- Job interview experience of Karan Narang who is currently pursuing Civil Engineering at the Delhi Technological University. Bechtel Corporation came for campus placement recently to hire for the post of Designing Consultant.
Campus Placement process began with the short listing of students on the basis of percentage. The percentage criteria were set at 70%.
The short listing was followed by a written test which consisted technical questions. Important topics to ace this round of campus placement were Strength of Materials, Structures, RCC, Steel, Earth Pressure and Soil.
The next round in the campus placement process was a Group Discussion and the topic was ‘Should a fresher look for money or work experience.’
This was followed by the final round of Job interview which was a combination of both technical and HR job interview.
The person taking the technical job interview mainly focussed on questions that went wrong or were left not attempted in the written test while the HR focussed on the resume, family background, education background. Basically the HR wanted test the fluency and confidence .This is usually the most important criterion in a job interview - Confidence.
The company wanted an employee who had above average knowledge and had an all round personality.
Some suggestions to ace the technical job interview would be to concentrate on topics such as Sheer Force Diagram , Bending Movement Diagrams of fixed beams and cantilever beams .Frames are important for structural analysis .In the Geotechnical Department studying bearing capacity of soil, earth pressure can come in handy. Also steel connections which include rivets and bolts, columns and footings and RCC would suffice.
It is important to be thorough with these topics before companies come for campus placements. This was students will be well prepared for any situation that might arise during the campus placement process.
