- Micrsoft had their 2024 Xbox showcase recently, and their games presentation was fine... but their console presentation? Awful. What are they thinking with these new console variations? I just don't understand Xbox hardware anymore. It's overpriced with a lineup of console variations that's going to confuse parents and grandparents everywhere (not that they haven't already been doing that, but seems like they want to continue doing that).

Can you imagine offer the series s with a 1tb drive for 300, then offer the digital series x at 400, the disc 1tb series x for 500, and special edition at 600? But that would make sense right??

Recently bought a 512gb model used for about 200. It’s easy enough to move games around. Even external ssd dunes aren’t too expensive.

Physical games are a thing of the past. Just because you have a disk you think you have a permanent item that you own? That thing is nothing more than a download ticket and the first thing you’re prompted to do when putting it in is to install it while it also downloads patches to be an actual complete game. Having a disc does not secure your ability to play that game forever. Whether people like it or not we’re moving into the future which is a digital one. It’s not all negative as you can log in and download your games anywhere from any device. They also don’t get scratched or broken. Steam has been doing it for ages and nobody has a problem with that.

You’re also comparing Sales prices to MSRP prices on consoles that haven’t even released yet. If you go by PlayStation MSRP prices, the original was $500, slim is $500, original Digital was $400 and slim is $450. You’re just talking about a bunch of stuff under assumption. The Console game is changing. This just sounds like console war BS. I love my PS5 and Series X, Xbox is still making more net profit is PlayStation. Both companies are just going in different directions.
I particularly liked esthetic of galaxy black edition for Series X, being tempted but there's no real difference even in hardware so price asked makes it not worth it. Also, a series X without disc, doesn't suit well to it.

Only dropping it $50 for disc-less isn't worth it. Would have to be $100 for me to consider losing the option of physical copy sales or buying pre-owned. And that is going to matter a lot more years later when there might not be a digital version of a game available.
The higher storage options could be a bit cheaper, but it is more convenient to have a single larger storage device. It would be a different story if Xbox didn't have us cornered into proprietary storage expansion. That $150 price diff between the new Series X and the discounted base model could buy a good 2TB SSD.

They are there if someone wants them, but if you don't, it doesn't matter to you because you can just go for what you want. It doesn't mean the extra options are good but it also doesn't mean they hinder the balance in a net negative either, as the status quo would be the same regardless.

Microsoft should release a "gamer's variant" of Windows to compete with SteamOS and ChimeraOS (but with better compatability, being Windows--based), making Xbox consoles a *baseline* standard for developers to aim for.
And Microsoft shouldn't look at the Switch as an indication that there's a market for handhelds, they should look at Nintendo's games as an example of how prioritizing *gameplay* *experiences* sells games and consoles.
"No one's buying Xbox's" if that was true they wouldn't be releasing more options. The fact is, with the games coming and the value of Game Pass in regards to their day one releases + COD, the 60%^ of past-gen users yet to jump to next-gen (and some who have but willing to trade) who can't afford high-end gaming PC's will start seeing the X/S consoles as pretty attractive soon. This line-up being expanded is Microsoft clearly preparing for that. Watch this space.

I agree with what you're saying, as I have been an Xbox fan since day, one of the OG... but what keeps happening that is working against them as they keep pushing us hard-core fans away, by not adding options that us original fans will be attracted to?
For me personally, it is all the games that I have that got updates that broke the game that I bought a PS5 when I only have barely 100 games between PS4 and PS4 and on my Xbox one X alone, I have close to 500 and that does not include game pass!

With games file size constantly getting bigger most over 100gb already all consoles should have a minimum of 2tb storage. Especially if you have an all digital version.

For the prices of the consoles now you could get a solid mid range laptop that has the same power. Consoles wont last long if they're over $500usd regularly.

If they don't really care that much about hardware sales, why continue selling Xbox consoles when you can play Xbox games on a PC, phone, tablet, and Smart TV?

Lets not forget to mention that they said the Series X is the most powerful console ever, but they can't allow developers to make games for anything more powerful than the All-Digital diskless midget versions of their consoles. Which makes the games all run worse than they do on PC.

There was another Xbox that came out it was a Xbox One X and it was a special edition Godzilla version and I think there were multiple Xboxes that you could buy there was the Godzilla version there was the Mothra and the King dedora these consoles came out when the Godzilla movie first came out reboot but I think these consoles only came out in Japan so they're really rare to find cuz Xbox did not make a lot of them

Ever since Gold Live and Xbox One, Microsoft has been pivoting to make Xbox a platform and not just a console. They tried to make this platform a central ecosystem for everything entertainment but failed. Now they're focusing on this platform as being a central ecosystem for gaming. Hardware has never been Microsoft's strength and there's a long history of failed or antiquated devices that were at least 10 years before technologies even had a chance to catch up. Their most successful hardware was basically the optical mouse that other companies surpassed them. Infrastructure and software are Microsoft/Xbox strength. The fact that they make a console at all is just a side effect of the current market to have access to the platform. If they had a choice, and Sega was still around as a consumer hardware company, gamers would be anticipating the latest Dreamcast running on Microsoft Windows Core.

I've never seen people have so many problems with having options. What's the big deal? It's just different storage options. Nothing is being "upcharged." You're getting either more storage and being charged for it, or you're not getting a disk drive and NOT getting charged for it. How is a PS5 cheaper? It's the exact same price, just because it's on sale at the moment doesn't make a difference.
