The worst part about this test is you when you finish, you’re exhausted and you realize you only ran 2700m
Ben Blanchard it’ll humble you
Oof
For the pacer test, you have to stop and change direction and start immediately again so often, it disrupts your “flow”. If you set a pace and just go for a continuous run, it’s pretty smooth sailing if you can control yourself. So the former would wear you out more as you also need to put energy into sprinting and stopping quickly to turn 180 degrees, from which you have to accelerate again. It’s not about the distance, it’s about the work you put in.
I always time it so that i get to the line at the beep so instead of stoping i just pivot and run the other direction without losing my momentum
And each level is a minute long so you did 2.7km in over 14 minutes which isn't even fast
When a runner is bored while quarantined
**When a sub 4-minute miler casually crushes the pacer test while bored
Hey TRP!
Someone with more subs than the athletes special in chat🤣 👍
I got like 109 a week ago, I used to get to the 138 with no problem but quarantine messed up my endurance. Everyone ran onto the mat to run my last lap with me since I could only do up to 110 but I dropped halfway there
Let’s not forget he went for a 6 mile run before this
True
It was a “warmup”
"On your mark, get ready, start." That is the weirdest combination I've heard
ikr
Normally it’s “On Your Mark, Get set, Go.”
remember that the pacer test was created in 1982 meaning that "On your mark, get ready, start" might have been normal.
@@randomname8220 But we’ve been fricking mean, we’re elitist, we’re flawed as any church
Just to clarify, there are multiple Pacer tests so you might not have taken the same one as spencer. I’m not trying to say your 200 in 7th grade isn’t impressive but you were probably taking a different test.
i dont believe any of these people who say they got over 200
To add on to that, they were also done at a shorter distance than 20m. I remember in middle school doing the pacer test across the width of a basketball court, which is about 50 ft
TrentoNosko yea that’s what i had to do, the first ten felt so long
The one we did back then was 10m
Mine only went up to 94 every year and it would end
Little known fact but I was the pacer test middle school CHAMPION...we gotta run it back this summer
Quentin D same with me at my school
Quentin D same
Same
Me too
I sure hope it does
only real tryhards put spikes on for the pacer test
HAHAHHAHA me on the other hand- sketchers
Serenity lol
Its only cause he’s outside, we did it in the gym
If you do it in the gym it will not work because the floor is waxed, spikes only work on the track or grass and not the inside floor because you will fall if you do it in gym
Shut up
I got 163 in 10th grade. I think playing basketball helps because of the starting and stopping (which is why great runners don’t get very high on this test).
my goodness good job
I'm 49 years old and tried it this morning. Got to 73. This is my new weekly challenge between me and my 7th grade daughter.
Nice way to stay active!
73 is good really good😊
we have to do this Thursday for p.e. I’m really nervous bc every in my class is doubting me and saying I’m not “athletic” it’s making me sad and I hope for 60 ppl are saying I won’t even get 5 and it’s heart-breaking for me, I hope I do good and i got motivation from them so im going to focus of doing great and not focus on them.
Who else saw this on Strava and was confused.
Everyone
@@MrRandomjoey nope not me
Sadly we will never see your boxing match with Zach Levet 🥊
The self advertisement made this video 20 times better
I did 130 back when my mile time was around 4:50, and my friend tied me but he was in like 5:15 shape. I thought you'd go a lot higher than 135 but at the same time it makes sense due to the odd nature of this test. It is a strange because some people are much better at it than others - especially soccer players and those used to doing sprints back and forth.
Really the hardest part about it is the stopping and starting THEN the pace increasing along with that exponentially, it's so unnatural compared to a race where you relax into a fast pace.
BTW for people who claim to have run like 200, you probably ran the 20m audio over the 15m distance (there's a 20m and 15m test with audio adjusted for the distance).
Linkmon99 yeah it seems like soccer players have really good pacers, like my friend who plays would beat me every time up until very recently he got 119 and i used to get only 100 but now my pr is 130
Yo i am a 10 year and i did 101 i am very proud of my self.
