@@wasatchm good manners I think. If you’re in a partnership then it should be discussed. Perhaps Hall would also have sold and potentially gained a higher overall price. I would be pissed off if I have ran a business for over 40 years only to find out my partner had sold out without me knowing. So moving forward I would think Hall will need to speak about using the music in advert etc for the new partner to realise some profit

Reading through the comments, and I'm remembering what I saw a few years ago from Daryl Hall, and I remember the disappointment I felt seeing him say the things he was saying.
And basically what he was saying, was the same thing John Oates is saying here. That their "brotherhood" is an illusion, their partnership is strictly business. And I remember hearing him say this, and thinking, well that's a shame. I can't point you to the interview in question, but it was years ago.
He was basically saying Hall & Oates is just a corporation now, their personal relationship was almost non-existent.
So NOW I can see why John Oates didn't bother saying anything to him.
Because their friendship has been dead for years. And it's Daryl Hall to my recollection that first started saying this to everyone. Not John Oates.

He didn’t want Hall to know he was thinking of selling. In Oates defense, Hall is well known for being an a-hole, so he probably assumed that Hall would attempt to legally block him from selling. Which is what happened in the end anyway. There really isn’t any reason to not sell. Other than control. Many artists are doing it, once they know their hit making days are long over.

From what I recall, and what I've looked for, Daryl Hall has been saying they're not partners for years. And in any interview discussing Hall & Oates, Daryl Hall makes as much effort as possible to dissuade the public that they're friends, and implores their relationship is strictly business.
And in one interview calls it like it is. OCTOBER 2022
"We’re very different personalities. One of the reasons we became friends is somehow in spite of being opposites we get along. I’m such an aggressive person and he is not. He’s a very passive, laissez-faire kind of guy and it serves him well. I think that perhaps he leads a happier life than mine because of it - certainly a less tempestuous life than I’ve lived, so it’s good for him."
Hall took out a restraining order on a passive, laissez-faire kind of guy, who says in this interview that the partnership was giving him a headache and stressing him out, so he just wanted out of it by selling his portion of it.
The person that turned it into a drama, is the person who has a very tempestuous life.

Contract disputes as joint owners of the publishing for their compositions. In fact such ownership usually includes two parts: writers share and publishers share. Decisions have to be agreed to by BOTH parties. One cannot make an executive decision without the other's yay or nay.
Daryl Hall has been releasing solo music for years, while including his hits with Oates as art of his solo act (during live shows, for example). Some situations may not have been to Oates liking so he was tired of having to iron legal issues with his creative partner. So, he is pushing for a separation and dissolution of the publishing partnership so Hall can keep pursuing his solo work and Oates can focus on his own.
He should have told Daryl; wonder who the "certain third party" was? If it was Hipgnosis, they're pretty much dead in the water and have been bought out by Blackrock affiliated holdings.

Oates is the prick in this scenario. He pulled a passive-aggressive move and it blew up in his face. #1) He COULD have informed Hall of his intention to sell off within a set time frame. A courtesy, but also works unofficially as a right of first refusal. #2) Oates already knew that Primary Wave (the buyer) was detested by Hall as they bought some of their rights 16 years ago and Hall regretted that. So, not just a matter of selling, but selling to "them."

My other posts in this video have gone back a few years where Daryl Hall downplays any friendship these two have, regards their relationship as business, but doesn't even consider them partners.

Daryl himself said the number one reason they broke onto the music scene was John Oates wrote “She’s Gone” on his own, it became a huge hit and their career took off. They both wrote lots of their music. People always want to credit the “main singer”, who was Daryl, but they were co-collaborators on their music. No one rode the coattails of the other and neither of them has ever made that claim.

I saw them in concert a few years back. Oates plugged him new album in the middle of the set and brought down the vibe.

Hall without Oats is like Harold Melvin without the Blue Notes. He will never have another hit. Let the brother John Oates free.

Teddy P sang all those songs, so I think it would be like "Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes without Teddy P." because they sure were nothing (globally-wise) without Teddy.

Good interview by Michael Strahan. He showed respect for John and listened to what he had to say.
