  • Ever since her dirt debut in 2018, my girlfriend Alexis and I have been searching for the perfect all around bike for her. From the CRF230L, to the CRF150RB, the KX100, and ultimately the step up to her full size KTM 250XCW which she fell in love with. At 5'0" flat being vertically challenged is an understatement and off-road Enduro riding is already challenging enough, let alone not being able to touch the ground in most situations.
    Full size motorcycles can only be modified so much until you completely throw off the geometry, and after some intense single track riding in Arizona, we were at yet another fork in the road. Invest the $1,000 + in a proper suspension setup and still struggle to touch, or find something smaller and compromise performance. Thankfully by sheer luck, at the AMA vintage motorcycle days event we came across the perfect solution.
    It’s much easier to describe what the Beta Xtrainer isn’t than what it is. It isn’t a trials bike. It isn’t a race bike. It isn’t a motocrosser, hill-climber or adventure bike. What does that leave? Much, much more than you ever imagined. The Beta Xtrainer has an electric-start two-stroke motor that’s tuned like a trials bike for low-end power. It has a downsized conventional chassis but with soft suspension and a low seat height. It was originally conceived as an entry-level trail bike, but it’s been adopted by experienced off-road veterans and even pro motocrossers. It turns out that it’s universally appealing as a cross trainer for anyone wanting to build off-road skills at any level.
    Here is our initial thoughts on the 2021 Beta Xtrainer.

    I'm really frustrated at the manufacturers for not making smaller bikes. I'm 6'1", and even I don't like 37 inch seat heights. She looks great on that bike, and it makes me happy that she finally found it.

      Agreed. I'm 6' with a 35" leg and I bought a 400sm because I could flat foot it. Now that I am off roading more, the 21-18 rims I put on make the bike 2 inches taller, and I have to tip toe the thing.
      I feel like a KLX 230s or a tt250 would be a way better learner dirt bike for most riders simply because of the ability to touch ground. Anyone tried either of those?

      What is generally available
      in performance bikes
      is basically two choices size wise,
      an example would be
      CRF150RB vs CRF250R
      You can have a tiny
      51'' wheelbase or a 58''
      wheelbase, and frames to match ,
      so one is too small for many of us
      and the other too large.
      They refuse to offer us a performance bike
      with a 54'' + - wheelbase, something
      in between the tiny and huge framed bikes,
      with a curb weight of 200lbs, and a seat height
      around 34'' , 35'' , and 35-40 hp, not 12hp lol.

    I will be shocked if she doesn't absolutely love the Beta. The chassis geometry being a little closer to a trials bike allows so much confidence in technical terrain combined with beautiful throttle control and of course the 300 2 stroke bottom end grunt makes for a nearly perfect machine to learn and progress on for smaller riders.

    I am 5’5” with a 30” inseam & the greatest investment I made to my 2005 KTM EXC 500, that I purchased new in 2005, was to have the suspension lowered by 3” both forks & shock was the addition of lowering shims, all of which are reversible. The original seat height of 37” just did not work for me. Now with the 34” seat height I can touch the ground with both feet with the ball of each foot. My suspension tuner, trained & certified by Race Tech suspension, changed the springs for my weight & adjusted the compression/rebound for my riding abilities. No stock bike suspension is ever going to work for you like custom suspension. It should be the main modification done to any bike you ride. Once you ride a bike set up for you & your needs I can say it will make you a better rider. You can always gain skill which helps, but suspension made for your needs is guaranteed to help make you happier when you ride!!!

    • @edwinarmstrong9175
      @edwinarmstrong9175 Год назад +2

      @@ThatsMyBully according to the Race Tech suspension tuner who did it all they do is add lowering shims. He should them to me & the looked like a washer to me. You can lower by the amount he installed. They can lower both ends up to 3” or less without hurting the suspension & when they take it into account as they adjust all settings for your custom needs to make the bike suspension work for you. Now if you need it lower than 3” he also said the suspension parts can be cut to go lower but after being cut it is not reversible. So I only did 3” just in case I decided to go back to the original height. By lowering internally the stock rideability stays the same, so cuts trails as the engineers intended it, which KTM does well with the 500’s. I hope this helps you. Just make sure you get a reputable suspension tuner. It takes good training to have someone to set it up properly for your needs. Good luck!

