Walled Garden HIGHLY illegal, esp. when it comes to silly proprietary connectors, and prevent you from paying with YOUR bank, and charging people more to buy/use e-books on Amazon and such.
So you didn't noticed they already started to change their products to USB-C before the regulation.. iPad and Macbook already was USB-C, do you think they will stop at half way..? They just gived enough time for accessory makers (because iPhone have way more accessory like iPad and Macbooks..) to prepare to the change.. a sudden decision can bankrupt thousands of company.. like they have 10000 lighting Thermal camera in stock, what they will never sell after the change.. or do you think people will buy a $300 thermal camera when they know they will change their phone soon, and it will be unusable, so they need to buy one more.. because thermal camera became unusable with adapter.. and that is just one example.. so they did it on the right way, gived enough time for the manufacturers to empty their warehouses (on that way the things will become to e-waste at least a few years later, and nobody will bankrupt..)
Watch the press conference. AG Garland explains this well. Having a monopoly isn't the problem. Using your power as a monopoly to lock out other businesses is. I'm not saying AT&T and Comcast don't engage in anticompetitive practice. Only that Apple is the most egregious offender here.
Remember when the US Gov. asked Apple to created a back door for the police to access locked iPhones and encrypted data and Apple answered no and doubled down on the importance of privacy? That is what started this lawsuit.
I was to most degree an “Android Fanboy” until I saw this stance that Apple made against the US Gov. The next smartphone that I purchased was an iPhone and never looked back.
It isn’t, that was many years ago now, under an entirely different administration and it was an entirely different part of the government. The FTC and Justice Department have been ramping up antitrust enforcement since the start of the Biden administration, mostly championed by Lina Kahn, who’d gotten a bipartisan confirmation and now in the Republican Party is cheerleader by Josh Hawley and seems to be reviled by other Republicans Senators, but is still technically bipartisanly popular and is probably honestly one of the few people in government where pretty much everything she’s done has been pretty popular, aside from with the mega corps who are affected by this
I think right to repair is where tthey deserve to be sued for, not this garbage. I for one, use apple devices in part for the strong security a closed ecosystem provides. The scary thing will be that if there's a pathway to download an app without the app store, then it's possible you open a message or click a website and malware is downloaded without you even knowing. Right now, there's physically no code path for this to happen. Create the path in code, and someone somewhere will find a way to exploit it. Apple devices will be way less secure.
@@heyaisdabomb Yeah the right to repair thing is a tricky one. Apple ended up choosing its current path for 2 reasons. First was security. Obviously it wouldn't do to have someone sabotage your fingerprint or faceID scanner to get instant access to your phone. So they started by securing everything from the secure enclave to the fingerprint scanner and serializing all the components so that if even the wires between them were swapped out that functionality would brick. Since their phones are used by people of all walks of life including people with government secrets this is kind of a reasonable consideration IMHO. Second was that a multi billion dollar industry started to pop up where people would buy iPhones, harvest parts out of them, break the phone and then return it under warranty. The stolen parts would then be used to fix other phones to be sold or just outright sold to other repair shops. Apple had an absolute fortune stolen from them by these people and wanted to protect themselves against it. Again, kind of a reasonable response in my opinion. Honestly it does suck. But I'm more mad at people who perform espionage and steal endless amounts of money from Apple by harvesting parts out for ruining everything. In a perfect world none of this would be necessary and we'd have right to repair as a result but it's kind of like seeing a store close down after being repeatedly robbed in a high crime area. Yeah it sucks for the community that it's gone but are you going to be mad at the company or at the criminals who drove them to close up shop?
@@heyaisdabombI agree. The repair issue is an entirely different thing. But to force Apple to open up its App Store to whoever is crazy. There is a reason Apple products have the least amount of Malware and virus issues. They keep downloadable software very strict/limited. This could lead to all kinds of security risks.
