Why I want to go back to KYUSHU, Japan

- Things to do in Kyushu, the southern-most of Japan's main island, full of volcanic activity, hot springs and interesting places to visit - and cute fruit bus stops!
I really enjoyed visiting Kyushu when I stayed in Fukuoka and went on day trips around the island. But there was lots I missed! With the new branch of the shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagasaki opening late 2022, it's a great time to go. This video's a round-up of ideas for your second/third/fourth Japan trip, including Nagasaki, Shimabara (City of Swimming Carp), Huis Ten Bosch, Kumamoto (for Kumamon hunting!), Yutoku Inari Shrine, Yufuin near Beppu, Mount Aso, the Unzen Hells and Mount Unzen, another active volcano in Japan.

I've only been to Japan once, and my friend was living in Fukuoka. I was glad that got me to go to a 2nd city, rather than just Tokyo. It really made my trip feel more well-rounded.
Absolutely - the rest of Japan is completely different from Tokyo so I'm glad you got to see more of it! It must have been good having a friend who knows all the best local places to go as well.
Your guidebook has added Kyushu to my travel plan for Japan, great to see this video! Kagoshima minus the dust looks perfect for that "I've been travelling photo"
Ooh good choice! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Luckily I didn't have any trouble with the volcanic ash in Kagoshima, although you can see it in the gutters. It can be a problem for locals though if they try and dry washing outside.
I just want to back , never mind visit Kyushu! Just an hour on the Yamanote line would be bliss!
Me too!! Maybe with some snacks from the konbini...
It would be the most inexpensive way to spend and enjoy "An hour of Tokyo" :P
I can here the women’s voice now, announcing the next station. 🤗
Thank you for your video ! It is great to see the maps and see all the volcanos of Kyushu ! I will definitely add it to my trip !
I love Kyushu! Hope I can go back there one day, there are so many interesting places.
We are planning on returning and starting out tour from Kumamoto, it looks like a great base for travelling out from.
We were also going to take the ferry to Busan fro Fukoaka.
Good to know about the boat trip from Kumamoto, you're right, boat trips are always good, feels like such a novelty these days.
Sounds like a great plan! And good idea to get the ferry to Busan - I'd love to visit South Korea one day too!
Wife is from Munakata near Fukuoka. First visit went to Kumamoto then to Mt. Aso--Mt. Aso is my favorite most fascinating place in Kyushu. Have been there 3 times and am always ready to go back. But am always ready to go back to Kyushu.
It's a lovely place! I'll be going back there soon this year!
Danke für Dein tolles und interessantes Video
Bitte schoen! :-)
Just loved the guide book, planning to go to japan again next year depending on how everything goes
Aww thank you so much! Fingers crossed - I'm waiting to see what happens too.
I loved this video and visited many of the same areas and attractions.
The Yanagawa canals are worth seeing also😃 and the fresh eel (unagi) is delicious!
Glad you enjoyed Kyushu too! Yes, I went to Yanagawa together with Dazaifu on a day trip from Fukuoka. So beautiful! 😍
Thanks so much for this video Amy. We're planning to go to Kyushu on our next trip, and the Yufuin no Mori train and Kumamon sculpture park are both definitely on our 'to do' list now!
They both look amazing! Can't wait to go back to Kyushu!!
Hi Amy, I can't wait till I can get back to Japan. I am thinking of staying in Kyushu for about a month. I was really looking at Kumamoto as my base. There is something that is really mystical about Kumamoto for me. I can't put my finger on it but hey, who really care why...I just wanna go!! happy travels Amy!
Excellent plan! If Kumamoto's the place you want to go then that's the right place to stay in! All these places look so interesting and in a month you'll be able to see so much.
I had not heard about the Nagasaki extension, but that is great news.
I hope to include Kyushu in my next trip (2023?) so this video is very helpful. Wonderful work, as always! Watching your JaPlanning videos is always good fun. Meanwhile, I try to get out for daily walks to get in my JaPracticing ... because those trips do require a lot of walking!
Fantastic - the new line should definitely be up and running for your trip! Good idea getting the practice in - hehe, we always joke about getting in training too!! Can't believe how much you end up walking on a trip!
was in kumamoto 2 weeks before the earthquake, it truly is a lovely place with some amazing places to visit and a particuly great garden that shows the tokaido rd complete with a mini mt fuji . highly recommended to go to, love your work
Sounds good ! I hope I can go there one day! You were lucky with your timing to miss the earthquake.
I used to live in Fukuoka (right before Covid) I'm going back this May with my boyfriend. I'm excited to show him where I used to live. We're also going to Beppu which I always want to go to while living there. But Covid cut my travel plans short
It'll be fun showing him your fav places! That must have been a lovely place to live. I loved Beppu - the different hells are so interesting and unusual.