Linkmon99 richest roblox player ever I’m a fan!
I have done 53 but that was I while ago
I don't think its the best at measuring mile time, because my PR is 135 and my mile time is 5:56
That’s what I remember about the pacer test, it was fine and then all of a sudden you felt like you were sprinting.
Spence: What got me through the workout was my og crewneck
Also Spence: proceeds to take it off at not even halfway of the workout
dad of the year right here! watches his son literally run back and forth 100+ times 😂😂
Middle school flexing in 2000's: OH YEAH?! WELL I GOT 50 ON THE RUNNING BACK AND FORTH THING SO THERE!
Middle school flexing in 2020: My tiktok got 1000 likes so I'm better than you
bro post more content pleaseee
Yoo Elijah what's up?
That’s not quite true but ok
bruh in 5th grade I ran 87
@@theboard1113 really i only ran a 42 today
I got 100 but on a gym floor and I kept sliding every time I tried to stop
Dude same haha, it’s toxic I got to 100 as well
Im in 10th grade and I run the PACER during lunch sometimes. My record is exactly 100.
Mans really spiked up for the pacer test
A couple of months ago I decided to listen to the pacer test ost, and I found out there are 21 levels and 247 laps in the test after that it canonically ends.
Love your videos man! I've been watching for awhile. You inspired me to start my own channel!
Those beeps give me PTSD
For real
I wish your name was fat kid happy. Cause you should be happy
Not cool to use the term PTSD so loosely. It is a serious condition.
@@levimonk8628 shut the hell up lmao.

The new intro is growing on me 😆
“A little dizzy”???!!! Spencer my migraine kicked in at 30! Great job, mate. Well done. Fun vid.
Love the throwback spikes...i wore those for the steeple chase in college I think-maybe XC...either way, nice work!
Love the video as usual! Can’t wait for my mercy to arrive 💪
5:33 you little sh*t 😂😂😂😂 did it actually? Good advertising Spencer!
Yo Spencer what watch do you have? I need a new running watch but I want one that I can use Strava with aswell
Thanks for this blessing spencer
1000th like, also great job Spencer! What's the difference between the Beep Test and Pacer Test? In Australia we do the Beep Test
*checks his watch while running the pacer test*
Damn dude way to put yourself out there and try something new. Everybody always wonders how elite endurance athletes would do at the beep test, and no offense, but I think this (and Nick Symmonds's vid) shows that you need a more specific kind of training (or at least tactical awareness) to be successful at this. Considering your suboptimal technique this was actually ridiculously good, however with a few changes I wouldn't be surprised if you could bump this up by 50 laps or more:
(1) Biggest change you NEED to make is that you should get to the line right at the beep, NOT BEFORE! You should be doing this for all reps, even in level 1 where you could literally walk 20m to make the beep. The optimal strategy for the beep test is to make this as close to a continuous run as possible. Like when you say that it was starting to get a little hard at 60-70, in no way should that be the case. The energy you save in the early stages will help you in the later stages when it gets faster. The idea that you managed to reach lap 100 with your technique where you get past the line, plant, and wait for the beep is honestly insane to me. You are legit booking it in those reps, no wonder you're tired! If you slow your pace and turn right on the beep, you will save yourself so much energy.
(2) Your turns in laps 100-120 are very slow and inefficient. In a bunch of the turns you slow your approach quite a bit going in. Also related to the previous suggestion, there are a bunch of turns in this range where you plant before starting; this totally kills your momentum and you have to build it back up again which might even take more energy than running between laps does. You are actually turning a lot better after lap 120 when you start to fall behind, specifically because you aren't planting and waiting. If you gauge your speed better, you won't ever have to completely stop, and you can better conserve momentum and subsequently energy.
Seriously though this is crazy impressive for the way you are running this. If you implement these strategies I have no doubt that with your fitness you could get to 135 where you dropped and barely be tired. Also if you do this again it might help to practice your turns. Workouts like 10x300m shuttles on a 25m course were bread and butter for this.
