I have had a ms241c now for about 4 years, it's a work horse. Just changed over from an 18" bar to a 14" one, It rips through everything. Super happy with it. Nice Review and break down
Don, I got a ms241cm last year and it has been a pleasure until Sunday. I had cut off a bunch of stumps off a ground level, which meant I had to clean it, fully, after use. After cleaning and resharpening, I gave it my customary crank. It would not start, period. The first thing I checked was "for spark" and it had what appeared to be spark it not the normal "rat, a tap, tap" sound we normally hear. Regardless, I accepted it as spark. Then I started looking at any fuel related problems and found none. So, I put it in the shop on the shelf and deferred the resolution until the next day. I worked on it for several days but it still would not start. I was about to take it in to a Stihl dealer, since it was still under warranty when I decided to take a look at spark one more time. I pulled the boot off the plug and the coil wire an connector came right out of the boot. Then I knew why the spark looked more like St. EMMA'S fire than a clean blue spark.. I squeezed the barb connector back into the coil wire, put a plastic tie around it and connected it to the plug. Bingo, it cranked with one pull. I have since got it back into the boot and reconnected, correctly, but I put another plastic tie in the grove at the end of the boot, so it cannot, easily get out of the boot, again. I will now start with one pull, every time. John
I just bought a MS 461 R and will try it soon. I think I will be glad I didn't get the 661 to replace the 064 that was stolen from me. It has been a long time since I was a tree faller. I am now a senior citizen firewood cutter. Thanks for your videos. I was unable to make my friend's Poulan 4016 run properly by making carb adjustment.
Very useful review, thanks. Here in Japan the ms241c sells for the equivalent of C$ 1400. At that price I might fly to Canada, have a holiday, and come back with one!
I have had a question for a while now. This saw being right around 43cc's is a bigger saw but it only has 1 bar nut. I have a small ms 170 and it has 2 bar nuts. Does that chain stay tighter with 2 bar nuts? And why would Stihl put 1 nut on a bigger saw and 2 on a smaller saw? Husqvarna does the same thing.
Hmm. Odd. Does the one vs. two bar nuts make a difference? Ive ran the little homelites with one bar nuts and it seemed like i was always re-tensioning the chain all the time where i dont do it so often with my ms 170 with 2 bar nuts.
Took delivery of my ms 241 cm, today. It is everything you said of it and more. The only thing I did not like was that 3/8P chain it came with. At least, it not come with that .043 chain they put on the smaller saws. Mine did come with a canvas tool pouch and a T27 wrench. I did not find any loose screws after two tanks but I will check them again in my normal PM checks. I was also surprised that it was not really filthy after I got through using it, today. Mine, started with one pull when I started it on the second tank. It is now on its 3rd tank.
I have one Stihl MS241C Chainsaw left for $379.95 with 16" bar or 379.95 with 18" bar here in Maine. Comes with a nice durable case, file, wrench, sm can 2 cycle oil and a pair of work gloves. My business went on the market this past Monday, been doing it 32 years and I just had the last of my discs in my back removed and fused with bone from my hip and the standing is getting to me.
I've been using the MS261 for just over two years now. Great saw, just a little bigger than the 241, it's 50cc. Other than that they're almost the exact same saw. I highly recommend them.
Yea I recommend the 261 also, the extra torque is welcomed compared to this, and with about 1lb difference but 33% more power, it's an obvious choice for a do-it-all farm saw. Light and powerful. If you want lighter, a cordless electric combo with 261 is just perfect!
Norwegian price for MS 241C-M is between 6075 -> 7190,- Nkr. As of 26 june 2015, that is equivalent to 775 -> 918,- US$ or 692 -> 819,- Euros. Not sure if there is a significant difference between the C and the C-M model though.
Hi all, as always Australia will pay a premium price for the same product AUD$1,359.00 as of Dec 2015. But when converted it should be with current exchange rates $763.17 so the additional $595.83 is for the love of it. End of vent.
Nice review. Bought the 241 about a year ago as I was finding my ms362 a bit heavy for working for prolonged periods. Getting old lol . Love the 241. Plenty of power and light. No issues with it yet
+donyboy73 Theyre $1359 in Australia, which is $1289 CAD today. we get royally overcharged this side of the pond.a Stihl ms 251 is $1049AUD for comparison you can buy a Makita 7301(dolmar) for $1179AUD, Makita 6100 for $979 and I just bought a makita 500 (dolmar ps 510) for $639 AUD, which whilst not a full pro saw is still a better option than the 251 (we havent got the 5100 here)
I have bought a stihl 046 saw to supplement my stihl 251 The piston is like new, but do not know The background and all funtions so could be fun if you could find one and go through it. with best regards
You didn't mention the fuel grade for this saw. I have seen many people use 87 octane instead of 89 in other Stihl saws, which affects the performance and may harm the saw. Additionally, when getting gas at a gas station you should insure that all of the grade 87, which most cars use, is out of the gas pump hose before placing grade 89 into your container. Nice video.
William Klinger Jr Stihl isn't the ONLY great chainsaw maker, but sadly its just the same for chainsaws as it is for trucks with knuckleheads. Brand snobs. Husqvarna, Dolmar, Jonsered, Echo..etc all make saws just as good as a Stihl. Its all just personal preference
Donny I have a 009l topper starts great runs good. But does not want to restart when its hot. Would this be a module issue? I have opened the gas etc does not seem to be a air lock. Any repopes that you would suggest to replace with?
I have one as well. The one I have is about 20 years old but it runs well for its age. How old is your's?. These saws are known for flooding easily. I don't use it that often but when it gives me trouble like you're experiencing, I remove the plug and wipe it off and it starts again without problems. What works best for me is not turning it off unless I really need to.