I am so excited to go to Fukuoka on my next trip!!!!
Yay! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Wow ! 👀
Your information is very quick ! 😲
You know well as you catch an info with the new Shinkansen opening ! 😂
I like Kyushu so much !😌
Because, there are much beautiful scenery points and yummy gourmet ! 🤤
And, much fantastic trains ! 😍
I'm looking forward to the new shinkansen! Hope I can go back to Kyushu one day!

Thank you for reply.🙇
I hope so too !🙏
I reccomend taking the overnight ferry from Osaka to Beppu. It was a great experience. There are also ferry routes that go to Kitakyushu, Miyazaki, and Shibushi.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Love all of the details
Thanks! I enjoy making these videos as it's like planning an imaginary (future!) trip.
Awesome job Amy .
Thanks!!
Noproblem.
I remember Nagasaki as a great place to walk around - lots of hills though - and with a very relaxed atmosphere. Absolutely worth a visit. I wonder how much the new shinkansen will change tourism as it felt a bit isolated before.
So tempted to add to my trip.
So far I have to go to osaka Nintendo World.
But after watching this I'm very tempted.
I forsee many more trips ahead
Hehe I know that problem!! I flew into Fukuoka for Kyushu, then took the bullet train up to Osaka, then Tokyo over two weeks, so it's do-able!
There's also Saga prefecture which has... zombie idols... definitely! Maybe (?) The one thing I do know for sure is they have yakitori!
If you are looking for Off-beaten paths or want to avoid Tourist traps, and can speak the basic "tourism language" in Japanese, as a local person of the country I recommend visiting remote islands.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Got%C5%8D_Islands
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakushima
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amami_%C5%8Cshima
The above three examples are the typical remote islands of Kyushu as travel destinations that Japanese people think of. (I mean, those are relatively convenient to get there (than other small and minor islands), and there are accommodations for travelers as well.)
I've been planning to visit Kyushu on my next trip to Japan. I've only been to Honshu before so I want to see some of the other islands.
Enjoy!! I hope this helped give you some more ideas! :-)
Kumamoto is the place for me. This video shows the effect of the earthquake on a SONY Semiconductor facility.
Hope I can make it there one day!
Very interesting to see that you can visit many of Europe's top attractions in Japan^^ It's just that the originals are much closer if you're living in Europe.
Yes - that makes me less inclined to visit them in Japan... even though most of the time I haven't visited the real ones in Europe yet either!
Fascinating!
So many interesting places in Kyushu!
@@cakeswithfaces yes, after watching your videos, I definitely want to visit Japan. Thank you!
@@Murph110 Hope you can make it there one day! 🙂
Yay, Kyushu! That's my plan for autumn in 2022 as well.
I'm planning 3-4 days of Kyoto/Osaka and the area around it (already been there, but there are still a few more things I wanna see) and at least 10 days in Kyushu with Beppu, Fukuoka and I have yet to plan which other places, maybe some of the things you mentioned here :D
Ooh good plan! Hope this gave you some extra ideas! 100% recommend Beppu, so different and unusual.
Quite late to watch this video myself. Always fun to see them though ^_^
Had my second Vaccine 2 weeks ago so I should be fine now. All I need to do now is wait until Japan opens it's borders again to the Netherlands. As it stands they closed them at least for Dutch citizens. I was in Kumamoto and Beppu in 2019 myself. Had a good time there. Indeed a shame that the earthquake damaged the castle, but I did visit the palace vicinity, just the not castle insides as those were being renovated/repaired.
Congratulations on being fulled vaccinated! I think Japan's still closed to almost all countries so you're not alone! Hope I can visit Kumamoto one day!
I am Japanese but I never been Kyushu yet.😭
I wanna go see Kumamon so bad.😭😭😭
I hope you can make it there one day! It's always the way with the country you live in - I haven't visited a lot of attractions in London, or even been to Scotland!
on my trip to japan trip 2018 I was tokyo kyoto and osaka for 16 days and when I came back to montreal lots of my japanese friends kept telling me oh man you should have visited Hokkaido and some parts of Kyushu too and Okinawa too.
Always more places to visit, that's the trouble with Japan (and the beauty of it too!!)
i'm going to kyushu soon and as a dutch person i can't wait to go to huis ten bosch 😂
It'll be interesting to see what you think of it! Like seeing the UK section of Epcot at Disney World for me! :-)
I can't recommend yufuin and yufuin no mori denchan enough...
