4:08 The PS3 probably overheated because either the CELL or RSX wasnt making proper contact with the chips underneath. I'm guessing the RSX and GPU were the problems because at 7:02 you can see that the RSX gets lifted off of the GPU.
is there a specific way to get the rsx to make proper contact with the chips after a delid? I just assumed that it would be normal for the heat spreader to come off easily like that after a delid, since the glue is gone
@@jrob0021you have to tighten down the clamps on the other top side of the motherboard because they pressure the ihs to make contact with the heat sink
the failure of the ps3 is attributed to its 90nm gpu which is affected by bumpgate, no solutions are permanent. However you can take it to a professional and change it for a 65nm or 40nm gpu from a ps3 slim which would get this more desirable console to a reliable and fully functioning state.

How the hell did DK Oldies survived not being shut down? I would think, many people have tried very hard to sue their asses for bad quality equipment. This worries me, that they are corrupt to the core!

I ordered a backwards compatible PS3 from them recently and had the same issue where the console immediately overheated. The replacement console that they sent me’s fans run at 50-70 percent speed which tells me they either don’t know what they are doing with refurbishment or they don’t check to make sure the console works correctly or both
I had a backwards compatible PS 3 that had problems playing some of my games . They pretty much had the same issues you had , but when i ran them in my PS3 SS they worked just fine. ive heard that some of the older PS 3's have issues running newer games so that might be the issue.
Thank you for this comment. I am seeing that now as well. Later, demanding PS3 titles are having trouble in my fat ps3, not sure there is a solution. Most games and movies work fine.
@bmbeis have someone Frankenstein your PS3. I've used Studio Halabi to change everything in my launch model PS3. Comes with a warranty and the work done is top notch. New 40nm RSX, capacitors, paste, pads, optimizing fan curve and voltages. They do top notch work. If you are in the market for a new PS3, use them as well. They gone through the full workup. You can receive pictures of the work on your particular unit. It may cost the same as DK, but you actually get what is essentially a brand new and improved console. The only thing I can fault Studio Halabi for is their PS3 FAT prices, but for what's provided to guarantee you have a working long lasting bc model, it may be worth it to those interested.
I hope they take the opportunity and take some notes on how to improve their process. Seems like they are trying though which is good, but still extremely high prices that no matter what you do it with it, cant justify that price IMO
honestly, while there are still TONS of improvements left to be made, it IS nice to see them taking a step in the right direction with actually replacing thermal paste and stuff. if only they'd channel this newfound effort into the testing process as well
I'd give them a B- for this haul. Those ps3s are dying left and right no matter who sells them and they at least tried delidding it and it did work just not for long. Broken ps4 controller and bad rollers is pretty unacceptable though. They've improved a lot still.
The reason the PS3 was overheating was most likely because of the CELL CPU. Your theory was probably right about the console coming in for repair due to it overheating, but most of the time on these consoles the CELL is the thing which gets the hottest of them both, if they delidded the CELL then this issue might not have happened, but then again delidding it is quite difficult if you dont know what you're doing compared to how easy the RSX is.
I'll be honest and say I'm not the biggest tech-wise when it comes to consoles but would the CELL CPU also be the cause of it instantly shutting off and not doing the normal "this system is overheating, please let it rest" warning it normally does when it reaches the killswitch temp?
I am happy to keep my original consoles in their boxes. Been PC gaming lately but it’s always nice to play console exclusive games on official hardware. ❤
I used to completley refurbish the BC PS3 systems pretty often for customers as a repair tech. These PS3 systems in particular just aren't worth a professionals time to be 100% with you. If you're a hobbyist that can spend tons and tons of time diagnosing and doing lots of board work then yes they're worth working on. For an actual disgnostic and full refurbish of those consoles it takes upwards of four hours sometimes + the testing period. Which for a shop to dedicate that amount of time for an employee to work on a single console just isn't viable. Most of the RLOD systems or YLOD systems need complete NECTOKIN capacitor replacements, possible re-balled RSX chip and Cell Broadband chip, then typically de-lidding on top of all of that (not always). You can also hook up a syscon tool for diagnostics to find codes to resolve the exact issue that's happenig with YLOD systems. I still work on consoles eight hours a day but my shop no longer accepts BC PS3 systems unless it's bluray drive, HDD, or something easy. It's just a matter of how I can replace 3-4 HDMI's in PS5 systems in the time I could refurb a single BC PS3 lol. Just not worth it, so it makes sense that DK just does the most basic like one hour to an hour and a half job and gets it out quick. Unfortuante.
