As an off-road motorcyclist and a gen6 6-speed Goldwing Tour owner(not for off-road 🤣) ...I will NEVER give up my clutch and shift lever, they are my connection to what the bike is doing and controlling it. Plus a real biggie for me.... riding is just more fun with a manual 👍
We agree, thank you for these great comments. For us a DCT = a golf cart that clunks, needs recalibrating often and inexperienced riders fall down on at low speeds, on top of worse mpg’s and snotty short senior napoleon riders.
The DCT is awesome fun. My son and rented two Goldwing’s to ride around south Florida and Everglades national park. One DCT and the other a 6 speed. We swapped bikes several times and I can say hands down we both preferred the DCT. Effortless blasts from the stoplight, the 6 speed was always left behind. Rested hands at stoplights on the DCT too. Way less aggravating coordination of gas, shifter, clutch , no needs for 1 million squeezes of a clutch lever for every ride, no crappy shifts, etc. Slow speed handling literally took seconds to figure out for both of us. DCT IS THE BEST.
You will always get the owners of 6speeds say it's better than the DCT & owners of DCT's say better than the manual, buy what you like . Borrowed a manual for 2 weeks & loved it, but ended up getting a DCT tour , for my long distance riding, as for slow speed stuff , i put it in rain mode to slow the throttle response down , works like a charm 😁
thanks for sharing.. I believe the DCT makes more sense for older riders who might want to focus more on enjoying the ride and scenery than the mechanics of riding.. we reach a certain age where arthritis sets in, reaction times are slower, patience is less, and we want less stress but still want to be on two wheels. That's what makes the honda goldwing a great option for more senior folks. Any younger, and they would probably still be riding a Harley! lol. I have been a Harley / Indian motorcycle rider most of my riding life but as I approach retirement, I may not want to deal with the constant shifting in stop and go traffic especially with arthritic hands. just not worth it. I am looking at the DCT for that very same reason.. otherwise I would keep my Harley.
Older riders drop DCT GOLDWINGs often at stops and during low speed maneuverability. The clutch on a 6 speed GOLDWING is butter smooth do not underestimate that detail. For us here at ODTRP we like the sense of control a manual clutch provides in turns, and the more true visceral experience of being one with the road and have more control of your fate. Getting along fine on my 06. My hard living Harley riding cousin says it's a car. "Should have just bought another car!". Well at least it's not a golf cart. I think the DCT is the answer to a question nobody asked.
Right on wise choice you will love the butter smooth shifting. We go into each gear and then softly open the throttle each time and the bike takes off in tour mode
Love my Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT, 7 speed), and I would never go back. The ability to free up a hand and a foot for every shift on long touring rides is huge. Even adding an extra gear for highway straights is worth something and the paddle shifters are always available to drop down a gear in corners. I get it though, not everyone likes new technology.
Great perspective, thank you for contributing here. Think about electric cars, not perfected and forced down our throats. Same can be said about the DCT GL1800. Believe it or not, we do not see freeing up your hand under excelleration as something very smart or safe. Experienced riders do wonderful with manuals. Ride safe, ODTRP

You can flick the DCT up and down through the gears manually with the paddles if you wish so it's almost like a clutch-less manual if you want to "play", and in terms of low-speed stability..... well...... maybe if your very new to riding or NOT used to DCT you may accidently blip the throttle accidently which can make it jerk a bit at low speed but that's something you learn not to do after a few hours. Yes Sir, you covered all the points. I own the 2021 Goldwing Tour, six speed, manual. This is the best bike I have ever owned. In all fairness, I only test rode a DTC for about thirty minutes and that is not long enough for me to say which bike is better. My six speed is beautiful in corners, shifts smooth, handles like a dream and is easy to service. I have several friends with the DCT models and they love them for reasons of their own. Great topic and it's good to get all the Goldwing community talking while enjoying their bikes.
Right on GW Moments. With record inflation and interest rates the 6 Speed is the way to go. We came across ours by accident, and it was cheaper than our Rocket 3 GT. I know changes were made post 2018, yet we love our 2018. Our great thanks to Honda Powersports for bringing back the 6 Speed Tour version, we were the only platform pro 6-Speed GW Tour. If there was another channel doing this as well we never located or found. And yes, we love and support the GW community.
