    Amy is a truly great character.
    She’s a peppy, slightly erratic girl who does have a crush on Sonic, but she’s a character who stands for what’s right, and stands up for others, like in Sonic Adventure where she defends Gamma and protects Flicky. She solo’d a Zero and joined the ride in the Sonic Advance games and Sonic Battle.
    Hope she’s in the third Sonic movie.

    I've always thought of Amy as the heart of the group. She may not be the fastest, strongest, or smartest of the team but when she wasn't drooling over Sonic, she had a knack of bringing people together and even talking them into changing sides. One of my favorite moments with Amy was when she stood to Silver to let Sonic escape and despite the weird dialogue, she not only managed to stop Silver, but even made him contemplate whether killing to save the world was a good idea or not. She works best as the emotional support of the group in my eyes and while I wouldn't mind her taking more active roles in the future, she's not somebody who should be on par with Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles or even Blaze and Rouge for that matter.

    Honestly? I love the idea of Amy changing and growing stronger as she appears more and more. Her whole motivation is to become a stronger person to help those in need. At first during her first appearance, she quite literally wanted to/did slow sonic down to keep up with him. I like to think as she grew, she went from trying to keep up with him by his side, realizing she didn’t want to change him. In turn, this causes her to have her arc in SA1. She speaks on how she loves sonic for who he is, and doesn’t want to change him. There’s nothing wrong with her being a “normal” girl, it makes her growth that much more compelling. She has to work even harder than the rest to keep up with the group, she has a heart of good who’s capable of getting through to anyone, even Shadow, who wouldn’t show up for Sonic’s birthday, ended up showing up for Amy’s in TMoSTH. Her being spiritual and having a connection to magic only makes her character more interesting than it already was, because despite her powers, they were shown to be rather “inconsequential” unlike Knuckles’ abilities, Tails’ abilities and especially Sonic’s. She doesn’t need to be at Sonic’s level all the time. In a sonic live, Amy even says she doesn’t want to bother sonic and if she wanted to, she would keep up with him. She’s worked harder to even be able to get to where she is now. My ideal finish for her arc is a training arc with knuckles where she deepens the connection with the emeralds, having to work for a super form compared to the others (there’s more to it but I’ve already said enough LOL)

    The funny thing about Amy as a character to me is that I tend to somewhat think of her as a magician of some sort. Having the ability to turn invisible in 06, the tarot cards in CD to predict her future and Chronicles the Dark Brother for her attacks, magically summoning her hammer in Sonic X when Eggman in his ship was annoying everyone's quiet evening. I actually did a alternate universe redesign where she has a look of a magician given the recent games giving some light to her magic ability particularly the tarot cards.
    Now she's more of the heart of the group given her words help characters like Shadow turn over a new leaf to help out in SA2, standing up to Silver by giving him some life advice in a way, or help the Flicky find it's family in Adventure and Cream and Big find their friends in Heroes (despite wanting to marry Sonic from the writers...).

Amy will never be as fast as Sonic or as strong as Knuckles, but the fact that her growth is there at all and can be noticed is what matters, the fact that she can contribute as equally as everyone else is admirable. Sure, I don't expect Amy to use her cards for any major plot points any time soon (that would be an out of jail card in the most literal sense) but I can hope they expand on her love for mysticism considering how her cards have been pushed to the spotlight again.

    My biggest issue with Amy as of recent is that Sega tried to hard to retcon that Amy was always this strong heroic girl.
    It not only breaks continuity but also annoys me quite a bit as Amy going from a regular girl to a big Hero is one of my favorite things about the 2000s Sonic games were in there background Amy just keeps growing in competence starting out in SA1 like in the classics believing herself being a helpless girl that needs her Hero to save her. A option that Sonic very much shares about her.
    All the way to challenging Silver to protect Sonic with Sonic who just learned how dangerous Silver is being "okay you got this Amy".
    Amy slowly outgrowing her old self and becoming a strong independent Heroin was such a great multi-game story arc even if it wasn't executed all to gracefully.
    And by now pretending Amy was always like this do the games from 1998 to I say at least 2004 seem a bit odd concerning Amy.
    I also greatly dislike how often Amy's love for Sonic is just completely downplayed to barley even existing anymore (I don't want her to be weirdly obsessed ether I hate her in Rush and X for that very reason but like come one SA1, Riders 1 and more recently The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog all had a good balance of Amy clearly loving Sonic but it not being her whole personality)

    As someone who was never a fan of the "normal girl" Amy idea that some of the fanbase likes to use to say that Amy shouldn't be capable of doing certain things, I'm glad you made this video that explains that her normalness is more of her having mundane interests, not that she shouldn't be able to keep up with other characters. There are some things that I personally disagree with like how does Amy having strength take away from Knuckles when characters like Vector, Big, Storm, or even Rouge exist just fine. Just about every character in the series is a speedster too and that never takes away from Sonic's speed either. To me Amy has that sorta jack of all trades master at none which makes her a pretty versatile character. I see some people say that the emphasis should be on how she's emotionally strong over being physically strong but I'm not sure why it has to be a one or another situation. Take Katara from TLAB for instance, just like Amy she started off relatively weak but had a strong heart which is why she wanted to help Aang. She trained to become a great water bender and by the end of the series she's an amazing fighter but her empathy and desire to help others is still a prominent part of her character as well so I'm not sure why some think that she can't also be a fighter as well as emotional support. Now while I said that I think Amy is a jack of all trades character I do think what could easily set her apart from the other 3 is if they leaned a bit more into her magical abilities. I'm really hoping Frontiers will give her some magical abilities once she becomes playable just because it'd be nice to give her some variety than just her hammer. Anyways, good video I love discussing these things here rather than on sites on Twitter for the same things you mentioned in the video and I'll be sure to look out for more of your content!

      I really appreciate that you have engaged with my video in this way, thank you. I wanted this to be for solid discourse and I have been seeing a lot of it! as you say, Amy being pigeon holed as "Normal Girl" can be rather misleading. Even at her weakest playable point she was able to assist Sonic (Adventure). With Amy's strength taking away from Knuckles, the reason those other characters don't do the same is that they are not part of the main team / team Sonic. All the speedsters don't take away from Sonic for the same reason PLUS the series always implies Sonic is the fastest anyway. In recent media like that comic I showed, Amy's acts of Strength are becoming more and more on that Knuckles level and seemingly got there out of the blue, meaning in the main team Knuckles value falls with nothing to replace it.
      I hope you enjoy whichever videos you check out next, I have a fair mix of discussions, analysis and creative content. @TheRealMightyEmperor I suppose that's fair among the main four but Knuckles still has unique ability of being able to glide and climb and even with Amy's strength I don't think she's as strong as Knuckles just like there are many speedsters but Sonic is still the fastest among them. Tbh I actually like the idea of Knuckles and Amy being a pair the same way Sonic and Tails are. Origins Plus ending cutscene and just recently the Superstars Intro sorta show the two of them working together rather well and I've always been fond of the idea of the two of them being boxing bodies, the recent IDW issue also shows how great their dynamic is so I'd think it'd be nice if they'd play up their relationship even more since as it stands the most chemistry she has with the main four is really just Sonic, tho Murder of Sonic did give her and Tails more interactions which I very much appreciated.

