Floyd Rose Specials are notorious for their problems. Here we will talk about a few that are VERY important. Hopefully this video will help you decide to purchase a quality Tremolo System. There certainly are some good Floyd Rose Specials out there... but by and large these have major problems.
    Other Options:
    Floyd Rose Original (Easy Install)
    Schaller Lockmeister (Easy Install)
Gotoh 1996T (Requires Widening Holes In The Body)

I have a guitar with low quality double locking tremolo, it had a cort DL trem. Eventually one of the screw holes got damaged and I couldn't set up the intonation for one of the strings. Effectively totaled the trem. The material was not hard enough. Got a licensed Floyd Rose replacement. Tuning stability is still bad sub standard, every time I pick it up and tune up, it holds tuning for 30-60 min, and when it's out of tune I just stop plaing on that guitar, and pick up another guitar without any tremolo, and I am happy.
TLDR; As hobbist when cheap floyd wears out you will spend more time setting up the guitar and tuning it than playing it.

@@InfiniteDesign91lol I stripped the saddle groove for the locking bolt in my cort trem 😂. I check the dimensions, and you could just buy 1000 series or even original spareparts they have the same dimensions with the cort tremolo.
Cort double locking tremolo is not super bad, as long you don't force the bolt to turn and stripped the groove. They stay in tune quite okay, never have the tuning stability problem, especially after I changed the springs with the gotoh ones.

I just bought one where the previous owner had adjusted the height screws under string tension, and stripped a saddle.
This Jackson FR (2019) seems poorer quality than the Jackson FR (2014) I previously owned, it's lighter and seems to be made of brass alloy.

FACT: Floyd rose specials are usually fine when they are BRAND NEW. However, because they are made with varying quality standards, THEY DO NOT LAST. Every time i have taken a special off of a guitar that had seen any significant play time, there has been SIGNIFICANT WEAR on BOTH the knife edges AND the stud posts. The metal used is often of questionable quality. I ALWAYS try to talk new players out of a Floyd special. If you want a cheap guitar, get a hard tail. Cheap hard tails are fine. But cheap 2 point trems (anything lesser than a FR 1000 series) should be avoided at all costs.

Got a FR Special on a LTD MH350 FR. It's always a pain to put on new strings. In the first week they have a tendency to pop out of the bridge again and again. This really sucks, it's just a lot of work. And it's not because of too thick strings (I'm using 10-52 for drop C#). I avoid to use the tremolo because those little blocks really aren't doing a great job to hold the strings in. So yeah, if I had the money I'd at least replace the parts that hold the blocks with parts from an original FR (but that's about 60€). I think there's a german firm with good qualitiy that builds FRs with the same footprint for about 200€. Once I have the money I'll probably replace the whole tremolo. Can anyone recommend a tremolo system with one that allows keeping the ball ends on the strings and with the same footprint as a FR?

The reason the trem arm doesn't tighten properly, is because the cap is several millimetres 'too deep' (the 1000 series has the same problem), and doesn't tighten down fully.
I've compared the proper Schaller made arm with the 1000 series one, and they are not the same.
Why change the design, even if they use a cheaper metal (the Schaller made one is magnetic and the cheaper one isn't, so it's not made of steel).
It doesn't really matter what metal the arm is made of, the screw cap on the arm should be the same size so it will tighten properly!!!

I heard people say its still a good trem but don't believe it, they are either lying or they don't actually use the tremolo. This system kept going out of tune no matter how much I tightened it down on both ends, nut and bridge. After that the strungs actually started cutting grooves into the saddle blocks so when I pulled up on the tremolo two of the strings popped out from the trem blocks. This was only after a week of owning it! I replaced every bit with a German floyd rose and its perfect! The floyd rose special is truly garbage. I have a 33 year old Kramer Nighgswan with the original 33 year old German floyd rose trem system and I routinely beat the piss out of it with no issues at all. The base plate on the Special is steel but I don't think the knife edges are subject to the same hardening process the OFR and 1000 series are. The saddles are cheap cast pot alloy and very soft metal hence why they fail and also make the trem sound dead. The OFR and 1000 are machined steel and far better quality and should last years. The arm bushings and mount are a whole subject on their own. The original Floyd screw in mount from the 1980s was nice and solid but suffered the "unscrewing itself" issue. The best arm you can get now is the push in arm which I've found to be pretty bomb proof.

Some manufacturers like Schecter used to use the 1000 series floyd, so at least you got steel saddles and a brass block (unfortunately they've cheapened the bridges out and are now using the special), but the 'special' is nothing of the sort!!
Sure you can replace the block easy enough, but even upgrading the saddles is no good, because the quality of the metal is suspect!!! The screws are extremely soft and easily strip, as well.
I have the 1000 series floyd on an import BC Rich and it's pretty good (even the arm 'sort of' tightens up, but not really!! 🤔). I personally wouldn't touch a guitar with a special series on it with a bargepole, because of all the problems they cause.

This man is right, the FR Special is rubbish, it basically gets damaged the moment you put strings on it because the strings pierce the saddles like butter, and the base plate gets damaged and damage the pivot screws every time you use it; unavoidable because it's a non lubricated metal-to-metal abomination. The design of the FR is terribly bad and outdated, why use a a non-lubricated off axis metal-to-metal pivot-wedge when it could be designed with a central shaft and bearings. That's a first-grade mechanical and dynamics design mistake. They keep making trash because people buy it. For instance. Kahler is going in the right direction with their tremolos, at least they have a shaft that rotates.

I could've told you that that Floyd Rose 1000 is KOREAN MADE. Nothing to special to it! It is made from zinc which I don't understand as it is so soft and not recommended for professional instruments of any kind! This is the reason that so many people are having trouble with them. Your best bet is to buy the Gotoh and replace your cheap bastard tremolo. The Eddie Van Halen Musicman guitars all had the Gotoh tremolo on them and are in use to this day. Schaller doesn't make their equipment - a company named BML in Germany makes all their hardware. So in essence they make Floyd Rose tremolos and Schaller as well but neither one make their own. I knew that these new tremolos were of low quality but I never owned one or owned a guitar with one so I only know of the guitars that I have tried at the music stores with them. They look nice but their performance over time is questionable. Thank you for sharing this with us although I got to the party a little late.
