- Hello everyone, In September 2014 I released a video called 'Total War for Beginners (Shogun 2 Edition). It has helped many people and has become one of my most successful videos on my channel.
I followed this up in January 2015 with a tutorial on Rome 2, again with success. So I have taken the decision for this to become a 'thing' I do, as I show you all the basic mechanics of Total War Games.

Yeah you can't put Rufus on ship
@@firehawk8521 that is so broken. Drives me crazy
Idk why I watched 35 min beginners guide; I’ve been playing for 5 years
😂 Too funny. This comment deserves waay more likes!
i play for for 8 years
I've been playing this game on and off since release lmao, and I'm still learning funny gimmicks. Today I learned you can reverse invade Europe with the Aztecs by gifting them territory

A few things to keep in mind:
-Your General has (usually) a pretty beefy unit you can often risk him to provide morale boosts, hit enemy on flanks, or to beat a weaker unit. For example, a general unit charge can sometimes destroy a unit of low cost spears like militia in one go.
-Missile troops don't work well when bunched up. Try spreading them out for a proper firing arc. If they have to aim high they will suffer in terms of accuracy. Aim for targets that are either dangerous units for you to face head on or to make later fight easier. Cavalry are big walking targets. They can move fast but are easy to hit. A well timed arrow volley can decimate a charge or mess up any unattended cavalry units in the open.
-One of the earliest problems to learn how to counter: Missile Cavalry. DO NOT CHASE THEM. They will just run away while still shooting you. To counter, use foot archers they have typically better range and are more accurate.
-Sword and axe units should be what you use to kill infantry. Axes work well against the heavily armored. Spears to either receive a charge or counter cavalry. Light cavalry to flank an enemy position, hit weaker parts of a line, or run down routing units. Medium Cavalry(heavy cavalry that do not have horse armor) can work most cavalry roles in a pinch and usually shine in melee combat without sacrificing speed too much. Heavy or Shock Cavalry will brutalize an unprepared defender and cause large morale penalties as well as casualties but are slow and need protection. If using pikes remember that guard position works well for them to set up a fortified position.
-Guard position is probably one of the most under utilized options in game. It tells your units to stay in formation at all times, obey all orders given even under duress unless routed(ie if given an order to charge a line they will continue to do so even if they get charged from the side), and also will refuse to chase down enemies who disengage from the fight(running away or luring you out of a defensive position).
-Flanking is probably the easiest way to cause a unit to mass panic and run. if you cant go around the line try softening it with missile fire before striking or place your best units in the area to try to break. In this way one or more of your units has a better chance to get through and hit a neighboring enemy unit in the side.
-As long as public order is at or above 100% there is no chance of rebellion. as long as public order is above 200% rebel armies cannot spawn(although brigands still can). generally rebels have professional units and brigands do not.
-build economy buildings first if able. This will mean better support of multiple armies, meaning easier campaigns.
-ROADS are hugely important they allow much faster travel between cities, provide growth from trade, and money from trade.
-Mercenaries should really only be used for a major battle or war with one nation then disbanded so they don't eat up your finances.
-utilizing special ammo abilities costs extra ammo per shot to compensate with lower rate of fire and extra status effects.
-Don't neglect the papacy if you don't get into the cardinal promotion game you will find yourself on the receiving end of a 6 nation coalition to end you.
-Your decisions on the campaign map and the battlefield will shape your generals. Chasing down the fleeing army, Exterminating a settlement, and crushing an army significantly smaller then you (10+ units) will certainly cause an increase in dread. occupying a town, ending a battle without chasing down enemies, releasing captives, and crusades will cause an increase in chivalry.
-Chivalry is good for defense and best city growth and dread is good for attack and best for public order.
-Inquisitions will target any and all generals and units in sight they will try to denounce your men and will cause public order issues until you eliminate heretics completely in the area and nearby areas. so spam priests to try to get rid of the inquisition or make assassins.
-always examine menus and information buttons and such to find more options available (including moving your capital which is hugely important late game.)
hi14993 Great, thanks for writing this.
hi can you please write a part2 to this haha very informative.
The reason why I go to this video. Keep it up
Good job