@@heyaisdabomb disagree, I should be able to install what i wish on a device ive paid for. its already possible to download apps outside of the appstore WITHOUT jailbreaking or exploiting the device. (look into developer mode and sideloading; altstore and sideloadly are good tools for this) the issue is apple makes this process needlessly cumbersome after the apps are installed. apps expire and need to be renewed after a week (to get around this you need to install a server a pc you use that renews and resyncs these apps every week) and your only allowed to install 3 apps if you dont have a developer account ($100 a year). honestly, if apple removed these two restrictions i would be completely fine with there being no official support for third party appstores, as it would allow those who really wanted to build and install their own apps.
@@GabeSmith-p7jI've been using Android for over a decade and not ONCE have I ever gotten a virus or malware. Stop this security narrative. Android 10, 11, 12 and onward each have gotten consistently better with security. With Samsung phones, there's basically two offerings of security. One coming from Samsung, which is a manufacturer offering and the other is from Google. There's PLENTY of features that are of equal if not superior to Apple. People who have iPhones are just incompetent of knowing what to do with an Android phone.
Well technically the Microsoft case was completely different. Microsoft was using their influence to dictate to small businesses what they could and couldn’t pre install on their computers for their own clients. Microsoft didn’t create the computers and didn’t own the companies selling hardware with their OS. But they were bullying small OEM vendors to force them to not install apps for their customers despite selling them tools to do just that. Google did essentially the same thing and got in trouble for it too. However in Apple’s case they make the hardware, the software, maintain the closed ecosystem and own their apple stores. So the Microsoft lawsuit would be more like as if they started demanding that they would only sell office on the iPhone if apple banned all competing office apps and stopped making their own. It’s not Microsoft’s place to do that and they’d get sued if they tried.
I use iPhone and Mac…so yeah I’m an Apple user. But the issues of allowing devices to communicate well enough cross platform is something that should be fixed. Yes, it’s business. But I do believe the simplest issue of them all with the green/blue bubbles thing should be ironed out for users.
It's more complex than that. There's reasons from a computer science stand point that these things are done as well. Apple created it's own picture and video files that is inherently compressed by up to 80%, called .HEIC files. There's a size limitations in SMS messages that have. to be ironed out, and all the blue message is doing is telling you, is this going through imessage i.e. the internet or SMS, which is through your cell carriers network (not the internet). This gives customers more information, and helps me to know what I can and can't do because android doesn't have the same features as ios. Non apple devices or third party apps opens the ecosystem to malware and viruses. Apples closed ecosystem provides a strong layer of security, even the government struggles to break in as we saw in the San Bernadino terrorist case. You can't mandate a company to build software to work with other devices. Are they going to sue LG because smart things only works with LG devices? What about other companies with their own proprietary systems?
@heyaisdabomb thats bogus. Apple could support RCS that would actually make it more secure for Apple users. Messaging already exists with other devices so it should be to the latest highest standard
As long as u can make calls and send text messages. That’s all that is required for a PHONE! The computer/software tech is different. If u want to be part of the Apple eco system, buy an apple product. As far as the “tap to pay” that Apple hv more of a grasp, then I would ask who came up with the tech? When iPhones first came out, they had an exclusive deal with AT&T for the first few years, so u had to be with AT&T.
Apple already announced, the day after this lawsuit was filed, that they will update iMessage to be compatible with Rcs by next year. So the fact that they can update their app so fast blows holes in your argument. Let alone announcing the update THE DAY AFTER YOU ARE SUED. You should watch the DOJs breakdown. The issue is that apple deliberately makes OTHER devices technology not work or less performative on iPhone. And because of the bad experiences with other devices apple users then shop for apple devices to save the headache. But thats the problem. The DOJ isnt saying you cant have proprietary tech. They are saying you cant build into your device faulty performance if you are connecting to a non apple device, app, product, browser, which apple 100% does hence why it lost in the EU. The USA is just copy pasting the case cause all the evidence is there.
I get some of the things mentioned but I do not get the part about the apple ecosystem. It seams the same as wanting PlayStation controllers to work on Xbox.
It's more like having a multiplat game on Xbox, Playstation and PC and then Playstation only accepting payments for that game done on their platform and payments done on other platforms being ignored even though otherwise it all works cross-platform.
