  • It's two months until the 2020 presidential election. What predictions can be made?
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
    With the economy still in recovery mode and the coronavirus pandemic still raging, Donald Trump appears to be struggling.
    But could he really become a one-term president?
    Here, we look at the last two White House incumbents who lost their re-election bids, Jimmy Carter and George H W Bush, to see what went wrong for them and what President Trump could learn.
    With interviews with historian Rick Perlstein, Monmouth University Polling Institute’s director Patrick Murray and former GOP strategist Tara Setmayer.

      Agreed , but that's only one of many flaws in the system ; the judiciary and executive branches of government are entwined when they shouldn't be, it leads to a political element in court cases which really is100% inappropriate. The Electoral College is ridiculously unfit for its purpose, and is indeed un-democratic given the bizarre allocation of votes for each state. The most sinister aspect of U.S. politics has to be the fact that it is driven by money, pressure groups and large corporations, the worst of which, by far is the NRA, which through 'legitimate' threats and blackmail blocks every effort at introducing the gun control that the country so badly needs.

      Your mistake is that you think Trump has to learn anything from anyone, only skill he needs is to be able to read the Teleprompter and Scripts .
      That is all .
      System is the thing that organizes an Economy or Country or Union, not one man , changing names and ppl who act as Presidents every 4 years
      is a joke .
      Real modern System would be Block Chain Democracy . Or Real Time Populous Vote Meaning all Laws would be Spread over the network and public votes .
      There is no need for Representatives any more , we have instant communication .
      We can all participate , very easy .We have that Tech !
      But of course , in modern Governments Representatives dont even READ the Laws they Vote on not because they dont want to ,
      but because its impossible , its too much to Read in such short time .
      Its completely corrupt system , everywhere .
      In that System , Trump needs only to be able to READ the Teleprompter , any skill beyond that is even non desirable .
      It can make problems for the Elite .
      Im not saying The President doesnt do something here and there but its nothing compared to what the Corrupt System destorys in the same amount of time .
      So...
      That is why putting in question Trumps Skills is misleading , he needs no skills other then to Look and Talk Presidential , that is all .
      Sadly i might add but what can you do .

      I know this , so i can tell you you will be glad to hear that Trump will loose .
      So now you are happy .
      But before you get overly happy read my previous comment where i explain that the System is what is tearing apart the Country its not Trump or one man .
      So removing and replacing him will be no solution.Solution can be made but there is no Political will to do it .
      Its already decided , they will start Civil War in America so updating the System and fixing it is not on the agenda .
      You will know that im speaking the truth when you see Biden as President .

    • @wemustconfrontrealitynow3205
      @wemustconfrontrealitynow3205 3 года назад +42

      1980 was a fork in the road for the USA. Choosing Carter would likely have resulted in another four years of mediocre economic performance, but at the end of it, the national debt would have grown by only a reasonable amount; Carter's legacy would have been mediocre, but not disastrous. Choosing Reagan was disastrous. It set the USA on the path it has been on most years since: the national debt growing much faster than the economy, the cost of servicing the debt growing faster than tax revenues, with the result that living standards for most Americans have been steadily declining to this day. With the debt now at
      $27 Trillion, the decline in living standards is sure to continue, and the USA is in the twilight of its world leadership.

    • @wemustconfrontrealitynow3205
      @wemustconfrontrealitynow3205 3 года назад +15

      @@alextyy That is a common belief, that conservative governments limit government spending so as to keep taxes low. There were four surpluses during the 1950's, and the highest marginal tax rate in the USA then was 91%. As JFK took office, the recession which started in 1959 had brought unemployment to its highest level since the war. He needed to get the economy moving, and implemented across the board tax cuts with the highest rate reducing to 75%. This brought revenues and outlays roughly into balance, with small budget deficits. But the boom this led to had the economy growing faster than the national debt, so it was shrinking as a proportion of GDP, and interest on it, although rising each year in the dollar amount, was shrinking as a proportion of budget outlays. In the 1970's, the recession brought on by the quadrupling of oil prices, and later by the oil shortage, saw deficits rising sharply, but what growth there was still enabled to economy to grow faster than the debt.
      Ronald Reagan ran for President promoting a flawed economic plan where across-the-board tax cuts would create so much incentive that people would work more hours so that the extra revenue from tax on their over-time, even at the lower rates, would balance the budget permanently. The big flaw in this idea was that what was also needed was the opportunity to work overtime; that would be decided by the boss, and would only happen if there was a sharp increase in demand for the goods or services of the business. This big increase in demand would have had to be economy-wide.
      Kennedy's tax cuts were affordable because they brought revenues and outlays roughly into line; Reagan's were not, because deficits at the beginning of the 1980's were already much larger than ever before. The flawed policy did not spur overtime worked, or tax revenues, what did surge, because of historically high deficits was the growth of the national debt. No significant cuts were made in Medicare, Social Security (and nor should there have been) or in Defense spending.
      So the huge budget deficits almost tripled the national debt, from $914 Billion to $2.6 Trillion, over 8 years. And this disastrous policy has continued in most years since, apart from 1993-2001. The debt has now reached $27.2 Trillion. You can access a lot of useful statistics by visiting