Hey Jacob, it's your friendly console modder here. I'm here to inform you that the Playstation 3's fan speed is controlled by the system controller on a stock console. Sony actually programmed the system to lower the maximum fan speed from its actual capability probably to make the console not sound like a jet engine. The only way to unlock 100% fan speed is to softmod your console, preferably with a custom firmware. Also, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to put the heat spreader back on the GPU before putting the console back together, because the chip is designed with the heat spreader in mind, unlike the phat 360 that doesn't have a heat spreader on either chip.
I just wish companies like these would be open and honest with the people. Are they cleaning the consoles up more? Yes. However, why are they still sending broken or iffy consoles, even in acceptable condition? They’re a small business more so than anything, so why not communicate? The people they hire must not do thorough checks every time like they should. Just sucks man.
Yep these videos don't lie....Got a good condition Xbox 360 128GB from them recently out of curiosity.... The disc drive did not work and the memory port doors were missing when I tried to connect the OEM controller it couldn't connect either as if it wasn't even recognizing it. I am returning it right away! Don't buy from them folks it's not worth it!
I bought a refurbished game boy color from them last December and it's actually in surprisingly good condition (although I bought the "acceptable" version for like 80 bucks), it's clean and works just fine. I thought they reformed based on the comments on youtube or maybe I am just lucky
The PS3 i believe is suffering from the age old issue with the 90nm RSX video chip, i wouldn't obviously trust them to perform "Frankenstein mods" on the BC units but they at least could've stress tested it before sending out!
To be fair every fat PS3 I've bought from preowned retailers have always died on me, the last PS3 I bought from CEX in the UK came with the yellow light of death. The console would crash on start-up first before turning off.
Well I bought a SNES from them back in 2019 before they blew up and was happy. Just bought a refurbished white ps2 slim and so far everything is good. I do want to take a look inside but at the same time don’t fix something that isn’t broken. Just in case something breaks, I do have that warranty
I bought 7 for parts handhelds from them, and they agreed to include extras. The package arrived with half of the extras missing. Would not buy from them again. Btw, most of the consoles worked fine, they didn't bother to clean them.
I was at comic con a number of years ago and i saw joey from dkoldies there. We got to talking and he invited me up to his hotel room for a party. When I got there, he was wearing only leather short shorts and there was a nude gentleman tied up with an Xbox 360 controller. I left
The Xbox 360 has the matte white DVD tray, but with HDMI, and doesn't say "Arcade" on the back, so should be... refurbished "Core System" model with Zephyr motherboard? Usually pretty reliable!
A few years ago I bought 2 Xbox ones with non functioning disc drives opened the disc drives up one I couldn't see the issue so just cleaned it (couldn't really see any dust inside the disc drive) and put it back together it worked flawlessly and is still working today and the other one the reason for it not work was there was coins that had been put into the disc drive got them out cleaned it and that one is also still working
Maybe ordering from Dkoldies can be hit or miss? I bought a Sega Genesis and acouple games for it and I haven't had issues since. The only thing that sucks were the controllers that came with it, both brand new but were 3rd party and buttons fall apart easy. I had to buy some official Sega Genesis controllers from another place.
Now they they are actually attempting it and replacing thermal paste, that's actually enough for me. Because they have good customer service and they replace stuff if there's issues. So I'm pretty impressed to be honest.
Thanks! I am/was putting q shopping cart ready for purchase. After reading some of yalls comments, I have some of the same concerns. Guess I'll purchase my items else where.
I still would not buy from DK Oldies. If I buy a refurb system, I expect it to work full stop. Otherwise, just buying untested or from eBay would render the same results as getting that PS4 you got. This is setting aside the acceptable condition of the visuals. That is different. They also add waaaay too much thermal paste to the point they're prob insulating the heat more than they dissipate it. But the PS3 and PS4 show signs of not testing the OVERALL functionality of what they ship out
Do you think that they are cleaning because of right to repair or just out of fear for their reputation. Also if you keep testing DKOldies stuff and shipping it to the same address that they log it knowing its you? Just a thought, Love you vids :)
A few years ago I sold an N64 + controllers and games to DK Oldies. I thought they gave a fair price and made the process simple. A few weeks ago I tried selling some NES games. They gave a real lowball price. I ended up selling to eStarLand, who offered much more. I still think that the DK Oldies hate is overblown, but shoutout to eStarLand!
