It is worth mentioning that this system may not be legal to fly in many places as their isn't the necessary certification - yet. Vendors like TBS have to work to ensure compliance with local legislation and be able to demonstrate that. Examples of the kinds of paperwork are www.team-blacksheep.com/doc_c... and www.team-blacksheep.com/tbs-c.... Without these documents it is illegal to sell and use in many places. I know for many, this aspect isn't exciting or of interest but you need to be aware of this.

Getting back into fpv after a few years.. now this is cool
Definitely saving this vid for delivery of my new happmodel slim pro 2021 elrs 2.4ghz for my xlite lol great vid thanks buddy my xlite open tx is from 2019 also so glad you covered everything gj.
After seeing the range on a friends video it seems only VTX range is the limitation.
Exciting progress.
Great video. I'm glad to see other options coming, especially for the 915 mhz range. Right now not for me, BUT if more of MFGs start to release these on AIOs or include them as an option as a BNF (yeah probably going to happen on the quad side first as BNF rigs (any type of BNF) is really limited. For example if I were to go buy a REKON 5 and as a BNF and I had the option to pick EXPRESSLRS, I'd more tempted to look into it.) Right now, even with the configurator it seems pretty complex (although probably a better option than trying to get FRSKY xxx to run the same protocol as the 5 in 1 multi module on the Jumper T18 LOL). It is great to see the work that people have done to reverse engineer it then even better that some of more experienced people like yourself who are pressure testing it and finding the bugs and doing videos like this.
I am sure that over the next few months the whole ELRS ecosystem will get a lot more polished and easier to setup and use. The challenge for the ELRS team is the huge amount of 3rd party hardware and use cases they need to support - something most closed-source vendors don't have to worry about. One of the major problems for the project long term is nothing to do with the technology but the legality. Declaration of Conformity and other legal paperwork is needed to be able to sell and use this stuff in many parts of the world.. Happy flying!
Awesome upload. Cheers
I knew nothing about it so many thanks Lee. I already have a crossfire module in my TX16S s o see no need to be an early adopter. However, this looks very intriguing for the future of our hobby.
For whoops and smaller lightweight microquads not supported by TBS you will want to look at ELRS
I just started using expresslrs hope it will work as great as I think it will
Hi Lee, just got my elrs gear as well can't wait to try it out! A few videos ago I asked you if the normal DJI camera would fit in the Tadpole HD and you said it would, but after ordering I have found out that (probably due to armattan's tight tolerances!) that it won't fit. Any suggestions on how to create an extra milimeter of space? You have lots of experience with this stuff so I hope you can help me out! Currently down for the count :(
You can squeeze it in, it won't damage the camera at all. Joshua Bardwell mentioned it in a Livestream not long ago, that's what the majority of frame designers are doing instead of making a seperate frame for the 20mm DJI air unit camera.
Great stuff Lee ! I'm thinking this could be nice for fixedwing too ... Do you know of any receivers that might work with ELRS ?
There are lots coming out at the moment. BetaFPV, Matek and others make them..
I think it's important to make the distinction between the issues you had as a BetaFPV hardware problem rather than an ExpressLRS problem.
Love the video’s I have been flying ELRS for about 7 months now and love it not a single issue. Got a question because you are so good with Inav. Is there any AIO boards out there that are compatible with Inav
I am not aware of any - yet!
If you find one, please let me know..
I definitely will
You mentioned that ELRS connects to a rx tx uart. Do you know if there are plans for its use with ppm or sbus? Thanks.
There's a PR for adding CRSF inversion so you can use an SBUS pad, but not output SBUS. There's also at least one person fiddling with an ELRS PWM board for wings and such but that's still early on.
Hi Lee,
What kinda range are you getting on ELRS compared to other systems?
Cheers
Evel
I don't fly farther than legal and the system works well. Others will be have pushed range... Best to
The more I watch / read about ExpressLRS the more I'm tempted to buy a TX module to try out the RX's that Happymodel & BetaFPV sent to me so I can make folding TPU holders to put on Thingiverse (Happymodel done, BetaFPV 2.4G RX next).
But then I remember I have Crossfire which is virtually plug & play :)
As a Crossfire pilot I know what you mean. It just works and is something I can trust, even on the expensive models.. Happy flying!
Well... It's not that expensive, dude. Maybe when you got some money left... Test it. 😊
Do it man, everyone keeps saying "oh flashing ExpressLRS is difficult' is ridiculous, it's no harder than flashing betaflight.
Thanks!