Its good that you get a chose. Here in Australia Honda sales weren't that good for the 6 speed manual so Honda stopped importing them. That's what I have been told by a Honda dealership in Melbourne.
With a large engined luxury vehicle with good torque, you don't need a manual shifter. That's true for both bikes and cars. A manual Rolls Royce is pretty pointless, as would be an automatic Miata. As would be an auto Fireblade - that would be awful. But the Wing is a vast, luxury bike, built for crossing continents. I'd go full-fat Wing and get the DCT, every time ...
Riding is supposed to be fun. Shifting is part of the fun. It's an easy task for me and I have never regretted a manual on a motircycle or car. Ride what you like. All I ask is that DCTs don't become the only choice available.
What about the 2024 and all 6th Generation Goldwings having an exploding and seizing transmission. Is that only a recall on the DCT automatic transmission variant?
I gotta say, the DCT and other forms of automatic shifting are giving me a TON of entertainment. Watching y’all argue is just funny as hell. It also shows who is the gatekeepers of cycling.
Right on, we feel that dealers will negotiate more on 6 speed GW pricing than DCT wedge solid DCT pricing. Honda is very well known for producing impeccable manual transmissions.
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions Goldwing is now a little behind of the BMW , I think . With more power, speed shifter, automatically adjust the suspension, TFT touch screen. That's why I'm more leaning towards the BMW K1600 B
Ah great points I can see the BMW advantage what is your perspective on the cost of maintenance for BMWs. We have heard they get very expensive to keep on the road in later years. Is that observation correct? Thanks Carolina
I tested the DCT yesterday, didn’t like it; unstable low speed maneuvering. I also tested the K 1600 B a few weeks ago; nice bike but too much wind buffeting and the stereo was inferior. Nothing bests the manual Goldwing….the fit, finish, performance and quality is above everything else in its class.
Right On @Nervedraz we agree, and thank you for your feedback on the BMW K 1600 B (we have a BmW Dealer very close by). We also stay away from wind deflectors on our 6 Speed Goldwing, yet are not against larger windshields for some. We kept the stock windshield, it works fine. We also do not ride in fear, we do recommend Traxxion suspension products for all Goldwings. The best thing a GW owner can do is pay for the extended warranty from Honda AFTER you buy the bike, owners have three years to purchase. Great to have you and appreciate your perspective. ODTRP
I was told that 9 out of 10 Goldwings allocated to dealerships are DCT; if that’s true, your theory on getting a deeper discount on a manual might be nullified, due to the fact that you would have to order one.
@Nervedraz it’s the economy more that we feel. Honda took a bold move bringing back the 6 Speed Tour, and their allotment for dealers based on that may be higher than before. Post 2018 with our efforts and a few other respected channels (Ride Like a Pro, MC Rider) consumers are more knowledgeable now regarding the DCT. We feel strongly the take rate for manuals will be high in 2024, it’s more affordable and superior. Also major channels who get loaned a DCT all experience the clunk issues. @Hondapowersports send ODTRP a DCT.
Agree, I just purchased a 2024 white tour 6 speed manual after trading in my 2021 tour dct. I tried very hard to love the dct transmission but never felt connected like I do riding manual bikes. Slow speed handling was not very good and I did care for the clunky downshifts.
Right on, I did not mention the clunky down shifts from highway speeds, the short term solution for that is to use econ mode. Criticizing the DCT really sets off the koolaide crowd.
@OnDownTheRoadProductions been riding since the 60's...loving the improvements Honda has added since the 70's...Harley has been trying to keep up but they are pretty much the same machine. The DCT is futuristic, keep your mind on your road not your foot.. my speed is not to be ignored..you can not shift like the dual clutch can.. just ancient tech.
Apparently some trolls around here do, and what to race their claimed DCTs. Bottom line, the 6-Speed has a higher top end and that is another advantage to those who drank the DCT koolaide
Sorry but most of your points are just plain wrong. Manual is technically superior because it is cheaper? And lighter by how much? 2kg on a 365kg bike? And i don’t believe the better MPG. The only upside is low speed control, it takes time to trust the DCT at low speed, other than that, the DCT fits the new Gold like a glove, and is real fun in sport manual mode.
He's not plain wrong he's 100% right in everything he is saying. Just because you're a lazy DCT owner that should have bought an automatic minivan doesn't mean you knock his video.
