    Well done Charlie, things are taking shape and once your track is laid it will be good to see things running. The station is a project all on its own and I`m still building mine after 6 months !!!

    Hi Charlie. Thanks for mentioning that the foam tack glue is rubberised and therefore doesn't transmit the sound as would pva. Didn't know this before; luckily I have used foam tack glue so far and will continue to do so, despite the extra cost. Cheers, Rick the Bulldog.

    I can't believe that I've never thought about the sound transference of white glue. And yet, I'm a woodworker who makes musical instruments and we use a special white glue which dries very hard specifically to aid in transferring the sound.
    I learn something with every video. Thank you Charlie.

    Nice work and planning out. Great to see the viaduct and all back in place and track lain. I like how you put that beautiful bridge over your underpass and I am thinking "that would look fantastic there, especially with a metallic sheen," and then you say that it is just a mock up and not the one to go there. lol

    Another wonderful video. I have been using both foam and cork roadbed. I also started using the foam safe glue to lay the roadbed and track. The base material for my layout is homesote over 1/2 inch plywood, which is something I used on my 2 previous layouts. I also follow your lead wiring rule of "black to back" as well. Again, great video. Thanks for sharing.

    It is looking good Charley. One thing I can suggest is to scrape the Foam Tack glue very, extremely thin. If you do that, you can peel up the track at a later date without damaging the underlay or the track. Same with the Woodland Scenics Track Bed.

    Hi Charlie. This may sound a silly idea but you might want to take a large sheet of ply outside, using a pencil tied to a piece of string with the other end tied to a convenient post and draw yourself a large ark to match your inside track base. This gives you a base/template for your platform, a nice curve to the inside track and using the '6ft gauge' all the other tracks should follow nicely. Colin.

  • @MrDavil43
    @MrDavil43 4 года назад +1

    I think curved platforms look so good, but as you point out, there is a problem with long vehicles fouling the edges. I have made my main platform a timber trestle one out of balsa. As the material is so soft I can gently scrape/rub away any edges where a coach may touch and repaint as necessary. I wish I'd seen your use of Tracksettas prior to laying my track, it would have saved me a lot of time getting alignments correct. Anyway, another informative video, thanks Charlie.

    Hello Charlie, I am coming from Nebraska in the USA. I just wanted to say that I really enjoy all your videos and I have pick up something off of everyone of them. I am fairly new to the DCC world and you have help clear up many things technical along with giving options on how to set up a lay out. I found your video on rivet counters and keyboard warriors quite amusing. I believe we all would like to have the perfect lay out but to enjoy ourselves is the goal. Myself I find it appalling that someone would demean another persons layout, but there are those that quite cant stand themselves and must be heard. Thank you again for all you do and keep the videos rolling. Good Day!

    Looking good as ever! I'm glad you're moving towards making a complete circuit. Its hard to keep your mojo up when you get bogged down in groundwork.
    Not sure if you've fully committed to glueing down that station track bed yet, but I thought I might share with you just a few points about the transition from the cork section onto the other baseboard.
    Before I packed up, I was an instrument repair tech and worked with cork every day - it's used extensively on the joints of a lot of woodwind instruments. Once it's glued down firmly - say with superglue you can carve it with razor blades, sand it smooth and shape it with sand paper or even work it with a dremmel.
    The process for making a tennon cork on a clarinet would be to cut a strip, sand the end until it tapers to nothing, attach the tapered end with an adhesive, wrap the strip around the joint of the instrument and then overlap cork to cork. This then leaves you with a lump where the cork overlaps that needs to be trimmed with a blade ande then sanded with sandpaper so it's perfectly round and a snug fit in the socket of the other half of the instrument.
    With a bit of patience and time with some sandpaper you can get an absolutely seamless joint with cork.
    If you have a nice large electric sander, if you fit it with some fine sandpaper you could sand that joint flat over a large area to the point that you wouldn't be able to feel it with your finger tips. It's a much more "workable" material than a lot of people give it credit!