    Really thinking about it now, there’s a deeper reason why my favourite characterised incarnations of Amy are from the Adventure games and my favourite gameplay incarnation is from Advance 1; they’re both perfectly balanced between what a normal Mobian/ anthro-animal character would be like in the Sonic universe and rivalling the capabilities of the main heroes in their own way.
    To me, Amy, in her peak gameplay and characterisation, represents more of a nuanced strength and intelligence for the series, particularly emotional intelligence (helping Gamma to gain free-will and her being the only one to directly convince Shadow to save Earth rather than destroy the world) and unorthodox gameplay strengths. People who say Amy sucks in Advance 1 because she can’t Roll, Spin Jump or Spin Dash just suck playing as her: Amy can absolutely decimate bosses, gain a surprising amount of speed if you play your cards right and has pretty versatile moves with her Piko-Piko Hammer to more than make up for what she lacks compared to the main trio.
    As for how Amy’s presented in recent years, I’m personally fine with her in the new Classic series content: her character’s absolutely on-point in the Classic series IDW comics, and I don’t mind her being buffed up in Origins Plus and Superstars, due to her appearance in Origins Plus basically being a fun What If scenario, and she’d need to keep up with the rest in Superstars because of the 4-player co-op aspect (plus I consider Superstars part of a Neo Classic Timeline anyway, akin to Mania). Amy’s character in the 3D titles after Adventure 2 is all over the place, to say the least; if she’s not a hot-headed Sonic fan-girl (Heroes and ‘06), then she blends into the background as an ineffective filler character (most of the late 2000’s spin-offs and most of the 2010 games, though the latter issue’s affected almost every character), and if she’s not that then she’s an out-of-the-blue tactical leader who girl-bosses everyone (Forces).
    If anyone was to be the leader of a Resistance Group against Eggman but without Sonic, Tails would absolutely be it. I’m not saying Amy wouldn’t help out when most needed, but I reckon if Forces was written way better then she’d boost and keep up the team morale, with Knuckles, Shadow and Silver being the most effective front-line fighters.

    I personally prefer the idea of a magical Amy or mystical things more. why?
    1: It expands her character more: If that was implemented more in Amy, her character could be explored in more detail, as well as making her more unique and interesting, and not just be another physically strong character.
    2: Fits her: Amy would fit perfectly into the magical girl camp, due to her personality, design and style, she could even have some transformation that has to do with magic or mystic, while she wouldn't be more powerful than Super Sonic, she could do some things that Super Sonic might not be able to, although the latter I think is too much to ask for.
    Personally, I understand Sega trying to make Amy a stronger and more capable character, and I like that, but for the moment they have only made her physically strong. Being strong isn't a bad power, but it's super basic, not to mention that there are several Sonic characters who are already physically strong besides Knuckles and Amy. They can keep Amy strong, but not to such a degree that she rivals Knuckles or even surpasses him, since they both serve the same function, and that's why Amy doesn't stand out much.
    While magic is somewhat difficult to implement, as it could get out of control if not handled carefully and set boundaries. However, a magical Amy is much more interesting than a super Amy or a strong Amy, obviously Amy would still be far from Merlina's level, as Amy is still very young and still has a lot to learn.

She starts as a normal citizen, wants to be a part of the crew (SA1) and so trains up for it. (as seen in Battle) Heroes gets a bad rap but outside of the main cutscenes she is in character and devotes herself to her friends, which kinda fits in with Frontiers. I also like that Sonic is slowly growing closer to Amy despite not really being a shipper. However, in the process she has lost the whole civillan thing that made her unique and special gameplay and role wise. I also worry Classic!Amy is becoming too competent which screws over her future development and the continuity. It can be done and not screw everything over as seen in Fighters and that IDW anniversary comic but its walking a tight rope and requires careful balance. And while SEGA has been getting better and the continuity has been mostly fixed, (Ian truly does earn Roger's nickname for him, Sonic Team's Janitor) I don't know if SEGA is ready to play with that fire yet.

    ICL, it is a bit jarring seeing Amy become so capable and proactive these days. Even in IDW, there was the Snow Inn arc where she struggled to use her Piko Hammer to defeat a polar bear robot, but now she is able to throw a massive hammer at a larger robot and devastate it almost like its nothing, without us seeing how or why she became so strong in-universe.
    And sometimes I do feel concerned that they are just turning her into Pink Sonic who is sort of overshadowing some of the other cast members, mainly Knuckles, or that they are just slapping roles onto her without really considering how well it fits. But even still, its good knowing that they want to take her character seriously these days. I especially like her IDW Classic interpretation, though, I do kind of wish they weren't so "in your face" about promoting her, though.

      Agreed. She's always been the "fill" character if you look at appearances as far back as Sonic R or Sonic the fighters. She's strong, she has magic (literal hammer space), she's fast. But none of her strengths outshine the guys. Afaik, none of her appearances allow her to be faster than sonic, stronger than knuckles or smarter than tails; but she has always been level-headed and warm hearted. Even when obsessed with sonic, you get the impression she's not blind to what's going on around her and acts accordingly.
      Her really big glow-up imo is forces where she really takes on the leadership role. It really feels like she stepped into that role because no one else was around to, and the IDW comics sorta kinda make it feel that way too. If Sonic is around she goes with his plan, but if not, she's usually the one with the most common sense and drive in the room. A good jack-of-all who others can depend on and thus will usually get saddled with roles others don't feel comfortable in.

    Knuckles wasn't always the "strong man" either. When he was a Chaotix member, it was Mighty who was described to be as strong as Sonic is as fast. I don't mind Amy being the power type because it does fit the hammer. Sega just needs to give Knuckles a new identity. It was only in Heroes that Knuckles was associated with the power type but he wasn't ever really depicted as physically stronger before. His identity revolved around his fists on how he can climb with them or punch things with them and in Adventure, dig with them.. I guess the punching is why Sega said he was "strong."

      I have to disagree, ever since Sonic 3 Knuckles was shown to be punching boulders, digging holes, knocking the super out of Sonic and otherwise having general strong themes attached to him. (Damage compared to Sonic in Sonic The Fighters for instance). Mighty was only around for one game and despite what the manual might say, gameplay wise he is just a Sonic clone so he is as fast and Sonic is fast, nothing to do with strength. The comics are truly where Mighty's power became a thing.

    I interpret the recent take of Amy as someone who *was* normal or average, but is now awakening to latent abilities due to hanging out with the core group and going on adventures with them. Classic Amy feels like an unhinged wrecking ball barely in control of her own power. While Modern Amy feels more in control and mastery of her newfound speed and strength, which while not as fast as Sonic or as strong as Knuckles, is slightly above the curve overall. Though of course, she’s compassionate and prefers diplomacy to using those abilities.

    I don't exactly think Amy being strong, even prehaps rivaling Knuckles in strength diminishes his own trait of being super strong, specially because his feats of super strength are much more consistent than hers. I think Amy gives off more of a adaptable wildcard vibe, plus all this inconsistency in her traits is very much in line with how the Sonic games and cast are written. I always red her as this character that's a bit good at everything but not masterful at anything, and a lot of what we see in the games points to that too, she's always seeking self improvement and i think that's the beauty in her, she is and can be whatever she wants, it's what her character is at it's best, Sonic is a fragment of her life and she balances going on adventures and being a VERY functional teen and damn, that's kinda really awesome