Have 241c-m, after 2 1/2 year after purchase (half year after warranty ended) it started stalling, upon inspecting found out that it had melted the piston. Managed to cut about 10-15 tanks in total. Cylinder&piston kit costs more than a new decent saw. Expensive pile of...
I have a lawn mower issue. My mower starts good and runs good for a short time then the plug seams to foul. If I clean plug it runs good again. Oil level is good. It's a Briggs engine. Any tips?
Sounds like it may be burning oil or the main jet may be too fat. how many hours are on it? Does it smoke a lot when first started. If yes than id check the valve seals. If it smokes while running after its warmed up id look at the piston(s), rings, cylinder(s).
donyboy73 Yes, definitely that would be a nice trade:D. The prices ar almost the same in whole Europe. Only, I think that 241s are made in Germany here. Entry level saws are made in US and China.
Sounds good. I was wondering if they had changed from aluminum to plastic in the two years since this model came out. You always have concise and practical reviews. A great trusted source. Thank You.
is that "M-Tronic" ow whatever they call it electric ignition/fuel control a great innovation that wakes up the saw and works reliably or is it just a head ache with frequent failures and it makes trouble shooting alot more complicated then an all mechanical system
hey dony. hope all is well. would love to see a review on the stihl 261. and maybe the Husqvarna 550 xp. love the 50cc saws, seams their weight and power are almost perfect for most work . ..at least for most people. and have been wondering if you have had to work on any of the m-tronic / auto tune saws yet.
thanx dony for the reply. thank you for all the hard work you do filming and knowledge you share. your channel is my favorite. love soaken up all that knowledge you have.
Hello,Hope you can help?My neighbour just aquired a craftsman garden tractor tiller[ model# C944.611910].I have been searching for an on line manual with no luck.Could you please give me some advice, thank you
Vintagemachinery.org lists the 944 prefix as being manufactured by Husqvarna. vintagemachinery.org/craftsman/manufacturers.aspx?sort=2 Not sure if that helps at all.
Nifty they added some modern features found on cars. Still, a lot of waste in terms of heat. I wonder do they make 'green' small engines for chainsaws?
My Nelson, BC Stihl dealer lists that 241 at $649.95! Where in Canada are you? I am shopping for possibly Stihl vs Husky. I need a reliable, easily repaired small saw for approximately 1-2 cords annually. Would something like the MS181C with Easy2Start homeowner grade be gimmicky breaking plastic garbage? Is it worth the extra $200 to go professional grade? I am tired of yearly fixing junk. Please reply. It is firewood season and I've been trying to fix my saw all day
Hi dony im just looking at buying a new ground saw . but im afraid of buying problems I don't like the idea of these new electronic machines they say they can put them on a computer like your car and that's been expensive to me over the years with cars any thing you recommend good old faithful's and all THANKS
had a few bad experiences with stihl chainsaws that were day old ran on premix from stihl and wouldn't fix them so I haven't bought another one I picked up a 576 autotune! been only 1 month by so far so good! but I have a old 017 stihl and it runs mint and I have poulans and macs and a David Bradley and homlite super 12! no brand snob here its all about quality!
Sweet Saw but here in Oztralia it is listed on the Stihl website at $1169 Au which is $1196 Can. I love the Stihl saws but that is TOO much for my wallet to handle. Loving the videos. Quick question do you know where I can source Tecumseh pistons and rings. I was given got a 3-4 Hp beast that has melted the piston in the bore, seems a shame to scrap it for lack of a piston and rings. Cheers Eric
Bang DingOW Yes seriously $1196 Can. The usual excuse given is the cost of shipping. The price of many things you guys get in the US is doubled in Australia. That includes download software etc. and shipping costs can't be a actor there. Cheers Eric
Great review Dony! Very nice to have someone loan you a new saw to review. If it's ever possible to review any outdoor power equipment of any kind, I'll watch it. It's nice to know what new technology is out there in case something comes into your shop, that you might not be too familiar with.
the smart stihl chainsaw never seen anything like it Dony mate i don.t think we would have anything like that over here in Australia as far as i am aware and it looks great for its make and build too love it :)
Hi love your videos, I need your help!!! I have a toro super recycler mower, has Briggs motor and blade stop on it, has two belts , trying to change the drive belt on the trans, have it all apart, I can't get belt off motor shaft, cant see up there, it seems like it has a guide or something holding belt on do I have to get a puller and take belt pulley off, can't find any videos of this style, it has the aluminum mower deck and personal pace, going nuts trying to change, can you please help, I can text pictures. I think it's a 2008 model Please help !!!!!!
Great video Dony. That is one nice piece of equipment. Looks like it would be easy to maintain, Stihl though of just about everything. Great weekend Dony!
Don't ever run it out of gas, even to put it into storage condition. It's computer may decide it is dead and will not run, even after you refill it. I put my 241 in storage condition for 13 months and it thought it had died and would not run. I was so mad I put it on a box in my shop and just let it set for a week. I finally picked it up and it cranked up, although very sluggishly. It finally got its mid back and I used it to cut some big wood and it has behaved normally, since. This is a problem I have never faced with any other saw. My saws go in and out of storage, periodically. As of now, about half are in storage and half, operational.
Hello Dony, is the electronic carb adjustable by yourself? or do you need Stihl or Husqvarna special software? Thank you very much for every single video. Greetings

