As someone who runs a small sports photography business for the local high school, once you get in with the schools it's easy to grow from there. I'll put my game photos from all my sports on my FB page watermarked, and the images on my business website for sale, obviously w/out a watermark. Just from digital sales and prints I can make anywhere from 2k-3k a year. And I've had the same experience as him with this leading to sr. portrait offers as well as game I'm just paid to show up and cover for private leagues and such. I've also caught on to the game day style photos and have been putting some out as well. They are INCREDIBLY popular these days and are a great thing to do if this if your area of work.

Great advice! This is actually how I started getting paid photo gigs myself. I had been a hobbyist photographer for many years. Then 9 years ago, when my oldest son started playing Jr. High Sports, I started busting out my Canon 40D paired with a 70-300 and Nifty Fifty at his Football and Basketball games. I started sharing the photos on social media and became popular with all the other parents. Next thing I knew I was being asked how much I would charge for other photography work. I started out charging minimal fees for mini sessions and photographing other games that my son did not participate in. Used the extra cash to upgrade gear and support my "hobby". Fast Forward 9 years, I now have all the gear I have ever dreamed of owning and some that was not even a though in my mind back then. I have paid gigs just about every weekend and sometimes on evenings during the week. Keep in mind I also work a full-time job Monday through Friday. Today my second oldest is involved in sports and so are many of her friends, so I continue to shoot her games and get gigs out of it.
On a related note... now that I have better gear, I have cleaner, sharper images, especially in low light scenarios. I submitted samples of my work to a major high school sports media website and was issued media credentials shortly after. 2016-2017 is the first year I have been granted sideline access to high school football, soccer, baseball and Softball games. It seems to me like, the more I shoot and put my work out there, the more doors open up for me.
I could go on and on about other doors that have opened up, but I will end it right here.
Thank you for all the content you guys put out.

I would think some of the students or their parents would request copies of your work to display at home. Yes?

Ed Waggoner Sr. You are correct. In the past I would provide low resolution digital files free of charge. Now a days I make the available for purchase (small fee) via my website. It has worked out really well for me. I do not make a lot of money off the sports work, but that work gets me other paid work.
I also provide prints for purchase, but most of the time parents prefer the digital files and I just provide them a print release.

@@magalloninstruments I stumble onto this video looking for information, I am a little confused as to have a media pass because well here is my story. Like you I am also a hobbyist photographer my daughter has been in All-Star cheer for 7 years I have been taking pictures of the competitions but in that business is very hard to sell anything because they have companies shoot the venues well she just started high school she is a freshman and immediately she got put on the varsity cheer team she jumped the jr so of course, I would bring my camera to take pictures of her and the cheer team as well as the football game but I was shooting from the bleachers. I had asked her coach if it was possible for me to shoot the girls from the sidelines and maybe the football team she told me she would talk to the coach. Last week I got a call from her telling me what they wanted me to shoot she said the coach wanted me on the side lines and she is asking if I can shoot the homecoming parade the homecoming game and do a mini photoshoot of the cheer team that same night according to the cheer coach this school doesn't have a photographer at all so my question here is, is this what you are referring to when you said a media pass? I mean am I supposed to have a media pass for this school or is it to be able to shoot other schools? If this school doesn't have a photographer what advice can you give me on how to approach a possible opportunity thanks.

I guess every school is different lol. I brought my camera to my local highschool game and just started shooting. And the guy right next me, who was the sports editor for my local newspaper, started asking me questions. I told him I love doing sports photography, and now I work for him shooting high school football games and getting my pictures published on the newspaper. But I don't charge the students or the parents for the pictures, which may be a mistake, but I feel like I get more respect not charging the kids. And now I'm about to shoot my first college football game this year. So all you have to do is just get your foot in the door. That simple.