    Let me start of by saying that; I'm a HUGE fan of Amy! She's the reason I got into the sonic franchise and the reason why I stuck with it. And as a kid, she just had this personality that I was enamored by and attached to. She was loud, hot-tempered, but she was also passionate and was so open and genuine about her feelings and you can just tell she had good intentions. It's hard to explain but, where is Sonic was the "spirit", Amy to me, came across as the "heart" of the group. I've even expressed this before in other videos defending her character and explaining her importance that; Amy was actually a good influence on me growing up (yeah it may sound weird having to say how a fictional character impacted you) but Amy was just so passionate and always saw the good that I wanted to show that same compassion to others as well.
    Now reason I'm mentioning why Amy was important to me as a character is well...Amy just doesn't feel like...'Amy' anymore. I understand that others might've found the "fangirl" side of her personality annoying and wanted that side of her toned down, but it felt like it sort of nerfed that "passionate" side of her as well. Sure she was a fangirl but personally I thought it worked because (and I don't know how to say this) but she was the one who "believes in [you]". 'Cheerleader' feels like the wrong word to use but that word is used to describe "someone who encourages and lifts spirits up" and that's what Amy was to me. And look, I get it that they want to mature Amy (which I'm all for by the way!) But as i said before it's in a way that doesn't make Amy feel like herself anymore. I'm probably a small minority who feels this. And I don't want her character to fall into "Sally Clone" or "Mary Sue".
    I didn't even go into her actual strength in universe. But I also love Amy because she was the "normal girl" of the cast. Where Sonic has super speed, Cream and Tails being animals that don't have the ability to fly but manage to do so, and Shadow being the ULTIMATE LIFEFORM, Amy doesn't have natural abilities and I find it more interesting that this "normal" character and them having to work hard to improve themselves and their strengths. The problem is, because Amy isn't the main character (and by that I mean Sonic's status), and hell was mostly pushed to the side the last several years, she doesn't/didn't have that personal screentime where we see her work to improve herself so it only happened off camera. I'm fine with her not having super strength on par with Knuckles, but something that acknowledges that she's improved and has come so far from the damsel in distress she was in CD, and is now someone who can fight for themselves on their own two feet. And her tarot cards is also an aspect I wish in-story would bring back or at least mention from time to time (that in itself feels completely forgotten). It's only a small part of Amy's character but if possible, it would be cool to see in a moveset like how it could possibly utilize with her hammer.
    My opinions will abruptly end here (I apologize if this text was hardly understandable). But to conclude, it feels like even Sonic Team doesn't exactly know where they want Amy to stand, which is a shame because like I said, she's a character I absolutely adore, but hate seeing her not utilize to her full potential.

    In my opinion they’ve done an over correction of Amy as a Character. For the past 20 Years she’s never used Tarrot Cards but all of a Sudden she’s using them/are mentioned in every single appearance as if she never stopped. Classic wise they’re retroactively acting as if Amy has always been “Part of the Team,” beating up Robotnik with the gang despite Sonic in CD all the way to Adventure 2 obviously wanting nothing to do with her. Her Strength and Speed has constantly been changing going from 50 in the 2000s to 0 in the 2010s to All of a Sudden 100 in Origins Plus, Superstars, and Frontiers (according to the Leaks.) It makes sense they’d want a Main Female Character to attract a bigger audience but personally I don’t like the way they handled her rising prominence, especially with the way Ian Flynn wrote her (and everyone else for that matter) in Frontiers

    The drift series amy could blow heart to confuse people
    Fighters she can make things fall out of the sky on command and can summon her new piko piko hammer
    Adventure she can make small shockwaves with her hammer and destroy robots
    Advanced shes abit quicker (can run up walls and ceilings with a running start,) has a ground pound move and can painfully grind on rails like big in heroes
    Advanced 2 has out right super speed can do tricks in the air, can grind on rails like sonic and co and learns her amy dash( a spin dash that revs up as a peel out)
    Heroes again is way faster(can't run vertically on walls), can throw tornadoes, can homing attack/jump dash, can hover in the air for a bit by spinning and says that she can follow her heart to find sonic cause her heart is never wrong as well as saying that she could sense froggy and chocola were somewhere in the area when neo metal was in the area
    Battle has explosives, we learn that amy fell of her training arc and does boxercises and all around training to get stronger (its referenced in idw and it seems like she still does it), states that she uses her womans intuition( i forgot why she says that in her story) and can hallucinate/create clones of others(she's only created sonic once)
    Advanced 3 has confetti with her 🎊 can do a small hammer jump mid air, can float with balloons, gains a slower but still effective peel out, has the 2nd easiest time breaking walls (knuckles does it better,) has a massive heavy hitting hammer and can rocket her friends high in the air by slamming her hammer on the ground (most likely using strong shockwaves as the same move was referenced in generations)
    Shadow 05 she punchs enemies thats it
    Rush she was stated to have a sonic radar and could keep up with sonic while chasing him with her hammer
    06 she and become can be come invisible, tells silver the she has a girlish intuition that helps her find sonic as well as saying that she feel that sonic was in dusty desert
    Chronicles is not canon
    Generations could create powerful shockwaves that sent sonic flying high in the air and could spin so fast she could fly around (its the move from heroes but stronger)
    Lost world and forces show amy more mellow that it
    Idw throughout the comic and is shown to be a strong character i dont remember everything but some feats of strength include
    Effortlessly cracking a massive boulder in half, lifting the massive hammer and collapsing part of a building

    I think part of the difficulties with Amy in the games is that she's hard to integrate because most every character has a different moving style. Sonic is the runner, tails flies, knuckles glides/climbs and also has that strength going for him, but Amy is often given Sonic's movement + hammer. Shadow usually gets away with having sonic's speed because that's his whole deal, but for Amy it just copies a part of her that could be unique. Older games usually give her a unique hammer bounce, which helps make her movement stand out, but sega hasn't at all leaned into this, occasionally scrapping it entirely in newer games.

    What I love about Amy is how she has grown from observing her friends, and spending time with them. Its a well known fact the people we spend time with influence our emotions, opionions, and even appearance (but thats not applicable here.) Amy started as a damsel in distress with a compulsive obsessed for Sonic, but after her rescue she grew more confident in her own abilities and sided with Sonic and friends to protect those in need as Sonic done for her. She relaxed her obsession and is taking a more mature route by expressing her admiration of Sonic in a far healthier way (albeit very strongly.) And though we can assume she's always been a sweetheart, we know know Sonic is an environmentalist and deeply cares for Mobius's habitats and habitants, and this clearly rubbed off on Amy, as she fights vigorously to protect her home and friends. Amy has a big heart too, even standing for Badniks, which takes a lot of forgiveness after the atrocities thousands of those brainless automatons have committed. She most recently (In media anyways) stood for Trip, simply a misguided misfit following a bad influence. I believe Sonic is also a major role model as he is incredibly forgiving even to the likes of metal Sonic and Eggman because they have the freedom to be better, even if they don't act on it. Amy is additionally incredibly strong, absolute powerhouse with her Piko Piko hammer. I hope in some future media we could learn more about her hammer, maybe its an heirloom from her parents, who are strangely very absent. I wanna see more of her friendship with Knuckles and Tails, its easy enough to befriend Miles but to have Knuckles actively admire her strength and train her is a testament to her power. I would love to see her hammer space explored, is it a magical void, can she summon her hammer in thin air? Like, how! Lastly, even with her growth, her loyal fans, and her recent representation, Sega must have some serious sexist policy, because its time to let the girl go super, let her golden glow shine, and let us fans rejoice. Thank you for the entertainment and personal insight! Hopefully we'll get more Amy, Cream, and Big in the future, cheers!

    Amy’s Strength
    -Her hammer jump from Sonic Adventure/Sonic Advance already implied some above average strength
    -Sonic Battle showed that did Boxercise and trained with heavy weights. It also stated on a skill card that she did Kickboxing classes at some point.
    -She is most likely not on the same level as characters such as Knuckles and Big; she can smash stuff with a hammer and they can mass stuff with just their physical bodies.
    -A key thing to mention about the hammer incident in IDW is that she overexerted herself and was very exhausted and had to take a little break.