      @williammathews6825 3 года назад +22

      There is no shortage of better candidates but it takes a lot of resources to firstly be recognised by 350 million people and to secondly get your name on the ballot in all 50 states, which each have their own requirements/processes for doing so. It’s now a battle between Trump and Biden because they’ve established themselves as the main representatives of their respective parties in what is realistically a two-party system (though technically not). They’ve achieved this through different means, but it ultimately comes down to money and unfortunately it’s old white men that tend to have the most. The system is flawed and most people recognise that, but when life gives you lemons you gotta make informed decisions.

    His problem, well one of them at least, is that he takes everything so personally. If you don't like a policy it's because you don't like HIM. Now his ego is hurt so he takes to Twitter and makes things worse. He also never wants to be seen as being told what to do, so he's incapable of taking advice or accepting help. In fact it often seems like he'll continue down a self-defeating path just to spite the people who are telling him to go another direction. Now, with three weeks to go (it's currently Oct 16th) his closing pitch seems to be to just accuse Biden of everything leveled at Trump. He's always done this projecting thing, but he's dialed it up several notches now. Adult son grifting off the family name? "Owned" by a foreign power? Going senile? When we're finally able to dig into the pathology of Trump it's going to be wild, because Trump is, if nothing else, absolutely singular.

      Sweden had insignificantly fewer deaths per capita than the US, although there was no lockdown.
      And with a lockdown that was comparatively harmless to the one in some US states, Germany had significantly fewer deaths per capita than most countries.
      France had a very heavy lockdown, but more per capita deaths than Germany and not that much fewer than the US or Sweden.
      .
      Based on that, I would say that the lockdown was a bad idea.

    I think you are only looking at the surface of these issues. While the economy is always a factor in elections, other things are important, too. Jimmy Carter dealt with a year of Iran's holding of US hostages and the network news with nightly banners: AMERICANS IN CAPTIVITY, DAY 197,198,199... With Bush Sr, he was such a giant warmonger yet a poosy in many ways: he wanted wars everywhere but fought them badly. This safety and seeming strength of the country is just one of many, many other complex issues besides economy, that help Americans decide who to vote for. Do a deep dive, some real research, into those elections. You'll see.

      Saddam was just a convenient ally for the USA, until he invaded Kuwait, under the premise Iraq owed Kuwait money, and Iraq couldn't or wouldn't pay. I mean convenient, because he was basically a check on Iran, who probably had or still might have ambitions on becoming a regional power, especially after the fall of the Shah and the Islamic Revolution and the rise of Ayotollah Khomeini. The problem with Saddam was his brutality to people even in his own coutry, especially people who were Kurds or Shias, who constituted the majority in Iraq. Saddam was a Sunni. His funding of terrorists who were trying to take down Israel didn't help either. Saddam probably had to be removed, and this probably meant by force, since he was unlikely to abdicate. The Iraqis decided to execute him, not the US, who just wanted him out of power, but not necessarily dead. The problem is the USA fired a bunch of Iraqi army personnel, who were suddenly unemployed after Saddam's fall, and later morphed into ISIS. ISIS probably consists of a lot of Baath party supporters in Iraq, which is the party Saddam belonged to. I don't even know if ISIS would exist, or exist in its' current form, if the Iraqi army was allowed to keep their jobs. Geopolitics, especially in that region of the world, is extremely complex and tricky to say the least.

    Despite the public belief, "October surprises" have no impact. After Grant, we had more one term Presidents than two terms. The idea of a one term presidency being a bad thing is kind of a late 20th century thing. Even then from 1976-1992 only one president won reelection, and that was Reagan. The 2000s are kind of an anomaly.