Sorry to break your bubble, but there is nothing like ecosystem, it's just called internet. Non-apple devices communicate with each other like internet but apple devices only communicate with other apple devices like an intranet, intentionally build walls. Apple devices act like a angry women who refuses to talk with other people not because she can't, she can, she just intentionally chooses not to do so, amd everyone else just talks with everyone normally in an open "ecosystem".
@@ykd0011 I get it. One thing that pussed me off in my pixel days was the low quality of videos I would send to apple users. This is one of the best cameras out there but after I send it it looks like it’s from a smartphone from 2010
I as much as I dislike "what-about-isms," Private equity firms in the US are buying up all the single-family homes before they come on the market so they can rent them out at sky-high rates. It's nearly impossible for first-time home buyers to buy a house, which is historically the #1 way wealth is built in the middle class. My point is, there are more important ways that the government should be protecting citizens from corporate greed.
Are there good laws on the books already to go after that though? The Justice Department can only enforce laws that are already there, I think that’s a problem that Congress needs to do something about
this is the free market and there are options to avoid all of this, don't buy Apple, what happens is that loser companies who can't compete due to limitations of their own are being petty and whining like little losers, asking daddy government to intervene in the free market. Apple can do all of those things because the free market is choosing Apple, if the free market decided that what Apple is doing is wrong then we would all vote with our wallets and so far we have chosen that Apple is ok. Apple doesn't have a monopoly! the presence of Android products proves it's not anticompetitive. Apple is just a closed system that works smoothly between apple products for the most part. Catering to most of these demands to make apple products more open will make them janky and make it loose it's appeal to consumers and lower it's value. Android is a viable option for anyone who doesn't use apple devices and apple as a company does not need to change their practices to cater to other companies lack of a better implemented system.
Seriously wtf is this argument. Explain how exactly a more open apple would be janky? You don't have to limit the use of other devices to make your products work smoother together. Oh and btw these are literal monopolistic practices
@@sdfjsd I was saying that the LACK of SIM card slot on the USA models without any benefit is a waste of space. SIM card slots are essential for a phone’s operation and we need microSD as well.
There are too many law school graduates with nothing to do in the US. This is like complaining about why Benz tyres don't fit on a Toyota. This is pretty much going to go after the CAR Industry and to be honest all gadgets. This is serious Nanny State Politics. JUST DONT BUY AN IPHONE if you don't want one.
No, it is not. This is like Mercedes forcing every gas station to pay them some money because they are refueling a Mercedes car. We own our cars, and can actually do whatever we want with them, with iPhones, even after you buy it, it is Apple that is owning it.
it's not just about not wanting to buy an iphone, this was more focused on software and how in simple term apple stays on top, not by making their products better, but by making other products worse. They actively make sure that competing smartphone brands look much worse than they actually are in order to drive the notion that apple is better
It’s nothing like AT&T, assuming you’re referring to the dissimination of Bell. Apple is not the only company selling phones and the software to go with it so they are not a monopoly in that sense. It’s much more like Microsoft, although in fairness, MS was pretty darn close to being like AT&T since they made sure the OS and Windows Explorer were the only software installed on “all” PCs. AT&T/Bell was different because they were literally the only company that could provide home phone service back in the day.
@@housepianist Honestly I don't think this is really like either one. AT&T had a true monopoly and there wasn't any real competition and all the existing phone lines were owned by one company that wouldn't share. It was broken up as a result. Whereas Android outsells iPhone every year. By definition it's not a monopoly. With Microsoft, they had an OS that ran on other people's hardware and released tools to let manufacturers roll out custom versions of Windows pre-loaded with drivers, software, wallpaper packs and more. But when people started bundling firefox into the OEM versions of Windows Microsoft suddenly tried revoking licenses, bullying creators, and more. They released tools designed for a purpose and then intimidated people for using them when they used them according to the license. With Apple, They built nearly everything from the ground up. The hardware, software, app store, APIs, etc. Apple has never made any secrets about how closed their ecosystem is and has marketed it as a hand curated, gated community by design. And people buy it knowing this up front. Problem is, competitors don't like playing by Apple's rules and have been aggressively lobbying the government to tell Apple how they have to do business. And now the government is getting involved.