That's a great review with all the main points covered in an interesting way.
Thanks Donny I am trying to decide on a 241vs a261. Around the camp for fire wood but also on the quad for clearing trails
for trails and camp fire wood the 241 will be plenty
Took delivery of my ms 241 cm, today. It is everything you said of it and more. The only thing I did not like was that 3/8P chain it came with. I wish Stihl would bring these saws back to Canada.... I'd buy one in heartbeat....
Same but here in NH
Love those new screws on the cover. And the nut on the clutch cover is a good idea, too.
I got the Stihl MS261C for 814.00 Euros in Greece while the MS241C s price was 695.00 Euros. Both with 40cm / 16" bar

You have 241's left?

Donyboy have you seen a 3 sided float needle? Does it matter what side faces float? The flat part of needle or the triangle part. Thanks.
Just bought one of these chainsaws
This brilliant review is just what i wanted thank you
Can you review some of the soccer moms that are in the Stihl catalog? Thanx.
lol
Like the ones running the hedge trimmers and weedeaters?
is it possible to adjust the idle speed on thoose m-tronic carbs ? maybe with a little screw on the carb ?

+OnTarget100 wow expensive, you could almost buy one from Canada and get it shipped
+donyboy73
Round trip airfare US to AUS is about $600 right now.
Gotta love socialism huh!
Nice review. Bought the 241 about a year ago as I was finding my ms362 a bit heavy for working for prolonged periods. Getting old lol . Love the 241. Plenty of power and light. No issues with it yet
What kind of maintenance and normal parts replacements can I expect from this saw?
What should the compression be on a honda gx110. When I tested it with three compression tools I got a little under 50
Also Donny do you find the topper chainsaws harder to use or more dangerous for less experienced people?
Nice chainsaw donyboy73 but the saw being at 43cc stihl didn't have to add the decompression valve.
Can you do a review comparing the farm boss MS 271 to the MS 262c
Did your 241 switch jump back to run automatically after shutting down.
Yes, it's a feature
I like the cover bolts and air cleaner.
Hi, these are $1295.00 here in New Zealand new, at today's rates that is $1124 Canadian.