As for Huis Ten Bouch, yea, it wasn't that good... their theming went south after H.I.S (travel agency) bought the park
And wow! i had no idea Kyushu had it's own inari shrine.
Also, I highly recommend Team Labo's forest of the gods exhibit (and ryokan) in Saga...
Thanks
TeamLab's work is amazing, I enjoyed Borderless in Tokyo so much. Yufuin will definitely need to be on my next Kyushu itinerary then!!
I've been to Japan (from the US) 5 times, the last trip was late 2018, 10 days around Kansai with a Gion, Kyoto base. Kyushu, and Fukuoka specifically, is on my plan next, maybe 2022. I try to learn some Japanese and get out to less touristy places, smaller towns. My Japanese teacher whom I adore lives in Miyazaki, I might visit there too. Good videos, I watched them to the end which is rare for me haha. Subscribed.
Edit: Btw, from Fukuoka, maybe hop on the ocean ferry to Pusan for a day or 2.
That sounds like a great plan! I love Kyushu - there are just so many interesting places. And credit to you for getting away to less touristy places. I think it can be a more rewarding experience! Hopefully your Japanese teacher can show you all the best local places in Miyazaki!
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the support, that's much appreciated! So glad you're enjoying my videos! 🙏🎶
Thanks..
Thank you!
Hopefully I'll go back to Kyushu soon! I love it there!
I’m a big city guy so it didn’t cross my mind to go to Kyushu but now I want to go. Still planning on Tokyo for 2022 but Kyushu 2023 or 2024 for sure.
Hehe, glad it gave you some more ideas! And the new bullet train line will be up and running by then too!
Big like 148 👍🏻👋❤️🇯🇵 thank you for 🎬🌹😉
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing!

Glad you enjoyed it!
i going to japan for the first time for 12 days during the sakura season in april 23, entering and leaving from narita. however i really want to go to kumamoto and especially the nagasaki biopark. would you recommend squeezing tokyo, kyoto, osaka in the itenerary? or would that be too much?
Ok I just looked up Nagasaki Biopark and after seeing that guinea pig bridge and the capybara, I want to go there too now! :-) I really want to go to the Kumamon Park in Kumamoto, and you can get a boat across to Nagasaki and the Unzen Hells. There's enough to do in Kyushu that you could easily just go there are Tokyo.
You could stop off at Kyoto on the way from Tokyo to Kumamoto, then Osaka on the way back, to break up the long train journey. Or take an internal flight when you land and make your way back up on the bullet train.
It is quite a lot, but do-able if you spend only a short time in some places. If you're thinking of cutting anything out of the itinerary, I'd say Osaka because it's a city like Tokyo (while it has a different vibe, for your first trip the other places are more different from each other).
Hope that helps!
Kumamon strikes again!!!
Looks like it's a complete Kumamon invasion!! 😂😂
How many Kyushu passes should I buy if I travel the whole of Kyushu in 15 days?
You can get the pass for 3, 5 or 7 days, and there are passes for the whole of Kyushu, as well as northern Kyushu (that's the one I got earlier this year) and southern Kyushu.
Depending on your plans, you'd need to work out when it's best to have each pass, compared to buying individual train tickets. Ideally you'd do most of your long distance travelling within the period of a rail pass, to save the most money, then get individual tickets for shorter/fewer journeys eg if you're staying in one place for a few days.
Hi, Amy! Do you and Phil ever rent a car in Japan? What are your considerations, as a lot of places out in nature and the inaka are not always conveniently served by public transit?
Personally, I prefer not to rent a car, because neither of us particularly enjoy driving, and it feels more like an adventure on the train! I just prefer not to drive on holiday - then we can both have a drink if we want to, and we've always found we can get to places we want to go on the train. In Japan there are also lots of tolls on the roads, which can add up (although there are passes that make it easier). The train system is so good that I've always preferred to use that.
@@cakeswithfaces we're the same - I think it would stress us both out so much!!
9:48 Huis Ten Bosch is pronounced like ハウステンボス in Japanese. :)
Hey Amy I would buy that island an build the worlds largest machine .
On the abandoned island? You'd be able to hide it in the old buildings!
🍜👌👍
💯
Kumamon
you see cuteness
I see a cult hiding in plain sight
It definitely works! Cult of cuteness...
@@cakeswithfaces I get Vaccinated tomorrow and then again in august, if I might go to Japan October\November??
@@primokarma9841 Good luck with the vaccine, I just had my first dose too! No news yet on when Japan's re-opening to foreign tourists so for now we have to wait and see what happens.
am living in beppu came to japan from london kinlinko lake is beautiful in autumn r is pronounced l good luck
Hope I can make it there one day! That's a lovely place to live, hope you're enjoying it!
