      Thank you. I was using a chrome book. I Brought my external hard drive over to a regular laptop and so far I am getting better results and what I can do with the files. Thanks for your time.
      I don't think Chromebooks are designed for what I was trying to do unfortunately, because it seems like a simple task, to open a zip file and be able to delete files you don't want that have been extracted, and the zip itself

    Great video! Tech info for non-tech people. Thank you.
    I went through your video for the second time for my second backup download and wrote down the steps to make it easier to follow next time. That is one small improvement that you might consider - a step-by-step written instruction to accompany your excellent video. Thank you again! This is great and just what we need.

      Also, he does have a step by step on his website! It's in the format of an article. That's actually how I found this video! Just go to his website mentioned at the beginning of the video and it's all right there. It's about a 2 minute read :)

    Thanks for this a ton, homie! I have 40GB worth of data in Drive (NOT INCLUDING GOOGLE PHOTOS lol), but I have been wanting to create a local offline backup on a 2TB external HDD that I just bought. This helped me figure it out.
    It's truly funny and ironic that I have been using Windows since the 90s (started with 3.1), building custom rigs since I was 8, and yet I couldn't figure this out 🙃

      Same over here, my first computer was a Compaq Presario 486 that came with win 95 (although I worked with MS-Dos in school) was there trying to figure out how to do a proper backup of my account, I got my Gmail account 3 months after it came to life, it was by invitation only on those old days, so really have a lot of crap that wanted to put in a 2TB HDD too. Good luck to you, my friend.

    Hi. I've been trying to download a Google Drive (on Microsoft Edge browser) folder of 6000 screenshots from my phone (4.71gb) onto my computer. After zipping the folder, it seemed to split the folder into 3 zip folders that started downloading separately but at the same time (I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not). The 2nd folder was downloading faster than the other 2 and I assumed that once it downloaded, then the others would go quicker.
    The 2nd folder was well over halfway done and the other two folders were just under halfway done when they all suddenly failed with a message "Couldn't download - Network issue". I tried restarting them one by one but they barely last a minute before failing again.
    Do you know what I should do?

    Hello - I am sure this is a stupid question, but when we got through this process, does it retain the files on Google drive and just make a copy for the download/export? I don't want to remove them, I'm just trying to make a physical copy for safety purposes (I have over 512 GBs in my Google Drive). thank you so much!

    So, I did as described in the video, but my issue is they are "read only files" and not only did it automatically down load Gig's of data to my laptop, but also to an external hard drive that I had plugged into it AND I see no option to delete any of the files that are now in my hard drive or my computer!! why can't I delete takeout files that have been downloaded? Hope you know the solution to my issue. Thanks!

    • @AnsonAlexander
      @AnsonAlexander  11 месяцев назад

      This sound like an operating system issue. It also sounds like Mac, but could be windows. You need to right click on the folder with the file, click "get info" and then give your user account full permissions at the bottom left. You will need to enter your computer password. I don't know the exact steps on Windows but, let me know if you're on Windows and I can take a look.

  • @daringcoyotes

    Just don't use takeout. It's complete garbage and all your files are going to be completely disorganized and lacking essential metadata. I wasted hours on it and am now using drive for desktop(Mac) to individually download folders to keep them organized and not completely useless.

    • @AnsonAlexander
      @AnsonAlexander  11 месяцев назад

      It's definitely not for all cases but if it is still your best option if you want to quickly download all of your Google Drive files. If you're looking for a more organized approach, your method sounds pretty good. I would just try to create a tight folder structure beforehand to save time when downloading folders individually.

    • @daringcoyotes
      @daringcoyotes 11 месяцев назад +1

      can't say its quicker. I've got 700 gigs of data in there and downloading each individual 50g zip file, unpacking them and realizing EVERYTHING is split up wasted an awful lot of time. I'm talking like a folder with 20 wavs being split up into 15 folders with at most 2 mp3s in it. And not huge files either, just lossless versions of my album. Takeout is just terrible software and google should try harder.
