With finals right around the corner I feel like a lot of us relate to this right now. I’m definitely guilty of multitasking and not really focusing on tasks so thank you for the tips to get out of this bad habit 😅🙏🏽
I procrastinated studying until I'm desperately grinding and every time I make a submission I crash really hard but I struggle really hard with giving myself a break so it never calms down.
Thank you so much! Here's my summary: - multitasking: ability to actively work on two tasks at the same time - task switching: working simultaneously two tasks at the same time Disadvantages: 1) perform taks slower 2) make mistakes 3) risk a breakdown - Important tasks (deep work) hold greater value. They get you closer to your goals - Support tasks (shallow work) help you accomplish your high value tasks more efficiently but they don't require the same level of brain power and creativity => engage in solid single tasking or mono tasking 3 tips: 1) use isolated time blocks for high value tasks 2) admin tasks, planning and organization or highly competitive tasks can be done during a time where you predict you'll be interupted 3) respect breaks: breaks help efficiency and quality of all the work you produce
It’s so hard to not multitask because when doing only 1 thing at a time, the pace feels so slow. It’s almost painful. I think, “This is too easy. I can amp up the difficulty.” Maybe it’s about recalibrating our brain to be comfortable with only doing 1 task at a time.
I love what you said- it’s almost like our brains are used to feeling in a “difficult” state. So sad. We aren’t meant to go through life this way. I think a lot of us find our self worth in what we do. Ultimately once we finish a task and still don’t feel more love for our accomplishments we find another task to persue when really we are pursuing feeling proud of ourselves.
As I was watching this video on my laptop, I really tried my best not to go to instagram or any other social media just to focus and understand the whole idea that you are trying to convey. And it was really hard as I am experiencing burn out for the last 5 months. Hope I could be back at my track and so are those who struggle with this problem. Thanks for your wonderful video. It is really helpful
Literally saw this video right now where I planned on having breakfast, listening to a podcast and planning a lesson simultaneously, because "it's more efficient" that way. I just feel so stressed that my mind goes "just finish these tasks all together in an hour, so that you can chill the rest of the time" because my body is literally craving to not do anything right now. This video was really eye-opening and I enjoy watching your videos and listenting to your soothing voice! Greetings from Germany
You got this! It's difficult in the beginning but as we get accustomed to "single-tasking" more often and start seeing the advantages, multitasking like that stops being a natural choice :)
Thank you for talking about this. Focusing on one task certainly gets that one task done more thoroughly but other tasks don't get done if the one task takes too long. Also, I find students don't have a ton of freedom when it comes to the timing of tasks. It's actually a faster paced environment as far as I've seen. Things are always expected to be done 3 days ago or longer after you just got assigned it that day. In my experience, work is slower depending on the job.
Thank you, Mariana! This is a very timely video as I'm trying to find my way out of this downward spiral... I also know I'm not the only one in my office feeling burned out and overwhelmed by the constant flow of work, so I'm going to share this insight.
I'm so curious on how the driving brain scans were acquired hahaha. Thank you so much for the information, I'm a 1st gen cognitive neuroscience graduate student and your content has helped me very much with time management, among other tools that help me navigate academia easier.

So true! (1) Do things one at a time, (2) be consistent and (3) plan in advance -- your magic potion for good grades.

Even watching you switching between the two tasks made me feel tired. Thank you for reminding us to focus and prioritise.