    • @ChadwickModelRailway
      @ChadwickModelRailway  4 года назад

      What a fascinating comment. I must admit I hadn’t realised that cork was so malleable.

    Hi Charlie,
    One tip I have if it will help, for any curved platforms I’ve made I used my LMS 12 wheel dining car (my largest item of stock) with a pen on the middle for the inside of the curve to give you a line of clearance and on the out side I put the pen in one of the ends to give you a line.
    I use a felt tip pen gently rested upon the base board or cork depending on where your platform will be placed.
    Plus I wouldn’t worry about the 8 coaches being too long for the platforms and Bath Green Park often had coaches over hang onto the bridges outside the station on the 10-12 coach expresses.
    So dare I say it would be somewhat ‘prototypical’ (please don’t hurt me) for the overhang.
    Anyways great video and a very pleasant watch. Keep up the great work.
    Cheers, Ross.

    Charlie, I like your idea of weathering the track before laying it. I have also decided to make the scenery as a set of dioramas away from the boards (Still not made yet) by using Scram to design my layout I can measure the areas were these dioramas will fit hopefully. I will be using 5mm foam underlay which I can buy in sheets. More work but, cheaper... The only drawback is not having a chamfer on the sides of the foam for the ballast. I was thinking of designing a 3D printed tool to hold two craft knives at a 45-degree angle and use it to cut the strips from the foam sheets. Nice video as always. Martin (Dhaka, Bangladesh.)

    Hello Charlie,
    Watching you videos and having a personal debate on what track to use on my new layout, you have sold me on PECO track. Here in the U.S. there are many of options. It seems Atlas is a high ranking favorite here. My problem with Atlas is the first two ties(sleepers) on each end of every track piece need to be removed and discarded, because they give a very toy look. The track itself is a very good running tack though. Keep the videos coming and "yes" it does give many of use something to look forward to in this crazy time.

I’m very much a novice and only have room for a small layout but I do want to get the signalling to work properly with blocks/sections etc. A friend who has a huge continental layout in a purpose brick built bungalow in the garden tells me it’s best isolate both rails for the block/sections would you agree. Some great progress made Charlie. I can’t wait to get my track put down and painting the track before setting is something I have considered. “Best sprayed outside” “looks into camera mischievous” - love the humour you put in these videos. Your view about having a curved station and not a boring straight one I love. It’s part of the reason why I have torn down my last layout, I wanted some more gentle curves as opposed so straight track. The station with its curves is going to look great when done. Have you got a name for your station? Will it be Chadwick station or something different? Love the progress and the video. All the best, Clint

I’m planning a layout for my retirement years and the station I’m wanting to model is based on a real one which has a curve running through of 22m radius (for HO/OO) and so even though the deviation is 53mm for the length of the 2.5m platform I think it is still worth curving it. I’m also being tempted by 3mm scale to match up with my ex-exhibition layout of the junction up the line from the station. Would make sense if I’m going to have to build rolling stock for it. But I do like the new Peco bullhead turnouts and RTR locos are attractive.
    It does make sense to keep your existing platform and create a new one. Have you considered making it with a wood template, suitably sized (18mm thick I remember being the trick) and then clad with the Peco edging and a topping? Would be very rigid and no warping especially the top..
    Cheers.