    Although I like the idea of a normal, civilian Amy without powers, it's a concept that wouldn't work very well for Sonic these days. However, it could work very well if Amy was the main character, but as we know, she's not.
    Magic, always seemed like something with a lot of potential to me, that would help her distinguish herself more from others, without the need to just be brute force. Although I would put some limitations on it and that would mainly have to do with mystical things and her tarot cards.
    As for Amy's characterization, well I don't know if you'll agree with me, but I liked the Amy from before better. I understand perfectly why some fans didn't like that Amy, but Amy's nature was to be a fangirl, energetic and passionate about what she does, and to openly show her feelings, showing tender and sweet moments, as well as rough moments, those things were what made her memorable, regardless if you like her or not. I'm sure if Amy had always been more like many of her current characterizations, Amy probably wouldn't be as hated, but she wouldn't have the same popularity and repercussions she has now. I just hope the movies don't turn her into a generic female action character, and respect her essence.

    Great video! TLDR at the bottom.
    Yeah Amy definitely has inconsistencies. She is one of my favorites but has a plethora of abilties brought up in one game and forgotten in the next. As far as strength goes however, Amy was shown to keep up with everyone in sonic advance 3 and even has a giant hammer she wields with knuckles. Sonic x also has her knock out a shark with a weak swing and break out a solid metal wall. In archie she also goes toe to toe with the iron king (jun kun) who took laser fire from an army and even sonic had trouble with him while she was able to daze him. I don't think sonic is weaker than Amy, but just that he wasn't used to fighting him yet.
    When Amy met cream in archie she knocked down at least a 20 ft tall robot with ease. Basically my point is Amy being strong isn’t new, and I think in idw her feat seems so contradictory is because all of Amy's past feats don't involve carrying anything. Well, sonic battle says she alwas wears weights but that's not all that relevant. Usually her strength is shown by hittng something larger than her or in sonic x she dents the bars of her wooden cage by grasping it.
    Then there's her mystical side which we see as attacks in chronicles where she can curse people. In battle (don't like Amy here but it gives her great abilities) Amy can make a projection of sonic and probably other characters if she tried. This is more than a hallucination since it does damage to rouge. Of course there's her tarot and psychicness included in a comic where Amy "senses" espio while he is invisible. In sonic heroes Amy says she senses chocola and froggy inside eggmans base. In sonic the fighters her hammer is said to be magic. Back to physical again, since adventure 1 says her hammer is a weak weapon, this would mean the power comes from her, so this means she swings fast enough to make tornados and hard enough to make tremors like in battle and satbk multiplayer, or as shown in idw issue 2 itself. Although I could also see her passion being something mystical that helps her.
    TLDR: Sorry this was so long, there's more contemporary material but I think I provided enough examples for mystical and physical feats. I only bring contemporary stuff up since idw while in line with Amy's current and past characterization before she was flanderized in the games is still confined to the comics and so is her feat with the large hammer. I think it's reasonable to say Amy's strength and even her mystical abilties have been something used sparsely in the games while highlighted in the comics and other external media. But while it may have been in the background both parts, especially the physical strength side of her, have been relatively constant (not consistent) outside of games since sonic x and other media onward. So since 2003. In game Amy has been shown to be more capable in sonic heroes and advance 3, where she also has a giant hammer with knuckles. There are also mobile games that came out beforehand that depict Amy's strength. One says (I forget which) she cracked the death egg in half (although even I find this hard to believe), but it's there also several years before idw.
    Again great video! I hope it didn't seem like I was attacking you. Just expressing my thoughts

  • @ToaArcan
    @ToaArcan Год назад +1

    I think the notion of Amy's magic being understated is putting it lightly. It made no appearance outside of manuals until Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, a game that isn't even canon. And yeah she pulls her hammer out of nowhere, but this is the Sonic series and everyone does that. Even characters with clothing that could contain pockets only ever seem to pull objects out from behind their backs.
    I also wouldn't really consider 06 as an example considering its attitude to everyone else's abilities, including Amy's speed. It's 06. It's just kinda wack.
    Regardless, I'm one of those people that viewed Amy as the "Normal One", at least initially. She's the only one of the core cast to consistently used a weapon, whereas everyone else does equal damage to machines with their bodies. She usually can't spindash or spin-jump, she's slower than many of the other characters, and in Advance 3, she's implied to be the weakest of the five playable characters by way of pairing her and Cream being a Fly-type combination rather than a Speed-type.
    Maybe that last one's not fair, Cream tends to be inexplicably godlike.
    I think of Amy as someone who _starts_ as a normal and over time, grew stronger, without gaining explicit superpowers. She might not have the same abilities as her friends, but she's able to be just as effective as them via skilled application of her signature weapon. And I will admit that I don't want this to change, mainly because Amy's at her most fun to play as when her gameplay revolves around her hammer entirely.
    And if Sonic was a series that had forward momentum then that would largely be fine. But Sonic is stuck in the past. 2/3 of Amy's playable appearances in the 2020s are Classic Era games, things that can only happen _before_ SA1. And that means that we now have Amy with a Super form in the Classic Era, and I find that weird.
    Amy's story in Sonic Adventure is very small-scale. She spends most of the game running away from a single robot that Sonic could most likely trash in seconds, and trying to save a single animal when Sonic rescues dozens in every level. It's also apparent that Sonic doesn't really take her seriously. Amy runs up and says "Hey protect this bird" and Sonic immediately runs away.
    This doesn't make a lick of sense if Amy already has the power to turn into a demigod.
    In terms of her character writing, Amy's fallen into the same category as any of the characters who haven't become farcical parodies of themselves (like Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow), where she's just become kinda... bland. Her anger issues are gone, her crush on Sonic is heavily downplayed, she even got contact lenses so now she doesn't think every hedgehog in the world is Sonic anymore. And in her case I think it's a case of the series falling into the trap that every show/comic/game/whatever that only puts one girl in the core cast: One character has to be the representation for 51% of Earth's population and thus has to be agreeable to all of them.
    SEGA could solve this by way of just including more girls in prominent roles, allowing them to be more diverse, but this is SEGA. They're stuck in the past. They didn't make any other girls before 1998, and only things from before 1994 are allowed to matter now. And while there _are_ some girls from '92 and '93 they could use, they were made by stinky Americans and forfeited their existence for that crime in 2017. So Amy's the only one allowed to have more than a single line per game and thus the burden falls upon her.
    As for the comics, they're weird. Amy's one of those areas where you can really smell the "Half this creative team are holdovers from Archie" on the IDW book, because Archie Amy got amped _hard_ in Ian Flynn's run. By the end of the comic, Amy was stronger than Bunnie, and better at finding the pieces of the Master Emerald than Knuckles, because she mastered an ancient sacred ritual whose participants take years of training, literally overnight. Though given that this creative team were still getting flak from Amy fans for things that were published before any of them even worked for Archie... can't say I blame them.

    • @TheRealMightyEmperor
      @TheRealMightyEmperor  Год назад

      Interesting take, it just goes to show how diverse Amy opinions can be since yours is still unique despite all the other comments I already read. Amy has shown magic more than you give credit for (Literally sensing Sonic in multiple games to the point I have to acknowledge it, her move set in heroes) but it was indeed understated. I think a good question to ask was, did it have to be Amy who got "elevated". As many have said, a lot of what made Amy stand out is now lost, it may have been best to simply pick a different character to spotlight/ Which is not me saying ignore Amy, just not have her need to change so much basically overnight.