Can you do a review on the ms271
Hello sir. Can i buy Cylinder block assy STIHL MS241C ? I Stay in cambodia
Id like to see a review of a MS361 with a 24"/25" bar, if you haven't reviewed one already.
can you do a review of the ms311 chainsaw? fs560c-m brush cutter?
893 CAD in Finland on sale. List price is 1266 CAD
Don, how about a review on either the Stihl MS 660 or 661? Thanks. Keep up the interesting videos.
i'll see what I can do
Buy stihl or go home! Only pros roll with these bad boys. Love it, have for years!
Yeah, Stihl is the only choice for me as an arborist.
@@TimKollat Right on the money. Well said!
Really like the idea of a lighter yet pro saw as I and my back get older.
Excellent
Hi Dony, ever had the chance to test a Husqvarna 545 saw? it´s about same size and features as this Stihl.
Should I run my fuel mix a little richer with brand new 2 cycle equipment?
Looks like the perfect all around saw for someone with a bit of property that needs to round up some fallen trees. Would really like to own one.
All the local Stihl dealers list it as DSRP $549.95 but none have it in stock or list an "out-the-door" price. I'm near Chicago.
here they have sold out already
Donny I have a 009l topper starts great runs good. But does not want to restart when its hot. Would this be a module issue? I have opened the gas etc does not seem to be a air lock. Any repopes that you would suggest to replace with?

Was that air filter the washable kind? That would be nice if so?!
not sure, I would have to doublecheck

Nice saw and great review Donny!
thanks
anyone know where I can get one of these gems??
Very nice saw. Great review. In Croatia the saw cost about 1150CAD. Much more expensive as you can see.
wow expensive, may have to start shipping saws to you
donyboy73
Yes, definitely that would be a nice trade:D. The prices ar almost the same in whole Europe. Only, I think that 241s are made in Germany here. Entry level saws are made in US and China.
So which one: This Stihl 241cm or the Dolmar 421?
Great review. Just curious, is that white pull cord mesh cover on the side plastic or aluminum?
Thanks, Murray
+WM Harris I believe it's plastic
Sounds good. I was wondering if they had changed from aluminum to plastic in the two years since this model came out.
You always have concise and practical reviews. A great trusted source. Thank You.
2cyclemix we figured out it is the coil when it gets hot. I will have to source a coil out for it
Good review TU.. Something new the decompression valve , have not seen them on .. but have not looked the newer line in awhile . cheers

Andrew Browner I’ve had good experiences with my 362cm , which also has the electric. I think they’re pretty reliable
hey dony. hope all is well. would love to see a review on the stihl 261. and maybe the Husqvarna 550 xp. love the 50cc saws, seams their weight and power are almost perfect for most work . ..at least for most people. and have been wondering if you have had to work on any of the m-tronic / auto tune saws yet.

thanx dony for the reply. thank you for all the hard work you do filming and knowledge you share. your channel is my favorite. love soaken up all that knowledge you have.
just bought one of these very happy with it your review really helped with my purchase decision thanks
Hello,Hope you can help?My neighbour just aquired a craftsman garden tractor tiller[ model# C944.611910].I have been searching for an on line manual with no luck.Could you please give me some advice, thank you
check sears parts
Vintagemachinery.org lists the 944 prefix as being manufactured by Husqvarna. vintagemachinery.org/craftsman/manufacturers.aspx?sort=2 Not sure if that helps at all.
dony, a foam air filter must impede the flow of air somewhat, do you agree?...
not usually if the proper filter is used, if too much oil gets into it then it will impede the flow
Dony,
Great video !!!
Do you have any trouble shooting hints for this electronic carb?
Yeah you need the mothership at the stihl dealer to do that...
nice saw don.when are you going to get one?? a nice review would on a ms660 or 661 if u can.
Always love your videos, Don, thanks. Because of you I'm going to be buying a lawn tractor that doesn't run right, fix it, and save a bundle!
thanks, happy fixing!
700 Euro here in Ireland. That works out at 1070 Canadian!

