  • How far does each golf club go for a mid handicapper? I hit my 13 clubs 5 times each and calculate the average carry distance. Everyone is different but here are the distances for one average player. When I left off in the fall my hcp was 13. With a lot of practice in the simulator over the winter I hope to improve this season but time will tell. One more step in the Golf Quest.

    Very Cool! Thanks for sharing. What is exciting about this for you is - you have identified a gapping issue. You have an opportunity to eliminate some clubs from your bag - and maybe add some others. 5 Wood over 3 Wood comes to mind - and you may be able to take out your six and 4 iron - and add another hybrid - or....add a couple wedges to close the gaps at the lower end of your bag. You have a lot of great opportunities to lower your scores with a different club configuration - that is actually GREAT news!

    I am 64 yrs old and playing off a 13 as well. My driver carry is 220Yd, 5 wood 165 Yd, 7 iron 138 Yd, Pw 100 Yd. The shorter carry is made up with a lower dispersion and in particular my wedges are fairly spot on. Working on increasing my swing speed and attack angle to get another 20 yds from my driver. I think I can bring my handicap down to 10 if I succeed.

I've ditched the 3W for a 5W, added a 7W (awesome club), ditched the 5i (not fast enough clubhead speed to make it work) and added a 4Hyb (21°). A few things, may want to consider, first off you need to get with an experienced fitter because you have some gapping issues in your bag. First change possibly a 4 or 5 wood to replace your 3 wood. Unless you’re swinging over 100mph and make good contact most AMs just can’t hit a 3 wood effectively. But you need something to hit closer to 210-215 and id about bet you’d crush a 5wd 15-20 yards further than the 3 wood because you’re just not getting launch and ball speed out of the 3. Between your 3hy, 4i, and 5i you have 3 clubs that go nearly the same distance. A 4hy or 7 wood to replace the 4 iron might be helpful. You have a similar problem with your 6 and 7 iron and with your PW and Gap Wedge. It appears you have an older, possible 2nd hand set of irons. May need to get your lofts nand lies checked to make sure the gapping is good on the irons you do keep. If those two wedges are in spec you may want to go to a higher lofted gap wedge. Again a competent fitter can help you out. I’d do a few more gapping sessions. But right now you could pull 2-3 clubs from the bag and simplify your life lol (3H-4i-5i) pick one lose the other 2, consider one replacement for the 4/5, possibly a hybrid or a 7 wood.

      Wow lots to digest here. Thank you for sharing. My irons were new when I bought them. I had intentions of getting a new set and perhaps getting properly fitted last summer but then ended up putting the simulator in the garage instead which kiboshed the new irons. I will definitely consider a 5w. I hit the three wood pretty decently off the tee but it would be good to have something longer to hit off the deck. Thanks for watching and commenting - it is appreciated :)

    • @tcofield1967
      @tcofield1967 2 года назад

      I was thinking the same thing. His long irons/hybrid/3 wood were too close in distance. He hits his 5I to 3W were way to close in distances and his seven iron is too long compared to his 8 and the distance between the 6 and 7 was too narrow. These are older irons and probably have had some use which might explain some of the issues. I'm no expert but I have been told you should shoot for a 10-15 yard difference between clubs, especially the irons. There are a lot of 150 to 160 yard par 3s that will be difficult with that major difference in distance. Then again, these are distances on a simulator, in a controlled environment. Your results may vary in the real world.

    I was pretty much where you were last year in that I tended to have my distances bunch up at the top of the bag. I redid my bag, not the cheapest thing to do in the world, but ultimately ended up 52-56-60 wedges. 8-P in a small “player’s iron” type head. 5-7 hybrids. 3-7-9 woods. And of course driver and putter. This gave me consistent gapping and “precision” at the bottom of the bag and “forgiveness” at the top and most importantly, a nice 14-15 yard gap between all my clubs. This has resulted in a drastic increase in GIR and a handicap drop from 15 to 6. I also chip with an 8 or 9 iron, so that’s the reason for the style of club I picked.

    I have two sets of clubs that I play (an original set of ADAMS Tight-Lies and a new set of Tommy Armour 845 Max), and the Lofts and distance are different on both. I would not consider myself a “long ball” hitter, or a “PGA Tour” player. All I did was change to a set of clubs that had a different loft.

    First I woukd like to hear how accurate you feel the simulator is vs reality on the course or an driving range with good golf balls. Secondly, I’m a bit surprised over the lack of distance on your longer clubs with the swing you have. Your lower irons indicates longer distance vs an average golfer like me but then on I4(that I don’t use), H3 (that I use, I would equal you) and you 3W should be 220 at and your driver should be somewhat 10-15y longer as well up to 240-245. Your clubs, or your swing? Or the simulator.

      @@GolfQuestChannel It looks like you have plenty of speed to score well. I’m not a “long” hitter by any means, but I hit it far enough to score. Shot even par 72, and 1 under 71 my last 2 rounds. I’ve learned to predict my ball flight(shape, and yardage), strike it consistently, and chip n putt good. Distance is fun, but not near as important as ANY of those other things, when it comes to scoring. It’s really all according to what you want out of the game. I play with some guys that only worry about how far they hit that “one” drive, or how far they just hit that “one” 6 iron. That’s what makes them happy I guess. I like to SCORE. To each his own….. If you’re the type that wants to score, my advice would be to start purposely trying to make every putt inside of 30 feet. Too many people are just nonchalantly 2-putting every time they get on the green. Putting is the easiest stroke in the game BY FAR. Take advantage of that easy task, and make more 1-putts. @@GolfQuestChannel Thank you. I’m 49 years old, and I’ve experimented with EVERYTHING the last 30 years. Here’s my routine for putting. You may be able to take something from it. First, I read the green from both sides of the hole, until I’m 100% committed to my read. Never putt with an ounce of doubt about your read. Second, I take practice swings until I have the speed nailed down, imagining that stroke, and how far it will make the ball roll. I then forget about “speed” and just purposely repeat that same exact stroke for distance. And third is the MOST IMPORTANT. I have one task, and one task only. I pick a spot about 6” in front of my ball, and focus purely on starting the ball on that line(or spot). I don’t watch the putter head go back n forth, or think about mechanics, or technique. I also don’t worry about the outcome, of missing it, or making it. They all won’t go in. However, if you 100% commit to the task at hand, you’ll be surprised at how many that DO go in. I had 8 one-putts Sunday. 5 for par, and 3 for birdie. Putting is easy, if you don’t complicate it. Hope this helps, man….

