- Charles II - 5 Guinea The coin I have here today is a Five Guinea piece, minted in 1675 for King Charles II.
The Five Guinea was the largest denomination issued from the reign of Charles II through to the Great Recoinage of George III. By 1663, the process of hammering coins by hand was finally superseded by the machinery of Pierre Blondeau. Therefore, the chief engravers at the royal mint at this time were able to engrave the dies with a safeguard against clipping. On medium-sized coins, a grained edge was added, which would make any clipping very clear. On the large coins, such as the one here, the edge was inscribed with a Latin inscription. This phrase is best translated as “An ornament and a safeguard. This phrase emphasises the dual purpose of the coinage, one as a store of value and protection against counterfeiters, and two a statement of craftsmanship and style. Interestingly, for Charles II, in particular, the regnal date is calculated from the year of his father Charles I’s execution, not when Charles II came to the throne following his exile in France. Hence, on this coin, his regnal year is displayed as his 27th, but in practice, it was only his 8th year. This coin is relatively rare with only around £51,000 worth being minted in 1675, the second smallest output after 1663. This scarcity has been reflected in auction prices achieved. Ten years ago, this coin fetched £8,000 in auction, recently, this has jumped to around £40,000.

Very nice coin. However not worth as much as £40 pounds. They are rare, and anybody who pays this sort of money want their brains examined. £25 to £30 thousand more like the real price.