I mean, Apple is right, it will hurt their campaign to let android devices work with Apple. But still, with Imessage, Apple really did OS devices dirty, what did they ever do to Apple except compete!?
If the pixel watch can't work with your iphone eventhough it works with other brands like samsung, oppo, vivo, oneplus, motorola, etc, then the only explanation is that apple restrict the iphone from working together with other brand... Thankyou for confirming apple's evil monopoly tactics... Appreciate that... 👏👏👏
Like I commented on a similar video earlier, no one is forced to buy and use Apple products. If there's something about the way that Apple does things (and I certainly don't agree with a lot of what they do), switch to something else. This is a free market, after all. I can't stand that Apple charges so much for a simple RAM upgrade, but the choice to pay it when I bought my Mac Mini was still mine. It's funny how it's the most successful companies that the government tends to go after. But I guess the DOJ doesn't have anything better to do at the moment, so why not try to get some extra cash from a multi-trillion dollar company? Apple won't notice the loss of a couple billion dollars.
God forbid the government do something useful like putting a stop to the price gouging going on at the grocery store. If they want to go after big corporations that would certainly do more good than going after Apple.
You haven't watched any of the videos or the law suit? the whole point is that you ARE forced to buy it, using a variety of techniques (walled garden, social norms, quality reduction, incompatibility with other products/phones)...That is literally the whole point of this. They use all tactics to make sure that you are an outcast if you don't have it, and with the amount of market share they have they can do it. Even charging so much for a RAM upgrade, if other tech companies could offer that service the price would be lower benefiting you the consumer. I cannot understand why anyone with any sense would defend a Big Company monopoly
@@CrimsonPhoenix15because the wall garden is a good thing. All apple products is the best if not all the most of product segments. So it is more of a choice. Every company has its own ecosystem, and apple users chooses apple ecosystem. In the wall garden, users feel more secure and has sense of PRIVACY. And most users want to keep it that way. Before there was an issue of COMPUTER VIRUS. And the best thing to avoid computer virus is to buy macbook. The less that apple is OPEN, the better the security. iPhones and Macs receives updates FASTER and for longer years, but cannot be the same with androids and windows. So… uhm. Thats the “wall” that apple made.
@@pakkoignacio1424 "All apple products is the best" - no, its just your only option not the best. I figured out the reason people like you argue for them is because apple is all you know. Its the whole frog in a well analogy, and Apple knows this thats why they can trickle feed you features and innovations and then you act like its the greatest thing when its been out for 10 years. In the walled garden they have a sense of privacy compared to what? I have both the iphone 14 and samsung note 20 even with the iphone as my main phone they offer me the same privacy. Faster and longer updates compared to what? Google pixel offers faster and longer updates, Samsung is slower but just as long updates? You speak as though android is 1 device/company. What windows product are you comparing it to? again hundreds of devices. MAC is outright better for design, while Windows is outright better for gaming. The rest you can make an argument for either and is preference. Virus? you're really going back 10 years ago, its not a thing anymore. Yes there was a time MAC was the safest but now thats just a standard. It had nothing to do with their walled garden but their software which was ahead of its time. I can't comprehend how anyone with a little bit of brain cells can think a monopoly is great. Apple benefited from microsoft losing their monopoly and then turned around and did the same thing now people praise it? The only advantage the walled garden provides is seamless transitions of their products. Which if their products are truly better won't effect them. If they allowed other smart watches to integrate with iphone properly instead of restricting features like they do right now and their product (iwatch) was the best for users then it would remain the best. Stopping other companies like garmin from even trying is the main issue and if you don't see that, then you aren't smart enough for me to respond to again.
