      rejection WILL happen. It's important to keep trusting your skills, you could be the sweetest peach on the tree, but not everyone likes peaches. Which also means there is a market out there that would love to have you! Good luck on your journey, and when you're scared, do it scared. 💫

    Always love hearing these kind of stories from big creators, it's nice to know we all go through the learning stages and growing pains! Something that I learned last year while working at an animation studio where I sat in on a lot of pitches is that it's usually better to not put too much work forward in the pitch because 1. you're usually not paid for it, and 2. if they see the designs mocked up to an almost finished standard, they might jump to a no immediately without giving you the chance for further development because they can already see the end product which may not be what they're looking for. I have always been the overboard type like you, so I was really surprised by this! Maybe that little nugget of wisdom will be helpful, maybe not : ) Good luck with your future endeavours!

  • @aoe41015
    @aoe41015 Год назад +1

    I’ve learnt that rejection isn’t a bad thing. It sucks but it’s nowhere near the level of working on a project, getting close to finalising the work and then the client moves on without you due to creative differences. That is a real kick in the teeth. Got paid for it but it sucks because the longer you work on something the more you want to see it in the world.

    I think looking at the illustration that was chosen for the book is interesting! You can see that the illustrator that got picked was really talented (so you "lost" to a worthy opponent) as well as getting an idea of what the author chose compared to their description of what they wanted.
    Obviously the final pick can just come down to personal taste though!

I feel cheered on to start trying more now!!! Also please a podcast , PLEASE!! I hope you have a fantastic rest of the week!! I saw or heard a thing once about not putting stuff in your portfolio if it’s not how you actually usually like to work (because if people see it and want that vibe, it’s going to contribute to the *struggle*). Maybe it was Anoosh Syed who said it? But anyway, the thing that stinks about that is the majority of the work I’ve done for money is not what I’d actually like to do in the future. I guess that makes posting personal stuff more important!

    • @furrylittlepeach
      @furrylittlepeach  Год назад

      Yes! Only put in the work you want to receive!!! Generally clients will book you based on your portfolio and if you put work you don't like in it they may use it as a reference or want you to go that direction which will then get you more of that work. Only share the work you're proud of or wanna continue to make !

    Thank you for making this video. I am a graphic designer and it has been a week of rejection for me! I also do way more work than I am asked to do because I am a perfectionist too ;\ The marketing team at the company I work for are not nice at all about telling me that they don't like anything I do. It's tough because they don't give proper briefs for projects and I am not invited to the meetings about the projects. Usually, I'm just briefed verbally by a third party and given very little information to go off. When I ask questions I get nothing back but it's still my fault when I don't get it right because I should be able to read their minds! I need a new job!

    • @furrylittlepeach
      @furrylittlepeach  Год назад +106

      No! That's something I wanted to speak about that I forgot to mention - thank you for reminding me! Publishing is the only industry that I've experienced free pitching - I know it existed when I was working as a designer (apart of an agency). Not sure if it's normal tbh because other than my own books I've pitched for projects 2-3 times. This is another reason just to do what's asked rather than go overboard. However I fell in love with the story and really wanted the job - as I mentioned that I had unmanaged OCD at the time which I think contributed to me going overboard. I think if I got the same brief today I would restrain myself 🤣

    • @furrylittlepeach

      Hmm.. I guess it really depends on the pressure of needing the job too. It would be devistating to lose a job that is the difference between being able to pay your bills or not. And a few rejections in a row would definitely amplify the feelings. I was lucky that this brief was sandwiched between other projects.
      Hope you land something soon!

    This video was so encouraging!!! ❤ I’d love for you to do a video on making work as a illustrator for a portfolio, specifically in mind of people who may not have any ‘portfolio’ pieces. Would you do for example, two book covers, and some character illustrations? What wouldn’t you include? How long would you give your self to make each piece or the portfolio it’s self? I know this has a lot to do about what kind of illustrator you are, but it would be so amazing to hear your perspective on it c:
