  • Taiwan recently ordered 108 M1A2T Abrams tanks from United States, the first batch of 18 tanks should be delivered by the end of the next year and the delivery should be finalized by the end of 2026. Now, this begs the question, would the M1A2T be able to stand up to the Chinese tanks, in case, you know, China invades.

    The issue with Taiwanese military purchase program right now is that no major powers other than the US is willing to sell a modern offensive system to them, due to potential political/economic backlash from China. As a result the Americans pretty much charge whatever they want. The latest example is the $2.5 billion for 30 AH-64E + ammunitions. This is more than twice what Boeing charges for the US army, so the high price tag for the Abrams really does not say much about how watered down the export version would be.

    I think one thing we have to consider is that Taiwan's planned usage for their tanks is to utilize them as a counter force during a theoretical invasion attempt by China, massing up a distance from landing points and then counter attacking to try to throw the Chinese back into the sea. Against initial amphibious forces, the M60s should still be effective for that. Once a larger landing area is secured and more army forces arrive, those tanks would disperse as much as they can with the infantry, as Taiwan's terrain is not suitable for mobile warfare and they will do more good as dispersed fire support, moved forward for ambushes on tanks trying to go around the urban areas.

When only looking at Chinese and Taiwanese forces, it is theoretically possible that China could conduct this sort of long campaign and handily win, however they don't have that time because of the US. They need to be able to quickly gain air and sea superiority and land troops to secure the island, otherwise, the Americans could reinforce Taiwan and put the air and naval superiority in question. Several things you miss from the Chinese side:
    1, The original ZTZ-99 has a 1200 hp engine while the ZTZ-99A has a 1500hp engine. ZTZ-99A is not a "normal upgrade" from ZTZ-99, its turret and hull got completely redesigned which is much bigger in size.
    2, The ZTZ-99 and ZTZ-99A actually have soft-kill APS. There are laser receivers around the tank. When enemy tank measuring distance using laser rangefinder, it can actually calculate the relative angle of the laser signal and shoot back a beam of laser jamming up the enemy rangefinder. Official documents also mentioned that the system can set to output a higher energy laser to burn the optic sensors of the rangefinder. Without the rangefinder the fire control system is disabled.

The ability to predict enemy approach routes and strategically place your forces is a huge force multiplier. Tack that on to the fact that American tanks are designed pretty specifically for a defensive role (Russia rolling into NATO), and I would suspect the American tanks would put up a better fight than the paper stats would suggest. "training can be improved to match the most well trained units and personnel" Only if your officer cadres possess doctrinal experience from which to draw on for training. Training is more than push-ups, jumping-jacks, and practicing your aim. It's experience being passed down from one officer generation to the next being imparted onto the service-level men, knowing the subtle battlefield tricks and conditions that will pop up that can only be predicted by some kind of experience the officer cadres have passed on.
      The Chinese do not have that. The Russians are the only ones they can draw knowledge from, and given how they're performing in Ukraine, I'm not very certain China will learn anything positive from them.

It could also use different types of fuels like military-grade jet fuel and diesel.

    According to reports, the tank has composite 850 mm armor and is equipped with a digital battlefield management system that ensures combat efficiency. It uses an AGT-1500 gas turbine engine that can generate 1500 horsepower, giving it the ability to rush onto the battlefield with no problem.

      3: Did you honestly just say the 125-3 can penetrate 1 kilometer of armor...? I'm gonna guess you meant 1000mm of armor, which is not 1km by the way. The 125-3 can penetrate 1000mm of armor at about 2,000 meters, IF it impacts at 0 degrees to the armor point. That never happens except in test conditions; that's basically the "perfect scenario" result. The likelihood in combat scenarios is at least 3-5 degrees of angle, with every degree of angle losing roughly 70cm of penetrative power.
      4: The upcoming XM-1147 AMP is capable of HEAT penetration of up to 1400mm, with upgrade options packing enough power to perform at least 1500mm of HEAT penetration coming in 2028.

      ZBD-05 would indeed be the tip of the PLA marine spears (as well as Type-96B transported on hovercrafts). HOWEVER, the ZBD-05 won't get a chance to face the M1A2Ts, because the M1A2ts would be stationed around Taipei. When hostility resumes. they'll be stuck in and around Taipei.
      Any large convoys of tanks re-deploying would be picked off by PLA drones and fighters.
      Type-99As would definitely be brought in on the second wave, through RO/RO (roll on roll off) ships, via temporary mulberry harbors.
      The Type-99A would face the M1A2t, as the heavy combined arms brigades of the PLA pushes towards Taipei, so the M1A2Ts are sort of a last stand weapon.

      You need to look into RO/RO and the vast amount of logistics it can move. When war starts, China would have total air supremacy. when under that conditions, Taiwanese troops cannot in any shape or form defend the beaches, because they'll be eliminated by fighters, bombers and drones. not to mention Chinese rocket artillery can reach most of the island.
      So they can only retreat into the urban centers and fight it out there, but when war gets to the urban stage, the biggest loser are the civilians. and it'll be just a matter of time until PLA pacifies all resistance.

While AK excels at being mass produced. Same thing with Abrams vs Txx. Abrams fits the specs ops(if there are any) more than Txx. But not to say Txx can't be mod to run specs ops. The Leopard 2 would not really change anything about the situation tho. Taiwan would still be inferior in every way. There is only so much you can do about it. Taiwan is only a small island, and although it already has of the most powerful Militaries in the world (Top20) and one of the biggest Army in the world (2 Million) but against China which is in the Top 3? No Chance.

      @@tomk3732 Ummm... what? As far as I know Taiwan already declared independence since over 70 years ago (1949). That's why we call it Taiwan in the first place, right?
      The Leopard 2A6 or 2A7 would be a slightly better export tank, but not that much better to make an actual difference. The Leoaprd 2 is overall very equal in most terms to the M1A2 Abrams. And in the end, both tanks will be destroyed by China's new Top-attack missile "Red Arrow HJ-12" anyway (which is a copy of the famous Javelin Top-attack missile). So the tank would need some APS that can intercept Top-attack missiles, because any tank without such APS will be completely uselless on the modern battlefield anyway.
      But don't worry, China is not gonna invade or attack Taiwan, it's just not worth it. Because it would be too much costly for China to attack it. Even though Taiwan is only a very small island, but as I already said, it is still one of the most powerful militaries in the world with one of the biggest army in the world, which means that China would have to sacrifice a lot of its military arsenal just to occupy this little island. And then there is of course the USA which would probably do something about it too. So no, it's just not worth it.

    • @tomk3732
      @tomk3732 3 года назад +2

      @@xAlexTobiasxB Taiwan is not independent nation de juro, it is independent de facto. If it was de juro there would be embassies in it from other countries - US only has "trade mission". This is why the talk of independence of Taiwan comes in and out occasionally & is used to "irritate" China. Notice almost no country recognizes Taiwan as independent. If Taiwan wants to force a war all it has to do is declare independence from mainland. China would probably try economic means first but later on war would be inevitable, even at great cost to China.
      Spike missile is better then Javelin. Leo 2A7 can easily destroy Abrams from Taiwan but Taiwan's Abrams has almost zero chance of taking out Leo2 A7 armor from the front unless it gets a weak spot. Leo also has far better sensors and other equipment. It is not a downgraded monkey model for export. For 12m USD per unit Taiwan could have gotten much better tank. Heck fully loaded T-90 is far and wide much better tank then what Taiwan is getting. And its only half the $. Heck you could get T90 with Israeli active defense system for 1/2 the price. But no weapon purchase is non political.
      If Taiwan plays the ball any invasion in the next 20 years looks very unlikely. If Taiwan does not play the ball it will be part of Chania ruled by mainland in tops 30 years against its will.

    • @xAlexTobiasxB
      @xAlexTobiasxB 3 года назад +1

      @@tomk3732 Again, Taiwan already declared "full" Independence in 1949. Even if most other countries don't want to recognize Taiwans Independence, doesn't change the fact that Taiwan is already de facto a fully independent and self-sufficient state with its own political government system and can make its own rules and has its own police force and has its own independent jury and has its own Army to protect the island country against any outside threat. Which makes Taiwan a 100% fully indepenedent country as much as independence goes. I mean, that is why we are talking on a video about Taiwan receiving American Abrams tanks right? Because Taiwan wouldn't even get American Abrams tanks in the first palce if it wasn't independent, right?
      There are some Taiwanese embassies in other countries, but only in very poor and weak countries (mostly Southern America which have no big value in the world anyway). Yeah it sucks that most other nations around the world don't want to recognize Taiwan as independent state, but it still doesn't change the fact that Taiwan is de facto a fully independent state anyway.
      And it is highly unlikely that China would attack Taiwan. You can say it all you want, but it won't happen. Only in your fantasy maybe. So keep on dreaming.
      The Leopard 2A6 /A7 has only slightly better front armor, but that doesn't mean anything if a top-attack missiles hits the weak roof of the turrrt which has no armor whatsoever. Any tank that doesn't have APS is useless on the modern battlefield anyway, because top-attack missiles make armor useless.