    • @ToaArcan
      @ToaArcan Год назад +1

      @@TheRealMightyEmperor Yeah, that's fair.
      I think giving Amy a buff makes sense, even if it makes her less fun. SEGA have been burned every time they try to make characters who don't play almost exactly like Sonic into playable characters. The fanbase _prefers_ the cast to be homogenised as much as possible.
      Honestly, I don't think I can be completely fair to Amy. She's never been my favourite, and I got into Sonic in 2004, started falling out of love with it in the meta era because from my perspective both the games and comics were starting to go downhill, and thus almost my entire time in the fandom was with Crazy Amy, when the only thing she cared about was Sonic and this was played for comedy.
      So it gives me this weird perspective where her shift is for the better, because I didn't like the crazy version, but because I only ever _knew_ the crazy version, a sudden shift away from it feels as alien to me as "I eat paper, what's a Master Emerald?" Knuckles, "I hate all of you" Shadow, and "Here's my butt, Chaos 0!" Tails.
      It's a weird thing when something's objectively _and_ subjectively superior but the vibes are still wrong.

I get that her ‘tiny girl with massive hammer’ schtick has been used a lot since she got the hammer, and probably a bit before that as well, but I think that it makes her more distinct from the ocean of Sailor Moon-like characters. I kinda like the idea that Amy is the ‘jack of all trades’ character, she’s not as fast as Sonic, not as strong as Knuckles, not as smart as Tails, but she’s fairly well-rounded in each field and has tools at her disposal that she can use to utilize those ‘lesser’ strengths in different ways than the characters that specialize in them thanks to her more rounded abilities; her hammer isn’t as strong as Knuckles but can be used in more creative ways with her speed. In SA1 she is relatively slow and playable in mainline for the first time, and in Adv1 she is mostly the same but iirc seems a lil faster, and she just gets way faster in 2,3, and Heroes and is a strong fighter in Battle. 06 is a weird outlier, but as you say that's 06, a weird game in general. Do they ever confirm the invisible thing is her magic?
    Still would be nice to have more narrative showing her change in game though. I also like the implication that she took charge in IDW because she was the one really calling the shots in Forces (which happened right before IDW). Knux never felt believable as the commander anyway.
    I always got the impression she was very strong, but not to the same level as any character considered a Power character or Mighty, or even Shadow (or maybe even Rouge). Hello. Not sure you remember me, being the guy that wouldn't stop ragging on about a cartoon pink hedgehog, which I'm very sure I contributed to at least 1/5 of the comment section of your Where Sonic Went Wrong with Amy video. But anyways, it's been a year or two since I last dropped by here and a lot can actually change and happen to someone in that timespan which I'm no exception. I can say that Prime solidified the fact the Amy I love is sadly gone and is never ever coming back. It's not like I had HUGE expectations and hopes for Prime or anything, but I at the very least had a little bit of hope that it would represent a new era and direction and possibly, a return to form for Amy. All the hope I had completely disappeared the moment I heard her new voice. I've always been harsh and critical towards Cindy's Amy, but hearing that Prime is actually gonna stick to this direction that has been going on for at least a whole decade now was really the nail in the coffin to this whole ordeal. Even the slight design change with the white sleeves on Amy's dress was enough to actually make me physically ill. It's not only tacky but it's also unnecessary to the point that I couldn't find any good reason why they would add something like that. It really just feels like yet again another attempt to downplay her main design, making her dress look more like a t-shirt. I wasn't trying to be mean or anything, this is literally what I thought. It's just so weird how they have to downplay Amy so much, considering that pretty much never happens over at the JP side. I'm not saying specifically that they were doing that on purpose, but combined that with her current personality and the attempts made to pretty much making sure everybody knows that Amy isn't "A WEAK GURLLLL", anymore, it really hammers in my point. Rusty and Thorn are fine... I guess??? I enjoyed them a lot actually, but I really wish their existence weren't at the expense of making mainline Amy herself look and sound bland in comparison, which was a concern I had with SatBK with Nimue being the prominent Amy in that game. Only this time I think it's even worse since the whole multiverse schtick is the show's main selling point. I think what upsets me the most is the fact that Prime is supposedly canon to the games, meaning that this is the only Amy that matters, like none of her portrayals or her development beforehand mattered. Maybe I'm just expecting too much, maybe I only care about this silly cartoon and their hedgehogs, but fuck, that still doesn't make me feel any less heartbroken at the fact that something I loved is being replaced in a way and is being looked down on as a cringe phase or something, when really, she was just a bubbly, happy-go-lucky go-getter girl with a huge crush, who misunderstood her situations at times, and even if some of her actions doesn't always reflect it, she still has a pure heart that values others. Looking back at my original comment thread, I still stand by a lot of what I've said there. Some things in there I could've worded better or even I don't agree with anymore, but I still think it holds up and represents how I feel about her.

      Hey welcome again, I do remember you with that rabbit profile picture! Thanks for stopping by again. I have actually only seen episode 1 of prime because it is free so I can't comment much on it. Based on your thoughts though, yes it's clear this new Amy is well established now. Frontiers seems like it might explore some old Amy in the future, but like I say in this video "share love with the world" is a very nebulous and unclear goal