Wdym? Tesla is literally the opposite. They just recently opened their entire charging network. They also recently released their 48 volt architecture design for every other company to use for free. Tesla wants the EV space to exceed. Only problem I see with them is repairing cars. It’s hard for owners to do so, but they do allow plenty of third party company to do so if they get licensed from Tesla. Honestly that’s a good thing because 99% of Tesla owners have no clue how to work on their own cars and have none of the tools necessary to do so. Very different from ICE cars. Maybe I missed something that the DOJ has to check. But Apple is a much bigger problem.
More users buy them because of the Walled Garden therefore sending them more money because it's much more of an inconvenience to be outside of an apple ecosystem when all your friends and families are. If there is a proven trends that it's easier to buy their products and they are inconvenience than the day-to-day life or Social Circles because they don't, then that means changes must be made
Actually.. Apple is making it harder to leave.. I have an iPhone with airpods and an apple watch. Every time I upgraded my iPhone, I knew how to use it right out of the box. People in my extended family would switch between iPhone and android every year until they finally gave up on android and stuck with apple. The issue is, about half the US doesn't have iPhones. You should be able to do the bare minimum (that is texting and calling) between devices, but the way Apple is set up has prevented that. I can't tell you enough how much of a nightmare it is texting my Mom from my Samsung, the videos she sends are unusable quality. I have no interest in getting on iPhone again as it was my first phone and just wasn't fond of it. Texting at least should be usable between devices.
Thats why Snapchat and instagram looks terrible on most androids. They can optimise it for each iPhone because there are only 7 models on sale. Sorry, I didn’t quite get the point of the issue here. Apple has had a monopoly for decades now. However, no one is forced to participate in it; if you don’t want to, it’s simple: don’t buy Apple products. So, what’s the problem? Thanks to whoever will explain it to me.
the problem is that Apple's software directly affects competition and lowkey munipulates consumers by pushing the notion that Apple is better than competition. Apple makes sure androids or nonapple products look and feel awful on an iphone (like how they make facetime camera quality look bad if you're using an android, even tho the camera of that android is really good). In other words, they make users feel like the iphone is better by making other products worse instead of making their own products better
That is not the problem here. THE PROBLEM is that if you say got gifted an IPhone? WELL your foot is in the door now. And Apple basically just says "Hey your IPhone is cool, but what if it was cooler?" You need a charger? I mainly want the ability to sideload apps. I’m an Android developer and don’t have to pay any fees to test Android apps on a real device. Apple requires a $99 annual developer fee just to test apps on physical hardware.
There's plenty of 3rd party apps out there that let you sideload apps to iPhone. The main caveat is that without the premium developer account they are limited to a 7 day window (but more than enough if you're developing something and just testing it out).
Well, by this logic they could also gun for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo for the “monopoly” of game stores on their own hardware. This is just ridiculous.
The issue I guess is the lack of other companies going toe to toe with apple Thi yes?? They would. On a Playstation your locked down and forced to buy stuff at extreme prices for 0 reason. Whatsapp is used mostly by scammers, so that's OUT for me. Plus it's owned by Meta/Facebook. No thanks. Discord, sure, but it's an awfully big app for what is needed for using it as a messenger on phone. Big meaning the interface is complicated and too large to adequately use it on a phone. I have and use it but minimally (on phone). WeChat isn't used in the US because it's, again, mostly used by scammers. Signal, Telegram, Session, and Facebook Messenger are the biggies over here in the US. Most people use FB Messenger than Signal and Telegram. Very few people AFAIK use Session.
Doesn’t Android and Google have the same concept of keeping people on their ecosystems? Isn’t Android have more of the market than Apple. This is just dumb.
Worldwide, yes. In the US, however, Apple is a supermajority player in the market at 75% (and climbing) market share and the strangle that Apple has in the market is clear.
Apparently no... Apple is the only one who keeps people on their ecosystem... Im strictly an Apple product user at this point, but this needs to happen for the general consumer. Apple is really hindering innovation. Innovation only happens on their terms. It’s the restriction of devices working with other devices is the biggest issue for me and degrading services on purpose. iMessage really does have a detrimental effect on young teens too and there is no argument there. The EI didn’t go far enough in my opinion. Of course MS is probably lobbying for this too since Apple decided that they couldn’t make money directly off of xCloud. But here in the US, they’re definitely a monopoly in the smartphone industry.
