But hey, insulting someone and then starting to play Enter Sandman is such a power move.
That's why I like the game Marauders rn. Trash talking? Totally allowed. Battlebit? Allowed. Just no slurs in either of them and that makes sense to me. That's a good standard while still letting people verbally eviscerate one another.

Trash talk has to be the funniest interactions i've had with people online. Easily Cod is #1 for it with proximity chat and kill recordings. If there is a slur I'm pretty sure i've been called all of them. Heck I hear new slurs I didnt even expect to hear, being called a Rat is great. I love cheese and putting a shotgun in someones back.

Trash talk honestly is a lost art. Back in my league days when playing with a group of friends when it gets heated at times i always pulled the card "Says the one that loses to a Bronzie" which really tilted them at times as i liked playing shit like Fizz and yes i was Bronze, but we always had the champions randomized that way we would never get our mains as often and steamroll the opponent. Still i always got to play as the annoying champions, there was this one time where it was a 5v1 on the aram map and the Diamond player got to use his main Mordekaiser and my team was only losing as he stole my Singed ghost as i know how to build annoying ass bullshit and they said "Johnny we are only losing because he keeps stealing your ghost" and my reply was "I told you Singed was good"
We eventually won that game as they were like "Fuck it, protect the Singed" as really Singed can not do anything but run at people and fling them and while he is running at or past people he leaves behind a poison trail and kills people as it does stack melt fast with the build i had back in season 6. My team did not appreciate Singed being one of my most played at the time but the Morde said "I appreciate you" and i said "See he appreciates me" and one friend said "You're Singed, of course he appreciates you as you are the reason why he keeps killing us and is turning this game around" and i said "Sounds like someone is salty for dying to a shit champion controlled by a Bronzie not knowing how to build" they usually can't come back from that
Good times and yes it was all in good fun. They even acknowledge i am a terror if i am on my Main, Pantheon, especially if i was playing support as it makes it easy for the ADC to get the kill thus we actually snowball the fucking game. I also had fun playing Soraka Top as seeing the enemy seeth in all chat from dying in a 1v1 to me and or not being able to kill me and or my team is pretty fucking hilarious, I also do taunt them a lot with flashing mastery emote after a failed attempt or killing them to the point i tell my jungle in team chat "Yeah he's tilted, free kill" thus we camp and tilt the enemy top laner into disconnecting
1 rule I keep for trashtalking is to insult people's actions, never the person themself, and keep it funny, laugh at good insults your 'opponent' makes.
I had plenty of shouting trashtalking matches and then get friend requests after, good ol' days.

One time in 3rd grade the kickballs team I was on was insanely worse than the other team, like legit no contest we would lose. So, I had the brilliant idea to have my entire team start healing and complaining about how bad we were and have everyone hardly try to play, such as slowly dragging our feet over to the ball after the other team kicked, never catching the ball etc., and it worked so well, the other team was yelling at us to stop and we’re getting mad. We still lost by a long shot but it was the funniest shit because we were doing the opposite of trash talking and still got them mad.

I grew up with Cod Lobby and Halo lobby trash talking, I was also bullied irl up until high school. My stance on "safe spaces" is this: they're for cowards that are too afraid to stand up for themselves so they want people in power to stand up for them. Grow a spine and some thick skin peeps. You will feel better when you are able to stand up for yourself.
Trash talk was real good back in the Xbox 360 modern warfare days, every other word was a slur or a string of slurs by so many people yelling on top of each other.
I find it funny cause trash talking can be such a useful tool, I learned when Tekken 7 came out my skill lvl sucks vs my friends cause they are just better but I learned when we shit talk I build up that semi anger and realized I weaponize it and beat my friends and when they learned that it was so funny they tried to avoid topics that fire me up cause I know I'll smack em to next week 😂

I rarely ever trash talked online (not counting tea bagging, and not counting banter among my friends), but man I miss listening to it in online games. Sometimes I sometimes see some trash talk in the MCC text chat, but that's about it. I think the funniest thing about gaming companies cracking down on trash talking and teabagging is that most of the games they're doing this with are fucking M-rated. Like blood, guts, murder, characters in-game swearing, sexual content, etc., that's all fine, but saying some no-no words and crouching over a dead body? Banned! Can't have any of that in my clean and wholesome video game about shooting and killing people or whatever.
I played Overwatch without my friends for the first time ever a few weeks ago (I play a support role cause I don't really enjoy competitive multiplayer normally).
I somehow got a higher kill and heal score than everyone else on the team, though we still lost the game. I couldn't refrain from cutting into them arguing over who's fault it was to ask "How am I doing better than the rest of you when I absolutely suck?"

See that’s what I find funny because Team Fortress 2 literally has a mechanic to show someone is just railing you in game and even has taunts and a freeze frame cam to insult you for dying even further. And yet it is one of the nicest communities in the gaming industry
I used to be one of those trash talkers back in BO1. Getting too old to bother trash talking these days, and barely anyone has open mics these days in game lobbies.
33:00 for the longest time I couldn't for the life of me understand what gave people a shock about what the dude said, and I assumed it was some word I couldn't hear, since I had a hard time understanding what he said at all.
Turns out, I DID hear what he said, i just had to look up the words meaning because I'd never seen that word before.
I've really only had one big instance of trash talk aimed at me and it was after Halo: Reach was released and I was trying ranked for the first time. After the match my teammate sent an audio message saying "You play like a blind, autistic child with his thumbs chopped off. Never ever play this game mode again, ever." We won the match and I had scored two of our flags. I never played ranked again after that, but that's mainly because I don't like to stress over games. Looking back now it's just funny.

I personally, if I clap somebody in a game, will just give the parting words of. 'I hope we will meet again, see you.' It is far worse for the opposite to not be affected by it and outright ignore what just happened.

Trash talking should abide by a code:
1. Keep it within the agreed parameters.
2. Direct threats are a step too far.
3. Avoid being derivative.
4. No one has to participate if they don't want to.
the problem is with that last point. how do you define participation? there are weak skinned people out there who will cry just because they are listening to people being toxic, they don't even have to be actively involved in it. how do you police "participation" should a person just not enter voice chat at all if they dont want to heat trash talking? honestly? yes they should thats their choice, but people want to have their cake and eat it, people want to be in the voice chat and feel "safe"
The only rule of trash talk is that if you can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen and let the real men cook.