    If you look at the yardage charts you showed at the beginning you'll see you hit your shorter Irons further than the chart (even further than the long hitter column) and then that shoves too many of your mid-higher irons into too narrow a gap becuase you dont hit your high irons and woods proportionately the same..
    It would be better to fit your low to mid irons for better gaps where you could hit defined yardages between clubs when you hit onto the green. If you get on the green with more clearly gapped iron shots, putts to the pin get much easier and closer.
    IOW, You have a 20 yard gap in your 8 to 7 iron and only 4 between 7 and 6. You have 17 yards between PW and 9 and its pretty close with your other wedges too. Its better to be able to hit your clubs 90% all the time rather than having to finesse a 73% shot to come up with the right distance on a club with too large a gap.
    A better structure would be;

    Driver 231 Driver 240
    3 Wood 193 3 Wood HL 16.5* 224
    3 Hybrid 186 7 Wood 21* 212

It gives you lots of practice features in the Skytrak app and then also allows you to add on other simulation software such as e6 connect or the the golf club to play full courses (for an additional fee - without the game improvement plan you cannot do this). When I first got the Skytrak I knew I was going to get E6 connect to play with friends but I thought I would spend most of my time on the range. Turns out the opposite is true. I enjoy the "playing" practice of the course. I still use the range for sure usually before each round to warm up a bit but being able to play multiple courses helps. Hope that info helps.

    same club speed with 9-iron and 4-iron? Sounds strange.....

      Skytrak doesn’t directly measure clubhead speed rather it projects it based on ball speed / launch data. That probably still doesn’t explain much but it’s all I’ve got.

    Nice setup... if you get a higher lofted driver I would guarantee you would drive it over 300 easily.

      Although I would love this to be true I have my doubts. I only typically get ball speeds of 145 on my best strikes. I don't think that is enough. You think I'm launching too low? Or do you think it would help with the spin? I feel like I have much too high backspin numbers on the average drive.

    Do not understand how you could be a 13 handicap with those distances. Seems like you should be a 6.

      Driving control is awful. Pretty terrible putter. Good news is I feel like I've turned a corner a bit on both of the above recently. Last two rounds in the 70s (first time I've ever gone back to back rounds in the 70s) so maybe I can claw away at the hcp a bit. I've had it as low as a 10.3. Currently sitting at 12.1 after a pretty mediocre summer but hopefully finish with a strong fall!

      @@GolfQuestChannelcan not get that you’re not a single. I was down to 8.4 at my peak with much worse distances. Now I’m fairly accurate on my drive but always been a short hitter. I ran I6 on 145y and my drive maybe was 220y so I carried h3 and h4 (still do) and had to use them… quite a lot even more nowadays. Today I’m maybe an 90-94 player rather trying to be low 80, time passes.

    What a question…yes that’s the trouble, a 13 has no idea how far ball flys with any club.

    I would drop the loft on your 7 by a couple of degrees if this data is reproducible. Maybe also drop the lift of your 5 by a degree and not carry the 4 iron. Maybe then carry a 64 degree if your courses warrant it.

      Not entirely sure where you are going with this but here is some food for thought: At least one study found that 55% of golfers break 100 according to this article (which has some other interesting data in it as well): www.golfspan.com/percentage-golfers-break-100

    A few points to make buddy. 1/ You appeared to hit every shot full out and it showed in your dispersion, some left, some right and some just out the park wayward. Good golf isn’t played by trying to blast every ball off the planet. 2/ You do realise that the numbers you achieve indoors on one of these trackers doesn’t really represent what you achieve on the course. There’s wind, rain, heavy atmosphere, gradients and different lies to assess. 3/ You rarely, if never get a chance to play two shots in a row with the same club.
    It’s good that you are practicing, but distance isn’t everything, knowing how far you carry and the ability to land your ball in a certain target circumference is critical. To get that mid handicap down maybe you should be trying a 75% / 80% power swing and concentrate on your accuracy. It really doesn’t matter if you are 10 yards back from a 100% swing, at least you will have a much better chance of being in the middle of the fairway or on the green.
    Have a look at the distances the LPGA players hit the ball, and they are all scratch golfers!!
    For reference my handicap index is currently 3.6 My 7 iron carries 153yds. My driver carries (winter) 228yds (summer) 239yds

      Thanks for watching and the comment. I would just like to point out that I agree with most of what you said and I don't think I did or said anything in the video to suggest otherwise. Obviously wind, rain, elevation, lie etc effect distances. You still should know how far you hit it. Also, the way I swing in the video is pretty much how I swing on the course. I wasn't trying to blast it off the planet though lol. I was swinging my normal swing. All the best to you out on the course.

      @@GolfQuestChannel fair comment. My suggestions were based mainly on the dispersion you were getting, especially with your longer irons/clubs which is a sure sign of trying to hit too hard. Keep practicing buddy, all the best.