I wonder if they know who they're selling it too or if jacob used a different name and address. If i did this i would only order from them in a way they wouldnt know it was me. Bc at this point they're gonna send him "better" junk. Or try at least
Been a while since the last DKOldies video and it seems like DKOldies has made some improvements, actually going into the consoles to refurbish them lately and selling official controllers. It's too bad that PS3 overheated.
Awesome vid as always man. It just suck bc I personally don’t want to hate DKoldies but it obvious the people buying these consoles care more than they do. That almighty dollar fucks everything up
I'll be honest, I really want one of those first PS3's, but it seems to hard to find one that actually works reliably, definitely not worth it, in my opinion
Jacob R is the type of guy to say "let's see if it's the 80 GB console" see that it's 74GB and be like "so guys as you can see we didn't get the 80 GB console*
Controller battery probably fully died on the ps4 I have to replace mine after like 5 years now cause not keeping a charge in two of them and the third controller no longer charges at all but yea one fully working console is a good improvement sadly still a failing score
Nice to see that there improving. I’ve only ever bought games from them and never a console. Was always worried cause I’ve watched all of your videos lol. But maybe now I might give it a try
It's this type of investigation that helps many save money and not just jump to go buy from overly saturated advertising. Thank you for all you do! Staying away from DK Oldies.
Not going to lie I wouldn’t blame dkoldies for the ps3 overheating as that is the 90nm RSX being mostly unreliable, really what would keep it running somewhat longer is maybe a reball or actually modding the ps3 for manual fan control so the GPU(RSX never GOES above 98 degrees Celsius)
The reason that PS3 probably still overheats is because they replaced the top thermal paste, but not the bottom thermal paste. Nobody ever replaces the bottom thermal paste it unfortunately, if you have overheating issues like this, it’s most likely the cause even all the videos that I find on RUclips show only replacing the top thermal paste, but there is a thermal paste barrier underneath as well.
Just a note! Most people know this by now but a lot of places sell fake OEM looking ps4 controllers and alot look super legit and feel great. The issues appear when u start clicking sound with the sticks and the triggers. They are always aligned properly on OEM controllers and you never click slip on an r3 of l3 and the triggers don't grind. On the fakes they do either or both and sometimes even the buttons aren't perfectly straight. I think that controller is fake.
The last of us is crazy when it comes to pushing the PS3 that I wouldnt ever reccomend using a Backwards Compatible unit of any kind as most of them had sub par cooling and one of the reasons sony later ditched the backwards compatible systems.
I mean, good for them for actually making the changes that everyone wanted them to to make them a more reputable reseller, but there's obviously still some glaring oversight in their process. They probably booted up the ps3, it worked, didn't try a game in it otherwise the issue would pick up quickly. The original ps3 consoles had an overheating issue from what I remember so that extra bit of effort would have gone a long way. As for the ps4, they obviously don't test the controllers very much, the back sticker was still in tact so they didn't even open it which they would have done if they'd have tested it, and a quick wipe of the console while putting in the thermal paste would have been fine. Feels like they just sort of cut corners in really weird places and it seems to have backfired on them slightly. They don't so much seem a scam anymore as much as they are just a business with some oversights in their practices, better but still not quite there.
Fun Fact: Sometimes those packing peanuts are biodegradable, they will dissolve instantly in water and the material left over is safe for the environment. Not all packing peanuts are like this, but worth a shot to see since they’re such a hassle to clean up!
This isn't a bad step for them at all, not perfect "granted you can't save single system out there". However they seem to be doing far better job than what they where doing last year. They still need to do some stress test on these systems before sending out, but it's a step in right direction.
I’m wondering if they forgot to replace the ribbon cable inside the PS4 controller that leads to the USB port, either that or they replaced the battery and somehow forgot to plug the new one in?
Its truly sad that despite 2 out of 3 worked, and a broken controller AND a system that still has disc drive issues, this is a "success" for DKOldies. Still not giving them my business, in fact, since their controversy Ive been refushing consoles and systems myself and selling them on Mercari and EBay and have had good business cause unlike DKOldies, I clean and refurbish everything on my systems😅 I also have competitive pricing too lol.
last of us worked perfectly on my ps3. i never experienced any issues in my playthrough that were super noticeable. edit: i purchase my ps3 from ebay, i've owned it since 2013 and it still works apart from the WiFi/Bluetooth chipset has died and that happened recently.