Can you please advise any article about elrs phisics? There are install howto and few features description on site, but no base phisics and algorythms there..
Check out my ExpressLRS playlist for content aimed at new pilots and covers how to setup the system and get the best from it. Best of luck!
I’ve heard of issues with smart audio not working on legacy FCs. Did you experience that or were you just using the Betafpv board on that micro.
I've not seen that here - yet. I will keep my eyes open for it.
Sounds troublesome!
Has it gotten better since the date of this video do you think?
Considering getting the Tx16s and which internal tx system to get it with and elrs being one of the options built in or the 4in1 looking into info about each. Currently using tracer but considering ELRS only it doesn’t seem to be a very straight forward system.
ExpressLRS has matured a lot since this video was made. We are now on V3.x and it just keeps improving. The hardware options for ELRS have improved out of all recognition too with vendors like RadioMaster really working closely with the project to deliver some solid hardware. See my other, more recent, videos on ELRS..
@@Painless360 will do thanks
I still don't know what it is. Yeah I'm 73 but I fly. Is it a new protocol something like crossfire. Does it give longer range to quads? I have a Jumper T Lite that has a add on module bay on the back but which module shoud I get ? Aren't there different sizes as well as freqs? Would it work on my Deviation based Jumper T8SG Plus radio? It too has a module bay. Is there a VERY basic video around that truly explains what this mysterious (to me) Express LRS actually is from the ground up that won't expect me to know so much in advance that watching a video like this goes completely over my head. I guess I'm in the minority of the hobbiests or maybe you are in the elite of the hobby. I applaud what you know but it meant nothing to me. Thanks for your efforts and I'm sure it must have been helpful to some or even most. IDK
Sorry to hear that you found the content of the video too complex. ELRS is a new protocol that can be be used just like others available that you are familiar with. The main differences is that this one is not 'owned' by a radio manufacturer. Happy flying!
Hi there, is expresslrs legal to use in the UK? Kind regards, Mark
Fantastic overview, Lee! Thanks a lot! 😃
Now, with multiprotocol radios and this system... FrSky can die. Deservedly!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Might be worth an update "2 years after" in september when 3.3 or so will have been released and now supporting these 8 or even 16 channel pwm receivers radiomaster has offered now.
And SBUS too ;) See the other videos in the ongoing series. This is why I add a date to ALL of my videos (unlike so many others) so you know how current the detail is.. Happy flying!
Please explain the difference in the Zorro TX models .... 4 in 1 and the ELRS ?
The Multiprorocol 4in1 module can connect to lots of different recievers, see ruclips.net/video/Nii4ElEbg6s/видео.html and ExpressLRS is the latest, vendor independent protocol. See my video on it.
Hi Lee, why would one want to use ELRS? What is it for? What is the advantage?
Not tied to any one vendor. Will work with lots of legacy hardware as well as the new stuff coming out. Impressive range and full telemetry link for one of the lowest prices for this type of kit. See all of these covered in the video. The only questions are about the complience of the system with local legislation... happy flying
Thanks for this Lee. I have been wondering about ELRS. After watching your video, I will stick with Crossfire. Don't see any reason to switch.
Thank you for information. Can be install on flysky i6x somehow ?
From what I understood you need an Opentx radio that can talk CRSF... Happy flying
@@Painless360 thanks for answering
i bought the 915 mhz,it s played in a corner of the house,I updated the only radio i have qx7 and now i lost all my receivers because they don t bind anymore.
Had no problems with my happymodel elrs using both ep1 and ep2 receivers.Using 100mw yet to have a failsafe.Goes where my frsky would never go.Frsky is now dead
I've heard a lot of good things about the Happymodel stuff. I will not be buying any more FrSky stuff either! Happy flying!
Looking forward to when tiny whoops drop D8 for elrs. Whoop board with ceramic antenna… I can see that!
Happy model has already released a board with ELRS on board. The SPI-based receivers are hitched to Betaflight 4.3 which is problematic, but there's at least one that's on the board as a serial RX.
Do i need or should learn about ELRS if i just fly planes and not FPV in a small park on small planes? What will I lose for not using ELRS in my specific case?
Thanks
ELRS isn't specfic for FPV. The benefits remain the same for LOS. Happy flying
my OSD system message is "disable navigation first" and i cannot arm my airplane. i am using Inav and matek f411wse. pls help me what to do. thank you.
Check out my INAV series for how I setup my models here. You can't arm in navigation modes...
@@Painless360 thank you
All this hardware being fully Open Source means it has a very long life ahead of it. You could repurpose it for other applications if you wind up no longer using it strictly for RC models.
