  • Learn the steps necessary to start a 2-color brioche project, worked in the round.
    PLEASE NOTE: in the video where I say to twist the colors at the beginning of round... don't! I'm going to eventually re-shoot this and omit the twist. When you come to the end of round, move the yarn that you're no longer using out of the way and pick up the new color from underneath without twisting. It will ensure that your work is fully reversible!

    A tutorial to knit brioche rib, in the round, using two colors.
    Knit Along
    What you'll need:
    - 16" circular needle in a US 8 (or DPNs, your preference)
    - 2 colors of worsted weight yarn (I'm using Wooly Worsted in "Saffron" and"Aqua" from Ewe Ewe Yarns)
    - Stitch marker
    Here's the written version of what I'm speaking about in the video.
    Abbreviations:
    - brk: brioche knit (knit the st together with its wrap)
    - brp: brioche purl (purl the st together with its wrap)
    - sl1yo: slip 1, yarnover (with the working yarn in front, slip the st purlwise, creating a wrap as you move the working yarn into position to brk or brp the next st)
    Cast on 80 sts (if you are using DPNs you may cast on fewer on each of the 4 needles, ensuring that you have multiples of 2 on each needle).
    Round 1 (setup round, Color 1): *K1, sl1yo; rep from * to end (last st worked is the sl1yo).
    Round 2 (BRP rnd, Color 2): *Sl1yo, brp; rep from * to end.
    Rnd 3 (BRK rnd, Color 1): *Brk, sl1yo; rep from * to end.
    Rep [Rnds 2 and 3].

    Thank you! I have wanted to try this technique forever, and finally found the yarn and pattern to tempt me to take the plunge. FAIL! I've been going around and around, having patches where everything looks good, but mostly epic messes of several different types.
    Your video is one of the best I've ever seen on RUclips, in terms of quality -- almost totally steady in terms of camera and hand position, perfectly lighted, colors of the yarns and even of the needle had great contrast and distinctness (for visual clarity), and your voiced instruction was perfect -- not the endless verbiage of some, that go on and on but don't manage to convey much instruction.
    Your instructions are clear and pretty concise. The result -- I finally see what is the chief mistake I'm making, and can't wait to tear out the mess I've got, start over, and finally get the result I've been hoping for! THANK YOU! :D
    My mistake: I somehow got the impression that the yarn overs were different from regular yarn overs, so I was doing the YOs on the knit rows backwards! Disaster. I can't thank you enough for your beautifully shot, clearly explained video! (My project is a gift, but I love the tan and aqua combination so much, too, that I may have to make something like that for myself when I'm done.)

    This is a very good video. I almost have this down. On your first stitch of round 3 you say you are purling. Looks to me like a knit stitch. It is that very stitch that is messing up my work, other than that it is beautiful. That whole row is a mess for me. Love to know what I am doing wrong there.

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  6 лет назад +1

      You are right, Arlene. I do say purl - how embarrassing! Clearly it is a brioche knit stitch. I apologize. I must have missed this in editing! If you work that first stitch as a brioche knit you should be right on track to work the rest of the row.

    When I see you doing the third round (returning to the saffran color after the first row of aqua), you say "slip one, yarn over" but you're doing the opposite. You're bringing the yarn to the front and then slipping one. Am I crazy? Does the order between slip one and yarn over change depending on which round? Thanks in advance!

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  6 лет назад

      Sl1yo, said as slip one, yarn over is the name of a particular step intrinsic to brioche. The action of slipping the stitch is done before the yarn over is created, though, promise! ;) It's just done as one movement so it may look like the yarnover happens first. To break it down for you since I may do it too quickly in the video, the step is to move the working yarn to the front (or if you've just worked a purl st it's already in the front), slip the next st purlwise (which is the slip part of sl1yo) and then move the working yarn over the RH needle into position to either knit or purl the next stitch, which is what creates the yo part of sl1yo. I hope this helps!!

    I am so frustrated, I have 156 stitches on my needles and have knitted 2 rounds. The 3rd round according to the pattern is a knit round, I have used your example here on your first round but when I come to the end I have 1 last stitch to knit NOT sl1yo... I started the round like you did with a knit stitch. Why am I ending with a knit instead?