    • @olliechristopher467
      @olliechristopher467 Год назад

      Lowering suspension changes the handling of the bike in bad ways. For small children it can help gain confidence. For an adult not good.

    • @edwinarmstrong9175
      @edwinarmstrong9175 Год назад +2

      @@olliechristopher467 sorry you believe that because the Race Tech suspension guy that said they did it with Ricky Carmichael & because both ends are lowered the same rideing characteristics stay the same. The handling problems start when people add lowering links. That changes the dynamics of the suspension completely. When done internally all you lose is height. If your doing 30’ jumps that’s a major loss in travel which will cause bottoming if the springs aren’t added which they did in Ricky Carmichael’s bike to make the suspension work for him & he’s not the only rider professionally that does these suspension adjustments.

    • @olliechristopher467
      @olliechristopher467 Год назад +1

      @@edwinarmstrong9175 Rickys bike was way more than just suspension. His suspension, chassis and frame modifications cost more than you can even imagine. It was a whole custom build factory bike. By lowering suspension components you lose ground clearance and the bike will never handle as good as stock geometry.

If I could buy a new 300 2stroke with lower seat height from factory it would be done deal and parked in my garage. But most are 36-37 seat height. Xtrainer stock is 35.8'' which is better but still high and loose suspension quality. I live in pnw and so many single track trails. I could not consider a Beta if it does not have a California emissions sticker on the front, so not a 50 state bike. I don't think your bike is even legal in CA for a visit on the street. The 350 exc lowered both ends with a chopped seat is the unicorn for the lighter west coast riders. But there is never a wrong on 2 wheels, we're all in the same family. Ride what you brought. I’m 5’6” and I just got a KLX 230RS. As a shorter rider the shorter seat height of the 230rs does great for me being able to control the bike and the 233 cc engine is very torquey down low and loves to lug.
    Edit: when I was 16 to get on and start my YZ125 I had to have a log to stand on😂 yeah we need more stuff marketed to shorter riders.

    It is a shame that there aren't options for the short folk. My wife is the same size and always had a tough time getting a foot down. Consider swapping out that 140/80r18 for a 120/80r18 to help getting more toes to touch. Add Tubliss when you do it to keep the traction even though the tire is 1.25" shorter.

    The 350’s (my experience is with a 2022 EXC-F) only have a 6mm brembo clutch master cylinder. Combined with 4strokes are hard to run down low in general it makes hard and technical riding much more difficult. Of course you can upgrade to a bigger master but there expensive and the 6mm you can’t help even with midwest mountain engineering lever… I feel it makes the 6mm harder to pull… my buddy’s have Beta 300’s and they are absolute tanks. Good choice. I lowered my 350 2inches….

    I've been playing this game all my life. This is just another step. The machine I've fully settled on is the CRF150RB (big wheel), which you tried, but for some odd reason rejected. I don't understand that rejection. It has power everywhere, fits better than a full-size bike with 18"/21" wheels that someone tried to make smaller, and very important: when you fall and hafta move the bike around, it's SO much lighter. It's the machine I waited 30 years to find. I'm humbly betting that after a while, you'll come back to it. I did.

    Sounds like she likes the X-trainer. My wife is on a 200xc-w with a button. I this would be a good option for her as well. She has longer legs than me though so It wouldn't be lowered. I know several women who are on the KTM free ride and love them. My older 300 (2013) didn't bother me because I was used to it I guess. Never thought it vibed a lot. Jumped a "pre KTM" gas gas and it was like riding a paint mixer. The new 2022 GG300 is super smooth. I know the first time I rode a counter balance I immediately noticed the lack of vibes for sure. Its a stretch to say I wouldn't go back, but I do for sure like it.

    The fork springs are probably stock length (or should be). Double check that, because if anybody wants to change spring rates, they would have to have a special spring if KTM does not provide the shorter spring rates. I am sure they modified the fork to use the standard length spring, instead of making a bunch more springs that they might never use. on my YZ250 SSS forks, it was as easy as machining another groove on the OD of a aluminum tube.