Kind of a weird take since other companies are free to innovate whenever they want. For example at any time Google could roll out support for reactions in the same way that Apple did. And most of the world actually uses apps like whatsapp to do their messaging and not the default texting apps. But more to the point, if you buy an Apple Watch you can pair it with an Android, get basic alerts, install a fair amount of apps to it and so on. Not everything works, but it's good enough that even people like Linus from Linus Tech Tips uses an Apple Watch with his Android. But on the flip side, the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 don't work with iPhones at all. To the point where you can't even activate or pair them. Finally on top of all of that, there's more androids sold every year than iPhones so claiming Apple has a monopoly is a bit weird too.
@@drenathor it’s not at all a weird take. This lawsuit would affect every company across the entire industry, not just Apple. The video game industry, smartphone industry, the VR industry, and etc… we need to quit defending the monopolistic nature of these companies. Apple locks you completely in and for the average consumer there is no way out if you do so choose without a complicated process that the average person isn’t able to navigate. Innovation only happens at the pace either Google or Apple allow within the smartphone industry. You can’t point to one company’s bad habits to justify the company you like bad habits.
@@BruceRichwineJr Here's my problem with that way of thinking though. The only way this would ever be able to be solved is if Google, Apple and every other company got out of the business of selling media, apps and services and ONLY provided the core software and hardware and all used the same 3rd party to provide those things. That way a person's purchases could follow them from device to device. But then that convenience would just mean a new actual monopoly... It would be like me suing microsoft because all of the apps I bought from the Windows App store don't work on a mac and I'm now locked into their ecosystem. I don't think Microsoft should be forced by governments to provide all of their apps for Mac, Linux, Unix and whatever else is out there. I don't think Sony should be forced to provide xBox licenses for any of their customers who want to jump ship to xBox. etc. At the end of the day it comes down to how you view customers. If your thought is that customers are incapable of understanding that buying a PS5 games means it won't work on an xBox, or that buying an iTunes song won't play on an Android, or that buying a Google Play app won't run on an iPad, then I guess one giant monopoly to rule them app and provide total cross platform parity is necessary. If like me though you think customers arn't quite that incapable then hey, people know what they are buying into when they buy it. Or are you going to say that since most video games don't work on Macs that all other companies should be sued and forced to start making cross platform MacOS compatible games?
@@drenathor it’s doesn’t equate in the same way. Yes, the video game industry will be directly affected only by the store fronts just like Apple. That’s a good thing for the consumer. Interoperability is being used to hinder innovation and progress by all the companies. As I said this isn’t just about Apple, but they’re the biggest offender right now. You shouldn’t be allowed to completely lock down and ecosystem where no competition can exist without the permission of a said company. These companies have gotten to big and control every aspect of the digital marketplaces and whether any product with the smartphone sphere will be successful. This isn’t about Apple specifically. This is about the future of the entire industry. MS payed the price back in the late 90’s for the exact practices Apple has employed. Interoperability doesn’t mean android apps have to work on iOS and vice versa, it just means that third party should be given the same level of access to the api’s that Apple gives their own devices. The whole model is anticompetitive and since the 90’s our government has turned a blind eye.