  • @sarawackadoo
    @sarawackadoo 5 лет назад

    I think I have figured out the knit row but I'm confused by one thing. In the video it says to first slip one and second yarn over. But then she contradicts herself and says first brinf yarn to the front and then slip the stitch. So does it matter when you make the yarn over? Otherwise, everything was really clear and sooooo helpful!

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  5 лет назад +1

      This trips up a lot of people. I can't take any credit for coming up the term "sl1yo"; I'm simply using the terminology provided by the industry. However! To work a sl1yo - the first step is to bring the working yarn to the front between the needles (or leave it in the front if you're working a purl row), then slip the next stitch, then bring the working yarn to the back (or all the way round to the front again if you are purling) creating the yarn over. So TECHNICALLY the slipped stitch happens first but depending on how quickly you work the combination of movements I can see how it appears that the YO is worked first. Happy brioche-ing!

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  5 лет назад

      Oh dear - that's no good! Just to clarify, when you finish rnd 2, you should be ending with a brp. I wonder if that's maybe what you're missing? The last stitch from the previous rnd should be the sl1yo (the slipped st and it's accompanying yarn over) that you will then finish rnd 2 by brp'ing. If that's not the solution, shoot me an email through my website (unapologeticknitter.com) with a picture and maybe we can sort it out.

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  8 лет назад

      Hi Paula - you'll want multiples of 2 since brioche is worked in 2's (generally... there are some exceptions 😉). So whether you have 30 sts or 60, it won't matter so long as it's an even number! Good luck!!!

    I have tried this pattern a few times, casting on 48 and 50 stitches. After working with the second color, I end with purling two stitches, then having two stitches left. I am not sure where I am going wrong. Does it have to do with the number of stitches I am casting on?

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  8 лет назад

      Hi Rebecca - it's not the quantity of sts you are casting on to be sure. You want an even number of sts - any even number so 48 or 50 should work just fine. Before I am able to help you too much more, I just want to make sure I understand what you're saying: you're getting through the setup row just fine (with color A), ending with a sl1yo and then starting the next round, with color b, with a sl1yo and ending with a brp? Or are you not even finishing round 2 correctly? If you'll get back to me with this information I can likely help you suss it out. Or you're always welcome to email me, photos always help. My email address is on my website - unapologeticknitter.com.

    • @trillianmcm
      @trillianmcm 7 лет назад

      I believe the number cast on does make a difference. for instance, if you cast on 48 it will give you an extra 24 stitches in the next round, i.e., 72. but if you cast on 50 (extra 25 stitches in next round), you will have 75 once you do all the pass over stuff. from my extremely limited experience, the I find that an *odd* number is better. So, go with 50 (1/2 50 = 25) => 75. The preferred number should NOT be divisible by 4.

    • @chrismay3669
      @chrismay3669 7 лет назад

      In brioche a stitch with its yarnover is counted as one stitch, so you are not adding extra stitches. Any even number will work.

    I have tried to start the Frost on Roses hat on Ravelry five different times. But where the rounds end/begin, I have this strange laddering that looks like I'm just knitting a yarn over. It's frustrating and confusing. Do you have any tips on how to fix this?

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  7 лет назад

      Nicci Widener hmmm... without seeing it, it's kind of hard to diagnose but I suspect it's either a tension issue (which is very common with brioche, IMO) or that the final stitch isn't being wrapped properly. When we get to the end of a round, the final stitch, when it is mean to be worked as a sl1yo, tends to not get wrapped because things get confusing with the color change. So make sure it's being wrapped (just playing Devils advocate, you may be doing it just right). But my larger suspicion is that it's tension. Mine gets tighter, yours may get looser. I find it tends to sort itself out with blocking. Which I know sounds like a lame answer but without actually seeing it I can only guess. You're welcome to email me a photo or video for further help if you'd like.

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  6 лет назад

      SL1YO is a brioche term and I feel its important to use the terminology that you are going to see in patterns. However the mechanics of the actual step aren't important. The most important thing is that, with the working yarn in front, you slip the st purlwise, and then move the working yarn into position to knit or purl the next stitch which creates the yarnover.

    • @TheUnapologeticKnitter
      @TheUnapologeticKnitter  8 лет назад +1

      I find the long tail cast on is usually stretchy enough for me however if you have a tighter cast-on I'd recommend the Twisted German cast-on. It's a bit looser and looks very pretty and isn't hard to learn. I don't have a video yet showing this cast-on but New Stitch A Day has a great tutorial that shows it!
