I see it as a show that gives ideas, but still leaves enough open for interpretation. My interpretation after watching it a second time is that it's about growing up and getting on in life from childhood, but still keeping those fond childhood memories. It may be dark and gritty, but it still has a unique beauty to it. It's genius.

It was my first, too, not counting mass-market stuff like Pokemon and Digimon. This was the anime that got me into anime. TechTV (and later G4) aired some series under the Anime Unleashed block. This, Cromartie High School, Lain, Gungrave and The SoulTaker were among those shows.
This song makes me cry. During high school when this anime came out I was in love with a girl I couldn’t date. I remember having a day with her where we walked in the rain holding hands and every time that memory comes to me this song plays along with it.

I remember being a preteen when this would come on the Funimation channel late at night. As an insomniac who loved anime, I’d stay up with the TV on and eventually Boogiepop Phantom came on. The opening was so relaxing, I was in love. I ended up learning why the show came on so late-it was definitely NOT for 11 year olds. Well, I’m 24 now and still come back to listen to this song, and I own the Boogiepop light novels and watched the 2019 anime as it aired, so it didn’t traumatize me too badly.
When I watched this, it took me a long time to finish it even though I could've binged it, it isn't a bad anime just at the time I was a bit tired of anime... Ngl I still am ever since quarantine- but the op is a bop

In fact, ironically, it's because I watched Boogiepop when I was 13 years old that I became interested in those animes (watched, chronologically, Lain, Texhnolyze & Ergo Proxy directly some weeks after finishing Boogiepop.) It also opened my mind to literature, as awkward at it may sound (the Nietzsche quote, "God is Dead", in one of Boogie episode.)

Yeah, I agree. The OP and ED are just generic pop songs that don't capture the feel of Boogiepop. I would have liked them to have a western song as an ED, like how Jojo did, since Boogiepop has musical references.
I'm really late but you can't expect that people have the aesthetics of the 2008 like Samurai Champloo so they have to model the characters more modern like but I think they did amazing and was well recognized
@@WalkerRileyMC The new anime follows like 6 novels and tried to condense them into 2-3 episodes each. You miss so much with the new anime compared to the books. By comparison, the old anime is all original content, not a book adaptation, and captures the feeling of reading a boogiepop novel much better.

I'm really late but you can't expect that people have the aesthetics of the 2008 like Samurai Champloo so they have to model the characters more modern like but I think they did amazing and was well recognized
@@WalkerRileyMC The new anime follows like 6 novels and tried to condense them into 2-3 episodes each. You miss so much with the new anime compared to the books. By comparison, the old anime is all original content, not a book adaptation, and captures the feeling of reading a boogiepop novel much better.
