates had a good shared of the song, but it seemed after that song, Daryl did all the leading and John just background. But they've been together 40 years, so if it dosen't bother them, don't bother me. But it's nice to see John do his own stuff by himself.
What a great voice. You will be sadly missed. RIP John.
God bless the songwriter & their fruitful offerings!
Love to hear the way other songwriters construct their songs and the stories behind them. That's the electricity #MARQUEE #BLOCKSHAREINC #FEMMEFATALE #nyc #womeninmusic
Jhon and Darrel had stood the test of time they both look incredible
I smiled the whole time. i ain't kidding.
IS THAT PHOEBE SNOW ON THE END?
GARFUNKEL AND OATES dragged my here!
Such a great song writer and artist,,,,fantastic 👏 👌
Wow, incredible. I always loved that song and never knew it was Hall & Oates until i saw The Anchorman ! Then I also discovered the drumming was by one of my all time favorites: Bernard Purdie. Great song.
