📌 It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.
📌 A replacement (second) clutch may be common if the first one was lost very early on (within 1-2 weeks) and uncommon otherwise. It is unlikely there will be another clutch this season. Jackie is still incubating the current clutch.

This is a live bald eagle's nest. The nest is built 145ft up in a Jeffrey Pine tree ~7100ft ASL, one of the highest elevation Bald Eagle nests in the US! It is measured ~5 1/2’ wide and 6’ deep bit.ly/3PoSmP6

Big Bear Lake is ~7 miles long, ~1/2 mile wide, and sits at 6750 ft. ASL. The lake forms thin layers of ice, but never freezes completely, making it a favorite for wintering eagles & many birds. The lake is stocked a couple of times a year.

Quite sad for Shadow as he's still "hoping" for little ones. Sad for Jackie too. These eagles did their absolute best in the horrible weather that they dealt with. WOULDA just been AWESOME to have one, two, or three little ones. We'll, we'll be watching and waiting for next season. I know l am for sure!❤❤🙏🙏🦅🦅

Looking forward to seeing new eggs!
Just an observation right now while watching, I believe Shadow, on the nest. It’s beginning to look more like a fort now with all of the sticks that both of them have brought to build up their nest. They should be proud of it! 😅
At one point I thought they were incorporating the eggs into the nest rather than incubating them. They say that sometimes happens. They will never stop building on the nest apparently.

Will Jackie and Shadow build a new next for next years eggs or do they use the same one?
They have been in this nest for several seasons. Although they have other landing sites and have tried to build a nest in one of them - it really has not been very successful. This is their nest for incubating eggs - the only one.
What makes the pair stop sitting on the eggs? Its so heart breaking.
@michelebarber3531- I agree. I know that hormones , instincts and Jackies’s encouragement ( look how beautifully bonded these two are!! ❤️❤️) play a role in the process of stopping incubation. Take care my friend!
Last year they were off the nest and the ravens succeeded. Looked like the eggs never matured at all from what you could see.
It's their hormone levels. Birds have an instinctual brooding mechanism that kicks in and when it does they will try to incubate anything that looks like an egg. They will even incubate eggs that aren't their own. One male eagle at a sanctuary started incubating a rock he found. When a bird gets broody they will sit on eggs instinctually until the hormone dissipates. Some chickens get so broody that they will refuse to leave their nest and starve/dehydrate themselves if someone doesn't stop them or put food and water next to thrm. It's a very strong instinct! These eagles are doing what their instinct tells them to do. They are not grieving or any of that.
I am aware of the rock story. I’m also aware of eagles incubating eggs and chicks that weren’t their own. Interesting!!

Are these 2 eagles in the prime of their life to breed and have success?
They both have several more breeding seasons - in the past they have had at least 2 successful and now 2 not. One living offspring - female - Spirit.

Jackie had a baby before Shadow named Stormy who fledged successfully. She had that eaglet with her first mate, Mr. B. Shadow was an intruder bird. He intruded on Jackie and Mr. B's nest and refused to leave. They tried to run him off but he refused. Finally, Mr. B left and gave up Jackie to Shadow. Jackie decided to accept Ahadow eventually. Since then Jackie and Shadow have had two eaglets that hatched and one that fledged successfully. They're both young and have 10+ years of mating ahead of them.