Source: I played soccer in college. I got to around 135 as well but had a 5:25 mile at the time lmao.
Man i really dont think anyone cares about being better at the pacer test lol
Incredible analysis and well said. From my three years of middle school training, tactically I have much of an advantage over Spencer, but fitness wise, with a pr of 5:12 am far behind, but I completely agree. The way in which one approaches this test is half of it, while the next 1/4 is mentally being able to get through the monotony. The last fourth is fitness, and obviously, the sub par techniques were massive setbacks. If the athlete special would allow us to coach him, he could become of the best pacer runners of all time, surpassing middle and high school legends
@@vaughnwallace1178 what about the 4th 1/4?
@Benjamin Fried I 100% agree that the beep test basically has nothing to do with running since you can't get into a stride in 20 meters and at least half of the test is dependent on how efficiently you can turn. However, I think that it is a valid measure of cardiovascular strength and endurance, just a different application that lines up more with sports like soccer or rugby. Same way that you would expect professional cyclists or rowers to be cardio freaks but you wouldn't necessarily expect them to throw down a fast mile.
@Benjamin Fried Okay, maybe I should have rephrased my post by saying that the beep test is "a" measure of cardio strength but not an all encompassing equalizer among different sports. For sure running is a better measure of cardio strength than the beep test, but I wouldn't write off the beep test as a total joke of an athletic endeavor. As far as your example, reports that Beckham and Ronaldo have completed the beep test are unsubstantiated and in my opinion probably totally made up. The top substantiated scores I have seen are at level 17, which puts Seb Coe basically at the top.
Spencer. Watching this vlog took me back 25 years to my time in the Australian Army (Infantry Corp - 49th Battalion) and PT sessions where we did beep test. Test was structured a little differently with each level having 9 sub levels, so level 1.1, 1.2., 1,3 etc. Testing my memory given it was 25 years ago when I was 18 but I think my best on the beep test back then was like 12.4 or 12.5. I think the test recording went up to level 19.9 as the final 20 metre repeat. Tough thing about the test is it is not maintaining a fast pace constantly and requires you to turn 180 degrees every 20m and get back up to ever increasing pace.
Pretty good man! I got 152 my Senior year and so far you've gotten the closest to my score that I've seen!
In 10th grade we did this test in the beginning and end of the semester to see our improvement. The problem was that in August I'd been running all summer so I was in shape. Come December, cross season was over and I was in the middle of the swim season so I did a lot worse.
This is gonna be the video that blows up 😤
Love your spikes!
Great Vid! Might try it tomorrow
I wanna try this now 😂
Love it!!!!
I don't know how, but my state is going to just try to extend the season for track so it will be during the Summer we will see if that works out.🤗
Thank you so much for the idea
Quick tip: Make your own track on an abandoned parking lot or road. Make a wheel out of an old bike tire, measure the circumference, and then measure the distance. It’s lo-tech, but nothing stops the grind. You could just do it with a bike to, but it’s hard to wheel that unless your good at counting.
i want to do the beep test witch app you using
I got 136 about 4 years ago. Literally only by one! If you would have done this on fresh legs though I imagine you would have got close to 150. It looked fun, might have to try it again soon. Nice job Spencer!
The old intro song got me more hype for the video, but ur still a legend
In gym I don't want to get sweaty so i go to like 60 but I really want to see how far I can go! I'm so motivated now 😂
I'm in seventh grade and i'm strait up training for the pacer test. i'm trying to beat my school record officially, which is 125. I got 126 though when I was practicing at home. but that is unofficial. And I know i'm just a middle school child and can't talk shit but i'm gonna get 150 at least on my next pacer if I keep my training up. My best flex on the pacer is probably that I got 102 in the 5th grade. Spencer is completely correct, after 100 it gets really really hard, like your legs are aching, you can't breathe enough, your cramping. I put my arms on my head when I can't breathe enough though, lol advice from a middle schooler.