Thanks for the video, Lee. It’s a shame that I need to do the hardware mod on my qx7 to use elrs
Nope, you don't need to do the hardware mod anymore for a qx7.
@@anthonystownsend can you shed some light on this? On elrs website they mention the mod, but I might overlooked something. TIA
Hi, how can Elrs communicate with arduino uno or mega?
If there is a CRSF library, probably... Happy flying
Lee, Powell just put a video out about the legal issue of using ELRS.
Good for him, closed source vendors like TBS put a lot of effort into compliance with local laws and legislation i.e. www.team-blacksheep.com/doc_ce/id:2028
I think it's a fair point to alert people to the legality issue. I think it's a little disingenuous by some though because we should probably talk about the legality of the hobby overall. Anyone transmitting video in the US? Over 25mW in UK? Not using an LBT firmware in EU? Using D8 in EU? And yet dragging ELRS through the mud? Like I said...fair point to say the devices/firmware are not compliant.
@@mgtschida Agree I just point to Powell concern.
Does this allow you to use any reciever
Only ELRS ones on the same frequency. Happy flying
ELRS is !!!Jumper T Pro internal 1 MEGA WATT ELRS and the Jumper ELSR mini reciver $11 .. I run at 500mw its incredible miles away and the rssi stays at 99 its insane I tried to lose range but my battery ran out first with a throw away drone
Not for me atm but I do have an old R9m module floating around
@10:36 Welp... And with that ExpressLRS pretty much went off the table for me and _my_ RC needs at times requiring _all_ 8 Channels.
More channels with extra resolution coming all the time.. Best of luck
@@Painless360 IMHO, _that_ should have been a given from Day1 but I was more concerned about the apparently _forced_ requirement of sacrificing one channel for AUX1/Arming the vehicle.
I stopped flying ( just don't have the nerve dealing with regulations sucking the joy out of a hobby ) and went back to ground vehicles so I _may_ not even be the target audience but enforcing a concept onto _everyone_ is kinda backwards from what I'd expect to see from a new system 🤔
How can we use yappu telemetry on it. Make a video
Same as with Crossfire/Tracer that uses CRSF. Nothings special with this - cabling and setup on the flight controller is the same.. Best of luck!
@@Painless360 thanks we will trying... Best... 😊
I'm sorry. I thought this was for new pilots. I'm buried in jargon and acronyms. I don't know what any of those sequences of letters "terms" means. Where can I find a simple orientation so I can understand the language and begin as a beginner?
Loads of my videos are aimed at new pilots.. Check them out. I. E. ruclips.net/video/4iqKp-7RQkk/видео.html
I see a lot of people jumping on as its the new hotness with high refreshrates etc, but then getting burned with nothing but troubles. Problem is, it isn't consumer ready at all. People complained about how flakey the TBS ecosystem can be in certain circumstances, but it is orders of magnitude more robust than ELRS. This will of course change in time as the ELRS core becomes more mature and stable, and the focus moves to all the end-user comforts and code to catch all the edge-cases (there are lots!) with flashing firmware and binding etc.
The only place people have been having issues is when a) using FrSky R9 hardware and b) not updating the firmware for bug fixes. To say that the TBS ecosystem is more robust is false, LoRa is more widely used The reason why some many people are switching is because of the problems and hardware failures with TBS lately. Not to mention the 1/3rd of the price of a TBS nano receiver. Anyone who brings up that lack of customer support and hardware failures as a reason to dismiss ExpressLRS just doesn't understand the project.
@@anthonystownsend I'm not talking about the robustness of RF modulation, but the software/patching ecosystem and firmware bugs. There are many reported issues with ELRS beyond what you have listed. Check the github issues page, check the facebook group, check discord. There are many varied problems being reported all the time. ELRS will only get better, and is certainly a viable RF link right now if you're prepared to overcome teething problems, but if you just want to fly and not do any tinkering there are better options as of right now.
first like ;)
Sounds like the same teething problems as Open LRS.
A lot of this stuff is doing nothing but driving people away from the hobby 10 years ago you buy one item that does every thing in one box and has better osd than anything today. Know everything I have in one plug and play box now you have to 3 or 4 things you have to buy that was all in one box.
ExpressLRS is all compatible with each other. All 2.4ghz elrs receivers will work with any 2.4ghz elrs module same as 900mhz.
What is it, is a great illegal rc radio system. You will love it, until you get fined, specially if you are a shop and sell it.
Weird is not said by any youtuber
Pawel made a video on that, I guess you missed it.. Happy flying