Glad I found this tutorial. After the in game one bugged out on me I was feeling more than a but lost. This has cleared things up greatly.
No worries, I'm glad you found it useful :)
Happened to me too
I’m only just starting this game now in 2020 and this vid helps a bunch! Cheers buddy
Great, glad you found this video helpful.
Thanks dude. I try to reply to most when possible, even if its a like of a comment to show I've acknowledged it.
Lord Gruffyd of Wales, I require of you a levy of 2000 longbowmen, we are to invade Normandy.
Another tip: Try to be smart what type of settlement you really need. You have two types of settlements: Towns and castles. Towns generally generate more income, but don´t have the facilities to train strong units. Castles can train stronger units, but generate lower income. I think you generally want more towns, especially as your empire grows. You can build castles closer to the frontlines to be able to quickly build and move stronger units to the battlefield and protect your empire.
I know this video is semi-old but thank you for uploading! This got me back into this game after a long break.
No problem my friend, I'm glad it got you back into it :)
Me watching this in 2024
Hi im from 2065. The world has ended but i am about to start this game - your video has really helped
Damn, i was about to give up on the game because i didn't know how to do anything, but you cleared things up. Thanks :)
No problem, glad it was useful :)
hey I understand you've stopped making videos but I still hope you know just how appreciated these guide videos are, and that you should at least be proud of these ones if none of the others.
Hey thank you for the kind comment, I appreciate it. I am very proud of these videos and glad many people seem to have found them useful or in some way helpful/enjoyable. Unfortunately as I got older many things changed and the desire to make videos diminished as I am in a very different place to where I was when I first started the channel (I go into more detail of this in my final video)
Thanks again for the comment, I hope you are well, take care 🙂 DH
Thank you for this tutorial, like many others the in-game one bugged out on me and although there are workarounds to continue it, there's a lot more wisdom to be acquired here.
No problem, glad you found it useful :)
So I bought the definitive version of this game last week, messed about with it for half a week, read tiny bits and bobs about it and realised very quickly I haven't a clue. Looking forward to this set of videos, and it also helps that it's being narrated in a Welsh accent. Love the Welsh from an Irish brother!
LOL I remember playing this like 10 years ago and played the campaign and had no idea what the hell the campaign map was. Then it took me a whole month of playing to find out I was playing in Europe
maybe a little of
geography and elementary school may help with that
you are just stupid
Thanks for this. Rufus won't get on the goddamn boat.
no problem, glad you found it useful :)
I had the same problem, the tutorial on the game seems to be bugging out for everyone lately. So thanks for this video! Us new players need it
haha, that's exactly what made me stop playing for a while. tried for 20 minutes straight trying to get the bugger on the boat, and i eventually decided it was a pointless cause.
Move the boat around until you run out of turns.. then manually End Turn. Just did it this afternoon, worked for me :)
HOLE SHEET! I hate this foker! I was like...this game is too hard, what am I doing wrong ?!!? haha
Oh thank god, this game was hurting my brain, i didn't know why I lost that much florins and it was because some cities were in automatic. Thanks a lot man.
I hate automatic
Thank you so much for this, I've only played Rome total war before this, so the aspects of religion and castles made it very confusing
8 years later and this video is still useful
Immense respect boss❤ nice video
No problem, thank you for the kind comment :)
After all these years, this guide is still amazing. great job friend
Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it. I'm glad that people still find these useful.
Awesome video. I was struggling on figuring out what to do after the in-game tutorial. This helped out a bunch. Much appreciate he upload.
Glad I could help! Thank you

Just make the ship he is supposed to get on and can't move back and for a couple spaces until it ends the turn. Then you can load him on the ship.
@@TheRealBrotherLance why thank you for the bug fix but sadly it was too late. I became a pro at medieval2 total war. Still, this will help others. So thank you.
@@ivanthehighman177 most welcome. I'm just starting. How do you get the troops to move in perfect formation. I great theses awesome set up but it all turns to melted butter. Thanks