I remember when my old PS4 had a disc drive issue like that you showed, I had to unplug all the cords from the PS4 and leave it alone for 10 to 20 secs and plug everything back in also turned it on and that worked.
Heeey, nice vid!! Not sure if anyone said anything about it, but usually the backwards compatible ps3s have a chronic dying RSX chip problem, a good solution is either swapping it from the original 90nm chip to a 65nm chip (if I’m not mistaken). Btw great video!!
For the PS4 and the controllers not connecting mine does the same. I still have my day 1 PS4 still in great condition, the fans are not even noisy and never overheats. It does get used a lot in the hot summer days in my summer home. The only issue is that the controllers lose sync once being off for the winter. Every spring I have to reconnect them and even using several cables it’s so hard to connect them. I thought it was the USB but it’s not. It’s almost like it’s an operating system software issue. As long as I do manage to get one controller connected then the second one is easier to connect because you can connect it over Bluetooth and not having to be plugged in but of course you need at least one working controller to even get into the settings to connect the other one.
I don't see why everyone is automaticly assuming DKOldies are the ones that opened and cleaned out that first PS3. I'd say it's more likely it started overheating so the original owner opened it and cleaned it trying to fix it, and when that didn't work, sold it, and DKOldies just passed it on.
Selling products at a premium price point demands the said product should be in perfect working condition. Simple as that. So many people call them out and they still fail regularly so clearly they only care about money and nothing else.

I bought a WII U from them which is still good after a year (knock on wood) but have stopped buying from them ever since and have made quite a few retro console purchases since I am now a collector, I usually go ebay or local shops now. I figure my WII U was a lucky fluke that was probably barely touched prior to them receiving it.
Lucky you! Thanks for sharing
I will never buy from them I just watch DKoldies videos because it's funny the way they do things by sending systems with off brand controllers and very expensive triple prices on games systems etc 😂😂
@@jrob0021 Tbh I'm not really sure... I have never done delids before, but my guess is that it might need some pressure or new glue.
the failure of the ps3 is attributed to its 90nm gpu which is affected by bumpgate, no solutions are permanent. However you can take it to a professional and change it for a 65nm or 40nm gpu from a ps3 slim which would get this more desirable console to a reliable and fully functioning state.
@@Bren-tech couldnt he delid the cpu too? to make the height difference even out? might be enough, but still crazy dko didnt noticed it and greenlit it (doubt they delidded it by the time it would take, or if so why only delid the rsx and not the cell cpu? so many questions & still halfassed job. guessing it was rather someone elses, assuming he failed and knew it overheats so he sold it to them, ez money)
How the hell did DK Oldies survived not being shut down? I would think, many people have tried very hard to sue their asses for bad quality equipment. This worries me, that they are corrupt to the core!
17:53 i noticed that people who suffered from jet issue on ps4, where the users that had their ps4 full of dust inside 😂. I never had that issue with any of my ps4.
Same here I keep mine clean and it still runs 0 issues to this day , it even ran cyber punk at launch when everyone else had issues I was playing it just fine 🤷♂️
@@clayglenn6513 same, lol
That's really too bad they are still selling broken junk. Thanks for taking one for the team!
@Medicine_Man1Just modify a ps2.
Now that Rich from Reviewtechusa isn’t making videos anymore and is only streaming now , your the last lot torch for the DKOldies investigations , I salute you !
I ordered a backwards compatible PS3 from them recently and had the same issue where the console immediately overheated. The replacement console that they sent me’s fans run at 50-70 percent speed which tells me they either don’t know what they are doing with refurbishment or they don’t check to make sure the console works correctly or both
Interesting..
DKOldies probably cleaned it because they know Jacob was gonna get them lmao!
I hope they take the opportunity and take some notes on how to improve their process. Seems like they are trying though which is good, but still extremely high prices that no matter what you do it with it, cant justify that price IMO
honestly, while there are still TONS of improvements left to be made, it IS nice to see them taking a step in the right direction with actually replacing thermal paste and stuff.
if only they'd channel this newfound effort into the testing process as well
Moral of the story is still.......don't buy from DK oldies.
Carrying a company on your shoulders, mad respect
I'd give them a B- for this haul. Those ps3s are dying left and right no matter who sells them and they at least tried delidding it and it did work just not for long. Broken ps4 controller and bad rollers is pretty unacceptable though. They've improved a lot still.