    What you have done looks great as always. This was a great video, very informative and conveys your techniques very well. I've heard more negative talk about the black foam roadbed material than good. Most comments are about how its difficulty to work with. Would you give me your thoughts on the foam roadbed material including your likes and dislikes? I also see you have used cork roadbed. Was it only under yard areas or have you used it under the entire trackage. Please explain, if the reason is different than the cork comes in wide pieces; why you only used it under the yards not the entire track, if that is indeed how you did it. Would you also include your likes and dislikes of the cork aswell and why you use foam or why you use it now, if you've changed from cork to foam. I think you are a very accomplished modeler and would like to hear your thoughts on this subject. If you have a video on this subject, please point me toward it. If not and you don't think you would be able to answer thoroughly enough in the comments section maybe that could be a video subject. 🤷‍♂️ Just a suggestion, no expectations. Thanks for any reply you give on this subject. 👍

      Hi William, i’m trying to move away from Cork track bed and to try the woodland scenics foam track bed instead. This is primarily driven by its sound absorption properties. I’m desperately trying to remove the rumble that goes into the baseboards and cork doesn’t appear to stop this. However everything can change once the track that is ballasted.I have bought a rubberised glue to hold the ballast in place and hopefully once complete, the problem should be sorted. Stay tuned.

    Hi Charlie,
    You said in a recent video that you found it difficult to keep the noise down from trains through the board, and you were discussing the merits or otherwise of track pins or gluing to foam or cork. I recently saw a Pecorama RUclips video where they used a fire-retardant baseboard called sundeala, available from sundeala.co.uk. It comes in various sizes, colours, thicknesses etc, but Pecorama recommends it as a model railway baseboard, especially for its noise-reducing qualities. I had never heard of sundeala board before, but if it’s as good as Pecorama claims then it could be worth investigating, well it might be for those of us who haven’t yet invested lots of time and effort and money on other boards! Just thought you’d like to know about it’s whispering trains...
    Jim

      Hi Jim, I believe that Sundeala is dreadful as it warps terribly. It has to be placed on another board to ensure that it remains flat.

    • @jimross623
      @jimross623 4 года назад +1

      Chadwick Model Railway Oh, OK. Is it impractical to use it like you said, with a plywood baseboard then Sundeala on top, if it deadens the extraneous noise so much?
      I notice on RUclips that a model railway baseboard manufacturer uses just that combination in their “luxury” (I.e. most expensive) product. Just search for “Sundeala model railway“ to see that.
      I haven’t yet completed building my layout so I don’t yet appreciate how noisy it will be. If not Sundeala what about gluing several large egg trays underneath the baseboard?

      Jim, there is no "one" answer to this. I'm currently trying foam with a rubberised glue holding the ballast. Stay tuned .....

    Hi Charlie ... thanks for yet another informative and interesting video ... even though I'm not a modeller ... just interested in things "trains".
    Having followed your recommendation to have a look at "McKinley" Railway ... and having "binged" on their videos to bring myself "up to date" there ... as promised ... I'm now doing the same pleasurable experience with your project ... (and very much enjoying the journey!}
    A small suggestion please. ... Would it be possible to numerate your posts? ... That way we can follow the evolution in some sense of order ... thus increasing our pleasureable discovery.
    I now find I have viewed the "almost final" video of the viaduct ... and am now scrambling to catch up on the actual sequence of construction.
    Something "silly" perhaps ... which in no way detracts from your excellent posts.
    Keep safe in these troubled times ... regards, AB

    Hi Charlie, love the videos. Keep up the good work!
    Just a quick query that maybe you or one of your viewers could help with... Is there a reason why plyboard is used so widely? OSB boards seem cheaper, lighter and more ridged, but no-one seem to use them. Do you know of any reasons? Cheers!

    • @ChadwickModelRailway
      @ChadwickModelRailway  4 года назад

      Actually Alan two of my boards are OSB recycled from another layout.
      But to your question, I’ve no idea.

    I used the tracksetta to hold the track while the glue set on a tight corner and I'm thinking it's going to spring out when I ballast 😥

    • @ChadwickModelRailway
      @ChadwickModelRailway  4 года назад

      Perhaps you need to pin down some of the sleepers until the ballast is set, and then remove the pins and fill the tiny holes that are left behind.

    Thanks, Charlie for another informative video. I didn't quite see how you had linked the end of the viaduct with the curved section. Was that section flexible track or did you insert a flexible section? Kind Regards Don