Hi, I found your video usefully, but I am looking for a intermediate tutorial adressing the agents, what to do with merchants in particular and Cardinals or priest. Diplomat and spy are pretty straight forward. Also do you have more advanced tips on strategical regions to hold for ressources ?
Thank you.
Marc-André Verreault the priest and cardinals make more catholic influence in there sight
Just got the mobile version. Tnx for this.
Thank you for the video! Dig the accent too
Cheers, appreciate it :)
This is fantastic.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it.
Thanks for this tutorial, it helped me a lot to understand how to play the game ;)
No worries, glad you found it helpful :)
How to grow and build fleet army i am in fight with roman and they always hit my fleets and i losse how i can make them more then 50 men
Very informative, many thanks.
Thank you, glad you found it useful :)
needed this great video
Very helpful - Thanks.
awesome sauce
Thanks :)
Super helpful, thanks a bunch.
No worries, glad you liked it :)
I got this on mobile and it seems to be a direct port more or less. I thought i was pretty conservative with my coin on turn 1 but went into debt pretty quick 😂. Once i took York and Raennes it started to balance out some though.
One thing though, on my map there are no settlements west of Nottingham. Ive walked my king and a guard all over those provinces, up and down, and theres nothing for me to take.
Oh snap maybe i need the expansion. At $7 it seems like a good deal to me anyway
So how do get "inns" building to recruit assassins i have been trouble trying to figure it out.
Awesome video thank you for uploading!
No problem :)
Thank you for this
No problem, glad you found it useful :)
So after a battle do troops automatically replenish?
Helped a lot thank you
Thanks!
No problem :)
I still have no idea how do you get better units, like how do you get better technology
God I suck at this game but this video helped, only have a few hours in. It looks like you've played most of the TW games, which one would you say is the most fun once you got the hang of it?
Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it :). Yes I have played them all, my favourite is Shogun 2, I feel like it's one of the more challenging games, while also looking stunning graphically (even for a game now 8 years old).
Hi, which windows are u using to play this game bro. Love ur gameplay bro
I'm new to total war and want to know if I should start with medieval 2, Rome, or the first medieval

where's the blood? I watch cinematic vids on utube of battles and they have blood and you see the fighter ramming swords etc into each other and theres blood but i just bought this game and had the tutorial battle and didn't see any blood.