@@BruceRichwineJr Technically the Microsoft lawsuit had nothing to do with this. Microsoft made Windows to run on 3rd party hardware and made tools for their OEM vendors to allow them to bundle drivers and software into the windows installers to create custom offerings for their clients. And then started trying to bully and intimidate those vendors for adding things like Firefox by threatening to kick them out of the program. It was Microsoft's injection of themselves into other companies business practices that got them into trouble. They didn't own the 3rd party stores, the software being installed, the hardware it was being installed on, or anything. They were just one piece of software among many and were using their position to bully people. With Apple, they have their own hardware, OS, drivers, software, store and so on. If Apple wants to make their own rules, it's their stuff. No one is forced to buy it. And saying that Apple isn't allowed to do things that separate themselves from the pack actually does the opposite of what you're alleging and stifles innovation. Take the texting as an example. Prior to iPhone you had a very short character limit and small attachment size. Some companies got around this by letting you type as long a message as you wanted but they would then get split up prior to sending and sometimes this resulted in messages coming in out of order on the recipients side. Most of the world decided to innovate by making custom apps and ditching the old SMS system altogether (things like Viber, Skype, WeChat, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc. none of which work with eachother). Apple decided to innovate to figure out ways to send higher resolution images in less space, and piggy back off of SMS to let users do more with it and eventually rolled out services that worked in tandem with it to let people text money to eachother or even play video games through texting. Obviously though this only works with other Apple phones. Just like I can't expect the digital whiteboard feature in Skype to work with Telegram. Innovation requires that companies be allowed to innovate. And by nature that means they pull ahead of the competition. If everything is interoperable then there's no innovation outside of committee and that leads to stagnation and decline 100% of the time. Sure, the downside is that there are iPhone features that Android users don't have and there are Android features that iPhone users don't have. But fortunately customers can pick what they want and support the companies they want. And in the end, those differences push the entire industry forward. The government should be turning a blind eye to this as long as companies arn't doing things that are illegal.

I don’t agree with some of Apples tactics, but they are seriously not doing anything wrong. They simply have a business to run and that’s what they are doing.
As an iOS developer i'd say Apple is definitely a monopoly. They prevent anyone from hosting app store and charge developers exorbitant fees... any transaction on iPhone MUST use apple payment system and apple charges 30% fee or app is rejected from app store. They do this of course not because they're greedy but for safety and security of their customers. Lately they started competing with small startups by building apps like Journaling, Fitness, Freeform, Notes which will kill other apps in the those categories. Startups spend lots of money on customer acquisition, apple just pre-installs apps with iOS and yes they also control search in App Store... there's simply no way anyone would be able to compete. I think the greatest threat to apple is not antitrust lawsuit, they will find corrupt officials to resolve this, the biggest problem is developers will stop building great apps and will move to different platforms.
Are you moving to a different platform soon? How soon? Are you all done with apple? How long have you had thought about leaving apple yet couldn’t do it?

I buy Apple products because I can trust any software I use on it. If they open iOS then it has no difference from android were I have to be more careful on how I use it. That’s why my iPhone is my daily driver and my android for software I can’t find on iOS. My iPhone has better security. FaceTime and iMessage I do wish I could use on android because I hate having separate messaging apps. But due to lawsuits Apple had to hold back from opening these services in the past and then they saw the benefit and kept them that way. This lawsuit is bull.
Lmao what? If you're so worried about side loading apps or getting them through alternative stores then just... Don't? This doesn't affect anyone's use of an iPhone unless they want more control over it. Apple locking you in to the smartwatch you use doesn't keep you safe and neither does the lack of sideloading ability. Most of my friends don't even know you can sideload an app on their Android phones so it wouldn't matter except to the people that really want it. At the end of the day consumer facing features are always good features

you’re naive. Government keeps pressuring Apple to give them a back door to spy on US citizens but Apple shows middle finger. This is the way US government bullies you.
As a committed Apple Ecosystem user, I am firmly against the DOJ trying make Apple permit other brand devices to have access to the Apple system. For security, privacy, and function reasons, that would be a very bad idea. Also, the DOJ is seriously misrepresenting the issue when they cite the "monopoly" issue. Apple does not have a monopoly. If they did, they would be the only smartphone, watch, etc on the market. They are not. No one is forced to go to Apple to have a phone or other e-device. There are ample competitors out there. I switch to Apple in 2009, and haven't looked back. The apps work in seamless fashion across devices, and there are no worries about invasion of privacy or security. This is one that the government should keeps its nose out of. Obviously, their millions of users are satisfied with the cost products and apps. If they are not, they can easily switch to a non-Apple environment.
Just waiting for the government to ban the nintendo switch now because apparently we customers are too stupid to know it can't play PS5 games when we buy them or something...