      @@TheRealMightyEmperor Apologies for the 4 day late response, I wanted to collect my thoughts for a bit. I haven't played Frontiers and most likely never will, but from what I gathered from the cutscenes, Amy sounds drab, tired and bland just as much as she was in Forces, LW, TSR, etc. A direction I was already not a fan of. I know I sound like a broken record by bringing up the same complaints over and over again with how I don't like the current voice cast, direction and all that, but I'm really so sick and tired of seeing Amy being downgraded into being just a girl character that can't show any personality traits that could be deemed as rude, annoying or stereotypically girly, all in a while this fanbase accepting it. The most recent Twitter Takeover backs me up here, as I remembered Amy's response to what I think was a Sonamy-related question that she "likes" Sonic, assumably instead of love. If the Frontiers DLC does end up doing something positive to Amy's character than I'll happily eat my words, but I just don't have that much faith in her future nowadays given how Ian Flynn is seen as the driving force for this series. I by no means hate the guy unlike the Archie weirdos that camp out in Twitter all day sending threats his way. There's a reason why I don't ever go anywhere near the comics. But it still leaves me feeling alienated.
      I've only watched season 1 of Prime, I can say it's a decent show, albeit the awkward pacing at times and the Eggman Council being kinda annoying and taboo for my tastes. But I do appreciate the show going back to more serious storytelling. I haven't seen season 2 just yet. I was contemplating on whether I actually wanna see it. Might watch it for Thorn and Rusty alone, but that's about it. The callbacks to the flicky are nice and all and she did have some heartwarming memories during the Thorn episodes, but it's just so hard for me to appreciate the good elements when it's all gobbled up by the shoddy voice direction.
      To be honest and truthful, this past year has been difficult for me personally. Mentally, physically and emotionally. The start of 2022 kicked off with a abusive coworker I had at my old job that still have me scarred and a huge trigger to this day, to the point where I was afraid to even go back to work. Not being able to handle a physical labor night shift job had me questioning my worth and whether I even have a place in this world. The thought and feeling of hopelessness and worthlessness eventually plagued through my real life too, where it turned into a blend of sadness, hatred and anger. Performing worse at school than the last couple of years and ended up flunking and failing the first semester of the year, adding to that feeling of worthlessness.
      I grew to hate a lot of things. The Sonic fanbase I believe to be at its absolute worst yet. Zoomers dominate virtually every corner of Sonic discourse now and it seems like all of them have IDW, Frontiers or Prime pfps. The way they treated Arlo and thy way they acted during the pre-release of Frontiers as well as the game awards in December where Frontiers lost to Genshin Impact, speaks for everything. The r/sonicthehedgejerk subreddit is the biggest group of losers and terminally-online troglodytes I've ever seen. They never have the balls to hear the other side of the spectrum and mainly resort to blatant name calling, gaslighting, and what they consider to be fun trolling, all for daring to like anything from the Adventure/Dark age. Social media and TikTok has undoubtedly ruined this fanbase. Gen Z is honestly the worst generation ever. They are rude, have no self respect for themselves, and are so bloody obsessed with wanting to diversify EVERYTHING. An artist I heard of was at the verge of game ending herself, all because she didn't draw a character in the correct skin colour that zoomers went way their way to harass her and send death threats. I sound ya boomer but I'm only 22, and even I can see right through their bullshit.
      The added attention to Amy also led to many amounts discourse surrounding her, which included Amy's Sonic X portrayal and many other portrayals after that being used explain why she was toxic and reeks of double standards, along with a dose of paintjnf defenders of those portrayals to be supporters of the real life victims of said crimes. Like this shit was enough to make me wanna lunch a hole in my wall. That's what the internet and social is and has always been. A ticking bomb about to go off and you wanna go and stop it but you can't. I can't confront anybody because they're all hiding behind a screen so I'm just left punching thin air. I'm just so angry that I now can't enjoy any source of Sonamy without being regulated to shitty fucking debates. I miss when shipping Sonamy never amount to being accused of supporting real-life crimes and victim's of said crimes or double standard. Seeing Gen Z acting so smug about all this, thinking they're doing everyone a favor by calling it out while they sit there trying to fish for old shit to cancel and send out to the world disgusts me. I can't say that I like Amy's 2000s portrayals oublicly anymore without people telling me and others that i'm supporting a lost cause for defending "stalker yandere Amy" as if that was the ONLY thing, let alone ever a thing I liked about her in the first place. Truly inexcusable behavior
      It was to the point where I don't even feel comfortable being with other Amy fans for that reason. And it was at the point where I wondered if I even still like Sonic anymore. Because most of the stuff I've said publicly or thoughts about Sonic in my head were most if not all negative. It was soul crushing and heartbreaking to think I was slowly losing my passion in my own eyes. Seeing something I loved being ridiculed constantly on RUclips, Twitter, TikTok, by a younger and more impressionable generation, writing her off as a stalker, yandere, and one dimensional, all in a while being replaced by a shallow imitation of lesser quality and seeing everyone accept it as the superior version, it's hell. It's just as bad as how Adventure fans felt with Colors being the status quo and their games being smeared by the general public. Or seeing a loved on die only for them to come back from the dead but are never the same again, and all fond memories you've had gets replaced and overwritten by sad ones. It's crazy to think that the Sonic series could go back to its glory days of good stories and characterizations for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and co, yet Amy would still be the bland girl character Sega's been pushing as character development ever since Forces, which compared to what she used to be, is so depressing.
      This didn't last long though. I did fortunately get a new job closer to home. It's nothing glamorous or anything, still min wage, stressful as all hell and my manager gets on my nerves, but it's serviceable. I did end up passing the 2nd semester after failing the first one. Been in real life-ing quite a bit, balancing getting my driver license and gym. Even though I can't predict that I can keep this momentum going, hell I could get fired for whatever reason. But I can safely say I'm in a better place now than I was a year ago. Seeing the amount of Amt discourse, and looking back at my old thread, I think I said I wanted to do a Sonic X Amy review, something that's been on my mind for ages now, only recently. I have kinda forgotten about it for a while since real life got in the way and I didn't think anyone wanted to hear about a 20 year old depiction of a character they claim is outdated. Even though I'm at the verge of calling it quits as I don't feel comfortable being with this fanbase no more, I still have that passion and I still care. Just gotta find a way to watch the Japanese version and of course find a way to work around its strict copyright.

Most those things you listed as making it worse I have heard about but rarely seen because I don't look or engage with that sort of stuff. If im right in sonic cd plot amy camed to the little planet place because her tarot cards told her she will meet a mysterious blue hedgehog and so its intended that amy has an affinity in clairvoyance so fortune telling too and things of this sort but aside from this its true that all of her others capacities never been clearly told where they come from or just the why of how she got that ! her piko piko hammer is certainly her most iconic one and i always wonder where she got it , now her super strenght is also mysterious but hey she need it somehow to throw this hammer or maybe the hammer itself is special ? as for the speed side well it got kinda justified in the sonic heroes game cuz in her team she was the most fitting to be speed since she is light and cant fly like cream but she could also been power typed with the hammer but big has to fit the role but maybe in another version amy could have been power typed ? ill always remember in sonic generation the little level mission with her when you call amy to help sonic gets on high platefrom when she htis him with the hammer. As for the leader side it also kind of come from heroes maybe ? thou her unique movite is most likely to chase after sonic and since at the time we were entering the 'dark' era of the sonic games it was not surprising especially the cutscene where she said to sonic you will marry me .-. in sonic adventure she was joking about it when sonic was in jail and its was ok but in heroes it feel forced :/ but yeah amy being leader sided is a bit more confusing until they maybe try to make her like sally but i dont think so x)
    But the thing i wonder about amy abilities , i know its single simple detail but aside from shadow to my knowledge amy is the only character who wear 'rings' bracelets around her gloves , now i think these are here cuz of the fashion side and these could just be simple gold bracelets but what if they were rings and that would be why she have such powers ??? now i know its kinda crazy theory right there its not very serious but hey i take what i can find ok xD
    But the fact that amy could be more magic sided i love it and would tbh go well with her clairvoyance side !
    Aside from all this i think this year is good for amy and other sonic stuff of course but our cute little pink hedgehog needs the love she deserve !
    Sure amy can be annoying and VERY clingy over sonic in other versions of her that once again the dark era gave us :/ but amy at first i think compare to other female sonic characters well she is meant to be the heart and emotion sided one of the group we saw it in adventure amy has a heart big and pure ! and i think this is one of her major powers in itself , sure it can sound cliché or goes into the stereotype of girls are more emotional and empathic then mens etc etc sure but thats just the essence of amy itself a cute girl who have a big pure heart and have a strong will into helping others despites the risk !
    Now i do think amy truly love sonic and even if its not in a romanticall way she just care alot about him and her attachment to him can be justfied , cuz before her meeting with him back in cd we dunno what amy life was but it was probably pretty normal and with sonic amy discovered the love of aventure and thats also why she chase after him i think.
    Sure amy might not be a character for everyone and its ok we dont ask you to love everyone :0 but you cant deny the impact amy has and still get !
    As a fan of her im truly happy this year she gets more attention just like many i wanna know more about her mysterious powers source x) cant wait for more in the future!

    I wholeheartedly disagree with her modern characterization contradicting past portrayals. Her whole deal in Sonic Adventure was becoming more independent and throughout her entire campaign she was a scared, mostly helpless lady running away from a single Badnik, Zero. By the end of the game, she mans up and decides to fight back and do the right thing even if it scares her, it is a powerful moment despite the game's nowadays ancient-looking presentation and execution. She gets downgraded a bit in Sonic Adventure 2 by being mostly useless, however it did show us she now actively tries to he involved with the gang's adventures and heroic acts. Heroes happens, she's now leading a team of her own, albeit for selfish reasons, but she has now absolutely accomplished her SA goal, she is independent AF and quite capable of handling things on her own. More of her skill and heroism gets expanded upon on spin-offs such as Shuffle and Advance 3 and most notably Sonic Battle, where we see her actually training in melee combat to improve her abilities. By the time games such as Shadow the Hedgehog and 06 happen Amy has matured mentally, improved physically through on-screen training and honed her skills to a point where she's arguably just as capable in some regards as the rest of the heavy hitters of the cast.
    IDW and Frontiers didn't just wake up one day and chose to modern-ify Amy and make her a shallow, strong female character like modern media tends to do nowadays, Amy has earned through on-screen development every single impressive feat and recognition she is getting, as a character Sonic Team and everyone else that worked on her character got her to this point of being the character she is today, they didn't make no shortcuts. There is no contradiction between past and present interpretations, it all feels like a natural evolution, if anything she's the most consistent main cast member of the bunch.
    My only issue with all of this is how they're trying to push Classic Amy more, with her IDW Classic Era appearances (and in a way even the way they advertised her for Origins Plus and Superstars) showcasing a kindhearted and clumsy but also strong-willed, kickass and determined Amy which undermines and quite frankly squanders ALL of the development she got throughout the Adventure Era.

