Not really, the economics of trying to be a superpower off the back of an economy the size of Italy (and with similar levels of corruption to go with it!) mean you either fail, or you try to increase the size of your economy. The legacy of Soviet Communism made the internal path impossible, pointing to the acquisition of external assets the only viable option. However, when you've chewed those up, you run out of room, which is what happened to the USSR. Trying to repeat the exercise hoping for better results was an exercise in futility, particularly considering the costs of cleaning up the rusting tubs of history cluttering up the Kola Peninsula (most of their sub fleet, around 500 nuclear reactors, which will cost around 100 million each to dismantle). The days of the Federation are few now - Winter isn't alone in coming, China may be riding on its heels. Tartars vs Mongols? Now that might make history - is a Central Asian Federation feasible?

The crazy thing is, Putin had it made. He had killed all of his political enemies. He had Europe addicted to his fossil fuels and was taking in huge revenues from that. He had good relationships with China and India even. He could use all of those revenues and relationships to continue to bolster his military and his economy and keep the Russians happy. But now, due to his catastrophic land grab, that's all gone.

I have been in Ukraine twice since the beginning of the war and shall be back again this month. One thing that needs to be pointed out is how high moral is in Ukraine, even at a time when it was possible that the enemy could win. On the other hand, the amount of indiscriminate destruction by the enemy is horrendous.

The United States funded and opened the Joint Multinational Training Group in Western Ukraine in 2015 with nearly 200 American soldiers to train Ukrainians. In February of 2022 the training facility and the American soldiers were transferred to Germany where they still are today. I guess the Americans don't get a thank you.

Panetta hit the nail on the head. Ultimately, Zlenskyy and the Ukrainian people will decide if they can give up Crimea or compromise in some way to end the conflict. Ukraine has gained so much respect because their morale is for freedom and sovereignty despite little to no training and a small military. There is lots of hope to them to protect their land and people so my thoughts go to them for their strength and courage to fight against them
This small and untrained military actually was in 24 february stronger than Spanish or any latin-american army including even mexican and brasilian.

having been enlisted in a citizen's army before, i can tell you many of those newly mobilised conscripts are DEFINITELY going to become cannon fodder. there are those who cannot shoot well to save their lives, especially they are only going to have minimal to no training at the shooting range!
When I was a US Army Infantryman in the early to mid-eighties, we had a healthy respect for Soviet-Russian forces.
Putin has let Russia's military turn to crap by diverting so many rubles to himself and his oligarchs pockets.

Remember the Russians had ramped up their military after WWII where at least 7 million died as a direct result of combat. The overall death toll of all Russian civilians is estimated at between 20 to 26 million people due the occupation, starvation, and other related reasons.
They weren't corrupted in the same way as they became after the wall fell to present day.
Russian expansionist and the period of the Cold War, the Soviets threw a vast majority of their resources into their military strength. They went to great lengths in their training and intelligence efforts to gain the advantage over the West.
We were right to take the Soviet military forces *_Very Seriously_* !!!
It was only after the wall fell that resources were drained by corrupt politicians and powerful oligarchs.
Now they can't even feed their frontline troops.
Now, Russia's army can't suck enough.
@@matthewbrown6497 they had numbers and had tech back then, sure, but the political corruption was alive and well even in soviet times, everyone stole everything from everyone, speaking from strategic and tactical perspective they still shoved cannon fodder since ww2. Bothing very different from now except that this time there are many post soviet countries that russia just cant leech on anymore
