The late '90s early '00s were a really interesting time for otaku media, the denpa stuff that came out back then has an atmosphere that hasn't truly been matched since imo
Very well said. Its niche and still an obscure genre, though many have lunged at it from a more “nostalgic” standpoint to it today and more on aesthetics over horror which I believe due to the focus on replicating is why it just doesn’t match the same. I can only think about Subarashiki Hibi being better than its predecessor, Tsui no Sora 1999 and its 2020 remake being better than its original too.
@@jewelybarai4774 Boogiepop was originally released as light novel, in a time and place where they where simple pulp publications that didn't really have a large audience and where thought of as very cheap, throwaway entertainment, by this new publishing imprint called Dengeki Bunko (nowadays the biggest light novel publisher, who publish most of the light novels that have gone to become very popular and well received anime). It was a gigantic hit in Japan, skyrocketing not only the company's popularity but also light novels in general to a new light, and with that, redefining YA fiction forever in Japan (and i can't forget to mention Haruhi Suzumiya, who came a few years later but was undoubtedly the most important thing to happen to the industry, Boogiepop being a distant second only to that). Not only was Boogiepop very important to the industry itself, the author's writing style was also something you didn't really see at all in this part of the industry, a very soliloquised, non-linear, mysterious storytelling with a strong sense of atmosphere that has inspired many young writers to this day, some of note that you might know yourself, as Ryohgo Narita (Durarara!!, Baccano!) and NisiOisin (Monogatari, Zaregoto). Hopefully that helps you understand what i meant with the original comment.
I think we're getting this. There's been some ducking amazing anime lately that puts effort into giving that atmosphere, Chainsaw Man being an great example.

if anime has taught me anything, is that if you end up in an anime, you can make a fortune selling ridiculous clothing. weird hats, one glove, mile long scarfs and sashes. and find a belt wholesaler, because goddamn...
To be fair i imagine it would be pretty hard seeing as itd usually just the main cast of the show that wheres that. What would that be? Like less than 0.00001 percent of the population?
You know an anime is high quality when the music design can inspire and horrify you simultaneously, and man, does Boogiepop Phantom achieve both. Beauty and tragedy wrapped in a nostalgic foil.
idk theres lots of freaking good ops. my fave of all time is bebop so its not like you arent onto something. But there are loads and loads of epic ops.
Just started watching this for the first time today, thank you. Is not easy to find, and I was always curious to see it. First episode is promising, mysterious, eerie, oddly beautiful and for brief moments terrifying, just the mix of show I find fascinating.
This brings back memories, I think I was 9 or 10 when I watched one or two episodes and remembered how creepy they were, especially the one about some dude falling in love with a girl in a RPG game (I think...?). I thought the phantom was quite an interesting yet cold character and scared those who had encounters with her. Whenever I listen to the intro's song, I think about that one Spanish song, Mi problema Se Llaman Tu (⬅pretty sure that's incorrect), because of the beat and the guitar and the rhythm.
When I first watch this i have WTF in mind, "what is that about"... Very strange anime and I prefer original (in anime) for it's art style and more eerie vibe. Anyway great respect for that, cuz without Boogiepop we propably would'nt have so much popular light novel and not see many anime series....
I watched the DVDs in the anime club back in my college days(long before Boogiepop and Others anime came out) and nobody in the audience really understood what the heck was going on in the show, LOL. Nobody including myself read the Boogiepop novels and the anime doesn't really bother explaining for newcomers,
Wasnt that basically Dragonball in the US? From what I know(Im not from the US; this is what I picked up) Z, the dub series with the Super Saiyans, 5 minutes till Namek exploding lasting for 10 episodes and OVER 9000, was the first version of Dragonball to ever reach the states. They ignored Goku''s entire childhood years until much, much later.

Here after seeing Kaiju No. 8's godawful OP and reading the horrid comments people made under it. They said "finally an anime op that doesn't spoil the plot" and that "it tells you nothing yet tells you everything", and man does that piss me off. Here you go, here's what they want, but I doubt this is a show they'd like. This is an actual not spoiling of the plot(even literal shounen OPs don't spoil the plot, they only become recognizable as such with context) and telling you everything you need while telling you nothing. It's perfectly representational of the kind of show this is, it sets the tone and the feeling of the show. Kaiju No. 8's fails most because it does not at all tell you what kind of show it is, if you saw that without seeing the show you'd think it was completely different.
So no funny syot.... can some one please explain what this anime was supposed to be about?😅 I saw the episode with the spiders as a kid and just never got a chance to go back and finish🤷🏿♂️
Show’s an epilogue to “Boogiepop and Others” and a sequel to “Boogiepop at Dawn”, two light novels in the Boogiepop series, the show’s events only really make sense if you’ve read those two books but essentially various teenagers become “evolved humans” and cause chaos both directly and indirectly in an unnamed Japanese city. It’s closer to an anthology series than anything else until the last episode.
This show made no sense if you hadn't read the books. The anime they made a few years ago did a way better job and in my opinion was criminally underrated

The Post-Evangelion Era
I was hopeful for the new anime but they rushed through it like all modern light novel adaptations do.
Anime fans have more to thank Boogiepop for doing than they'll ever truly know.
May I ask why?

I've always found this opening's choice of characters to highlight to be interesting. Like, why Kuroda and not Phantom?
Its funny that boogiepop phantom got popular in the US despite making no sense without boogiepop and the others which didnt get adapted until 2019
The first Boogiepop light novels were translated in English some years prior to the 2019 anime
I guess in 90s and early 2000s people were more into vague and surreal stuff. I wish this happens again.