    • @TheRealMightyEmperor
      @TheRealMightyEmperor  Год назад +1

      I don't think I said it was a contradiction. It is indeed clear that Amy was always meant to and did progress. However a lot of that progression came off screen in-between games with no explanation and required fan ideas to make sense. Look at her from unleashed, gens and lost world which were not to long ago, then what we have now. Also some feats like the IDW giant hammer really do just come out of no where.
      Classic Amy I understand is to be more inclusive with a now popular character, its just unfortunate it messes with her character arc

    • @theinktician
      @theinktician Год назад +1

      I'll be honest - the key developmental points you listed do not lead into "leader of an entire military" under any circumstance. Mind you, you could say none of the cast she be in that position. But of course you can point to the 6 off screen months of Forces to excuse any change in character. Its 6 months and its a war - but god that sure is convenient. Cause a lot of her core was gone after that. You say there were no shortcuts, but the examples you showed were far removed from the current games. Would you say they gave her growth a plateau til Forces/IDW then? She should be allowed to still have her rash nature and wear her heart on her sleeve. When she became the "level-headed leader" of the cast, her personality was flipped on its head - and with all the moments that defined her development NOT addressing these in a way they told her to change, she had no reason TO change/grow from them. So yes, she did change over night.
      I also DONT think she downgraded in SA2 since she was able to get to Prison Island on her own, and break into the cell room. It was just a matter of having less screen-time. Yet, she still showed no sign of being the same she was at the start of SA1. She was who she was by the END of that game
      And yes, I agree whole-heartedly about the last statement. The Classic Amy push is a borderline retcon and HONESTLY should be something focused on the current Amy. They could be using this time to fill in the gaps. What happened while Sonic was gone those 6 months?

    • @KOTSOSMC2002
      @KOTSOSMC2002 Год назад +1

      @@theinktician Amy was not the leader of the Resistance in Forces, Knuckles was as acting commander, Amy was in charge of communications. As seen in the latest issue of IDW as well, Knuckles left the Resistance after the war ended and went back to Angel Island leaving Amy to pick up the pieces. Amy pretty much cleaned house and turned the Resistance into the Restoration. Amy going from teen adventurer to communications officer during the war for half a year out of necessity to kinda-hardened-leader of a restoration effort (which feels VERY in character too, her handling a "Let's get around world back to normal" type of effort) feels natural and not at all forced or rushed. Would I have loved to see more of it? Abso-mondo-lutely. Does that make it rushed in its current state? Not at all, it did not happen overnight whatsoever. And with everything that's happened in the IDW comics, by issue 60 she's doing some crazy things and you can most definitely believe it, she's been through some $#&!
      My examples weren't necessarily far removed from post-Lost World Amy, it's simply the fact that post-06 Amy, similarly to like 95% of the Sonic cast, was either barely there or nowhere to be seen until Generations at best and Forces at worse. Amy plays the love interest in Unleashed and Black Knight, drools over Sonic in Colors DS and (just like everyone else) just exists in Generations. Every spin-off that included her in-between those years didn't bastardize her or devolve her, she didn't lose her development, she just wasn't an active cast member, she was just there without a role to play. The little bits of her we saw in Lost World showed her as her usual compassionate and caring self but also assertive and slightly feisty (she just pushed the Guardian of the Master Emerald like he's a lil' kid), she appeared a lot less childish. Team Sonic Racing (which fits best in-between Lost World and Forces for a multitude of reasons imo) comes around and she's again, compassionate and pleasant but also careful and arguably the most mature of the group, she's practically babysitting the rest lol. Forces (barely, her portrayal in it is very forgettable) and IDW carry and develop that characterization forward, it all feels natural and like a step-by-step process, as a guy that hasn't skipped anything this all feels completely coherent.

    While I still enjoy Amy taking the role as the headstrong, but still enpathetic and crushing on Sonic, leadership role that she took on in the IDW comics. And it's sort of been translated into the games, just not in the mainline games... more specifically, I'm referring to how she takes the charge in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, partially because it's HER birthday. (This does not count Forces, considering just how little thought went into every decision in that game's story, even with Amy leading the resistance.)
    But at the same time, as great as it is, myself and others have good reason to think that this change was made because SEGA refuses to let the Archie and SATAM characters return, thus giving Amy the role that her old friend Sally used to have...as we don't have Sally to take the leadership role anymore. As you said, definitely does it make it feel more sudden, even as she has become more dedicated with her empathy in the Meta era, even in the highly criticized Sonic Lost World.

    Very interesting video. Personally I'm not a fan of making Team Sonic a quartet by including Amy, like how they've been doing for the most recent projects (Origins, Frontiers and Prime). Idk why but putting her to go in adventures with the original trio just seems quite off to me, I mean she's always been a part of the main cast but I'm much more of a fan of when she just so happens to be involved with the main plot, either by chasing after Sonic (CD, SA2 and Heroes) or trying to help others (SA1 and 06). Not to mention making her constantly hangout with the boys just undermines Team Rose completely in my opinion, I mean in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog she didnt even invite Cream and Big to her own birthday party (Not like SEGA even remembers Cream anyway). But hey, thats just my opinion about how I feel on Amy's usage in the recent times.

    I do not understand this idea that oh, Amy must have a connection to magic… No she doesn’t.
    Yes, she uses tarot cards, but tarot cards aren’t magical. Using tarot cards does not involve any sort of magic. Using tarot cards does not mean that you have some sort of special magic power, cause here’s the thing, any person can use tarot cards if they just learn how to. Because tarot cards aren’t about the user have some kinda special magic, they’re about using the cards as a way to reveal hidden truths of the past, present, or future.
    Basically, the cards aren’t magic, they’re just a tool you can use for doing some self reflection on your life and what future you might end up creating for yourself. Or you can use them as just a fun game.
    It feels like such a common misconception that Amy must have magic powers cause she uses tarot cards and therefore she’s special. Which, is just such an ironic misconception since… the whole reason Amy was created to be a girl that into tarot cards… was to show how she’s not special, she’s just an average little girl. Cause back then, in Japanese culture, a girl being into tarot cards and the occult was a really popular, common interest for girls to have. Sega wanted to show how Amy was just a basic girl, so they gave her a basic girl hobby: being into tarot cards. But of course, in other cultures, tarot cards aren’t so popular, and that’s where the misconception that Amy must have magic powers comes from. It comes from a disconnect between different cultures and a lack of understanding how tarot cards work.
    Also, Amy turning invisible in Sonic 06 wasn’t a power, it was just a glitch in the game that made her character model disappear cause Sonic 06 was a broken mess.

