    Great video. Wife is from a town just east of Fukuoka and most of my memories of Japan involve travels across northern Kyushu that you covered.
    Some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable. My favorite was the Mt. Aso caldera complex--think have been there 3 times and at times when you could go up to the crater. Am always ready to go again. Remember my daughter when she was little riding the horses which you showed and remember the views that you showed. And the food!!!

    Wonderful! I’ve been to Kyushu on two different holidays but aside from a Kumamoto haven’t been to any of the places in this video. We did have a sand onsen in Ibusuki though. One of my favourite places in Kyushu would be Kashima where the highlight was visiting the Yutoku Inari Shrine. Thankyou again for the amazing video.

      if you ever go back, try to visit Usa Jingu, Kunisaki peninsula (Rokugo Manzan Temples), both in Oita Prefecture. Yotoku Inari Shrine is really beautiful and peaceful. When I went in 2011, I didn't see many international tourists. The crowd really thins out as you hike up the side of the mountain.

    I rode a lot of Kyushu on a bicycle named Nimbus. The last trip, I flew into Osaka and took the ferry into Oita. I headed North along the coast and finally found my way to Kitakyushu and Fukuoka. After Fukuoka, I headed inland to Sawara and did a challenging climb to Mount Sefuri. I continued to ride around for a few more weeks. Japan is the safest country I've cycled in. Thanks for sharing the video. It brought back a lot of happy memories.

    For all people watching - he says "give your body a good rinse" before getting in the bath but you actually have to give your body a good WASH before getting in - this is very important and you will most likely be frowned upon if you enter the bath by just rinsing, without washing first. It's a big no no in Japan. It's why he says don't let the towel touch the water - it's because you wash your body with the towel.

    • @japanguide
      @japanguide  4 года назад +1

      Only rinsing is fine at most hot spring baths, especially in historical hot spring resorts where toji (therapeutic bathing) has been popular. At many old-fashioned hot spring bath there are not even any alternatives to rinsing because they are not equipped with showers or washing areas. And in some cases, the use of soap may even be prohibited. Hot springs are primarily about getting dirty with minerals. Don't confuse them with public baths.

    • @paxvenus6476
      @paxvenus6476 4 года назад +1

      @@japanguide I was hyperbolic in my comment because I didn’t want tourists to be judged by other Japanese people, most who surprisingly don’t know the ‘kakeyu' (rinsing) tradition. The reality is rather complicated. Could discuss onsen etiquette for hours but basically it’s safer to wash yourself first. That is the norm in 90% of onsens that foreigners will go to. In fact the latest poster advising Japanese onsen etiquette to foreigners by the Japan Spa Association explicitly says “Please wash your body before entering the bath”.
      You’re absolutely right that some onsens don’t have soaps or showers. Some don’t provide soaps because they do the job for you by removing dead skin and dirt from you like the hydrogen carbonate, sulfur, sulfuric acid and alkaline onsens. Others, because as you say, promote a more therapeutic experience. And because onsens are so stimulating, it’s best not to be too vigorous when washing off your dead skin as you could end up with ’yuatari’ (headache and other symptoms from onsen).
      There are those who say kakeyu is the norm in Kansai whereas in Kanto and up, it’s washing. I don’t know about that, but I’ve been to more than 50 onsens in my life in Japan, I am Japanese, and I’ve only ever seen a couple of people enter without washing first. So 臨機応変 is called for I think (very useful term for anyone studying Japanese!)