YO THE NEW INTRO POPPIN
I think a soccer player would be best at this, the start/stop makes it really difficult, and the turning around
*football
*Soccer
Nah they don’t have enough endurance to go past around 120
My experience with the pacer test is way back from middle school. I remember the dozens of people who would start five seconds early, and basically always being the last one out and the teacher was an asshole and would find reasons to remove all the rest of my pacers from after the second to last person dropped out. I think my best was 180 but it was definitely a different and much easier pacer test than what Spencer’s doing here.
Good times...
In Grade 9, we did one in gym class, it was about 20m lengths. I got 116 and got 2nd in the grade, it gets real tough after 80.
Let's go Spencer
Yeeeeee
i need to know, what is the intro song.
Great way to show younger people your account and the sport!
Let’s keep this grind going everyone
Free athlete special t shirt if I film myself beating the score?
i didn't even know there was an end lmao
I did a challenge with my phys ed students- 5 min/mile pace on the treadmill for as long they can go. I might have to try this challenge, and upload myself doing it to see if any of students can beat me! Cool video!
Wish we would do it on grass but nah we gotta do it on a dusty gym floor with no traction
In the UK for year 7 it's 18m, someone in that class got 14 in my school and in year 8 someone got like 12.5, this is divided by ten, into levels, for example the tenth level has 10 stages, 10.1, 10.2 etc
I was curious as to see a sub 4 miler would fare against the pacer test
Great
Blue jean mile soon?
First 💯💪🏿finally
I have got to level 16.9 in the beep test. I'm from New Zealand, so perhaps a different name for the test and not sure of the conversion to the numbers, also didn't do 6 mile warm up before hand.
The conversion from beep test to pacer test for level 16.9 would be 166. An outstanding score!
Hearing the beeps give me PTSD. Might have to try and beat this tho 👀
Ok beast
1000th like :)
Anyone know what watch he has?
wow dat clip gave me headache with all those back and forth! Could you have had the camera on a tripod for your dad's shouler? ;)
haven’t seen those spikes in a while
What sucks is you start feeling pain so early on
People have been bugging me to do this for years. I would be horrible at this. I hate not knowing when the beep is going to come.
wooo
I swear this will be your biggest video yet.
He didn't get the slipping on the gym floor effect tho
What’s the intro music name
I'm a physical education teacher at Soledad High and did 136 a student broke that two years ago doing 148!
I got 130 and decided I was satisfied with the score. A kid who I am faster then got 156, but I know I could have kept pushing with him, and maybe a bit higher. The hardest part was that my shoes treads didnt stick.
There s an app or what?
Your a god
I only have gotten to 90 as a 9th grader, but I hope to reach 110 next year
Whats the intro song🤩
My pr in 7th grade was 119 but then people called me a swear so I don’t sweat anymore
My beast when I was in 8th grade in middle school I got 151 laps in midtop vans and tight jeans
Great video except for the fast forward sounds lol
What was the dude you do pod casts with
Love the podcasts btw
i hit 100 my senior year of high school as a 400m runner so i was pretty pleased with myself
I got 156 the Friday before my track season was supposed to start this year in Saucony Freedoms on a wooden gym floor🤷♂️ at least I broke the only school record I got a chance at breaking this year!
Evan Finger Running your so cool
@@natetobeck3551 ikr
looks like a test a soccer player might beat a distance runner at
I got 164 in 8th grade but our teacher made us do it around a track which made it so much easier then going back and forth all the time.
Last year in 8th grade my pr on the pacer test was 146 (gym floor)
Man I remember when I got 100 finally it was so difficult but I lived it. My friend set the school record in the mile that year than the pacer test. Immediately after some girl came out and crushed the pacer record it was so dumb. Moral of the story is middle school girls are fast as hell
Anyone else get serious Michael Jackson Billie Jean vibes from the last song in the Pacer Test?
I got like 112 freshman year but I was a sprinter then
I was the fitness grand pacer test runner up 3 times in a row.
Yes.
