I’d have to say fellas I was trying to explain to my buddy how to put his chain on and adjust it over the phone and I decided it would probably be better if I showed him. Then I decided to check RUclips and found your video. I sent it to him and he had no problem, thanks for the video and saving me the time. 👍 ps I went over the next week and he was doing exactly like your video. Thanks again, Jason from Snohomish Washington.
This is one of the better sources for information and the added tips are very useful. I have a MS 170 that is the best running saw I've ever owned and it cuts great, it can't compete with the larger Husqvarna's but I didn't get for those jobs. Also have Stihl trimmers and they are awesome for the heavier work. Have never owned a Stihl product that didn't perform like it claimed it would, the little MS 170 is overworked but it does a great job and keeps going.
Wonderful information two things. 1. Had a problem when we flipped the blade that the chain was on backwards so don't forget to do that! 2. Also, common problems would be nice (oil & grease inside cover plate, excess dirt or wear on blade and cover, cross threaded, etc.)
Great share my friend....here it is in my laymen terms... The stretch is actually the chain link holes get worn from overheating and a lack of oil. Also, after each use at the end of the day, loosen the tension, to help prevent the hole and pins fron holding pressure on them and slow the " holes from wollering out. I found most of these clues from you and other people, so don't think I am an expert. Just sharing the knowledge I have been shown. Remember if this sounds odd, but having 70 and more links in a chain, and getting each hole say 1/16" each of hole wear, then add that up and you understand how the chain will be longer overall when installed and pulled to length. Metal expands when over heated. Just a litte simple math. Be safe out there and enjoy the great outdoors !
Thank you!!! I can’t wait to discover more of your tips and tricks. I have a garage full of Stihl products and I’m sure your insight will help me keep everything in top-top shape!!!
Múltiple times they explained it to me but it had never sunken in because they showed me how and never did it myself, until recently, got a brand new chain and it kept coming loose 5 times even and I was starting to get confused and gave up, I'm about to try it as shown, and let's hope it stays on this time, also, the for the storing tip and about how the heat can loosen up the chain... and I'm guessing a brand new chain would expand much more than an older chain... keeping it in mind the!
Stihl Inc...On mounting a bar I saw a RUclips from Redbull661 that made a lot of sense because I have bound my saw up on several occasions mounting it the way you recommend and never knew why. He explained that when you lift the tip and then tighten the bar nuts if you use the top of the bar and it slips at all you will put tremendous pressure on the crankshaft and bar sprocket enough to seize the saw. If all you are doing is bucking, lifting the tip makes sense because you are always pushing up from the bottom. But if you are using the top and bottom of the bar it makes sense to tighten with the tip down.
Now if you could only tell my local authorized Stihl Service Center to not leave the chain tensioned when not in use. Just had it serviced (picked up yesterday, but dropped off two weeks ago) and I had them install a new chain while they were there. Fully tensioned when I picked it up. But the chainsaw is AMAZING though. Thanks STIHL.
Hi, Mike. Thanks for reaching out! You can find information on how to tension the chain of your STIHL MS 180 on page 31 in the owner's instruction manual. You can find the manual here: bit.ly/3SYqOQt
Cheers Guys.., informative vid and i've got the tool-less adjustment on my saw so it was cool that you included it also the info about cold and hot chains was helpful....
All of my previous saws have an adjustment screw to control the oiler rate. I can't find it on this MS 271. The rate is too slow. One fill for 4 gas fills.
Heat is VERY significant on adjusting the chain. I ALWAYS LET MY SAW COOL DOWN BEFORE ADJUSTING THE CHAIN! Why? I ruined, wrecked one crankshaft years ago on a 032! Take a break, walk around, then adjust.
I accidentally ran my msa 120 without oil (thought it was full). After about half hour of cutting very small branches and dead trees, it just stopped working. Was my very first time EVER using a saw. Anyhow, the place i purchased from oiled the chain, etc. Is this really bad?? LOL...Very new to this stuff and NOT mechanically inclined.....
I just recently purchased a Stihl ms170 figured I'd go with the best chainsaw on the market but the chain keeps popping off on me what could be the reason for that any tips would be greatly appreciated thank you
Hello Mario, Make sure when tightening the chain you lift the bar up and leave about a 1/4" of slack underneath. IF you are getting more than a 1/4" of slack, it is likely the chain has stretched from heat or friction. If the chain is not sharp the friction will cause the chain to stretch. Consider purchasing a new chain.
What do you do if your chain has stretched so much that the tightening adjustment is all the the way out and the chain still isn't tight enough?? Stihl chain
I have a MS 251 C-BE and I love it. But I went to turn the bar over and couldn't get the tensioner off. This is the first time turning the bar over. The screw that attaches to the tensioner and bar had came out and I removed the bar but can't get the tensioner off to replace the screw onto the bar. Any help........
+Jason Clendenin id suggest taking it to your nearest stihl store and having them fix it for you. ask to watch so you know what to do if it happens again.
Can't for the life of me figure out my 024 AVS. Appears the adjustable screw face outward, towards the chain. Mine didn't have one when bought and I now have a adjustment kit for it. Not sure if it's the correct one however.
Siomonte That's the difference between these models. The AV "Super" models have it facing the chain, right against the bar, I found out. I have since found an Oregon brand one that works
I bought a quick adjust chainsaw last year. When I went to tighten the chain yesterday, the plastic adjustment cover refuses to move in either direction. This should not happen with a chainsaw that is less that 2 years old and has only been used less than 5 times. Does anyone know how to free the adjustment wheel?
They fail to deal with removing the chain from a quick change tensioner. Everyone know how to do it with the two nut type but the quick change is new. Pity its not covered.
Anyone that can help me with my chainsaw issue? When we use the saw (say about 2-3 logs) the chain becomes slacked. after taking off cover, re-tightening chain and so forth. Then try a few more and it just becomes lose again? Does something need replaced? Tensioner? Or maybe the sprocket?
sinnerswrath1 If it keeps coming off the sprocket something is wrong. Sprocket may be worn, adjuster stripped, chain not on right or it's too loose or backwards, bent shaft, etc. I would take it to an authorized tech to give it a check up.
@@Pingaheimer most of the wear on a chainsaw bar happens on the top and nose of the bar. If you flip it periodically it will disperse the wear and make the bar last longer.

Too loose or else you’re twisting the saw while cutting, try to make straight cuts, you can’t use the saw bar to lever or pry at the wood

Great advice. ...
I am thinking about buying Stihl chainsaw from my local hardware store soon. Which Quick Adjustment or tool-on screwing are better for homeowner use?
The saw you buy will come with a tool that adjusts everything.
Screw (two nut adjuster) The quick change one is made of plastic and impossible to turn. It will probably break if you force it. Stay traditional
Thank you
Soo when da chain is loose.. Jus wait till it cools down than adjust it?
The quick adjust would be a good idea if it wasn't made out of plastic.

how do you remove the tensioner to install a chain saw winch
I have a ms 251 Chainsaw and I have tightened it up all it goes and chain still has slack ? Any ideas
@@stihlusa yea that’s what I was thinking. I’ll get a new one thank you! Great video by the way.

If it helps it is the STIHL farm boss
Also have a Stihl MS 210 and both have the same issue
new chains need a few tanks of gas to break in.after that the tensioning becomes less frequent. And why remove the cover?
just to clean the sawdust or buildup where the oil comes out. and because it keeps coming off the sprocket i guess so you have to put it all back on