Is there a way to fix pikemen to make them useing only pikes and not switching to swords? Also xan anyone give me some tips how to use French Voulgiers?
My problem is that if I want to select multiple units I have to press the control key and select the units, but when I do that nothing happens and I have to use the shift key is there something wrong? Or is it because I use a Mac?
Subbed to you 3 seconds in
Leaf Salad Read your comment, came in 5 seconds. 10/10 would come again :
Thanks, appreciate it :)
Keep making content :D
does anyone else have a glitch in the tutorial that doesent allow rufus to board the ship??
yeah the tutorial is bugged, you have to edit the game files to continue
how do you use the cinematic camera ? its usually 'k' in the new games but cant figure it out on this one
Idk why but I can’t find the button to leave a quick battle
tried playing this but on campagin mode using the wasd the camera would pan too fast n was too annoying to try to play
I understand this is old but if by any chance you can help me with the Reputaion bug , i sadly havnt found a proper way to fix or where to place the file that fixes that bug where everyone hates you even if you are always a very "chivalrus" player .
On V Hard difficulty does the game boost enemy unit stats? Does it impose friendly unit stat penalties? The game doesn't really explain battle difficulty, although I've only ever played as England on V Hard/V Hard - just wondering, appreciate any info cheers!
Difficulty determines your starting cash, AI more aggressive to u
how do you put up settle ments in the custom battle
I'm just wondering how marriages work? Seems like the 3rd generation barely gets brides and so on from their. Unless using benefactors help in such a way? I'm not too sure
Dunno if your still interested but I've heard princess are rather rare in general
hello fellow Welshmen
Hello friend
Thus is Great especially since the totorial is bugged
Thank you, glad you found this useful.
I don't get the option to position troops before battle.. is there something I'm missing?
This is gonna sound dumb, but I never understood how Priests work. The game doesn't provide enough information. I don't understand how they work.
@Lone Gunman20 yeeeh, and it says they can convert. But how?
I love your welsh accent
My money gets negative often
Tips for money;
1) Disbanding units - You have to be willing to frequently disband units, that's the secret. You need to plan your initial expansion carefully and quickly. You want to burn up your starting units on taking cities, and any that are too far from the action should be immediately disbanded. You can leave only 1 garrison unit per settlement, you can get away with that for a while. You cannot afford to pay for units to go on Gulliver's travels, forget it, disband them and build new units closer to where they are needed. You should also immediately disband any starting ships - you can do without ships for a while. Sometimes you are awarded units for completing missions, i usually immediately disband them!
2) Converting castles to cities - Also you usually do well converting castles to cities. You only need two or three castles over all.
3) The other important thing for money is actually the town garrison buildings up to level 2 at least, level 3 is ideal - they allow you to have more free upkeep units in the city and improve growth!
4) Crusades - you should always be on the lookout to initiate a crusade whenever possible. Armies on crusade charge no upkeep! Also you can use the crusade to improve the chivalry of all your generals (except dread ones). When you are ready to take the crusade city, the same turn join all your chivalry generals before you do!
5) Diplomats - get diplomats going in all directions as early in the game as possible, you want those trade rights agreements! Alliances are easier to form early on in the game too.
6) Watch towers - build watch towers adjacent to roads where you need line of sight but never 'on' a road. Any bandit armies will be drawn off the road to the watchtower thus preventing the bandits from stopping your trade along that road until such time as you can have an army available to take it out - or keep it to train your assassins (you will need assassins, like it or not). Remember, never use a chivalry general to attack rebels because they will be demoted - always use dread generals to attack rebels or separate the chivalry general from the army and have them as reinforcement.
7) Most of the early game you pretty much only want 1 attacking force. Occasionally raising a second force for emergencies and then disbanding it. Generally speaking, the money in this game only allows 1 attacking force in the early game, and possibly right through to mid game.
Clancy Long 😁thanks i understand. I always miss crusade because of long distance to travel..
Only the first one, then once you have a foothold in the middle east, every crusade after that can be quick. The sooner you complete a crusade, the sooner the next one will become available. Also make sure you use a young commander on your first crusade, otherwise you may well lose your middle east conquest if you used an older commander who subsequently died. (thats happened to me a few times) Because you cannot control the moral in a far away city without a strong leader in it.... (A young low ranking commander gets lots of chivalry from winning a crusade, so he can then hold the city)
Clancy Long oho thank u bro..i'll follow 😊
good luck. These past few weeks i have been doing the grand campaign with Hungary. I got about 35 provinces plus Jerusalem now stopped expanding since i dont want to win before Tumirids come which should not be too far off now. I am going to hit the Tumirids with a full horse archer army and full heavy cavalry AI reinforcements (AI controlled reinforcements not so good with horse archers). I am only using Hungary because i did not use them before - otherwise the best country to use is France.
How do you select more than one troop at once
Daniel Robinson thanks man
What do i do with extra Generals that i don't need to fight, I've had three get a negative trait in loyalty because i wasn't using them. Should i join them with another army and have two generals in one army ? i just thought it would be better to keep them in a settle meant and wait until an opportunity arises
TylerThaGamer put them in towns
the best game in the world like call of duty to me

is there a way to change the heir of the faction?
How do you stack units? Ive seen people that have 120 spearman in one whole unit.
You can change size of units in settings
2:41 Artillery Only you say?
Wait, did you say if you conquer other nations then more factions become available?
Yes all the other nations are available after you destroy them in a compaign, except mongols, rebels, the pope and timurids
Alot of the campaign intros are different
Is it possible to rotate the camera (not using the borders)
And is Poland or Hungary playable?
They're both playable. Actually, if you go in your steam files you can edit a file to give you all the factions available, excluding the Papal States, The Mongols and the Rebels. If you want I can tell you how, or you can just search "How to unlock all factions in Medieval II Total War" and the first result should tell you how. Hope I could help!