I test rode a new Goldwing DCT tour at the dealership yesterday; mostly b/c the salesman encouraged me to experience what a DCT is like as I had never experienced it and criticized the idea of an automatic motorcycle. I was absolutely impressed and blown away at the performance, fit, finish & quality of this motorcycle. I’m no stranger to Honda motorcycles ….this was amazing. However, I still 100% prefer the motorcycle to be manual. The low speed maneuvering on the DCT was not enjoyable.
@@boogie1354 Youl be making a mistake you better do more research, Many failures already and horrible at low speed maneuvers people are laying them over.. Not shifting a motorcycle is the epitome of laziness go buy a minivan...
Buddy of mine has a dct...nothing but issues...latest; right before a ride he changed the oil. Day of the trip the bike would not shift out of third...felt horrible leaving him behind.
I had a 2018 DCT the best thing i liked about it was reverse i would just back up my steep driveway into my garage the worst thing when coming to a stop the bike would downshift into 1st where I was reaching for the ground I sold the bike after 6 months plus coming off of a Yamaha FJR it was very slow I have a Tesla Model 3 base that's faster than a gold wing DCT now that's embarrassing
The manual has an electric reverse and then you push a button and take off in first quicker than same DCT operation. We have a Rocket3GT faster than any DCT
Manual is the only way to go. It's the " connection " to the bike. I want to be in control period. No road race or dirt bike has an automatic. There is a reason for that.
6 speed is tried and true. Most dct owners end up purchasing the extended warranty just because of the transmission alone. So that’s another $1000-$1500 on the price.
Dct transmission is junk, and the manual transmission is 100% better and more reliable than that automatic, and a manual transmission is more fun to ride.
If people liked DCT / auto so much on bikes, every other manufacturer would have built one too.. it’s not a real motorcycle if it doesn’t have a clutch and a shifter. Period!
Just because any sports bike is enhanced by a manual shifter doesnt mean that this is true of all bikes. Speedway bikes just have one gear, and I'd like to see you rock up to a Speedway even and tell those guys that they're driving a "fake" machine. It's not either / or. Some bikes suit auto. Many don't. Same as cars. Any vehicle that is big, heavy, and has lots of torque suits an auto, as revving the hell out of it is pointless. Any vehicle that is light, sporty, revs highly, and has less torque, needs ot be revved (you drive it on the power, not on the torque) and so benefits from a manual shifter. The Wing is a big comfy barge - auto suits it.

@@ghostrider564 maybe they can still be ordered on a per case basis. Best from America ODTRP
That's what we did, and Honda brought the 6 speed tour back.
DCT for me .great bike for heavy city traffic
What about the 2024 and all 6th Generation Goldwings having an exploding and seizing transmission. Is that only a recall on the DCT automatic transmission variant?
Exploding DCTs lmao
I gotta say, the DCT and other forms of automatic shifting are giving me a TON of entertainment. Watching y’all argue is just funny as hell. It also shows who is the gatekeepers of cycling.
I agree 💯 I'm between the manual Goldwing or the BMW K1600 B. Going to buy one or the other in the fall or spring of 2025
Right on, we feel that dealers will negotiate more on 6 speed GW pricing than DCT wedge solid DCT pricing.
@@OnDownTheRoadProductions I would say Goldwing is more reliable over any Motorcycle
I had three BMW and two Wings, the wing is a superior bike, And the BMW bleed you at EVRY service, And I dont mean a little.
Your opinion brother. Just as many DCT owners love em. Some of your statements were incorrect . Ride what you like and ride your ride folks.
What statements are incorrect
Honda should add a quick shifter to the Goldwing manual; that would make it complete in my eyes…NOT the DCT…LOL.
We are planning a quick soon
I love my tour. Easier maintenance.
Would never ever get rid of my DCT this is my third one. 2018.. 22.. 24
You got rid of two DCTs
Agree, I just purchased a 2024 white tour 6 speed manual after trading in my 2021 tour dct. I tried very hard to love the dct transmission but never felt connected like I do riding manual bikes. Slow speed handling was not very good and I did care for the clunky downshifts.
Right on, I did not mention the clunky down shifts from highway speeds, the short term solution for that is to use econ mode. Criticizing the DCT really sets off the koolaide crowd.
So untrue...try to resale it versus a DCT....most comfortable ride . The DCT is the boss
Do not want to sell our Goldwing, it's amazing. Both the DCT and 6 Speed have the same ride.