    • @TheRealMightyEmperor
      @TheRealMightyEmperor  Год назад

      No Amy going invisible was a power, there is even a question mark hint that tells you how to use it. in a similar vein, Amy has been shown numerous times doing small amounts of Magical things regardless of is he is aware of it or not. The cards did tell Amy she would meet someone special in the middle of no where, and she then met Sonic as a result. She has an uncanny ability to sense Sonic and in some media other characters point that out. Magic does not have to equal throwing ice blasts and Amy's is very understated like I outline in this video.

      This argument always has some holes on it, if the cards and her are not magic, how did Amy knew specifically where to meet Sonic? And especially get there before he arrives? How does she know where to find him or other people? Why can she carry what looks like a toy hammer and do insane damage with it?

    • @lezlue2273
      @lezlue2273 11 месяцев назад

      Amy’s encounter with Sonic wasn’t magical, it was all coincidental. Tarot cards are not that specific with what they tell you. A tarot reading can tell you vague messages like that you’re going to meet someone and fall in love, but they can’t literally tell you the exact name of the person you’ll fall in love with. So, there is zero chance that the tarot cards told her that the specific person she’ll fall in love with is Sonic the hedgehog. Tarot cards are not that specific. Chances are, this is what happened: Amy was already planning on visiting Little Planet, so, she did a tarot reading to see what would happened when she went there. The reading told her that she would be in danger, but that she would also meet someone and fall in love. So, Amy went to Little Planet, expecting to meet her true love. She was already there when Sonic arrived, and when Sonic happened to come across her, Amy assumed that he must be the one she’s meant to fall in love with. Then she was kidnapped, and when Sonic saved her, this cemented the idea in her head that Sonic must be the one she’s supposed to fall in love with. Amy’s belief that the tarot reading would come true is what turned it into a self fulfilling prophecy. She arrived there expecting to fall in love, so, her brain ended up making that happen. There was nothing magical about her meeting Sonic, this was just a case of perceptual expectancy.

      @@lezlue2273 If we don't take Origins into account, there's no indication that Amy was already there when she made the prediction, much less know where to go, she just made it and knew where her destined encounter is. And even with Origins, Amy still had to wait to climb up on the chain because the dwarf planet appeared in front of her (and that she cheated on her prediction which often results in bad fortune). We don't lose anything by making the cards magic (which is what Frontiers plans to do), Amy stopped being normal after the classic era was over, hell, she stopped being that after CD was over and even then we have to take into account she climbed a huge chain thousands of feet in the air before Sonic got there, and got through the bottomless pit of Metalic Madness Act 3, all without any help.
      And again, it still doesn't resolve the matter of "how does Amy know where to find anyone at any time?" because it's not the first time that she does that, she found Rouge with Emerl after running away from her the first time in Battle, she felt where to find Chocola and Froggy in Heroes, she almost crushes Espio and he remarks Amy has a sharp intuition in one of the Sonic Channel comic strips (even if she didn't know it was him), not to mention the number of times she DID go to find Sonic directly (even if she was wrong, she still got to find A hedgehog). To say that Amy doesn't at least have at least a sixth sense would be strange because none of these are coincidences, she'd be walking in circles if she didn't know where her person of interest is.

  • @Crow_Rising
    @Crow_Rising Год назад +3

    The thing I find most jarring about Amy is that her entire character development arc apparently happens canonically within the same year. Despite characters having had on screen birthdays such as Sonic in Generations, the canonical age of Sonic remains 15, which means the characters around him haven't aged up either. This means that Amy's first appearance in Sonic CD and her most recent appearance in Frontiers happen within a year of each other in-lore. In that time, she's changed in personality dramatically, going from a meek but cheery Sonic fangirl to a borderline Yandere stalker with anger issues to a more mellowed out, grounded, and mature individual who feels all grown up.
    To put it simply, I don't think even SEGA really know or care who Amy is. She seems to exist as a trope of what kinds of characters girls of the particular decade consider popular. From the "damsel in distress" getting rescued by a strong, brave, handsome hero in the 90's, to the more assertive, dominant "whatever I want, I get" girl of the 2000's, to finally the more strong and independent "girlboss" of the 2010's. Whatever type of character girls of the time period seem to want to fantasize being, that's the kind of character Amy is portrayed as.
    I feel like this is an issue because it makes her less of a standalone character. Sure, the other characters have often changed dramatically over time as well, but they have still changed within their own valid tropes. Sonic's the laid back but snarky "Too cool for school" type, Tails is smart and quick thinking kid sidekick, Knuckles is the hot headed punch first and ask questions later type, Shadow is the edgy rival, etc. Amy though, the trope she's molded by is just "The girl". Much moreso than other female characters. Cream is "The child", Vanilla is "The mom", Rouge is "The secret agent/Gem thief", Sticks is "The conspiracy theorist", Blaze is "The stern princess", Marine is "The roudy Australian mechanic", etc. Amy is the only one who changes so radically over time because her trope is the one most vague and time context sensitive. She is her gender with no other consistent substance.
    I also feel like it wouldn't even be hard to give her a consistent personality either. She's established as being into fortune telling with Tarot Cards, She cares about Sonic more than anyone else, and she's often something of an independent wanderer who isn't necessarily against traveling with friends. She's self trained in Martial Arts, and something that could be fitting as well is making her a hammer enthusiast. Bringing all this together, her trope could be boiled down to "Traveling fortune teller with a fighting spirit".
    She could be a very similar character to Avdol/Abdul from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Miyu from Mega Man NT Warrior. Have her be one of the more knowledgeable characters and know the general gist of future events before other characters due to her predictive talents, and have this be the source of her confident demeanor.

    • @TheRealMightyEmperor
      @TheRealMightyEmperor  Год назад +2

      Just a quite lore thing, but the characters did canonically age up from the Classic to Adventure times (Some anyway, Sonic became younger and Knuckles became older for instance), but that doesn't matter because now Sonic does not use official ages. So they can age and have birthdays but we will never know the numbers so that Sega can stop worrying about it.
      As for Amy, that is a pretty good way of looking at what has happened to her character, especially how you point out the other girls really don't suffer in that way.

    Knuckles: strength

    But I highly doubt they would go that way and it definitely seems like she's more of a blend capacities wise of sonic and Knuckles. In a way, I wouldn't say it's jarring her improved skills, since self improvement is at the core of Amy's character. In Adventure one she states that she will get better to make Sonic and the boys respect her. In the classic archie/idw comics she does the same. In Sonic Battles she goes through a massive boxersise training to become stronger and fitter. I have an entire video going over Amy's history. I am not discrediting her, but those examples are shaky at best. The Knuckles into a tree thing was a gag (And not a good one), Sonic Battle is not canon and gets many things wrong (For example it is incompatible with Sonic Heroes) but Sega does seem to have lifted some elements such as Amy's boxing training. They did not shake the earth though, they shock the very local area signified by a screen shake on the gameboy to let the player know it was heavy. Sonic X also is not canon, besides I did say she could always hurt things with her Hammer, but what we seen in recent IDW is well above anything Game Amy has ever shown before.
      The leadership things has calmed down but is still their in Eggperial city as well - and Amy is allowed to contribute and lead - but as I say in the video it starts to leech away the organic leadership Sonic would usually assume.

    When it comes to stepping into other characters' areas of expertise, there's actually a lot of crossover. Knuckles is said to have strength equivalent to Sonic's speed while also being extremely fast, giving him strength in the highest levels compared to other characters. This allows other characters to also possess super strength without necessarily booting Knuckles out of his strongman post and even in real life many people can have similar skill sets. Shadow already shows off extremely high strength levels but isn't necessarily on Knuckles' level. Having Amy be ridiculously strong wouldn't necessarily boot off Knuckles; Sega would just have to have Knuckles showcase his immense strength in a more drastic way than other characters.