Yeah tbh I'm suprirsed they're even selling the OG PS3s. They're destined to die
@@jrob0021 there's a frankenstein mod you can do to save BC PS3s but it's really expensive
@@jrob0021my 60gb eventually died :(

De-lidding a ps3 to replace the thermal paste is no easy task. You can easily break the pins if you aren’t super careful.
I’d never buy from them but if I did, for the prices I would expect the console to be like how it was when it was first bought.
I can't be the only one that initially thought he found a Ramen noodle in the box. 😅
Hey man, It's not perfect, but progress is progress. Honestly I definitely hope they improve.
Seeing DKOldies refurbishing consoles is a jumpscare.
A DKoldies ad interrupted this video just now 😂😂😂
I just wish companies like these would be open and honest with the people.
Handhelds in general are typically easier to “refurbish” imo
You only had to pay $80?!
@@johnnyknadler1157 ye it was during the holiday season and it's the acceptable ver.

@@sixskiis never bought from them, don’t care about them aside from they have bad business practice. The content just gets old at some point.
I thought this was an April Fool’s video when I saw that the PS3 was cleaned
What is wrong with this society? How is a crooked company like this staying in business?
Thanks! I am/was putting q shopping cart ready for purchase. After reading some of yalls comments, I have some of the same concerns. Guess I'll purchase my items else where.
The improvement is there, they just seem to lack consistency
Idk but when the faceplate came off so easily at 10:51 i thought it was funny, my humor is broken 😂
That picture of Joey is gonna haunt my dreams.
Joey already haunts my dreams
Had that issue with my own PS4 controller, just let it charge for a bit then it would work fine. Battery must of just completely died in storage
Dkoldies is the console variant of ArtesianBuilds
Change my mind
I think that possibly gay guy who works with Joey wears silly bands all the time like. So that makes sense it would it be in the box ig? 😂
Whose to say he’s using his actual name on the shipping address.
I just thought that it was the address because in the past he used fake names
True. They all overheat eventually sadly. Cursed.
Awesome vid as always man. It just suck bc I personally don’t want to hate DKoldies but it obvious the people buying these consoles care more than they do. That almighty dollar fucks everything up
They have improved there cleaning process, but still sending out consoles that are basically bricked is not great.
That Xbox 360 is so out of character from DKo, I mean, a refurbished console from them?!
Am I the only that checked their controller when the pop up that the battery was low was in the video?
why did you not share the prices??
I'll be honest, I really want one of those first PS3's, but it seems to hard to find one that actually works reliably, definitely not worth it, in my opinion

I WOULD blame them since they specifically call out refurbishing the console. So bad on them.
With Rich giving up RUclips we look to you Jacob for all of our future DKOldies content!
Good info!
Nice to see DKO living up to their word now, guess all that hassle from before was worth it
Wow. I don’t miss that PS3 fan sound. Such a jet engine.
This isn't a bad step for them at all, not perfect "granted you can't save single system out there". However they seem to be doing far better job than what they where doing last year. They still need to do some stress test on these systems before sending out, but it's a step in right direction.
Definitely in the right direction, but honestly pretty bad that 2 out of 3 consoles had pretty significant issues lol
You're telling me, selling a 200 dollar ps3 that overhaetas within 5 minutes is not a bad step at all? What a clown
@@MidniteMeatBusI think he was talking about the cleaning part
This is the 1,374th chance they’ve gotten from you.
Still not giving them my business, in fact, since their controversy Ive been refushing consoles and systems myself and selling them on Mercari and EBay and have had good business cause unlike DKOldies, I clean and refurbish everything on my systems😅 I also have competitive pricing too lol.
last of us worked perfectly on my ps3. i never experienced any issues in my playthrough that were super noticeable.
edit:
i purchase my ps3 from ebay, i've owned it since 2013 and it still works apart from the WiFi/Bluetooth chipset has died and that happened recently.
I remember when my old PS4 had a disc drive issue like that you showed, I had to unplug all the cords from the PS4 and leave it alone for 10 to 20 secs and plug everything back in also turned it on and that worked.
"Since your order got picked to be filmed, I'll throw in a broken silly band"
The Last Of Us used the entire power of the PS3 so if the cooling system isn’t up to par that thing will overheat with that game pretty quick.
Im never buying anything from DKOLDIES ever again my backward compatible ps3 was filty and they gave that cheap 3rd party controller