You’re not the boss of me lol. Got ours for a great price, it’s paid off, we do not worry about selling it. If we do, we plan on great money
Love my DTC, never going back to manual.
@sethmccall1228 okay, let us know how your DCT recalibrations and if you experience shift clunking along with low speed maneuverability excitement
Top end...... how often do we operate at that speed? That DCT makes it an elevated experience on its own.
Top end listen 👂 skip the DCT
I test rode a new Goldwing DCT tour at the dealership yesterday; mostly b/c the salesman encouraged me to experience what a DCT is like as I had never experienced it and criticized the idea of an automatic motorcycle. I was absolutely impressed and blown away at the performance, fit, finish & quality of this motorcycle. I’m no stranger to Honda motorcycles ….this was amazing. However, I still 100% prefer the motorcycle to be manual. The low speed maneuvering on the DCT was not enjoyable.
Most Semi's are automatic now, which get better fuel mileage with less maintenance involved. My next bike will be the Dct. Your comment is spot on.
@@boogie1354 Youl be making a mistake you better do more research, Many failures already and horrible at low speed maneuvers people are laying them over.. Not shifting a motorcycle is the epitome of laziness go buy a minivan...
What about reverse? Its a heavy bike. I would.prefer a manual but I still want reverse. I am shopping used bikes.
It has electric reverse
Buddy of mine has a dct...nothing but issues...latest; right before a ride he changed the oil. Day of the trip the bike would not shift out of third...felt horrible leaving him behind.
We know, thank you for sharing. You did not mention what year for the failing DCT Goldwing. May have missed a recalibration. Best, ODTRP
Can it outrun Spiderman?
@@frogsplease4165 lol you never know, just had ours with a pack of Harley’s today in sport mode on I94
Dct bikes can’t engine break. They need to replace their break pads every 30,000km. I’ve got 50,000km on my 6 speed with original break pads
Good to know thank you
Part of the convenience
Do you know anyone that buys a Manual Car?
Yes, us and others
Nice Harley shirt.
Have owned it since 2003
Manual is the only way to go. It's the " connection " to the bike. I want to be in control period. No road race or dirt bike has an automatic. There is a reason for that.
Absolutely, AND the GOLDWING 6 Speed offers world class low speed maneuverability for less money.
And a massive 6-cylinder luxury bike tends not to be raced or go offroad, for equally compelling reasons ...
6 speed is tried and true. Most dct owners end up purchasing the extended warranty just because of the transmission alone. So that’s another $1000-$1500 on the price.
This is a great point
I'm rich, and don't care. Povs don't buy new Wings
Dct transmission is junk, and the manual transmission is 100% better and more reliable than that automatic, and a manual transmission is more fun to ride.
We agree
Junk? Really?
Automatic Goldwings are designed for women.
LOL and they struggle with it too
Aha, now we're getting to the real reason. Q: if you were less insecure about yourself, would you consider a DCT?
Can’t see myself ever riding a motorcycle without a clutch
You in Michigan what do you ride?
Finally a decent video with facts.
Automatic makes no sense to me either.
👍
Over 60% of riders choose the DCT.
Now it’s only 60 percent used to be 85 pervent
30K bike who cares if it is 1k more
It’s a lot more
Motorcycle’s should be manual in my opinion.
Agreed
Oh dear.
Oh yes
LOL are you serious?
Absolutely we drank no koolaide
No valid reasons not to go for DCT.
Right Einstein go buy one
Lighter? it's 2 pounds for crying out loud. You are splitting hairs.
No, it is 833 pounds dry weight
@OnDownTheRoadProductions the 6-speed Gold Wing tour is 833lbs wet
The 6-speed is 8 lbs lighter than the DCT...not alot of difference really, but still 8lbs lighter
If people liked DCT / auto so much on bikes, every other manufacturer would have built one too.. it’s not a real motorcycle if it doesn’t have a clutch and a shifter. Period!
Right on
Man if you can't post something intelligent, don't post. I'm sure you ride a Hardley and have no clue of what a real motorcycle is.
Sorry …. My mini bike days were over back in da 70’s ! 😂😂😂

The DCT is for motorcycle wimps. C'mon, put a trike kit on it and block the left lane.
It’s the one returning riders buy with no research and they then drink koolaide