I love car accessories from Honda but I started hating Honda because once I wanted to buy a Toyota, Honda "made sure" to make their accessories that I payed for, unusable.
Based on this logic are they going to sue PepsiCo for not selling Coca Cola in Taco Bell and KFC. Sounds ridiculous but it’s the same principle. Companies are legally allowed to favor their own products over that of competitors.
People have a choice of which ecosystem they want to live in. The argument is sad. It’s like saying, I drive a ford f150, but I want to have the rivian display in my truck.
All of Apple's competitors have apps and services that are compatible across brands, software that is easy to develop for and modify, and hardware that can be repaired by third parties at low costs. On the other hand if you buy an Apple product then you are forced to continue buying Apple products to maintain compatibility, use Apple apps to maintain functionality, and go to Apple shops for overpriced repairs. Apple would not be stooping down to anybody's level, they'd be rising up to the level already expected by everyone not being cucked by Apple.

@default3740 No, it's very smart given the nineteen eighty-four culture we are in.
apple fought for many years against right to repair for a reason corporate greed

Convenient how everyone forgets Microsoft was in the same place 25 years ago. Google is in the same place with advertising right now.
No one forgot. They just didn't mention it in this video. Watch the DoJ's press briefing. They alluded to it there. Or watch the verge

It's beyond that, there's a monopsony side too we're developer and sellers are being controlled as well.
Xbox and PlayStation is a duopoly that needs to be looked in too.
The part about apple watches not working with androids isnt even fair, many FitBit and Google Pixel watch devices are Android Exclusive

Apple is less like Microsoft's anti-trust, and more like AT&T's anti-trust.
And guess what they were able 40 years later to merge back with 6 of the 7 baby bells they broke up into.

I mean thats what the SmartPhone Market is supposed to be like.
0:25 this isnt even a fair argument, pixel watch and many fitbit devices only work with android
and why's that?
Well said 👏
You haven't watched any of the videos or the law suit? the whole point is that you ARE forced to buy it, using a variety of techniques (walled garden, social norms, quality reduction, incompatibility with other products/phones)...That is literally the whole point of this.
Will they do this with Tesla too?
Users are always free to leave.
Users are enabling this to happen
Exactly my thoughts. It’s the users’ choice of what devices they’re comfortable to use
apple is doing nothing wrong. People buy their products. So what?
More users buy them because of the Walled Garden therefore sending them more money because it's much more of an inconvenience to be outside of an apple ecosystem when all your friends and families are. If there is a proven trends that it's easier to buy their products and they are inconvenience than the day-to-day life or Social Circles because they don't, then that means changes must be made
Actually.. Apple is making it harder to leave.. I have an iPhone with airpods and an apple watch. If I suddenly decide I want to go back with android, I lose a lot of features with my apple accessories, making it a big inconvenience to switch...

I mainly want the ability to sideload apps. I’m an Android developer and don’t have to pay any fees to test Android apps on a real device. Apple requires a $99 annual developer fee just to test apps on physical hardware.
APPLE WILL NEVER SUPPORT SIDE LOADING.
There's plenty of 3rd party apps out there that let you sideload apps to iPhone. The main caveat is that without the premium developer account they are limited to a 7 day window (but more than enough if you're developing something and just testing it out).

3:19 ever heard of anything called whatsapp? or maybe discord? or WeChat? The default messaging app isnt the only option

They trying to water down Apple. They need to put their energy into getting apple to put more accessories in the box.
The lawsuits sounds like one‘s forced to buy an iPhone 😂

I think it's good that Apple is being sued for its anti-competitive behavior. Even as an iPhone user, I really hope Apple becomes more open. Simple changes like allowing different text bubble colors or faster adoption of RCS messaging would be great.
It is not anti competitive, if you want an open ecosystem, switch to Android, simple. Apple built the iPhone ecosystem and is far from a Monopoly.
If you don’t like it, don’t complain and ask it to change, go buy something else.
Most of my friends don't even know you can sideload an app on their Android phones so it wouldn't matter except to the people that really want it. you’re naive.
