    I have a degree in beef production and management. I’m really enjoying the conversation with the vet. It’s been a long time since I delved into that at the detail that he is going into; however, I’m glad you guys are looking at it. I don’t have enough cattle right now to Get to close into that data. Surprisingly, I just passed your ranch on I 90 not too long ago.

    Interesting information about managing the cows, calves and the way things like eating and weight gain and the quality of the meat. There’s nothing like setting down to what looks like a nice juicy ribeye and cut into it to find the stringiest toughest piece of meat you’ve ever had to deal with! This was interesting. I quit the cowboy trade back in the late 80's in the S.E. Oregon S.W. Idaho Region. It was still 1880's technology so to see this is almost Science Fiction to me.This is great. Wish it had been around back then. Still have to get out in the blizzard to take care of the cows though. Somethings don't change a whole lot.

    Hi Carson, it was interesting to hear about what factors go into how tender the meat is from the cows. After seeing videos of you working out in the cold and snow it was good to see you all talking around the table in a nice warm house. Hope this cold and snow now is not a sign for the Winter to come. Enjoyed the drone footage of the feeding and seeing the snow patches on the backs of the cows.

    Dam, that looks frozen assed cold out there, when the snow doesn't melt on the cows backs. Don't miss that side of ranching one bit, sitting in front of the fire with a whiskey and a steak dinner. Enjoy team. My nephew is a Ringer/cowboy on one of the largest Cattle Stations in Australia, enjoying his gap year before starting an Engineering degree. He sent some pics the other week, it 35 degrees celius up in the Northen Australian outback and he's loving it. He has 6 Australian Stock horses in his string. One for each of the working days, they get Sundays off. He's working on the bull operation, each year they turn out over 4000 bulls. yep that's right. They run a composite breed of bosindicus/bostorous which looks a bit like a red Angus/Santa cross, with performance figures up there in their tropical north suitable for all global markets, live, boxed, Asia, US and local steakhouse. Out there running on ranches larger than Texas, if they can't give birth, they die, so they breed for smaller birth weights but rapid growth with a sale age between 2 to 3 years depending on which market and if they go into the lot for finishing. Staggering size and production numbers.

  • @csrlivestock7080
    @csrlivestock7080 2 года назад +5

    Hi Carson thanks again for a interesting video. Discussing a bit on birth weight. I went to a Angus Bull sales a couple of years ago and a Angus Stud master opened the sale. Discussing traits on what bulls to select. At the time low birth weights was a popular topic as commercial cattlemen were endeavouring to achieve ease of calving. The stud manager made at comment I have always kept in mind. Continual selection of bulls for low birth weight can lead to producing animals that may loose other desirable traits like carcass to live weight percentage and smaller eye muscle as a example. To concentrate on one trait can leed to diminished results in other desirable traits. A realistic acceptance of a good selection of desirable traits rather than going overboard on a single trait is I feel a good management practice. From Down Under

    • @nesandhiller5323
      @nesandhiller5323 2 года назад

      He was absolutely right. Continual selection for a single trait puts other desirable traits at risk. Takes a long time to climb back up that slippery slope of single trait selection.

      Thanks for your reply, we saw the same many years ago with polled cattle. In the early days people trying to get polled cattle lost other features. Not referring to Angus or other natural polled cattle. Brahman, Herefords are two examples.