yes you are better to spend more and get professional grade. the 181 is just for small stuff occasionally
2015 Stihl MS241C with 35cms bar in Spain costs 750€; which is more than there in US or Canada, I think...
sure is more, I wonder why since it's made in Europe anyway
Thanks for the video.
Could you please make a review of Stihl MS362 C-M?
ok shouldn't be a problem
how about a review on the MS461
i'll see what I can do
thanks. looking at different models cause soon hopefully ill have a part time job and can start my tree climbing business at the age of fifteen.
ian martin I don't think you'll find insurance at that age, but I may be mistaken.
i will be hard but i think there are a few smaller companies here in the states
Wish I could find one in the states new ...
Man, this is a great review! Thanks

IF YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT THAT THEN JUST GET A SAW Without the m-tronic or auto-tune
Here in Australia the 241 cm is $1,169 with a 16" bar.
had a few bad experiences with stihl chainsaws that were day old ran on premix from stihl and wouldn't fix them so I haven't bought another one I picked up a 576 autotune! been only 1 month by so far so good! but I have a old 017 stihl and it runs mint and I have poulans and macs and a David Bradley and homlite super 12! no brand snob here its all about quality!
Great review, tired of my old Poulan's, and always giving me trouble, I'm looking at the 250, or 251. Thanks for the great video !
Review on ms 261
as soon as I have time
Great Review Dony........ I've had good luck with Huscavarna, I bought a H-50 in 86. Been a great saw. :)
that model was very popular in Canada

Quick question do you know where I can source Tecumseh pistons and rings. I was given got a 3-4 Hp beast that has melted the piston in the bore, seems a shame to scrap it for lack of a piston and rings.
Cheers Eric
very expensive!
Bang DingOW
Yes seriously $1196 Can.
It's nice to know what new technology is out there in case something comes into your shop, that you might not be too familiar with.
more reviews to come!
john. from Ireland. I have over one hundred saws. all stihl and a few husky. yes the 261 is a good saw.
the price of a 261c. is about 750 eurs
John Lawler wow you must have a nice collection
the smart stihl chainsaw never seen anything like it Dony mate i don.t think we would have anything like that over here in Australia as far as i am aware and it looks great for its make and build too love it :)
Looks like a great saw. Carries a €700 price tag here, so you'd expect it to be pretty good for that price.
€854 here in Ireland $1300.nice saw im thinking of buying a ms 261cm how would you rate them, btw love your vids.
jcb 3cx 98 from Ireland myself, thanks for the price, I was expecting it to be cheaper around €580 or something like that, €854 is pricey
probably double the price here in australia.
Can you do a Stihl 261

In Finland MS241C costs 739.00 € = $974,22, some website price.

No carb adjustment?!
Correct.
Nice saw bought one today in Dublin Ireland and the price was 659 euro.
Great video Dony. That is one nice piece of equipment. Looks like it would be easy to maintain, Stihl though of just about everything. Great weekend Dony!
Great review- the price for the USA= $529 (16 inch bar) in Nov 2017
Don't ever run it out of gas, even to put it into storage condition. It's computer may decide it is dead and will not run, even after you refill it. I put my 241 in storage condition for 13 months and it thought it had died and would not run. I was so mad I put it on a box in my shop and just let it set for a week. I finally picked it up and it cranked up, although very sluggishly. It finally got its mid back and I used it to cut some big wood and it has behaved normally, since. This is a problem I have never faced with any other saw. My saws go in and out of storage, periodically. As of now, about half are in storage and half, operational.
Price in Ireland is crazy €839. Bought one in the Uk €510 good little saw.
Just want to say your videos always informative
thank you Gas Man 101!
Hello Dony, is the electronic carb adjustable by yourself? or do you need Stihl or Husqvarna special software? Thank you very much for every single video. Greetings
I think you can adjust with a screwdriver, except the limiters might be in the way
Thanks for another great video, I think technology just got away on me with that M-Tronic system
this or the ms311?
This is way weaker than 311. Get 261 if you want more power.
I have a review request; Husqvarna 550
Sounds like the 441 I think is because it has the strato engine
Thank you for the advice and review, man !
