Really great video mate!! I had never actually seen this game played (like you, Rare going to Xbox was kind of a wedge between my enjoyment of their games...) so thanks for showcasing it!
[Try4ce] I'm now wondering if Rare's perceived demise is actually all that accurate, or just a reflection of the frustration of them changing companies. With enough time for the wound to have healed, now might be the best time to give these games their fair shake.
***** Personally, when I say their Xbox exclusivity drove a wedge, it wasn't because I chose to boycott them or something, but more just a logistical thing (i.e. i didnt' own an Xbox at that time). I'm sure this happened to many others too. I'm looking forward to their Replay collection coming out anyway!!
When my friends ask why I care about box art design so much, this game is why. When I first saw this game as a kid, I thought it was a bad budget title and never bothered to buy it. Now as an adult, I'm curious if I might like it
Hey guys, great episode! Rise to Honor (PS2) was a game that had the dual analog stick brawler battle system. Was a very interesting, though not great, game with Jet Li as the main character.
SoulEdgeSlayer963 What he said. Has some shooting elements, but this is one of the only chances you get to brawl as one of the biggest martial artists in the world.
SoulEdgeSlayer963 Stole my idea! But yeah Rise to Honor is exactly like that. I wouldn't say it's amazing but it does have nice production values. It did come around 2004, but I doubt it was inspired since it came out around 4 mounts or so, meaning maybe they were in development around the same time.
You know...My son (he's four) watches sometimes with me somę youtube shows. MLIN is especially pleasant to him - probably because excellent music and how they speak and sound...He's only 4, doesn't understand english (maybe only a little) and whenever i watch MLIG he always sits by me and we watch it togheter.

Rise to Honor starring Jet Li uses a VERY similar control scheme. All of the fighting is done with the right stick in that game. It's very fun and can usually be bought for about $2.
I only recently picked up a Xbox One a few weeks ago, and you bet I nabbed Rare Replay with it. I actually have also been looking for a good goofy/creepy Halloween game to play lately, something more in line with Costume Quest than Silent Hill. It never occurred to me to actually play through Grabbed by the Ghoulies until I stumbled upon this video now, but I totally think I will! Thanks for giving this some attention, uh, 4 years ago :P Oh well; better late to the party (for me) than never. Btw, Jet Li's Rise to Honor and that Tekken beat'em up "Death by Degrees" (starring Nina Williams) are also games that use dual analog combat systems. Never played DbD, but I remember Jet Li's game to be pretty fun once you got used to it. Haven't looked at the rest of your channel yet to see if you reviewed them already, but I'm just throwing 'em out there in case :)
Holy crap, I remember seeing this demo inside a Target or Walmart and all I could remember from it to this day was the Ball Room with the dancing Zombies and Skeletons and the Grim Reaper coming after the player. Glad I finally know what I was playing all those years ago, and a Rare title at that!
Never cared to play this game until seeing this video. I decided to try it for myself last night and goddamn is it so much fun. Does it have the polish of previous rare games? No but it still feels very much like a classic rare game in how much fun it is and the overall art design. Thanks for finally getting me to check this out
Michał Marek [Coury] Love to hear stuff like this. We generally try to avoid covering games that have been done to death (though if we do, we try to do it differently if we can). So it makes us happy when we put out a video on a game that people feel is under appreciated - or unfairly judged, such as this one.
I absolutely loved this game. I think it didn’t sell well because this was during a time that first person shooters became the craze and Grabbed by the Ghoulies was considered “kiddish.” The trailers for the game didn’t help. I remember showing my brother a new Rare game I was excited for. I showed him the trailers and he said “what’s with all the monsters dancing?” It didn’t appeal to many who loved the Rare games from the SNES or the N64. That generation was growing up and Rare was making games that were looked at as too young for them. Had more people tried Grabbed by the Ghoulies, they would have found the game to be fun, entertaining, and challenging at the same time. I wish more people would have given this game a chance. I think they would have ended up loving it like I did. There was a planned sequel that was canceled. I doubt it’ll ever be made now.
Good stuff. I remember telling my father in law to buy this game because "its rare!" And then seeing it and being super disappointed. However, years later he would still play it with his granddaughter and have a great time. So all in all it ended up being a really good game.
I remember playing this game when I was 7 and it was fun. However those spiders and witches freaked me the hell out. I'm surprised that not many know about this game. They sadly missed out.
Is there a way to buy/download full version of MLIG Themę somewhere. It's so amazing that it haunts me all the time. Damn, sometimes i watch beginning of yours show just to listen to that tune...
[Try4ce] Yeah that's really got me debating between choosing a 360 or an Xbox One. Depends on if the Sakaguchi RPGs get backwards compatibility. Though Jet Force Gemini could be worth it alone if they fix the framerate and modernize the controls.
Hopefully the 360 compatibility on the One is much better than the original Xbox on the 360. It's still software driven though so I have concerns. Only proper way to do it IMO is put the actual chips inside the the console to begin with.
RMGB TV Well, it's half and half from my experience. I tested it out with some games. Banjo Kazooie works ok, so did Kameo, but I played N+ on it, a game that usually runs super smooth with 60fps, but it was chugging at roughly 15fps. So, I think we might have something along the lines of the 360 to Original Xbox emulation system.
In the UK, Grabbed by the Ghoulies takes on a whole different meaning.. which I think was Rare's intention, throw in a little innuendo that the rest of the world won't get..
Twin stick brawler... as a fan of beat em ups and tight fighting controls I'm glad you mentioned this at the beginning of your retrospective, definitely passing on this one.
[Try4ce] I really hope there's a chance that Yooka-Laylee gets a physical release! The physical copy Kickstarter tier trend started just after it got funded. I'm also interested in A Hat in Time, which is inspired by that era of platformers, and has music from Grant Kirkhope.
I remember the gaming magazines giving this a terrible review when it was first released, and it made me feel okay not having an original Xbox. I, too, got mine recently, only about a year ago, because I became aware of how many great exclusives and superior ports for it are currently very cheap. Try, Coury, did you know there's a great trick built into the Xbox? If you have the system set to at least 480p, and it's connected with component cables, when you're at the Xbox dashboard, click down the two analog sticks while holding down the L and R triggers. It will force the Xbox to output 480p as the default output. Got games that didn't have progressive scan? This fixes that issue. I myself only have one Xbox game that was 480i only, and this trick worked perfectly for it.
***** Having tried it on Star Wars Republic Commando (the one 480i game I mentioned), I couldn't find a difference in input, and that game is a first person shooter, so input lag would probably be easy to feel.
I was a bit hesitant to play Grabbed by the Ghoulies when I got Rare Replay (Really there to play Banjo-Kazooie, Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, classic Battletoads and OG Perfect Dark) via Game Pass on my Series X and especially since Microsoft took away Donkey Kong Racing, Kameo and Banjo-Theerie from GameCube and to add insult to injury, censored Conker Live & Reloaded's fowl language and ruined Banjo-Kazooie with Nuts and Bolts. Turns out Grabbed by the Ghoulies is a hidden gem and so is Kameo for the 360. Honestly it shows that there can be good with Microsoft owning Rare. The examples being that you get some classics backwards compatible and for some in 4K like Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark and so on. The best place to play this game is obviously Series X because it's in higher resolution and all those frame drops are all gone. If you guys ever to revisit this game then Series X should be the only option.
I remember hating on this game as a Salty Nintendo fanboy after microsoft bought out Rareware. Just recently picked up a copy as part of collecting Rareware games.
